Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we revisit that near-mythical beast of tone, the Klon Centaur Professional Overdrive. Beloved of many professional players and enthusiasts alike, there is no doubt that it is a unique design and inspired a whole generation of overdrive pedals, particularly after official production was ceased in the early/mid 2000s.
As 2017 draws to a close (when we filmed this video) it’s clear that you can achieve something all-but identical to the Centaur’s tone and feel via any number of clones, remakes and inspired-by pedals. We’ve made a video or two about that in the past. However…
This video is not primarily about which of these pedals sounds most like the Centaur. It’s about what comes next: what tweaks and features address some of the common criticisms levelled at the Centaur, while still maintaining that unmistakeable tone and feel. Thus we have a smattering of recent offerings, notably the Wampler Tumnus Deluxe released very recently. The small-box Tumnus has been phenomenally popular for Brian Wampler’s company, so they’ve added features and evolved it into a Deluxe model. And of course, there are a handful of others to consider too.
Let’s get all post-Klon then shall we? Enjoy the video…

What's very interesting to watch in the Tumnus/Tumnus Deluxe section is how Mick and Dan move the EQs on the Deluxe. According to Brian Wampler's video on the Tumnus Deluxe, if you want the Deluxe like the original Tumnus, put the bass and mids at 12 because they are active EQs and match the treble control because it's the same. And Dan ends up doing almost exactly that when A/B-ing the Deluxe and the original. As for comparing the Deluxe to the Klon, according to Wampler's manual online, to get the "Klon tone" you should roll off the bass to about 10 and put the mids and treble at around 1:30. Mick ends up doing almost exactly that. It's mind-blowing to see Dan and Mick do these exact things because they hear it (instead of scouring the internet for tone tips like me).

I've been playing for many years, and pedals are a way to expand the palett of sounds you can get from your guitar. I know this is an old post, but as a parent are you looking for info on pedals for beginner or intermediate players? I'd be happy to give my suggestions. Many of the pedals feature on this show are quite pricey and for experienced or professional players.
Dan & Mick I LOVE your show! I think the basic essentials would make a great show!

I got the Tumnus Deluxe a couple of weeks ago and watched this again. It’s great to hear you guys fiddling with the controls, different guitars and different styles. The Klon sound is cool through a clean Blackface amp, but I managed to find settings for a Tube Screamer in there too with a Tweed Princeton. Very versatile! at 31:50,,you dialed in the "Crossroads" point where I could not tell them apart. Tumnus mini , and deluxe that is. I have the mini, and love it. Not sure if i need to upgrade to the Deluxe now. Thanks guys, you just may have saved me some coin, and the wife thanks you very much for it. ;)

When you guys were talking about the Oxblood and then talked about dialing in a sound on high vs. low gain it reminded me of a feature I wish more pedals had. Why don't they have a rough gain and a fine gain. The fine gain would change the sound less than a 1/8 of a turn on the rough gain so that you could more easily reach that sweet spot. Instead of trying to turn the one gain knob on so many pedals that ridiculously small turn between great and standard you would just get it close then tweak another full knob that changes the gain that 1-5%. Great video as always!!!!

Great show once again fellas! Beautiful sounds from every pedal and guitar used!!
The Tumnus Deluxe seems to sound a bit more open than the OG. I wonder if it’s the new circuit or bigger components making that happen?
    Sick As sounds Sick AF.
Note: I’m glad you decided to print on the front of your shirt Mick or you’d never find it in the washing pile..

Maybe someone has already commented on this, but the thing that sets the Klon apart, at least when it was originally designed, is that it splits the signal into a clean and a distorted path. The clean signal and the distorted signal are then mixed by the dual gang Gain control. This means that with the Gain control fully anti-clockwise you only hear the clean signal from the clean path, the Klon then functions as a clean boost. With the Gain control at the middle of its rotation you hear an equal mix of the signals from the clean and the distorted paths. I wonder if in the Manticore, and perhaps some of the other pedals, this dual gang mix control is simply split into two controls.
To be accurate - the Klon actually has several signal paths - for example another path always feeds some of the clean signal through to the output. And to make it even more complicated various EQs are applied to the different signal paths. With the Gain in the middle and the Treble at max the Klon produces a pronounced mid hump - relative to 1KHz it's minus 12dB at 100Hz and minus 18dB at 10KHz.

