I was working on a construction site in the early 90s and this came on the radio. I dropped my tools, walked to the radio and stood there and after it was done, I yelled out "Who is That!!!" Been a huge fan ever since.
Same here only I was driving to work. I heard this, and 38 Years Old and At The Hundredth Meridian…. I thought “Who is this band?” I finally bought Up To Here and then all the rest. Saw the Hip live more than any other band. I miss seeing them.
Really fair score. As others have said Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip are a Canadian institution. Gord and Neil Pert died from the same kind of brain cancer. We lost 2 of our greatest musicians of all time to it. The Tragically Hip preformed their last concert during the Rio Olympics during 2016, they stopped airing the Olympics to show the concert on CBC. They haven't stopped showing the Olympics for anything.
Love The Tragically Hip. This is a very early song from them, they have large catalog of great music. Gord Downie( RIP ) was a great singer/songwriter and a Canadian treasure. Do more from them please "Locked in the Trunk of a Car" is a favorite of mine. Thanks David.
This song was written (musically) from a jam out of Baby Please Don't Go. Listen to the Them version on UA-cam and you can totally hear it. Songwriting, it was about a trip he took there when he was young. He said everything you need to know about the song is the way he pronounces New Orleeens. They have a more serious song later in their career called, "If New Orleans is beat," where he pronounces it Orr-lee-ins throughout.
As a Canadian, I love that you're reviewing the Tragically Hip. Sadly their lead singer recently passed and they won't be touring any longer. Ironically, they did some studio work in New Orleans and recently released 6 previously unreleased songs posthumously titled Saskaphiladelphia. Greatest Canadian band imho(just because I like them more than Rush, even though I acknowledge Rush's superior musicianship), I appreciate the poetry from Gord Downie that much more and could quite LITERALLY listen to any and all Hip songs over and over and over. I can only do that with Tool and the Hip.
They put out a greatest hits album with a live version on it that is leaps and bounds better than the studio album, but that again is just my opinion. I don't have a link for you, but if I ever find one and I remember this I'll come back and link it.
The drummer of this band is very tight in the pocket imho, but not flashy AT all. Gord Downie is a poet. A lot of their songs tend to stay very standard rock with the snare accents almost nearly always on 2 and 4 and enhancing the guitar work and lyrics. My overall review. Still way better than I could do it though, lol.
7.5 isn't all that bad all things considering. I'm glad you didn't go into the 6's. I still think the live version would bring up the score to high 7's and maybe low 8's. Fair again. So far I haven't been tooo offended at all by your scores. I see a double shot of the Hip in the queue. Hopefully those got better scores. Grace, too is beautiful, and Nautical Disaster is so sad. Away we go. Thanks again.
In his obituary in the New York Times, they said if you combined Dylan, Springsteen and Michael Stipe into one, you would only be approaching the genius of Gord Downie - so perhaps you are missing something?
As for the part when the band drop the 12 bar and just chug, in concert this was a regular thing. The band would just sit back and leave room for Gord to improvise lyrics or go off on streams of consciousness- sometimes those streams became their own songs. There’s a whole performance on UA-cam from Woodstock, it’s early days, but you see the early stages of Gord inserting different lyrics or adding improvised thoughts into or around songs. The band were tight enough to absorb it
This is the song that got me into them. Been a life long fan ever since. Got to see them on the Day for Night tour in 95. It's a shame I didn't go out of my way to see them more. One of the best live bands around.
First band i ever seen here in Victoria BC when i was 18. apparently after the hurricane that decimated N.O they wouldnt allow this song on local radio stations lol Gord and The Hip were Canadas secret success. they were big in Canada but failed to make it big in the US. thats not to say they did "bad" but they were always bigger in Canada. They were a great LIVE band to see. The first Rock The Shores festival here in Victoria there was a thunder & lightning storm that threatened to end the night. Sam Roberts was only able to perform 3 songs before he was forced off stage. Gord & The Hip waited an hour and still decided to play for us fans, despite the threat of lightning striking the stage and them as well. As well Gord stood up for Fist Nations communities and the atrocities that occurred at/from residential schools. On October 22, 1966 near Kenora, Ontario, Chanie Wenjack died when he walking home to the family he was taken from over 400 miles away. Fifty years later, Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie has taken Wenjack's story and turned it into the Secret Path project, including a solo album, a graphic novel and an animated film. For this he was recognized by The Assembly Of First Nations here in Canada. he was a national treasure of sorts to many Canadian fans including our Prime Minister. I am fine with your score. This was one of the most recognized songs but some can take a few listens to get to ya. anyways thanks for this be safe cioa for now
The rest of the band follow Gords lead. The poet extraordinaire. Staying on the root for the last bit puts the emphasis on what Gord is trying to get across to the audience.
I LOVE Grace Too, BUT this would have been a MUCH better first song for the Tragically Hip. A lot of their songs have a bluesy rock feel. I THINK I put in Locked In The Trunk of the Car, another feel to their sound once you get to it.
This song came out in 1989 but the name of the song was almost like a prediction of what was to come 16 years later, which after that happened the radio stations quit playing this song out of respect for the victims of it
Solid review 🤙 love the Hip... Gord (RIP) has a unique voice and delivery.. there's a great documentary "Long time running" might be a good Patreon reaction.. can't wait for my hip request now lol probably next year (not a dig).. love showing live performances, really get a feel of the band... good stuff man.
BC Land Is Sinking --- All right Blueberries in the deep, sow but not reap Under skies ominous blue grey Had to forsake my home that's a lake So all we could do was pray My memory is muddy, what's this state that I'm in? BC Land is sinkin', man, and I don't wanna swim Premier John, what's wrong, what's goin' on? Few forecasters at the RFC Red sky in mornin', early flood warnin' You gotta do what you know is key Ain't got no dry belongings, ain't got no souvenirs What does the future hold now, I'm thinkin' 'bout those years Pickin' out highlights of the scenery Tulameen, Similkameen, Sumas Prairie Coquihalla, Chilliwack, and the Fraser Nicola, Spius, Coldwater, see you later I had my feet in the river, now the sandbags on the banks Looked up to the Lord above and said, "Hey, man, thanks" Sometimes I feel so bad I gotta scream Then said that guy Noah, "I know exactly what you mean" He said, he said, I swear to God he said Oh, no No, yeah! My memory is clearcut, what's this state that I'm in? BC Land is floodin', man, and I don't wanna swim BC Land needs new floor plan 'cause I don't wanna swim Swim
Gord Downie also did SO MUCH during his lifetime to help native Canadians! Unless you pick Terry Fox, I'd argue Gord Downie was the greatest Canadian to ever live
Yeah, what the other guy said about the lyrics. Some of the deepest poetry in music there is. I get that your about breaking down the structure of the song but you need to smoke a joint and figure out the meaning, dude.
This reviewer isn't listening to the song, just the music.. and that is perfectly fine.. The Hip didn’t get famous because of thier skill as musicians although they definitely have skills. We can keep The Hip as Canada's own!
[ This song was suspended from radio play during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina ] DUDE!! As many others have noted, the "Hip" are about poetry. I reaIise that 27% of most populations are considered functionally illiterate, but if the words are incomprehensible to you because of accent or whatever, get someone who CAN read to write them down for you...oh wait: that won't help if you can't read. ..from there it depends on whether you possess the ability to actually think...or not.
Funny you mention a southern sound, aren't all Canadian bands southern rock bands. ( isn't like 85% of Canada's population is in the southern part of the country)
I actually did a reaction to that song....and it was blocked by UA-cam. It's posted up on the Patreon page if you wanna check it out, totally up to you.
Wow this song is awesome. I've heard of the band before but never listened to them. Excited to get into them now
This is the beginning of their genius. You'll get it as you go through it all. Beautiful trip
One of us, one of us 😅
Finally, one of the greatest Canadian bands of all time, one of my favorite songs
What a band, I love the Hip!

