Around the 17 minute mark where he speeds up his kicks while slowing down the snare rolls and then reverses slowing down the kick while speeding up the snare it just insane. He has ten brains. The entire performance is crazy good. Thomas is beyond bad ass. Phenom!
@@robertkay9349 I can imagine. Mine was watching it on UA-cam. I’ve seen other performances of his where he has all four limbs going and plays different rhythms. He’s such a talent. I even enjoyed his Dream Theater audition. I think he would have been a more tasteful drummer than Mangini. Mike is technically amazing. But I’m more about hearing parts that work in the music. He tends to over play. Where Portnoy, I feel, was more musical. I think the same would be said for Lang.
@@oneanddone7992 Very true when he played with Chris Turner he thought that arrangement was very easy and that was like wow he says next time he'll have Chris follow his arrangement
This might be the most impressive drum solo I've seen in the last 10 years. Full utilization of the kit, comprehensive flows, call back to previous sections to transition between groves, non stop energy. Thomas Lang stays impressive, god damn it feels good to be a drummer.
I don‘t think Thomas would want you to burn your sticks. He would want you to keep going. If he had given up after watching Buddy or Tony, there would be no Thomas Lang today.
Just because someone is on a higher technical level doesn't mean for you to quit. Whatever level you're at, do the best you can and be yourself creatively. Don't worry about what others do, worry about what you do.
I wonder how you can ever achieve such an alien level as Thomas has achieved. You'd think it would take a thousand years of practice to get to this level. I really think Thomas is a genius. Seriously. The Albert Einstein of drums. There was nobody before him who could play like this, and there will never be anybody who can play like this ever again, so we are witnessing a force of nature here. A one of a kind miracle. Truly amazing.
Unbelievable the world's renowned Thomas Lang is this generations master class The Best Drummer ever. The bouncing of wooden sticks across stretched plastic skins on hollowed wood and acrylic cylinders and the banging out notes on hammered brass round sheets and the many foot pedals for assorted world percussion instruments and his ambidextrous limbs flying around from watching from above mind blowing again unbelievable the soul he speaks through his limbs and his heart he has been and continues to be bless and for us, an audio visual experience! 😊
Well this young man has done time signatures, patterns, independence, power, flash, back sticking, you name it... that defies the imagination. Amazing talent...
Thomas Lang is the most well-rounded drummer of all modern drummers. His independence is amazing. He has speed, he is dynamic, his foot control is unmatched. There are tons of great drummers which I love........ Dave Weckl, Gavin Harrison, Benny Greb, Todd Sucherman, Steve Smith, Mike Portnoy, Mike Mangini, Dennis Chambers, Ray Luzier, Chris Coleman, Virgil Donatia and Aquiles Priester to name jus a few! Rock on!
Thomas Lang and Yoni Madar are the guys of drumming these days! Soloing a lot of drummer do....but I often miss musicality in the approach to do a solo on the drums. But these two guys? Amazing!
The blows and pounding of the drum sticks from Thomas are very special, the coordination of both hands and feet as well as his technique makes it impossible for me to stop watching him play the drums. 🔥🔥🔥
Thomas, herzliche Grüße aus Deutschland. Dies ist das absolut allerbeste Drum Solo ever. Ab 17. Minute wird es nur noch unfassbar. Welche Unabhängigkeit . Bin sprachlos!
I've been a fan of his for a long time. I've drifted over to watching some other players so I had somewhat forgotten what an absolute beast Thomas truly is. His 4 way independence is ungodly. Met him at a NAMM show in 06 and he was the nicest guy. What a legend.
I love Lang and this solo and don’t mean to hard define a drum solo, but he has a very soundcheck-ish approach to soloing that he plays off well in a legendary way. Love this work!
Amazing! from the set-up (foot cowbell) to use of doubles and diddles to finally a good single camera filming of drum solo. And the limb independence!!! I don't know if I'm encouraged to apply myself harder to practice or disheartened in the knowledge I'll never play this.
Bozzio was one of first guys, (at least in my time) to build solos up top over complex ostinatos established with his feet. We all know they are close friends and I wonder if that has influenced TL's approach in the past few years. He certainly has taken it to a whole new level. Amazing work.
There's a UA-cam video, I'm not sure if it's from DW drums, where Thomas, Terry, and another drummer who's name escapes me, are asking questions and talking with Terry about his drumming, and Thomas mentions this to Terry and asks him how he came about coming up with that. It's pretty interesting, and fun to watch..
I have never seen/heard anything like that 🤯absolutely astonishing. Master is not enough. This is a drum thrown in the TWILIGHT ZONE. Stratospheric and beyond Thomas Lang.
I think he would have left by now. I doubt if it would have been creatively satisfying for him on the long run. Same for Marco. I think Mike was their guy, more in his court after Vai.
I agree. I think Thomas would have been more musical. I think Mangini’s playing is more sterile. Meaning, technically impressive but boring in musicality.
Not being too strict but it's obvious in the drummer-auditioning documentary that Thomas Lang was kinda struggling with the odd time signature in the riff phase of DT audition. And his interpretation toward the songs (which are already written and performed for years) are somehow unnessesary to the band. So... It's reasonable for them to choose Mangini.
thomas iis hyper tecnical, in a level that he wants all the time use all his pedals and effects cymbals, it a bit anoying soometimes, specially in songwritting. Listten to his albuns and songs from Spark and so on, they are too busy. He wants to push boundaries on being busy while playing, he is doing fine without DT. Mangini is a beast on stage with them.
To me this wasn't a "right vs wrong" but instead a "fit" issue. At the end of the day, I think any of the ppl who auditioned would have done fine technically.. It came down to personality. I think all parties did just fine with their choices
Can't count how many times my brain was twisted and turned inside out. Lang is THE very best drummer of all time. There is not such a thing he cannot play.
Completely INSANE solo. His drums sound so cool too. I love the way those toms just SLAM when he hits them. The snare is like a 32oz steak PHAT! Thuddy whaps!
The GREAT Thomas Lang!🤘🏽😎 if you play this video at 2x the speed WOW! The flow is crazy sounding! When Thomas does the cow bell licks, sound like an T model running.😂 fastest snare roll EVER!!! Thank you, thank you thank you…
100% of the audio on this video is from one microphone only. A small Rode microphone attached to a GoPro Hero 7. That's all. His DW kit had a array of Audix mics, which are awesome. Really made a difference when listening from the audience.

Es increible el cambio radical que tiene de tocar, lo que era antes a este video que es la actualidad. Un cambio bastante muy importante, que merece reconocimiento. Definitvamente Thomas Lang a mejorado increiblemente mucho!
Brain melting! Ah, the drum dot on the ride! Just his pedals alone cost more than my entire set up! :) Nice new setup, though. Such a creative approach, that independence is insane, and so dang precise! Both he and Gavin have such a strong, precise stroke with those tree trunk sticks. I finally was able to try out both of their sticks, and both were enormous compared to what I was used to. Anyone had the chance to check Gavin's stick out? it's a really unique feel (it doesn't "feel" right in the hand [to me], but it's exact and precise, and running through sticking patterns is really satisfying. Does that make sense?
So many greats...technicians. Weckl, Peart, Gadd, Sucherman, the list goes on and on. And then there is Bonham. Crushing your soul on When the Levee Breaks. IMHO the G.O.A.T.
