actually I only watch Netflix for entertainment purpose, 😅😅😅so this tv show is a golden opportunity to learn German while having fun. Thank you Anja 😃😃😃
What a great idea!!! Listening and watching in the context of a program or film really can be VERY helpful. Thanks for always coming up with new ways for people to learn and practice, Anja. Everyone learns so differently---some learn best by reading, or writing, or istening, speaking, or a mixture---and it's great to know that there are so many options.
When I was taking formal language classes for a couple of years, part of the homework was watching videos of a cast of characters from the textbook each chapter to see what they were up to in order learn different grammar concepts and learn about the culture. My college German instructor also used to give us a list of films to watch as part of our assignments for due for each semester. We were expected to watch the film with the subtitles off or if we had them on to use the German subtitles. We could choose the ones that interested us, view them, and then write a short paper on the film and describe the story/plot, talk about how we liked it, and anything we learned. I found it to be an invaluable and enjoyable tool! For me, it helped my listening skills, perceiving what was said when someone was speaking quickly, getting more attuned to listening in German, honing pronunciation skills by listening, and thinking about sentence construction during conversation. Even if I didn't pick up everything the first time, I was able to go back and rewind and review, or at least get the basic idea of a conversation and recognize familiar words and phrases. It was also wonderful for learning about history and culture and I got exposed to great films I might have not otherwise seen. I highly recommend it as an addition to whatever people might be doing currently.
"Hitler: A Career" on Netflix is very educational if you turn on German subtitles and watch it in English. I've learned many new German words by watching this show this way.

I completely agree with the difference between what's being said and what's written. When you're learning it's kind of destabilizing 😅
That is a problem I think no matter what languages, normally when the subtitles are auto generated.
We see what happens when we use voice to text on our phones, even in our native languages.
BUT, when learning another language and you notice something just isn;t right, it DOES mean you are learning.

I started watching Dark just for the show itself and decided to watch it subbed in English… the show reignited my desire to work on mein Deutsch wieder! Listening to the German dialog helps with learning to hear the words. And getting familiar with the idioms. But the dialog is often mumbled… I will check out your show!

Watching Dark on Netflix is what made me come to youtube to find more German speaking content and I found you! I took two years of Deutsch in college 30 years ago and used to be able to read and discuss Der Spiegel, but now just remember basic conversational stuff. I will seriously think about enrolling. It looks like great fun. I was expecting Prince aka The Artist Formerly Known as Prince with that first song. did not know there was a German band similar name.

Yeah watching Dark I noticed right away that the subtitles were tweaked in a way that embellished the meaning of what was said in German, so it helped, but also didn't lol. I personally feel watching German TV shows should be something one should do when they have a basic grasp of grammar fundamentals. As a new learner watching Dark, I felt confused and often overwhelemed and can't say I learned much. I later watched The Billion Dollar Code after learning more German and it was more manageable then.
I've actually been doing a The Umbrella Academy rewatch in German actually! glad to know I've been doing something good haha

What I used to do is to rewatch TV shows I liked a lot so it was easier to associate what was being told with what I could remember.

I’ve found that rewatching shows and movies I already know in the German dub has been ideal, next to specially made comprehensible input. If I know what’s happening already, I can watch it in German without subtitles and it basically becomes comprehensible input, especially for something like Big Lebowski or Seinfeld which I’ve seen in English multiple times. Also, watching kids shows like Hilda or Peppa Pig.

Personally I think it looks a bit like some of what's out there, but connecting the parts. Learning by tv would be more like lingopie. Their problem is the small amount of shows they have available.

I'm learning German because of my love of Austria and plan to return there in May 2024. What would be the differences with Austrian German beside the obvious cultural aspects like geography, etc.
Thank you for your efforts, I really wish I could have access to Netflix but unfortunately the international online payments here are temporarily frozen and we have no idea when this will end
I changed the default language to German for Netflix, Prime, Disney, etc. Some shows have very laconic characters so their speech is very A1 friendly (like Der Hexer). You have not lived until you have watched all the Star Wars franchise shows in German. Most characters speak very slowly, and they really make the evil empire characters come to life! I wonder if some of these shows are purposely made like this so they can be translated into Chinese (a large market) and more easily understood by their billions of customers of this material.
My favorite native German language show is Barbaren, which also features spoken Latin from the invading Romans, which is amazing to hear.

Ich bin ein Vater, ein Ehemann, ein Großvater, ich arbeite und ich trainiere, also wird das Erlernen von Sprachen mehr Zeit und Jonglieren in Anspruch nehmen als jemand, der alleinstehend ist oder/und keine Familie großziehen muss. Aber ich kann es!
Meine Muttersprache ist Französisch, ich spreche auch fließend Englisch und Amerikanisch (weil ich mehr als 12 Jahre in den Vereinigten Staaten und 22 Jahre im Vereinigten Königreich gelebt habe, meine ganze kleine Familie ist Engländerin). Ich verbessere mein B1-Niveau meines mexikanischen (und sogar ein wenig costaricanischen) Spanisch auf ein höheres Niveau. Mexikanisches Spanisch unterscheidet sich sehr vom Französischen, was die Aussprache und die Verben betrifft, sowie das mexikanische Vokabular (das ich liebe): aber ich habe vor, es zu lernen!
Englisch ist eine gute Sprache, aber nicht genug, um sofort kommerzielle/pädagogische/kulturelle/handwerkliche Türen zu Ländern zu öffnen, die Englisch nicht als erste oder zweite Amtssprache sprechen. Zusätzlich zu Großbritanniens Brexit und vielen extremistischen Trumpisten beginnen die Menschen auf der ganzen Welt, Englisch weniger zu verwenden und wechseln, wenn sie können, zu Französisch, Portugiesisch, Russisch, Spanisch usw. bereits seit 2021. Außerdem ist Englisch ziemlich eingeschränkt, bestimmte Emotionen oder Gefühle auszudrücken, sowie die Sprache der Debatten.
Zu guter Letzt lerne ich Deutsch wieder, um mich zu entspannen (Hebräisch lege ich vorerst beiseite), weil ich seine Geschichte, seine Theaterstücke, die germanischen Diasporas, die deutschen Kulturen / Österreicher / Schweizer usw. liebe. Ich studiere es seit Jahren, aber ich bin jetzt ernsthaft und ganzheitlich dabei, es auf ein fließendes Niveau zu bringen!