if he does get to then again its because its already in the Q somewhere.. otherwise your waiting a loooong time for another Hip reaction lol
@@nukchuu1 LOL, yeah right
@@nukchuu1 one of my requests still in the queue lol it'll be coming, god knows when but it's all good

I would absolutely subscribe for more Hip. Not a lot of Hip reactions on youtube. Corner them Canadian views.
so would I
The rest of the band follow Gords lead. The poet extraordinaire. Staying on the root for the last bit puts the emphasis on what Gord is trying to get across to the audience.
Yes! You finally got to it! Thanks David, looking forward to the next!

VERY nice score DH! I'd thought it would hit a 7 with you at best :)
This song came out in 89. No band like the hip♥️🇨🇦rip Gord
The legendary producer Don Smith did this album. His records ALWAYS sound great.
One of my all time fav Hip songs! RIP Gord :(

BC Land Is Sinking
---
All right
Blueberries in the deep, sow but not reap
Under skies ominous blue grey
Had to forsake my home that's a lake
So all we could do was pray
My memory is muddy, what's this state that I'm in?
BC Land is sinkin', man, and I don't wanna swim
Premier John, what's wrong, what's goin' on?
Few forecasters at the RFC
Red sky in mornin', early flood warnin'
You gotta do what you know is key
Ain't got no dry belongings, ain't got no souvenirs
What does the future hold now, I'm thinkin' 'bout those years
Pickin' out highlights of the scenery
Tulameen, Similkameen, Sumas Prairie
Coquihalla, Chilliwack, and the Fraser
Nicola, Spius, Coldwater, see you later
I had my feet in the river, now the sandbags on the banks
Looked up to the Lord above and said, "Hey, man, thanks"
Sometimes I feel so bad I gotta scream
Then said that guy Noah, "I know exactly what you mean"
He said, he said, I swear to God he said
Oh, no
No, yeah!
My memory is clearcut, what's this state that I'm in?
BC Land is floodin', man, and I don't wanna swim
BC Land needs new floor plan 'cause I don't wanna swim
Swim
Gord Downie also did SO MUCH during his lifetime to help native Canadians!
Unless you pick Terry Fox, I'd argue Gord Downie was the greatest Canadian to ever live
There’s another version of this song with a beautiful guitar lick on top of the song
I'd recommend their song Little Bones - catchy as hell.
They probably broke from the 12 bar blues format for a minute to let Gord Downie do his thing maybe?
So Glad you did The Hip. Love them.
Yeah, what the other guy said about the lyrics. Some of the deepest poetry in music there is. I get that your about breaking down the structure of the song but you need to smoke a joint and figure out the meaning, dude.
Never touch the stuff. I have no problem with others using if they choose to, I just choose not to use it.
I watched these guys 3 times live
Canadian Royalty here.
Bad call. This song rocks, plain and simple. 8.6
RIP Gord Downie...
Yankee doodle went to town, riding on a pony, stuck it by there in his head and called it macaroni.
This reviewer isn't listening to the song, just the music.. and that is perfectly fine.. The Hip didn’t get famous because of thier skill as musicians although they definitely have skills. We can keep The Hip as Canada's own!

The Hip are best enjoyed live. I hate the term, but they are a jam band.
Who is this band?
He sings hey North, your South, shut your big mouth lol north is Canadian and South is American
Funny you mention a southern sound, aren't all Canadian bands southern rock bands. ( isn't like 85% of Canada's population is in the southern part of the country)
The reality is New Oreans is sinking.thank God
