i used to get military surplus gun lists in 1960's, italian rifles were $7, german mausers $11, enfield .303 $12. that was 15 years after wwII so military surplus was very plentiful.

pretty funny how milsurp imports were targeted in order to raise those prices right after bill failed to pass his eu style gun ban and confiscation bill isnt it? it is almost as if they have been working to price the poor people that stood up and said no out of the equation by removing their ability to own and operate firearms? they saw that we used them to put meat in our freezers so they decided to make sure that any cost savings to be had in that regard vanished. if it costs more for ammo and a licsens than it does to simply buy meat poor people wont be hunting as much. if you cant afford ammo to help teach your kid to be a sharp shooter then you end up with a population free of those pesky hunters that stood up and said no for the next time they move to pass a law that turns us fully back into being subjects again

There is a double-edged sword aspect to rifles in unusual cartridges, the plus is if somebody else gets your rifle they will not easily be able to supply ammo for it, especially in a shtf, but if you own it, odds are you stocked up on ammo and if you're smart you will have purchased reloading dies for that caliber, of course the downside is ammo is not common or plentiful.

PS: On the subject of Tokarevs, a VERY important caveat, almost _ENTIRELY_ ignored "in print" -- the firing pin.
The Tokarevs have a reputation for being "drop-unsafe" and I in fact met someone who had shot himself in the leg -- the pistol fell, discharged, and the _fast_ bullet passed through his leg, through the bone, into his knee, through the bone, _out_ his knee, into a 4x4 wooden post, _through_ the post, and into the sky.
The problem is that they use a "live" firing pin, making it COMPLETELY UNSAFE to carry "hammer-down" on a loaded chamber! The hammer presses the firing pin into the primer, and the _least_ amount of "tapping" on the hammer will set it off.
There is a guy (in Serbia, I believe) who has a UA-cam channel, and in one of his videos, he holds his M57, hammer down, aimed downrange, while his assistant gives the hammer a tap with a piece of wood. *BOOM!*
Almost ALL pistols use an _inertial_ firing pin -- the hammer hits the firing pin, sends it flying, and it then strikes the primer. The firing pin is NOT long enough to be in contact with the hammer and the primer at the same time.
As a result, many people think it's "safer" to keep the hammer _down,_ so that it can't "accidentally be released."
This is _severely_ BAD "medicine" on a weapon with a LIVE firing pin!
I periodically point this out online, ever since I learned of that "unique feature" of an otherwise pretty clever design (the entire firing mechanism lifts right out of the gun when the slide is removed!)
I don't know why Gospodin Tokarev designed it that way, other than _perhaps_ to ensure better reliability with "less than excellent quality" soviet primers. That is wild speculation on my part, if anyone knows the actual reason I'd really like to know what it is.

@NoName99 NoFace88 -- from examining one I must admit that there is a certain overall elegance to it; for one thing it's almost impossibly _thin_ -- and not to mention it having been the _most_ powerful handgun issued by any military in WW2, nearly _twice_ as potent as the .45ACP.
But that live firing pin is a real off-putter. Now, the one I examined was the "civilian" Yugo, with a fairly decent safety milled into the slide (unlike the "for importation reasons" trigger-blocking "safety" endemic to all of the milsurps). So, the one I examined, while _not_ having a half-cock (even though the manual said it did have one -- _bad_ Zastava!), IMO _should_ be able to be safely carried cocked and locked.
_However..._ If there should ever be a need for it to be "fired in anger" I fear the almost universal "post-action" action would be to -- without even thinking about it -- lower the hammer.
      Oops!
A pity no one makes an inertial firing pin kit for them.

Can a Toke be set up with a left hand safety like a M 1911??

    • @This_is_my_real_name
      @This_is_my_real_name 2 роки тому +1

@@davekoenig9935 -- I guess it depends on how you define "safety."
The Tokarev does not have any safety other than the half-cock position. It is designed to be carried with either an empty chamber, or, a loaded chamber and the hammer on half-cock (unlike virtually every other weapon _with_ a half-cock).
The modern M57A apparently begins with a normal Tokarev slide, in which a hole is then milled _almost_ completely from left to right, and, the left side of the hole has an area milled into the surface of the slide (where the serrations are located), to provide a space for the safety lever to move.
When this slide-mounted safety is engaged, the hammer is blocked from striking the firing pin, and the firing pin is locked, so that even if the weapon is dropped nose-down onto a hard surface, the firing pin cannot strike the primer.
On a "normal" Tokarev (one not modified as per the above), a "safety" is added, so that it will be legal to import to the USA. This "safety" is just a trigger-block. It does not lock the hammer, does not _block_ the hammer, and does nothing to the firing pin.
This "safety" is generally in the form of a small lever attached to a pin, which is fitted into a hole drilled into the frame. It is clearly an afterthought and does not "blend" well into the (for lack of a better term) cosmetics.
I have seen _one_ Tokarev type that has a "safety" in the form of a "Glock type" trigger. The standard trigger has a slot milled down the center, with a small metal plate mounted in the slot, the plate locking the trigger unless the plate is pressed.
Basically, you cannot pull the trigger, unless you... pull the trigger. Just like a Glock.
I am BTW _convinced_ that the Glock "safety" was added as a bit of a practical joke in order to get a chuckle out of the insanity of the US importation requirement. "OK, we added a safety. Now you cannot pull the trigger unless the safety is actuated!"
Or to put it more succinctly, you cannot pull the trigger, unless you... pull the trigger.
So I can understand why a foreign company would do such a thing to enable their product to be exported to the USA, but for an _American_ company to _ape_ that "safety" on a weapon that does NOT have "importation criteria" for which it must comply?
I digress. If you want a 1911 type safety you will need to speak with a gunsmith that has a fully equipped machine shop and is skilled in the use of his machinery.
That, and a relatively deep wallet.

