Playing around with this and found a way to simplify the placement of the outer spikes. You can place sticks on flooring, so once you've got the base grid down, lay down planks and you can line the sticks along the edge without much headache. Once done, just remove the plank and reuse it for other spike wall edges.
So, I've made the ultimate lake base... I've never used the spikes at all though as I completely forgot you could do that. You have just taking my base from being 100% safe 75% of the seasons, to 100% safe for all season! In return, if you didn't know already, I found out that when you make a zipline to an interior base wall, then build walls around it, you will zipline into the building noclipping thru the walls. This works for logs too. It makes getting inside you base very easy and safe.
We built our base on stilts in seawater. There’s a small river that grows really wide and shallow where it flows into the sea. Because it is sea, it does not seem to freeze over in winter. Follow the stream just a bit further and it magically becomes potable fresh water. The best part: cannibals and mutants seem to REALLY dislike water, even shallow. They’ll just stand near the ‘lake’side, staring at us. With the spear it’s easy to just stay in the water, dart out, poke and retreat. It’s been working like a charm for quite a while now. The only ‘trouble’ we’ve had, were the babies. They do seem to launch themselves at the base. Not too bad, until someone decides to handle the situation with a grenade and blows up half the base..
i have found a spot that no enemies can get to its quite hidden and its surrounded by water still have to wait for winter to see if water freeze but otherwise its like a island but with a moantain behind it
Hmmm…. I just realized something else from what you did that is probably worth a try. As you placed the bottom spikes they clipped through the logs. That means you could probably get them to do that through the actual walls as well. Then you could ring your entire base with what I would call a ‘spike wall’. I am off to do some testing!
All you have to do is build a palisade fence and line the inside with sticks. If you put the sticks as close as you can up against the log wall and cut them into spikes they will clip through the fence but not be attachable as the base is on the inside of the wall. So as things try to hit the wall they die from the spikes, one layer will stop everything except the worm guys. After some testing, I've settled on a second layer of the same fence between five and eight meters apart, it's important that it be roughly the same distance as the worm guy can stretch normally. He can clip half his body through the first fence line with his lunge attack, but the second layer of spike fence at the right distance means one side of his body is hitting the outside spike wall and the other side is hitting the inner spike wall.
I was testing designs too an came up with about the same. I was trying to make worm proof structure. My biggest deal was not having Kelvin and Virgina die needlessly as sometimes I build things that just don't work out so well for them. My island base wasn't kosher and there was much pain in that. But I was safe. This is much better and now I can really fortify these three areas I like for my playthrough. There is a plateau near the end game area, and you only need to defend from one side. As it's just a strait drop everywhere else. There are berries and clean water source nearby.
making your base impenetrable is easy. 4 layer spike wall. space it so if they jump over the first layer they fall onto the second layer, and so on and so forth for the 3rd and 4th layer. it's been 50+ days and none of the creatures have ever made it past. the cannibals and the red fat guy die never get past the second layer
This game creeps me out with the mutations but, you always make a game look AMAZING! (I'm thinking about playing it... if I can just stop playing Undead Legacy, Lol 😄🤦♂️)
There is a better way to make the spike wall. You just make a ramp 1/4 log high, put 1 plank at the higher end and place your sticks on it. The game lets you put your stick freely on planks so you don't have to kinda glitch them into place. Once you are done with the spikes, remove the plank and ramp. Repeat this if you want to make the wall higher. Just make a steeper ramp each time. From what I have tested, you should put 5 spikes on every log. You can make your spike wall however tall you want but 2 layers it more than enough to deal with most situations. Sometimes, if you stand too close to the wall, a Skinny could jump at you and over the wall. Just take 2 steps back and they should jump head-first into the spikes, pretty funny. I like to keep the ramp, gives me a higher vantage point to shoot down from the wall. And btw, the hotdog mutant just gonna glitch through everything so watch out.
Ah I like this design. I have been playing around with something similar but that pathing you came up with seems to work quite well. I was trying more of a trap corridor honestly which is fun.
