I lived there from '69 - 73 and it's unrecognizable. They've even built houses on the old Treloars Hospital down Chawton Park Rd. where I spent many a Saturday afternoon chatting up the nurses in the coffee bar there.
You wouldn't. I've lived there its absolutely full of drug addicts down every alleyway dealing. Because there is quite literally no hospital or police station it felt they openly threatened violence. It happened as quickly as meeting neighbours then you know dealers are a problem in the town and they recognise. Problem for those that live in Alton like me when I lived in poppy house all roads lead to lipscombe rise eventually..you will be noticed to not be a local for example quite fast. I moved out because I knew my bikes were clocked and there were failed attempts to steal them. Thankfully I never kept them in my shed. I lived in one of the worst shared housing associations I've ever seen I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. Shame really because I used to like alton and I used to busk in the town centre before I moved there you'd have no idea that crime is everywhere almost the minute you wander off the main streets down residential ones because it's a network of alleyways and law enforcement is non existent almost just brought in from aldershot and guildford
Interesting! Last time I was through Alton there was two-way traffic and Courage's was up Turk Street. Apart from the town library, all I recognised was Howitt's.
+Spitalhatch Wow, must've been a long time ago. The library has been like that for about 10 years.In fact the flat next to it are where the library USED to be. Still, it's a nice little town and I like living here
+TheOrgano It WAS a while - about 53 years! In those days, Alton was described as having two breweries, five banks and 33 pubs - although that might have been an exaggeration!

And drug dealers..sadly quite violent vermin. One man was killed over a ten bag or something a few years back. It got on the news. I moved out within a year and a half I felt in danger as my neighbours smoked cannabis and the man dealing had absolutely no respect let alone a fuse he could literally just lash out at anyone because he grew plants in his home I didn't want to live next door of that knowing my expensive bikes were always at risk inside or outside the house too many people up my rode recognised me asked me how much they're worth the minute they saw me I knew I had to live privately store them securely in secret in my room..the shed had been broken into a few times to attempt to take them

we had visited about 1 week in May of 2019. There is a sweet old town and we loved it.
I'd love to visit someday.
