Love your vids...How did you do this though w/ all the copyright issues YT always has? Did you get special permission from the Petty estate? How did this work out? Curious b/c I too am in the midst of starting a music channel but need more info on how to do it the right way...?
As a 40 plus year fan, Tom solo is the best thing. There’s a lot to like here. What got him noticed early on is the quality of his writing. In this setting, stripped down, the songs, for one thing, are masterpieces.
The same reaction- TP unplugged, his songs stand on their own without the band embellishment, although they were best in business- and what a huge heart, giving his all here for a Bridge School benefit.
So, so true. I’m a 40 plus fan as well. Good God, I miss him. He and the Heartbreakers combined the best of rock ‘n’ roll from many eras into one beautiful symphony of sound. In Tom’s songs I hear the Beatles , Lennon, ❤️🙏🥰, Elvis, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Johnny Cash and Chuck Berry as well as countless rhythm and blues artists who never received the recognition they deserved. Their music filtered through Tom and created something truly unique-an American masterpiece, never to be seen again. I thank God I was alive to witness it, and as Tom said, I can only thank God I was not too late. Now, I pass the love and the wisdom of it to my children. God bless you, Tom Petty. Thank you for the role you have played in my life and the lives of so many others, and so many more yet to come. Through your songs, you will live forever. May the love of all your family the world over sustain you and keep you forever, as it has for all of us.
I have always been a lyrics- driven person. Something can be garbage around you as far as the music. But if the lyrics rip your guts out or lift you up higher than you ever thought you could imagine in the quality, it's all good. Rest in peace Tom
What got him noticed was Damn The Torpeados, and the time in Rock n Roll that it was released. I bought it when it came out at all of 11 years old, and though young I remember that time clearly, with the mix of disco, a lot of bloated boring rock, etc, and bands like TP, the Pretenders, The Cars, and The Police, with their 1st 2 albums in 78' and 79' shook up the industry, where there was a market for music that was kind of between hard rock, punk, and disco. I got so into Pettys Torpeados album (even that young) that I couldn't wait to get Hard Promises when it came out, but I didn't like that one anywhere near as much. Also bought the 45 of The Waiting, and on the B side was Night Watchmen, a song that even pretty heavy PT fans probably wouldn't know or remember. Petty was amazing though, like a Jackson Browne on steroids!
He is up there with Neil Young Dylan and even Hank Williams. The most purist form of art is a songwriter with an honest voice and guitar. Not many have this kinda of charisma, but Tom Petty does, along with the others previously mentioned...
Not bad for someone who broke their hand 18 months earlier and was told they’d never play guitar again. I’m so glad Tom didn’t give up then. He just got better and better!
This was WELL before the “acoustic sunrise” sets artists ended up doing- Tom Petty here in this -set the bar! Superb writing, singing, and related to his audience up to the week before he passed. As his daughter has said about him - he was MAGICAL!!! Also how awesome was he just singing and strumming his heart out all alone ( Benmont for a second)for such a great cause!!!Thank youuuu for posting this - watching in 2022!!!
The audience seemed to immediately love him. He had such a good rapport with them. He made them feel included as soon as he walked out, put his hands to his eyes, and peered out toward them.
So talented, God I love his voice. No one sounds quite like Tom , now he's rocking heaven with his friends. RIP Tom and thanks for all the great musical gifts 🎁 you. left for us. 💘
I was BLESSED to be there. Robin Williams and Bill Graham as the emcee's. Awesome. First time back together for CSN&Y. Awesome. All for a great cause. Thank you Neil and Peggy. Great times.
As a true musician his voice as a performer was chameleon-like. This was a Dylan period so I hear Dylan inflections; in the mid to late '80s he was still a babe magnet; (at one time subscribed to a Facebook group focussed on the Heartbreakers but opted out because of the plethora of photos of him when he was young which did not do justice to his whole career) -- there was a Byrds period; there was the acoustic 4 octave range of Wildflowers; there was the raunchy voice of 1st three albums plus last one, Hypnotic Eye and yes he was quite capable of barking like a dog on stage. His voice was a musical instrument. He loved those high harmonies; hence Ron Blair then Howie than Ron Blair again. As he aged he himself couldn't hit those high notes but worked around those limitations brilliantly. What struck me was that this is the first live benefit he performed solo … and it worked!!! Used to Springsteen and Sting doing that but whatever he said about the Heartbreakers when they hurt him, they were a substitute family in a way that isn't true for more ego-driven artists.
Everything Evelyn said. It was that stage presence of charisma and confidence, that made him and his band so popular in Gainesville. In Conversations With Tom Petty, he told Paul Zollo that the band was heating up as a live act, in Hollywood clubs, before the first album release. He heard that other bands were imitating them, on stage!
So this is Tom flying solo Brilliant !! I wonder if The Heartbreakers will ever play without Tom ? I'm sure they could with Scott stepping up to Lead Vocals !
86 was a phenomenal year for the Bridge School at shoreline the line up was fantastic I wish I could go back in time and watch that live wow what a moment in time that was
Thank you so much for these videos! I know I’m not the only one still hurting from his death. You posting these performances I’ve never seen, it’s like he’s still here for a few minutes.
Brittany I truly hear you. He was my friend; shouldn't be posting this info but wtf. Grief takes its own time; one day you'll wake up and when listening to his music that element of loss and sadness won't be there. You'll just rejoice for having heard this ineffably great music. Someone strung the worlds charisma, confidence and sexy -- well in 1986 or 1988 yes he was a babe magnet, but I'd like to put that aside for a moment and focus on charisma elusive word to define, you have it or your don't; confidence; the most hard-won of all his qualities as a definite introvert. Best wishes and so glad his last years with Dana plus grandchild!! were happy ones.
For me, the sadness and tragedy will probably always remain part of my experience of him and the great memories I have of the songs and performances and that’s ok. I don’t know for sure, of course, but something tells me he wouldn’t have it any other way. Thanks for this great stuff!
Love this so much. Was saying to a friend how wonderful these Bridge benefits videos are and then your notification popped up. What a truly great musician and brave man TP is. Somehow these clips get to parts others don’t reach. Xxx
Thank you so very much, these SONGS ARE fantastic, keep then coming. Some ot these songs ARE VERY,VERY, AWESOME.I MISS THAT GENIUS SONG WRITER,EVERY DAY,But AGAIN THANK YOUTAKE CARE AND STAY WELL AND SAFE, WALTER B.MEMPHIS. THE ROLLING 😛☠
Sirius’ Tom Petty channel plays this and I heard that it was from the Bridge School Benefit. I was so stoked to see you posted the whole thing. I had wanted so much to actually see him playing this. Thanks for making my wish realized.
Allyn Kessler you are a gem!!!!! I don't think of Tom performing without the Heartbreakers; this was in the wake of the Dylan tour, so he sounds Dylanish, brilliantly. I watched a recent interview with Mike Campbell and when asked what was his favorite Heartbreakers song he paused, minimalliy and it was this song; SOOO early in their career it stand the test of time. Many tx once again!!! I'm used to Sting and Springsteen doing solo performances; this was brilliant.
Dang it Allyn I don’t know where you find these but this concert video is sooooo truly AWESOME!!! Thank you so much for the post it’s truly wonderful and so very special ❤️❤️🎸🎶🎩 💜 It’s totally fantastic!!!!
Beautiful Les Paul you got there sir...I got myself a 60 gold top, my uncle gave it to me before he passed...I cherish it...have a couple strats, a handful of Ibanez’s, a awesome Tele, but nothing sounds as good as the Les Paul...the Telecaster comes close, but nothing can create that warm syrupy tone like the Gibson
Your efforts (Allyn) will always be appreciated by those who love Tom Petty. I upload his songs and try to create decent album playlists for people to enjoy, but any fool can do that. You always bring us the special things ~ those we might never see and hear otherwise. Here's the man with just an acoustic guitar in 1986! Thanks yet again!
Fantastic solo version, perhaps best of Shadow of a Doubt. Guitar players… the guitar on this version sounds so much like an 12 string, yet clearly is a 6 in the video. Comments on the tuning ?
@@andyhendershotrealestate Tom played Shadow of a Doubt in a sort of Open A tuning: EAEAC#E (so regular Open G tuning but up a whole step; not the easiest on strings or neck, but sounds great). A very rare alternate tuning in the TPHB discography, other than 2/3 Drop-D songs.

