And he went down ,,, swinging. I wish for him that he is recognized for his genius. "I just want to be in the conversation" he said. He did so much more than that.
@@woofiedog7452 So true. He never craved the celebrity lifestyle, kept his tickets low and effortlessly cool. Tough but fair. If you have seen the 4 hour documentary he shows how tough he was when two young music business execs wanted Roger Mcguinn to record a song that Tom thought was shit and Roger agreed. Tom was so angry.
This was recorded in April 1999 when TP & The Heartbreakers did a short European tour in support of 'Echo'. And by short i mean short, as I remember they did 2 nights at London's Shepherds Bush Empire (about 1200 capacity), one show in Paris and one in Hamburg. The Hamburg show was recorded for Rockpalast and is available in full out there somewhere. It was their first shows in Europe since 1991, and they wouldn't return again for a full tour until 2012. I was very very fortunate to attend the first show at Shepherds Bush and stood 6 feet in front of Tom. Magical night. I suspect this was recorded earlier that day or the following day. Still can't believe he's no longer with us (and Howie of course), both greatly missed.
Saw/heard this back in 99 , my favourite Petty song since then (though there are so many beautiful ones) , Mr Petty : you will be dearly missed and not forgotten...................
I think it's pretty obvious this was not the happiest period in his life. Someone posted that Tom Petty shared the soundtrack of HIS life, and I believe this is a good example. I am just so sad at his passing.
Great, original, charismatic musician Tom Petty ... It is a pity that he is not there .. There are no more such people and will never be ... Greetings from Russia ✌️
I met Tom's work thru this exact show. Then I bought Echo and the rest is history. Jools also presented in this episode two other bands that I listen till today: Catatonia, Kula Shaker and Paul Westerburg. So I guess Tom's right: "Thank u Jools...". And this WAS NOT recorded in 2009, but in 1999 - the year they released Echo. RIP
It was tough time for Tom, he divorced and became addicted to heroin. Thankfully he overcame those obstackles and passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He was such a great musician and beloved humankind. I'll miss him.
This is 1999, as the album Echo was released in 1999, because Howie Epstein passed away in 2003. Also by this stage the band being a US/UK lineup with Steve Ferrone now in the band.
@@aldobenincasa1761 true but it was short lived. And, I recall reading somewhere, it was the punk rockers that liked him due to the fact he wore a biker's leather jacket on his first album cover

As far as I'm concerned, he IS the conversation.
Great Reply Lorraine!
That lyric "I love you, please love me, I'm not so bad." Is so sad. How could anyone not love Tom Petty?
He was very easy to like, probably easier to love, impossible to fall out of love with....
He ´d have to do something
about that dreadful ‘hairdo ..
nice song though
@@johnlawrence2757 Leave his hair alone. At least he had some.

Mick, yes it was short tour, but we did not go to France. Tour security, Ortiz

Thank you so much for sharing this again :) He will be missed....
I have so many great memories with friends tied to his music. Thanks, Tom.
He was the coolest guy on earth. Miss you so much Tom.

Howie’s harmony on “look deep in the eyes of love...” unbelievable.
It adds so much emotional weight to that line. He was such an asset to the band and his story is a tragedy in its own right. RIP Howie and Tom.

Swingin' is one of my favorites. Thanks for so much joy, sir.

I listen every day to this ❤️
Beautiful song from Tom RIP

I’d have loved to be in that audience. Do they realise how lucky they are? 🧐🎸🎼💕💔

This is as good as it gets ❤️🎩❤️ for me~~~~~~~~
Thank you mr 🎩
He's laughing when singing "Swingin". I think it's because he mentions Glenn Miller twice so has to drop Sammy Davis.😁😁 Brilliant performances.
I took him for granted when I saw him in concert. I was so excited and got too drunk and I don't remember much at all. We will miss you Tom.
Where did you see him in concert ?
R.I.P.
I ain’t coming down 🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️

FANTASTIC 💘💖
It is a lesser world with Tom Petty.
RIP Tom Petty QAQ
i am surprised jools holland got TP on his show ...TP&THB were criminally underrated in the UK
but UK was the first country to take a look at him, even before the states

So true we didn’t hear enough of Tom by a long long way. So sad, what we missed. 💔
Tom Petty was seriously underrated.
Even in America where he was a Hero.
lord heart breaking
I am still not over his passing yet , six months later, it’s still so hard to take , the man was a musical genius.
i love "echo". wish he'd have played song off of it more often

Howie was the best harmony singer Tom ever had in the band.
You've now got that room Tom. R.i.p.