Nice. I will take this scheme into my playthrough ;) Wanna add that you can defend your defensive (kek) wall with same spikes. Place it from inward side of the perimeter and they will clip outside when pointing. In that way any cannibal or mutant (except maybe mutant babies cuz of their small size) will die almost instant when they try to break your defensive wall. And they are really attracted to it despite i have several structures and holders outside of the wall.
I built something like this, and it worked very well. I got very comfortable, so I wasn't expecting the mutant babies to come in the middle of the night and to have zero problem with the wall lol.
Protip: You can have ground planters by cutting a hole in your floor and as long as your base is a little bit up off the ground or in water, the standing planters will be on the ground instead.
Try it using a bridge as a wall, since they don't seem to target the mid section of a bridge, you only need to put spikes on each of the posts that holds the bridge up. Make it waist high and they can't path through it.
"The CatDog-Thing" Haha, so glad i'm not the only one who said that! XD And i TOTALLY have to remember this kind of barricade! I bet it surely looks nice when you build your wall directly behind it.
It's easier if you place the sticks first, and rocks first, then put the logs on top, although sometimes on uneven ground you have to place the logs to get the spot to pop a support before setting rocks.
Fantastic Tem, definitely using this on my playthrough. Im also looking at building something similar just behind my defensive wall to clip through at head height.
Sons of the Forest is really tempting to try it out, if only i had more time to play more games. What i really love in every series or any game that you play is the fact that you dedicate a lot of time for a proper base building and decorating. This is what i hate on some other content creators where they just don't put a lot of time into making a proper base design.
I made a house on a lake while it was frozen and put fortified spikes through the walls. Its working pretty good so far... when the lake froze again last night the mobs died before they could break my walls down.
So I just finished making this for my base and John 2.0 showed up for the first time. Literally just as I sharpened the last spike. He did get damaged by it think, but came straight through it.
I finally opened up my base to the front area where the baddies tend to come from afyer getting this set up. First thing to attack me is one of the leaping mounds of flesh with legs coming out of everywhere and it just jumps over the whole damn thing and kills me 😅 think I'll be in need of some traps beforehand aye
Actually did something similar only I made just a walkway about 5 spaces apart with spikes pointed inward with room for me to walk safely down the middle. The Cannibals all funnel inside the hallway cause its an open way to the inside of my base but they all run close to the walls for some reason and never safely down the middle and they all die before they get down the hall. I don't even use it as I go over a part of my wall I can literally jump over cause I have a hill I jump from on the outside and a balcony from my house on the inside. Also if you build a flyswatter trap, you can place floor over it and create a platform that you can walk over but enemies trip them through the floor.
This gives me an idea to place spikes from inside the wall and so AI may not be able to destroy spikes by hitting them with their weapon. Also in my version of the game, AI, especially the red fat mutants, like to ram from side of perimeter, while the human size ones like to rush the door.
The worm guys are glitched and just phase through walls like they aren't even there. They will take damage from spikes and cannot hurt you if you are on a second story or higher because they also phase through stairs. The fly swatter traps do loads of damage so I lay those in front of my spikes as well and they help kill the worm guys before they can phase through.
I really hope they add a way to heighten ur walls so slinky man(I'm using that now, thank you lol) can't just slink himself over the walls. I'm constantly getting invaded by them and they almost insta-kill kelvin every time.
Well the Defense is kinds nice for Players... BUT neither Kelvin, Virginia or even Enemies will enter even the "first" Segment of the Entrance of this :P They also do not even "try" Attack the structure and do not take damage at all from the Spikes BUT it's a nice Entrance as of Enemies can not find a Way (bugged and/or broken Pathfinding) into the Base with this :D
Very classical. The part of me that drew castles as a kid recognizes the part of you that drew castles as a kid. Also, could you lay down a foundation log, put reinforced spikes on it, then directly stack another log on it to place more reinforced spikes upon?