I was there. 18 years old and so high I can barely remember any of it. All I remember is I had a great time.
I was there as well
I was there, too 🎉😮
Tom and his guitar 🎸 and all was right in the 🌎 world !

5:13 is incredible
I wake up some mornings and remember again that he’s gone. And it makes me so sad.
Tom came a long way baby, and I'm so glad he brought us with him.
Fabulous 23 minutes of pure Tom Petty. Thank God the music is here forever. God Bless you Tom.

Superlative artist ❤😊
Bridge shows were always acoustic. Until Eddie Van Halen I think.
The audience seemed to immediately love him. He had such a good rapport with them. He made them feel included as soon as he walked out, put his hands to his eyes, and peered out toward them.
“It’ll All Work Out” was absolutely soul crushing...damn it Tom...it’s 4am...not supposed to have tears in my eyes right now dude
I'd be more worried about you if you didn't have tears in your eyes. It's all good. Even when it sucks like crap. It's all good.
It is such a beautiful song. 🔥💔
Best version of Shadow of a Doubt. “She’s a complex kid,” I love that line 😎
.....The guitar sounded fantastic on that song... Forgot about that song, but I liked it. Never listened to the words and what they mean...
Loved it !! Great show. That's what it's about keeping his music alive🥳🎸🎸
Awesome song one of the best he wrote definitely top 5 in my opinion 👍
Such a clever line. 🤩🔥💔
