Thomas Lang Learns "Lux Æterna" As Fast As Possible

- Drumeo loves daring drummers to learn songs on the spot - especially if it's in a style they don't normally play. International clinician Thomas Lang is one of the only pros we've challenged who really isn't confined to one or two genres: he plays everything from fusion to metal.
We asked him to learn "Lux Æterna" from Metallica's 2023 album 72 Seasons. As fast as possible.
(He'd never heard the song before, but we did let him listen to the original drum part to see if he could quickly replicate it!)

@@sammoussa8 I agree! I love it when professional drummers do stuff like this. It brings back memories to me in a classic rock band. The band says learn this and I put on the headphones and listen over and over then I'm ready to play in 20 minutes.
Awesome content! Is there a notation course on drumeo to create effective drum sheets like this?
Drumeo Can we see Thomas learn a jazz tune the way that Larnell learned a metal tune? Thanks
So, so, so much better when you give the drummer the song without the drum track to see what they come up with before hearing the actual drums for the first time!
Can we have just Thomas Lang narrate the drums with his "verbal drumming". Thats entertaining by itself 😂
if you can sing it you can play it
@@t3hgir facts
My teachers always told me to sing my parts, didn't matter if it was classical percussion or metal drumming. Sing it, and you can (most likely) play it. Specially if, along with singing, you practice your vocabulary behind the kit.

In case anyone forgot, this guy auditioned for Dream Theater. This is the equivalent of making Gordon Ramsay learn how to make a sandwich.
A peanut butter, banana, bacon, and mayonnaise sandwich
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK perfect
If DT was a sandwich only guys would eat it and their partners would be waiting outside pretending they get the 17/8 time signatures.
The point is about the process of learning a song quickly for a session, not whether or not Thomas lang can play a Metallica song.
fun fact Gordon Ramsay is best known for making hamburgers... ie sandwiches
Love how he adds his own flare without taking away from the song. True pro shit. Everyone knows how good Thomas is, but he wasn't showing off. Just serving the song.

Thomas Lang is just built different. Absolutely love his energy and passion. This man knows how to have fun.
Man nailed his Dream Theater audition. Not surprised to see him kill this too. What a powerhouse.
Wouldn’t exactly say he nailed it, he nailed DT’s actual songs, but he failed in one sector. They gave him an unknown prog riff, and he had to come up with his own drum part as fast as possible, now thats where his young arrogance got the best of him and thats also how Dream Theater did not select him. He’s definitely more mature, still an absolute unit of a drummer. He was arrogant and usually showed off at a young age, but now he really professionally display’s the level he truly is on without ruining the song, but rather by serving it
@@arqz4821 He did nail that audition. The video of the audition that Dream Theater chose to show was edited in a way so that Mike would appear to be the superior drummer. But all of the other drummers were technical equals. Knowing Thomas work, that he would have trouble with DT stuff is impossible. It's just that they showed clips where he would come off as having problems. I'm pretty sure you could edit that video in a way so that Mike would seem like a total noob.
You really think an anime fan will understand that anyone can manipulate a video they believe in anything if there's a video for it@@lingonberriesofwrath1836
@@lingonberriesofwrath1836 fair enough. I'm not implying that he can't do DT stuff. Just saying that he was young and arrogant at that DT audition, He has since learned better now. I still agree that he's an absolutely great drummer. Just that he wasn't as experienced back then.
@arqz4821 Man that Dream Theater thing was really fake. Marco Minnemann explained a couple years later how this really went. He was invited for the show despite stating to them that he has no intention of joining and only knows 3 Dream Theater Songs while not even having a single record (CD) of them . They said that it doesnt matter and he should come anyways. It was never a competition and they werent searching for a drummer... they knew they wanted Mike Mangini and then just invited some exceptional good drummers for having a fun show.
As dream theatre said, Thomas is just a powerhouse! His energy and optimism is just going through the roof! I can watch this all day.
He hits VERY hard for a virtuoso type. He leans in and hits hard. Some of these guys are overly obsessed with dynamics when all out balls is sometimes more appropriate. I love his attitude and ability to just ROCK!
As much as I love for Dirk to do the European leg of the tour because of Lars not being available, I hate the fact we didn't get Thomas to fill in this summer 😢
Another amazing drummer that hits hard is Matt Halpern. Thomas is an awesome metal drummer too
@@indyjones7841 And he was called powerhorse, not powerhouse.😊
And then they took Mangini, that honestly could learn a thing of two from Lang in terms of expression and feeling while hitting hard.
I love the respect Thomas has for Lars' take as he's processing the song.
With that said, Lang crushed this.

