Other way around. He has to face that he's dealing with numbers and not people. Pete has to learn that Billy, the players, and himself are all part of a business where statistics determine individual's value, not their uniqueness or charm. Instead of empathizing with the players, Pete needs to be blunt and direct with them rather than try to cushion the blow. This scene both touches on the nuance of Pete's character- that rather than just being a number-crunching assistant to the GM, he possesses human kindness, and also shows Billy Beane's commitment to the A's new quantitative approach- despite being a former player himself who had a short and painful career, Billy is driven to win and has fully embraced Pete's data-driven strategy.
@@hedon5028 They're both right. Pete didn't think he was going to have to work with people, but when he did, turns out the best way to work with people was to act if he's working with numbers.
What Peter doesn’t realize is that Billy thinks so highly of him, he’s willing to begin the process of training him to be a GM. Peter doesn’t realize it because Billy thinks higher of Peter than Peter does of himself.
I showed this video to my eldest who was struggling to tell someone some bad news in a professional setting. Don't mess around. Get to the point. Keep emotion out of it and things will go so much better for both parties.
This is such a great fucking movie. With every film, Aaron Sorkin just gets better and better. And it was acted so perfectly. And see how a movie that's pretty much all dialogue and no action can be more compelling and beloved than an explosive, vfx laden blockbuster? Just goes to show how far a well acted, well written conversation goes.
Lol, the rambling of "You shouldn't pull them out in the middle of the school year, you should wait..." "What the hell are you talking about?" I love Sorkin's dialogue.
0:19. "I would never have to cut a player. Unless you ..." Ahem. Got fired. It was very significant when Pete later agreed to break the news to Pena. It was a fairly open acknowledgement that Billy could be gone any minute. I missed that the first 100 times or so.
turnovers should absolutely be avoided at all costs but sometimes you have to fire people. there's a balance and when all the turnovers come from people quitting or leaving on their own accord it's probably bc some managers dont know or understand of how to fire people properly and why.
As much as I love everything about this movie, I'm just now seeing a flaw in Billy's logic here. He doesn't want to travel with the team to avoid any attachment so it's easier to let them go. That's fair enough, so he sends Pete on the road in his place. But in traveling with the team, Pete would naturally become attached to the players as Billy himself said it would happen to him too. Problem is, here we have Billy telling him he should learn how to cut them when that's the entire situation Billy didn't want to be in himself yet he puts Pete there.
I don't think it's a flaw in Billy's logic so much as a necessary growing pain for Pete to go through. Billy is trying to coach Pete and give him more experience to move up in the organization and maybe even one day replace him. Pete is a great numbers guy but he's socially awkward and struggles when interacting with people. I think both instances are Billy forcing Pete out of his comfort zone and making him interact with the players so that he can see them as people and not just numbers on a screen. It sucks that Pete has to eventually cut players that he's grown attached to but it's also important that he personally goes through that experience so he better understands how to maintain a professional relationship with the players he's managing.

I know this was just practice and not even a real scene, but any player who buys a house that doesn't have a long term contract is just stupid. If you have a 5 year or longer contract, with a no trade clause, it's worth it to buy a house. If you only have a couple years, and can be traded, you get an apartment. Risking buying a house in the latter scenario is just foolish.
I wouldn't call it that risky in all honesty unless it's a buyer's market for housing since if it's a seller's market you can just list the home you bought and have it sold pretty fast most likely due to supply being outweighed by demand.
Scrolled through the comments and didn't see anyone highlighting the best part of this scene where Pete isn't quite sure for a second if he just got fired or not
I think the realization that dawns on Pete is, "I will only be doing this if Billy is not here." Which makes it ultra-significant when Pete breaks the news to Pena - they are more or less acknowledging openly that Billy could be fired at any moment.