@@andrewgates9333 that is almost painful in its inaccuracy. While the C96 can chamber 7.62x25mm it cannot fire many rounds before the much hotter round will cause serious damage. Even when they were producing new Broomhandles German service members would destroy their C96s by firing captured Tok ammunition out of the when they ran out of 7.63 ammo. The C96 while awesome (one of my favorite semi auto sidearms) is just a much weaker design.

Some of the long Carcanos were built with gain twist rifling. They were converted to carbines by the Italian government by shortening the barrels. Unfortunately this removed the gain twist part of the rifling,, and what was left wasn't fast enough to stabilize the long, heavy standard Carano bullet. The only fix for this is to shoot shorter, lighter bullets.

The CZ-52 was not designed for, nor should ever be run with, "hot" submachinegun 7.62x25 Tokarev ammunition. In doing so you're liable to shatter the firing pin and/or crack the slide, rendering the firearm unsafe for use.

Carcano clips are available if you know where to look. Also, to anyone who says a Makarov design in .32/.380 is anemic, I invite you to fire a 9x18 Polish P-64. Because it has a fixed barrel, none of the recoil energy is expended by being converted to work before it reaches your hand. There's a reason the PP and subsequent designs were chambered in smaller calibers.

I love my VZ70. The DA trigger is heavy (hey, it's a milsurp!), but smooth, and the SA is pretty nice. Recoil is basically nonexistent, and it's an accurate little cuss.
Only thing to beware of - don't dry fire the pistol a lot. The steel used in the firing pins for a lot of CZ pistols of that era wasn't the best, and the firing pins can become brittle from dry-firing.

They would have every manufacturer from time to time if you were willing to check a couple of times a month. I remember a few IHC Garands and IBM Carbines in the mix. They sold them in their store on Broadway in Manhattan right across from city hall as well as other stores. When I graduated HS I bought a '43 Springfield every part original SA as was the barrel. Still have it and it will group 3.5-4.25" at 100 yds. with 150 gr. ball through the irons. Hard core Minute of Man main battle rifle - not a polyplastic .22 toy like these ARs/M-Forgeries. The cheapest that I have seen in over ten years even on gun broker was $400 and typically the decent to good ones have been $450 and up. Also you should have mentioned that they suffer from a few issues like brittle firing pins, they cannot handle hotter ammunition (typically said to be a Tokarev issue but incorrectly so) in part because of the roller locking design and the thin chamber wall and the thumb safety is also a decocker but you do not want to use it to decock the pistol because due to the metallurgy issues that the Czechs had the decocker can actually fire the pistol.

IDK what 7.62x55 is, but the Tokarev, or the Romanian TT-33 is 7.62x25, which has shown to penetrate body armor that some very popular calibers won’t. There are videos demonstrating this, and judging from many of the comments on those videos, those types who won’t own anything that isn’t a Glock, a Colt, a S&W, or a Barreta, find this so offensive that they will criticize the test method… or try to make a case for something like a $150 Century Arms Romanian TT-33 being way too heavy and bulky to ever serve very well as a usable sidearm. It’s the old “It isn’t whether you win or lose, it’s how you look while playing the game…” mindset.

I sold everything surplus except a M98 and an 03A3.And a flare gun. Interests change and profits were hard to turn down .Some SKS's sold for a grand plus.. It was bought for speculation and that flower has bloomed.

Just 7-8 years ago I could go into an off the beaten path gun shop or pawn shop and get nice SKS, AKs Mosins etc. for under 300. But since the 80's I have a obsession for spam cans and mil surp crates of ammo. When it was cheap, I stacked it deep.

In the late 70's Woolworths would have wooden barrels full of 8mm bolt actions for $59, and they went down to $39 on sale. Early 80's I bought a brand new Dan Wesson .357 mag pistol pac with case, 2,4,6, and 8" barrels, target and combat grips, belt buckle and tools for $169 brand new

Well I've been looking hard at some M1 carbines and K98 but the prices just keep me looking.
RTI had some cool rifes from Africa but there prices are over the top.

I tried ordering from RTI and they cancelled my order with no notice because the FFL, sent from a full firearms store, was "invalid".

PA-63. . . Mine came with recoil springs that must have been rejects from the BIC pen factory. Replacements from Wolff, and they are very reliable and accurate. As a blow-back with a bit more power than .380 ACP, with a light frame, recoil is fairly stiff. I like mine.

Wolff springs are awesome. I have a 21lb one on my makarov. I also have the fab defense grip that converts the heel mag release to a thumb release. Makes reloading a lot faster. Makarov has always been one of my favorite handguns.

Hopefully crates and crates of good quality SKS,s will start coming available again. I miss when they were $75-$125 each. Wish I had bought more and also some AK, when they were $2-$350!!