Two takeaways - 1: just noticed the Vic Firth snare stick bag, how cool is that? I’ve been a drummer for 40+ years, I was looking at the bass drum camera view and realized 2: Thomas’s mallet placement, they were choked a bit. I thought, wait are the center of my mallets in the center of the head? No. They were higher. I always had my mallet’s too high (yes I play double bass). What an increase in speed. Thanks Drumeo cast and crew for all you do.
No kidding! I don't care for the original, but the drums sound sublime here.
Lang is widely recognized as one of the drumming greats. It’s no surprise he did so well.
I read that as "Lars is widely recognized.." and was very confused.
Omg same. Saw “Lars” first. How much did Lars and company pay this studio to kiss his ass? “Lars is back!” 🤮🤮🤮🤮

That fact that he's adding in paradiddles to the snare rolls to make it more interesting on the first try, while being funny and chill as ever, is just inspiring! What a guy 🙌
Rim click accents too.
Elevated it way beyond the original just on the first go
I think there's a second reason - getting a bit more windup on the crash cymbal hit. I know I've thrown in an unneeded paradiddle or whatever just to give myself one more eighth note to wind up for a big crash.
Lang is a madman on drums at 55 years old! Exactly who I strive to be like when I reach that age

Thom is another level ….. god I do miss drumming 😅
You can never underestimate the importance of a lead sheet - I once got booked for a recording where the artist sent me some rough demos without drums. I wrote out the lead sheets and got some ideas for parts to play for the rehearsal the next day. Turned up to the studio and found out that there'd been a miscommunication - it wasn't a rehearsal, it was the recording! I had to make up my parts on the spot based on a few listens, and without those lead sheets we would have been there for days. Always be prepared!
Great advice!

And that’s why he teaches at Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Him and Larnell are next level understanding of drums and music. More content like this please. Ask Dennis to deconstruct his drum solo on CAB.
My favorite tweak he did was so minor, but really gave his take momentum. At 9:23 he does straight 8ths with kick/snare for a bar and half before beginning the 16th notes. Whereas Lars used 16th across it all. It's so small, but I heard it immediately and felt it gave it that final anticipation. Amazing drummer (and a quick study, wow).
Incredible how quickly he learned the song. I just love the facial expressions while playing the song.
One of my absolute favorite drummers for a long time! I wish you guys would show the cheat sheets they make up close. I would love to see that.
If Lars would see this video! It would put a huge smile on his face. Getting a compliment is always nice. But for a drummer getting this compliment from Thomas Lang is something else. So awesome!
If Lars saw this video he'd probably click off immediately cuz the comments are all making fun of him
@@sirdrum-a-lotYou think Lars would care that much? The guy is in a band who sold millions of records, earned millions of dollars, travelled all around the globe. And he definitly could practise more his drumming or maybe get some lessons from Thomas. 😅
Also Lars is still a pivotal part of the band and a leader of the band.
Plus I think if Lars really was at all insecure, he would try to get better LOL but he clearly doesn't. He just tries to maintain what he does
@@HugoStiglitz88 why you guys always do this to lars ? Talking like he is not a good drummer ?? Well he is a great drummer.

@@Zort2257 did I say he wasn't a good drummer? I just said he has room for improvement but instead tries to maintain what he does. I almost added that he's getting older so maintaining is what makes the most sense but I didn't
Eitherway, saying he has room for improvement is not an insult in anyway. WE ALL have room for improvement. Even the best drummers in the world will tell you they can get better.
To a certain extent I agree that the whole meme that Lars is bad is ridiculous. Is he the best drummer in metal? No. But he's been doing his job well for decades and he's in his 60s or 70s. Playing metal isn't even easy for teenagers unless they practice a lot let alone dudes Lars age