Yes absolutely. We may have touched on that in that last video and I’ve certainly written about it a few tones (Mick here). It’s one of the reasons I get annoyed when I hear people say it’s just a reworked TS-808! In any case, thanks for the info and description. Interesting question about the Manticore. Just opened mine (Mick here) and they are on separate pots. Scotty definitely moved things on with the Manticore and I’m sure it goes beyond simply splitting that dual gang into two pots. Blooming interesting question and observation - thank you!

Yes, and the original Tumnus kept the low end intact.i even hear some added bottom end.So, as a boost it doesnt quite work. You'd have to adjust your amp's bass control..unlike the Klon

Ha! It’s a weird thing. They can get quite compressy in a gain way. (The ODS anyway). But the barking mad power section/EV speaker always makes it very prominent. A unique sound.

This was a really cool episode. I like the idea of finding a pedal which does the "same thing" without necessarily being a clone of the original .
I'd love to see you guys do an episode where you look at pedals to be used as a boost into an already heavily overdriven amp OTHER than a TS808 on full level
o gain. Sometimes the nasal honk of an 808 is nasty as hell when thrown in front of a screaming amp (especially if it's a Marshall) so it'd be great to see what other pedals can do the same trick.

Been a while since we had any updates on Klones.....watched all the old vids when I was looking....tried Tumnus (before Deluxe version), Oxblood, RRYA and settled on the Tumnus that has been on my board for around 4 years now. Just recently got made aware of Rimrock Effects Mythical Overdrive....lots of positive feedback on forums comparing to originals. KTR, Tumnus, RRYA so pulled the trigger and bought one of the Vintage Spec with additional switchable Telefunken 126 germanium diode. Absolutely stunning sound (but can still be set up todo that bass heavy thing that the Tumnus does if that is your thing ). LIked it so much that I went out and bought a second with the switchableTelefunken 128 silicon diode option - great for added headroom and, to my ears, a bit more sparkle). Tumnius now retired to the pedal cupboard. Time for TPS to update this vid?? Ken at Rimrock makes a great pedal and the price is very, very reasonabe. How about it, guys?

Mick and Dan ... you guys are killing me, lol ... remind me never to buy pedals on a Thursday ... just picked up a used Tumnus, after weeks of struggling whether I really needed the extra tone controls, and spend half again as much on the Deluxe piece of kit ... now on Friday I'm second guessing myself, again ... which is why I love your show. A quick comment on the Wampler overdrive/distortion pedals ... on their website, the technical details tab shows a great spider chart of various characteristics of the pedal; a great way to compare their different products. It'd be great if all the pedal manufacturers did this. Cheers!

Thanks for another great show, loving it, as always.
Question & Suggestion - Presumably when using drive pedals in a loop switcher (GigRig etc), the volume knob of each pedal is adjusted along with gain to create a unity dB level? So, pedal on or off, roughly the same volume?
I'd like to suggest that we use some of the pedals' headroom and use the volume of each drive to shape the front end of the amp. Maybe take, the big 3 amps, Fender, Vox & Marshall or types of and use a tube screamer type, treble boost/fuzz and maybe even pedals like Echopark's Dual Harmonic/Soapbox, that doesn't have a volume control?

With the release of the EHX op amp big muff, could you do an episode looking at the characteristics of gain derived by different types of components? eg. op amps, germanium transistors, silicon transistors, leds, and any other. I would like to here some of the cork sniffing tasting notes on each of these components in drive or fuzz pedals. love you stuff guys.

You have great timing. I just bought a Tumnus Deluxe, but have been a little disappointed with it. I have yet to find a tone that outshines my other overdrive pedals (including my much loved D&M Drive) and have been trying to decide whether or not to keep it. You guys were able get some great tones from the Tumnus Deluxe. I am anxious to match your settings and see if that makes my decision easier.
Thank you so much for another great show!

The Matthews Effects Architect came before the Tumnus deluxe, it's got a 3 band eq too, but, with different clipping options. Has a diode lift, silicon and germanium modes. That would be worth having a look at for another klon style pedal with more versatility!

Being fairly new to gear, I have never seen nor head a real Klon Centaur that I recognized. Dan's comments about the Tumnus in this video really resonated with me, so I bought one. This was my third OD and 8th pedal overall. Ands I have to say this was exactly the tone I was looking for. Pairing it with the Keeley 30 MS, I feel like Josh Smith when he discovered the Tchula.
