This was intially wrritten in the memory of George Pelawa. A draft choice and player for the Mnnesota North Stars. He got smoked in a head on wreck with the other vehicle going 70 in the wrong lane.

BUT BUT BUT... Less we forget... The Humboldt, Hockey, Team Bus tragedy happened in Saskatchewan... and many, MANY people in Saskatchewan will be reminded of the Swift Current Broncos Team Bus Tragedy... AND there seems little doubt that Tom Cochrane, in his Humboldt tribute, was fully cognizant of this too... That Swift Current Bronco tragedy was many, MANY years ago... This is STRICTLY FROM MEMORY, and has been taken, in part, from a post I made elsewhere, so hopefully, nobody feels inclined to crucify me... xxx let's recall (and by memorializing them, PAY TRIBUTE as well) to the 4 Swift Current Bronco's who likewise died in a bus crash... Former NHL coach, Lindy Ruff's little brother was one of them, was he not? Not unlike George Pelawa, I seem to recall people were predicting big things, in the BIG LEAGUE, for Lindy's little bro too... Again, if I'm not mistaken, future NHL hall of famer, Joe Sakic was on that Swift Current Broncos, team bus... Fortuitously for him, sitting up front... If I'm not mistaken the four, Swift Current players who died were in the back of the team bus, playing cards... One of them, a big guy, was the team enforcer... Sorry, I don't wanna guess and butcher his name, pretty sure it started with M... Man I can't shake this... I remember hearing that M was still conscious and telling team mates to, 'Get this bus off of me'... But there was nothing anyone could do... Doubtless, those former Swift Current team mates still have nightmares...Doubtless surviving Humboldt players do too... People never think about the risks those teenage kids take, in their quest to make The Big League... All those late night bus rides, on windswept, snowy, prairie roads, sometimes... too damn often, let's face it... in driving snowstorms... i would be remiss if I didn't mention another hockey player, seemingly on the brink of Big League stardom, whose dreams, along with those of his loved ones, were suddenly and unexpectedly shattered xxx The woman who used to cut my hair... a single mom... Nice lady... Her son was a hockey player, drafted by the New York Rangers... A D-man, if memory serves... Word is, his Junior A coach called him, 'a diamond in the rough' (Think he played for Kitchener Rangers, though it might have been a different OHL, Major Junior A Team... It was MANY YEARS AGO (late seventies, maybe?)... He was 18, (same age as George Pelawa)... He told his mom, when he made the NHL, he was going to buy her diamonds & furs... He was slated to attend his first NHL training camp at summer's end, but he never did... He & some friends were headed north to a cottage, for the weekend... There was a car crash... one fatality, him... Again, if memory serves, his name was Jim McGeachie... not too sure about the spelling.. PEACE OUT
