There is a saying in Canada that we shared Rush with the world but kept Tragically Hip for ourselves and only ourselves.

So this is Hip, I never heard their music. I know that Eddie Vedder talk about him when they performed in Canada. I absolutely love his dynamics you can't take your eyes of him so much expression!! Love this and very intriguing. Thank You Rory awesome reaction and thank You Scott for the request, that was awesome!! 😊💓🤘✌️

wahey, you finally found the hip! get on it Rory. you're gonna love it. The hip were massive in Canada. When Gordie died there was a comment from a farewell video which touched me.. it said " Sorry, Canada has closed for today, There's been a death in the family!" ..nuf said. The hip, more Rush, you'm gonna be a busy boy.

How these guys were not huge outside of Canada is beyond me. But we were just as happy to have them as OUR band. Huge Rush fan here and come for all your Rush reactions. So glad you're getting into The Hip. Keep doing these and I'll be back for every one. Got to see these guys OPEN for Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens in the early 90's front row! Sadly I only saw them live a couple more times after that which is a huge regret of mine. Much of Canada watched their what we knew would be their final concert. It was EXTREMELY emotional. If you watch any of that be aware that Gord was quite sick. An amazing performance given the circumstances.

Dan Akroyd tried to break them out by having them on Saturday Night Live as well. The Hip and Dan Akroyd share the hometown of Kinston Ontario.

Love the Hip! ❤ This was a mixture of a couple songs including ahead by a century but some lyrics were changed for this performance 😉
Rush wanted to take them on tour with them through the States but their management said that they were breaking in Europe so they declined the offer which I think was a shame. It would have given them better exposure.
Gord Downie the lead vocalist passed from the same form of brain cancer as Neil Peart.
So sad. They did one last tour when Gord was nearing the end of his life and the show was televised across Canada
It was Gord's last good bye.

What a fire reaction. I knew you’d connect to Gord’s stage presence. He is The Hip. I must say that was the tamest Hip crowd ever. I saw them 13 times and my whole body ached the next day each time. His presence just took over my body each time. “Yes” Rory…he said what you thought he said. I miss Gord. As you said, he was funny, charismatic, unique, and a lyrical genius! Agreed…Morrison like for sure on stage. You meet him though and he is the kindest person in the world.

The Hip are as diverse as our beautiful country of Canada. They told our stories through poetry and music. Most if their music has a touch of truth behind it. Fascinating band. Absolutely amazing live it was an experience you never forget Blessed to have seen them in a cottage bar that sits on Lake Muskoka The Kee to Bala. You heard what you thought you heard on the first line. The second line is more about touching his roster than his heart.
But what you really heard was the first draft of what would become their biggest hit, Ahead By A Century. Live, Gord would rant in place of the usual guitar solo. Many rants would go on to become songs of their own. That bit at the end became Springtime In Vienna.

Ok, I've watched a few of your vids before and when I pour myself a good old Crown and coke I might revisit your channel. Let's not just brush by in any second that you've actually went deep on The Hip and I thank you for that as you now know how the meant for me as a teen then to an adult (Dad). But I can re watch this even though is lived this, Gord actuall hit four albums in one and I mean his most 1 hit song. I won't write all 4 albums but let's agree that the Hip were on top of their game even before a kid at the time in Ottawa Canada knew what a true preformance was. Just a quick that you to your uploads and your thought on if the guitarist was connected or wasn't. All I remember was if the Hip was in town or was the hot summer where they wern't around you. The radio played and Gord spoke to me and so did those dirty ass beats.

.. Great breakdown! ... Just a note when you ask at minute mark 2: 40 ".." it looks like Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac..." I was thinking more Jimmy Page, circa 1972-74 .. Just by the hair and the top... however as you know it's the opposite side of the stage , Jimmy always played left of Robert plant .. Like many other greats ..aka , Pete Townsend was always left of Roger Daltry... But I love the Hip , regardless of their place on stage, feel privileged to having seen them... !!

And I have to say as a Hip fan I never heard this ever, ever before in any rendition of this tune /other music… No judgement I'm just in wonderment at this point.... I'm glad we're not completely censored (yet) here in Canada... What would Justin Trudeau "True -Dope" say...lol...

the cookie factory was definitely a reference because that's was not part of the original song. That's why seeing a band live is a different experience. I am pretty sure he said what you think he said and those are also not the original lyrics and he went from New Orleans is Sinking to Ahead By a Century and back to new orleans is sinking. Gordon Downie is an absolute legend. First we'll climb a tree, and then maybe then we'll talk, or sit silently and listen to our thoughts... but that's not what he said.

Hip fans are taking the piss a bit when they say The Hip didn't care about making it outside of Canada. The toured the United States repeatedly but could never break into the radio market down there. It probably didn't help that even down in Texas their shows tickets in smaller venues would be snapped up by Ex-Pats and Canadian fans. Thus really limiting the growth of the fan base down there.