@@lodunost where is the best place to build?

You are like a build master. Learning so much from your playthrough. I will try these spikes and let you know how it goes. Thanks!
5:44 seeing Calvin duck down to avoid being poked made me smile x)
This is the absolute best, enjoy watching as much as when I played
Nice! This is great and extremely useful. I hope they simplify this and not remove this.

This is much better !! Thx i even don´t make a 1/4 log ramp. Just put a log down and make a ramp with it, then the spikes are not that high.
@@hege2427 yeah, you could do that too but if you built on uneven ground and wanted it to be more aesthetically pleasing then do the 1/4 ramp first.
Could you take a picture and post it please?
is there vide for this
Are there any videos on how to this?
Man you are cranking out the content! I'm glad I'm not the only one that calls it the "Catdog" monster >_
Yeah I just recorded the next playthrough episode and I thought this part in particular would make a decent standalone vid so I kept going 😛
Best Tip I heard so far. Tried with 100% succeed. Thank you so much for this Tip. ♥♥♥👍
Ah I like this design. I have been playing around with something similar but that pathing you came up with seems to work quite well. I was trying more of a trap corridor honestly which is fun.
In all my testing with this I've only had 1 cannibal make their way in so far, and the one John 2.0 too

Bro, this solution looks amazing and efficient. I am gonna definitely build up my own version. Thanks for the suggestion
No problem 👍
Very cool.. I got bored one day and made a wall off flyswatter traps. It's fun to sit back and see the cannibals get converted to ground beef.
These are sick looking too, adds alittle flavor to the lincoln log builing. I cant wait till they add more.
I built something like this, and it worked very well. I got very comfortable, so I wasn't expecting the mutant babies to come in the middle of the night and to have zero problem with the wall lol.
your base is super aesthetically pleasing!
Thanks!
Got the game because of this channel and im having a blast playing the game

Very cool, will be using this sweet entrance tomorrow!
Calling that one mutant “cat-dog” was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it for the first time and that will forever be it’s name to me
Try it using a bridge as a wall, since they don't seem to target the mid section of a bridge, you only need to put spikes on each of the posts that holds the bridge up.
Make it waist high and they can't path through it.
Super appreciate how organised you keep you videos was so easy for me to get back to this video
MY DREAM CAME TRUE THE SPIKES ARE ACTUALLY USEFUL NOW LETS HECKING GOOO
Best video ever on this topic! Great work!
Thanks for the great video. I loved your 7 days to die videos and I'm so happy you are making them now for sons of the forest.
Fyi for future viewers, this has been patched. You can still put sticks on logs, however not as easily so it's way more wonky.
"The CatDog-Thing" Haha, so glad i'm not the only one who said that! XD
And i TOTALLY have to remember this kind of barricade! I bet it surely looks nice when you build your wall directly behind it.
Spike wall is very effective. It shreds them.
It's easier if you place the sticks first, and rocks first, then put the logs on top, although sometimes on uneven ground you have to place the logs to get the spot to pop a support before setting rocks.
Dude amazing that works perfectly
Nice one! Gotta try that technique in my play-through
You should!
Great work Temreki.
Awesome defense. I'm still early game so I'm going to use this defense in my base. Thanks for the vid!

Mounting spikes like this needs to be added.
Great video GNS! Thanks for the tips!
Work perfect, nice concept it can masive help on sinlge play.
Best base defense I've see so far. i just have the spikes lined up around my defensive walls.
That probably works well too! I just like the look of spikes 😛
Love the guy who jumped at the spikes and lost his noggin. Went out with style.
Nice guide! Thanks will implement this into my base design
wow this is brilliant
This coming in clutch
Great idea and thanks never thought of that 👍
Glad to help
W00t! We love us, some night time GNS! 😁
Well really enjoyed that and will have to give it a try, thanks!
Have fun!
That looks really great! I will definitely give it a try!
Hope you enjoy!
Well done, love this idea
Really lovely design!
Fantastic Tem, definitely using this on my playthrough. Im also looking at building something similar just behind my defensive wall to clip through at head height.
Loved your catdog reference to Mr slinky, well its catdog from hell. 😅
Right?!
Thanks for this.
Lol. Thats exactly the same spot I am and exactly where I'm doing my base with the same range. Cool.
Well, this is absolutely awesome, now i don't have to die several times trying to fend off their skirmish or rely on virginia to gun them down.

4:40 so far with my experience with building in the game that applies to trying to do most things and its so frustrating lol.

great job dude. ty for the tutorial well done.

Nice design
Great i learnt a lot
Came for the synthwave, stayed for the build.
nice defence bro ! i might do something simular
Left a like for your Jared Diamond reference!
Haha not very many people catch that 😉
Create a hallway of sorts with your wall. Kelvin and Virginia will walk thru. Cannis stop half way and resort to trying to beat it down
Super helpful
So I just finished making this for my base and John 2.0 showed up for the first time.
Literally just as I sharpened the last spike.

You can build shelves without using any logs, so make a fence of those and put spikes through them instead.

Waiting for the next update before deciding whether this is worth doing lol
There is a door for the defence walls, just add a 1 timer to the all and it creates a door
holy sht, this is a great find / exploit. im gonna build this on my highland vacation house near the snowy area lol
I really hope they add a way to heighten ur walls so slinky man(I'm using that now, thank you lol) can't just slink himself over the walls. I'm constantly getting invaded by them and they almost insta-kill kelvin every time.
