  • Downwind Foiling is hard AF. I only wish I had a video like this when I started and therefore I put this together for you with the help of the "A-Team". This tutorial provides the basics of down winding and can be paused throughout to get a better understanding of the discipline. Even if you're already a proficient down winder or don't downwind here at the Kaikoo's run, there are probably things in here that can help you, or at minimum, make you laugh. Enjoy.

    This is the most informational video I have found so far on downwinding, thank you so much. Today I tried my first down wind and I could never properly connect the bumps but I’m super excited now to try again tomorrow with all this new info. Great video keep it up

      Hope the vid provided you some head starts once you were out there. Every run, just get a little further and or some solid knowledge takeaways. Remember, chase the back of bumps, not the bumps themselves.

    This answered so many questions and kept me entertained. What’s the Recomended mast length to pair w a HA? Anyone doing that on the 120HA?

    • @chrispewkreme
      @chrispewkreme Рік тому

      I've got a 27.5" Armstrong mast and I would imagine that's the shortest you'd ideally want. Especially when that open ocean swell gets upwards of like 4-6'. Seems like something even taller would be best.

  • @martinjurica3460

    Love the commentary , if you have time to give us the aspect ratio of wing and setup or a cheaper one that you recommend would be great, I Live on an Island off Brisbane Australia and just starting my foiling adventures, definitely hooked

    • @KahiPacarro
      @KahiPacarro  3 роки тому +2

      In this video I'm riding a mid to high aspect ratio foil. It's the Takuma Kujira 1210. I would recommend the Takuma lineup, Lift, Moses, and Unifoil.

      @Mickfoil1 Рік тому

      @@KahiPacarro why do u not recommend the Armstrong ha ?

    • @KahiPacarro
      @KahiPacarro  Рік тому

      @@Mickfoil1 when this comment was made, Armstrong did not have a decent HA wing. Currently they still don’t have one that seems to work well for our conditions in Hawaii. In the beginning they seemed to not be interested in HA. I believe this has changed and soon Armstrong will have some solid HA designs that work very well for downwinding.

    • @Mickfoil1

      @@KahiPacarro thanks for the reply. Ok was the 1125 not good enough ? So there is no one using Armstrong HA 1325/1125/925 in hawaii? What is it with them that they don't work in Hawaii?

    • @KahiPacarro
      @KahiPacarro  3 роки тому +4

      It means, if you can't already ride 4 waves in a row without falling (catch a wave, pump back out, catch another x4) then you're probably not ready. Hope that makes sense.

    Thank you for this! It is the most informative video I have seen about prone DW foiling. How many times have you had to paddle in from half mile or more past the reef? Would be super nervous falling then having to paddle back in from the deep blues. What about a run from China Walls? I see guys jumping in and paddling straight out towards the horizon prone. How are they getting up?

    • @KahiPacarro
      @KahiPacarro  6 місяців тому +1

      The paddle in on the Kaikoo's run is minor. But the paddle in on the Hawaii Kai run is gnarly. I've done that paddle in after falling, 3 times and SUP'd across it without getting up at least 7 times. One time I had to paddle in a foildrive in from almost two miles out. Not fun. 99% of peeps hopping off china walls are SUP'g and can get back up if they fall by using the paddle.

    Hey what do you weigh? Is the 1210 overkill for 5’7” 155?

    • @KahiPacarro
      @KahiPacarro  3 роки тому +4

      Aloha Fletch. I'm around 170. The 1210 is epic and makes mediocre days great but when it's nuking the 980 is the way to go. Good to have both in your quiver. Mahalo for what you do to support my friends.

  • @Steven-rw8zr
    @Steven-rw8zr 3 роки тому

    I'm still having trouble with pumping, I don't know how you can do it with such ease. I'm wondering if I should move my mast to the center (its currently 100% forward) so that I can get my foot in front of it a bit easier without being to far forward on the board?
    Where do you generally like your mast when foiling? Is it different depending on what you are doing? I'm currently riding the 1150 Axis so pumping should be easy, but I am baaaad haha.
    Riding small waves is super fun and easy, but pumping, man oh man, its hard to figure out.

    • @chrispewkreme
      @chrispewkreme Рік тому +2

      obviously it's different for every wing, but the mid aspects, I tend to have my rear foot on the mast or even behind it to pivot fast and carve. It also helps to be able to push on the back foot to get the nose to come up. Your legs will pump almost simultaneously, but the front one pushing down first followed by the rear, then the front foot coming up right as you've hit the bottom of the pump with your back foot.
      High aspect is similar, but I tend to use a narrower stance. Keep the board more level. Keep the wing high on the water, give it small quick taps, and get your weight thrown forward out on front and let the foil kinda catch up to you.
      Have fun!

    • @KahiPacarro

      They don't provide enough glide when pumping. You need at least a mid aspect wing. I use the Takuma Kujira 980 or 1210
