Allyn thanks so so .much for tom PETTY S music you share with so many it's STILL a Royal bummer your kindness helps with memories for us a n d. And MANY like myself a big fan of tom and heartbreakers rip tom your so .missed and LOVED
There's a lovely story from Tom Petty where he said that they were playing somewhere & he felt that the next line was gonna be tough to reach but then just as he went for it he heard Howie blend with his voice just right to help him along. Clearly there weren't many times that that voice was gonna struggle but Howie was there for him just in case he needed the help. Tom said that he wasn't sure that he had ever told Howie just how good he was while he was still alive.
'Echo' never got the accolades or the airplay that a lot of other TP albums got but it's one of my favorites. Room At The Top -totally defiant and I love it 'AND I AIN'T COMING DOWN'! (and I believe it). Thanks loads for posting this, I just went and grabbed ten TP CD's for my road trip tomorrow. An absolute road trip must.
The close ups are so amazing.....Mr. Petty had intense stage presence probably coming from enormous confidence that came from hard work and practice. He was a complete professional in all respects.....and his music was GREAT!
I love both of these songs. Both songs tells a interesting story and they truly rock at times you are supposed to think of the story. Tom was a master of songwriting. Love you Tom
Both songs “ Room At The Top” and Swingin” are such powerful and excellent songs.i could never pick which one I like the best. They’re both so meaty and full of interesting lyrics and very touching lyrics and the music is very touching, very nice performance and Howie’s back up vocals with Tom Petty are heartfelt. Thank you for sharing.✌️🧚🏻♂️🧚🏻♂️
The odd angle seems oddly fitting with these songs. Upbeat, downbeat, that odd truth about life. Everything is tilted in that room at the top of the world. He was such a superb poet/songwriter /singer/musician/band leader. And as another commenter noted, the camera provides intimacy, so close to Tom’s face. What would we do without these priceless uploads from Allyn? Thanks once again!
Nicely put, Naomi. I was going to try to say something similar but after reading your post, there's no point. The opening stanza of Swingin' is pure lyrical genius: "Well, she was standing by the highway in her boots and silver spurs. Gonna hitchhike to the yellow moon when a cadillac stopped for her . . ." Silver spurs, the yellow moon, and a Cadillac: Dylan is the only other song writer who could have written this.
Just seeing this particular TP video ( thought I saw them all) It is weird with the camera angels, but you’re right it oddly works. So moving even in 2022!! Thank you for having posted this!!
Two of my favorite songs 🎵 although whenever I hear him play I think wow that's my favorite song. How can one man write so many incredible songs that are so good they really are all my favorites.
Thank you Allyn! They sound so good. Mike is as always, freakin AMAZING on that guitar ! Two of my favorite songs. Heck who am I kidding. I love them all. I will play this one time and time again. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
kim jacquay , Kim , I can only agree with what you say , Mike Campbell is one of the best guitar players in the world, a genius infact, these two songs are absolutely fantastic, great to see Howie backing Tom up , very good video
Absolutely love these guys and so sorry that Tom is gone. Hopefully he's happy where he is now. Does anyone know what's going to happen to the Heartbreakers? I think Mike Campbell is one of the best guitar players in the world, and the rest of the band is totally fantastic. I hope they go on and make more music because they're all so good. Thanks so much for the videos I love them so much.
It's a shame these were the only songs Tom ever performed from Echo, but I understand why. They were written and recorded during an incredibly painful period of his life between his divorce and Howie's heroin addiction. Even though the album yielded only a handful of modest rock hits, Echo is arguably the best album the Heartbreakers ever recorded.
The piano harmonies together with the backing vocals... Damn... Can't get any better. Oh wait, there's a Mike Campbell's chrystaline solo afterwards. This is musical history, I can't even believe I can watch this over and over for free at home.
Thank you so much, Allyn, for posting this. As are all of your videos, this too is beautifully done. I wonder if this is from the 1999 Fillmore shows? Room At The Top when he sings *that* verse ("I love you, please love me, I'm not so bad. And I love you so.") still brings tears to my eyes. Also, the line in Swingin' ("I wish Mom could see me now. She'd be so proud of me..") makes me think he might mean that both personally as well as for the character in the song. Well, now Tom, his mother, and the beautiful, harmonic Howie are all together, hopefully proud and still singing in harmony.
Its 2022 and never have seen this one ( thank you for posting) so well said - BOTH those lines you mentioned in each sone -when he sings them I get teary 🥲
Yes I have seen this although I’m confused about the camera angle. Quite serious, cheering up a bit for Swinging but missing out some of the spontaneity. Mike looking positively pissed. Wonder what was going down? Nice to see and hear so clearly although maybe it makes it harder to understand he and Howie are gone when here they are alive on the screen. Thank you xx
I think his last verse on at room top of the world is for his kids. Little one your so far away and I’m not so bad. Cause he was going through his divorce.
@Blue Bear Possibly.... but I thought it was meant for Dana because they were already together and were married in 2001. Think this was right before they got engaged. She had been with him through his detox and his divorse....and helped him to rectify his relationship with his kids. We'll never really know. But both great songs. He was something else !!! You're at the top of the world tonight, Tom. Rest in peace.
Question for those who may know... the Doc. Makes it seem like this song was about Howie and watching this rendition crushes me cause they were so good together?! Anyone know the real deal?
Nathan Vaughan live BBC. Later with Jools Holland which he why he says thank you Jools. ua-cam.com/video/0XVaSY-PTQo/v-deo.html without the weird angles.

I often wonder about the moments Tom and Howie spent together after shows .
ECHO is such an underrated album.. one of my favorites👍

Scott Thurston was such a huge addition....the man can do everything, and damn good at it all...really compliments Tom and the guys
Agree completely about Thurston.
Such a vital part of the band!
Scott (Duckhead) Thurston is underrated. If you are lucky enough to have his musical genius in your band, then you are lucky enough!
One of the best backup musicians!
Tom loved America and sang about it gracefully he was one of a kind
Love this stuff! Every part...chord...note...all is the best ever!!!!!---- There isn't one song I don't love!!!! Love every one!!!! Just like Tom...

If Howie would of only realized how important and impressive a vocal artist he was... another troubled soul lost😔
Wow didn't see this version before, they sound so much just like the record ! Amazing !
Howie at 2:12 - I mean . . . that is one vocal that only the Howster can pull off!!! Well done Howie!!
truly. truly. and then...he looks like he's beginning his final descent.
That high harmony, man! RIP Howie & Tom.
Such a terrible loss!
Yes

Miss you Tom. Every simple note meant something to you. Love it.

It is for me. Perfect album, from start to finish. Burnt the cd.

This is one of my favorite songs! Thanks! I got to see them in concert where they played songs from “Echo”.
Loved everything! So sad he’s gone😢👑
This Song tears at my soul. Brilliant!
Thank you for posting this. Love his eye contact with the camera - it’s not always this direct.
RIP Tom & Howie! Love them both x
Howie, looks like the coolest guy on the planet.
He was beginning to start to fade here sadly
Coolest because he looks half dead while playing?
The best. There will be no other
Really nice. Good to see Tom's Torucaster. He played that a lot for many years. He brought it out on their last tour.
Thank you very much!❤️thank you for all the beautiful video of Tom!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Mike sometimes looks that way and i don't think he means to. His mouth naturally turns downward.
I really miss Tom, Howie too.
