  • In this video, I will review what causes and worsens arthritis. Did you know that there’s much more to osteoarthritis than just a simple wear and tear disease? We now understand that arthritis is far more complex, involving not just the joints, but also our weight, metabolic health, and even our lifestyle choices. And the reason you should care is because osteoarthritis is a complex interplay of metabolic factors and inflammation, all of which can be controlled through lifestyle modifications and a proactive approach to self care.

I have never been overweight or have a metabolic dysfunction, and follow a Mediterranean diet and IF. I walk everyday and bike and other exercises, although I did not always. I still have osteoarthritis. My only inflammatory contributing factor was long term stress.

I have a complex case too and cannot figure out why I have stiffness each morning from arthritis. I removed sugar and eat oatmeal, chicken, salmon and lots of salmon and no processed foods. I also exercise each week….

@@lindagalentino8864 I have chronic back pain, surgery is complicated and chose not to have it. I had two TKR that did not take the pain away.
I have to workout everyday just to keep mobile. The lack of activity after each knee replacement and the pandemic aggravated my symptoms. You go down hill fast, but it takes years to go back up.

I have not done anything in regard to my spinal osteoarthritis because of that. Just walking, stationary bike, PT and core strength training.

LOVE your videos ... but I must be the exception regarding "weight loss improving arthritis" ... starting in my early 60s i had pain in my left hip ... (yes i was obese ... i'm 5' 6" and weighed a max of 226 pounds) ... over the years, gradually ... the pain got worse and i started limping ... June 20, 2021 my left thumb started twitching by itself! I've been to a neuro/MDS ... I don't "present with Parkinson" ... but I now have tens of thousands of "internal tremors" daily ... So today is day #620 of my O.M.A.D. (one meal a day) diet ... because "diet and exercise" are the only known ways to slow down PD ... So I lost nearly 60 pounds! However... my left hip pain and limp became more severe ... I visited an orthopedic doctor 2 weeks ago ... was xrayed ... and diagnosed with osteoarthritis and he said I need a TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT (which is why I'm watching your videos! LOL) ... So sadly, weight loss did not slow down, let alone stop my OA.

Hi sir. Really inspiring to see a doctor making time out of their busy schedule for us. My dad has had prp done for his left knee joint. A few days after it started getting better. But, 2 weeks passed and he is in severe pain again. Not able to sleep cause of pain, not able to stretch his leg straight, He keeps the knee bent and says he is not able to straighten it. Do you think it's the arthritis getting bad or should we wait for the prp to work?

Overall cholesterol is borderline. I'm 120lbs, 5ft 5". No FAI, no labral tear. I do however have Hypermobility syndrome and SI joint Hypermobility. I have always been active and exercised regularly, weights and elliptical. Stopped aerobics at 24 to avoid high impact. My mother has arthritis. In 2018 my hip xrays looked normal. Started getting pains in area 2020. Did not do much weight training 2020-2022 due to gyms being closed. Mostly cardio & stretching, lost muscle and I was sitting a lot for work. I fell hard on that hip 10 years ago but was fine after. Could the cartilage have gotten damaged? I'm so confused I don't understand what caused it and would like to get some clue because I'm afraid for the right side. I have resumed weight training, stretching, pilates as of November. Any input would be so appreciated 🙏

Me too. I am so confused. I got checked out in my early 30s that I had high cholesterol, low HDL, high triglycerides. I have been taking meds to keep those in check. So does that not count? Over night I developed bone one bone knees. At the same time. Nothing really changed for 15 year. I finally got TKR. I took everything, did everything people said to do. I was never or have been obese. I rarely sit around until knees went south. I believe walking is the worst exercise for you. I can't help to think walking wore my knees out. Could it have been walking incorrectly? Who knows. If walking was good for you I would be super healthy. I believe you need to get you heart rate up. Even if it's 10 minutes a week. Why after being diagnosed with bone on bone knees and OA has it not gone to other part of the body? I still haven't totally ruled out sugar. I have tried substitutes like honey but from what I read sugar is sugar. I don't drink or smoke. Sodas and tea are my vices if you will. I drink those daily but not like more that a liter of either. Then turn to juices and add water to reduce the sweetness. I can't help to think the is not something in the air or water.

@@JeffreyPengMDI think in majority of people. The metabolic syndrome is making worse but it's not causing OA.

@robertchateau3597 just today my mother who has had 2 knee replacements said that she thinks walking wore down her knees. She walked and walked a lot of her younger life to go everywhere. She has hypermobility syndrome too and this can affect how you walk, thus putting pressure on knees. My HDL is now lower than what it should be and my LDL is higher than what it should be, but overall cholesterol is borderline. I also drink diet soda daily but no more than about 2 glasses. During the pandemic when my hip degraded I was walking and stretching for exercise and not doing much weights as gyms were closed. But I believe as doc said genetics has a large part to do with it.

Thanks for commenting. This is best discussed with your doc and an in depth evaluation of your metabolic health (which includes blood pressure!). At the end of the day, metabolic health is a very common cause of arthritis, but not the only cause! Genetics, injury, biomechanics, etc all play a role

From my research, you hit the mail on the head that metabolic syndrome is the cause….sorry to say though you lost me with your diet recommendations. Keto has cured thousands of people of metabolic syndrome. My husband and I are proving this also by eating keto/mostly animal foods lifestyle 👍🏼❤️👊🏽

Our ancestors that were carnivores lived a very short life. Most communities that are in blue zone, healthy and with long lives, usually eat very little meat. Purchase their food daily and do not drink soda or juice. They also walk and climb stair a lot. I prefer a Mediterranean diet to keto. All keto accomplished, for me, was to spike my cholesterol. I’m otherwise healthy with lower BP, A1C etc. my only issue is my osteoarthritis.

Bariatric surgery does not last, people gain the weight back unless they drastically change what they eat and how much of it. I have a friend that went through that surgery…the outcome was not great in the long term.

Arthritis is much more complicated than weight, blood sugar and cholesterol. I've always been thin with normal blood sugar, normal cholesterol and eat only whole and unprocessed foods yet I have arthritis. I don't use sugar or eat refined carbs either. Go figure.

You dont have to diabetes or prediabetes to have chronically high blood sugar or frequent spikes. We'd all do well to moderate our carb intake and replace refined sugars for non-starchy vegetables, berries, protein, wholefood forms of fats such as avocados, olives, nuts and seeds etc.
Carbs are less inflammatory when from beans, butternut squash and fruit.

I have never been overweight or have a metabolic dysfunction, and follow a Mediterranean diet and IF. I walk everyday and bike and other exercises, although I did not always. I still have osteoarthritis. My only inflammatory contributing factor was long term stress.
