I find that trout key into the backswimmers when they dive into the water to lay their eggs. A favourite of mine is a beadhead backswimmer, imitates the little blip the naturals make when they hit the water. Often fish will strike as soon as the fly hits.

thanks Phil, again another great video, I'm going to give these a try. Are boatmen just fall patterns?

Boatman can be used successfully in early season right after ice-off or in the fall as seen here.

At what point in the fall do the rainbows begin to key in on boatmen or backswimmers? Is there a particular surface temp you are looking for? And how late into the fall will this kind of fishing be productive? Does it work any other time of year?

How would i go about fishing boatmen on the upper Bow river (Canmore)? Under a bobber? And if i strip hold the rod high to make it rise, jigging it almost? Try to avoid stripping horizontal?

could you explain how the leader is tied from fly line to the fly? Do you use a prepackaged tapered leader or how does it work? I'm totally lost when it comes to still water rigging.

Yes, tapered leaders are often used to connect fly line to a fly. If you google this question, there is lots of good info on how this is done and for what reasons/circumstances. Also, if possible go to a fly shop or Bass Pro or Cabelas to get more hands-on info. Good luck learning!

my floating live does not have a loop so i needed to tie a nail know between floating line and tapered leader.

Awsome video again.. I learned so much from you guys. Thank you. Q- is it possible to scale a trout with traditional scale without harming or killing the fish.?

if you keep it in the net you can. just subtract weight of net and you have measurement of weight of fish

    You need a striping apron
