    UA-cam tends to recommend tutorials out of order. To watch wing foil tutorials in order you can use this playlist:

    I’m a middle aged surfer in Maui with 4 wing foiling sessions under my belt so far. I grew up here and can’t stand the crowded surf lineups any more. Needless to say people around here are killing it out in the water winging like crazy. There is NEVER a lack of wind and always side on shore. I’ve been consuming all the UA-cam content I can find and this channel is by far, without a doubt, the absolutely most thorough and understandable material available. I can’t imagine you doing a better job. Seriously, hats off to you and thank you so much !!!

    This is an unbelievable tutorial. I'm 4 sessions in, and starting to come up on foil. The clarity this video provides in terms of getting the timing right is like no other video has ever explained - I now deeply understand how to coordinate the arms and the legs for a successful pump. I was witnessing the more experienced riders getting up on foil quite easily on a 10-12knot day, whereas I couldn't progress past just taxi-ing. Can't wait to try this tip out, first on land then on the board. Thanks for what you do!

    Very nice series on how to wingfoil. Interesting how the techniques seem to borrow things from several other board sports. Pumping the foil kind of reminds me of an ollie in skateboarding, while the rest all makes sense from my windsurfing background.

    Another excellent tutorial! The only thing I would have added in the narrative is that the front to back foot weight shifting can be pretty subtle and it still works well. Like one friend said to me, "think about jumping up and down more than rocking forward and back. The forward and back shifting almost happens automatically when you use the correct oval pump and full body extension you describe so well. At the most, I think about stomping the back foot harder when reaching up. I admit this is a minor point, but when teaching in person saying "oval pump and jump up and down!" is simpler than explaining everything!
    I love that you show practicing the wing handling on shore. I believe people spend too little time on shore when learning new things, thinking that shore time is only for rank beginners. In fact spending too little shore time to perfect your wing handling is how to get stuck in beginning phases of learning!

    I don't know what I can add that hasn't already been said, but this has been the best tutorial. The repetition and graphics are excellent! I was imagining the oval pumping motion much rounder, so that's been helpful to see, the descriptions of upward and forward acceleration really helped to hone the concepts. Thanks so much! Going to look for your tips how to ride on foil now..

    Great video. The contraction has made a huge difference helping the board unweigh and pop for me!
    I think the other trepidation I’ve had is pushing the back foot down during the extension phase: I haven’t really had an extension phase and I believe it’s because I’ve tried to unweigh the board through both strokes of the pumping process. The explanation you give where you push the back foot in during extension to help pitch the board up makes perfect sense. I’ll try to put that knowledge to use today :)

    Another excellent tutorial. Explains not only the what but the why. Thank you.
    Something that seems to work for me is to change the cadence of the pumping - slower at the start, faster at the end. This is done by feel. There is a particular pumping rate that seems to get into 'resonance'. And that rate changes from beginning to end (taxiing to foiling) as the board speed increases. Or it might be just starting off slowly until the resonance is achieved ? I am still experimenting with this. But, whatever, it seems to take less overall energy to get onto the foil using this approach. YMMV.

    • @kitesurfcollege
      @kitesurfcollege  3 роки тому +1

      Hi K Shred. I think that's definitely true, I phrased it as gradually increasing the energy you put in, but I definitely increase the frequency pumps on the last few. I guess early pumps must be slower be necessity, since the sunk board has a slow rocking motion in the water. But once the board escapes the grasp of the water, it's possible to pump more quickly as the board becomes more responsive. And that makes sense, when pumping a foil on it's own, without a wing, faster pumps help gain speed (as long as they're not so frequent that you fail to pitch the board up and down of course).

    It is difficult to figure out if the pumping circle has its axis parallel to the central strut, so the wing is moving up and down and left and right, or parallel to the the leading edge, moving forward and back.

    Hi! thank so much for this video. I have been trying to get on foil with f one rocket air 7'11 x 31, 2200 foil and 8 m wing without success in 8-14 knot. that is the usual wind in my area. Please, I would love to hear your comments about my next board thinking the most efficient aboard for light wind.
    I,m 105 kg 1.97 cm tall / 230 lb 6'5 tall.
    I have 3 boards in mind,
    f one rocket air 5'10 x 29 (inflatable 125 lts) is it too small or better 6'6? no option to adjust foil
    fanatic sky air premium 5,10 x 28.5 (inflatable 140 lts) oval shape for light wind? worth hard board price tag? the only one with foot strap option and foil adjustment for inflatable
    f one rocket v2 6'0 30 (hard board 120 lts) huge and expensive, will this be my final board or smaller later? no foot straps option
    will a hard board make huge difference for takeoff in light wind?
    will a more rectangular shape will help panning in order get on foil faster?
    Ultimately I like to buy whatever gets me more time in the water in light wind considering my weight!
    thanks so much, have a good day!

    • @kitesurfcollege
      @kitesurfcollege  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Michael, getting out in less wind is mostly down to pumping technique. Once you have that, then your own strength to weight ratio is a big factor as this further improves your pumping. That will improve as you wing more. Next most important is your front wing size (2200 Is good for light wind if you're around 85kg). Next most important is the stiffness of the hand wing, older wings tend to bend when pumped aggressively meaning you're not getting the full benefit of pumping. A rigid 6m is better than a floppy 8m for pump take offs. Having a board with enough volume that you can stand on it in a few knots will really help - then you can get ready for the gust that helps you take off. The shape and constriction of the board helps, but is less important than the foil and pumping ability. You want a fairly low rocker with a squared off tail. Some inflatable boards are flexible to the point that your pumping is less effective, but I've heard the best inflatables that can be pumped with more pressure and with reinforced plates are close to the solid boards. Generally you want to go for solid boards unless you really need to roll up the board for transport.
