Simple DIY Boat Trailer Build part 2 of 3

  • This is how I built an inexpensive boat trailer. I used 30 feet of "C" channel and 10 feet of square tubing. All of it was 1/8 inch thick walls. So not too heavy but more than adequate for a small aluminum boat. I used about 4 feet of 2 1/2" angle iron, about 18 inches of 3" flat bar, and 2 feet of 1 inch flat bar. I reused an axel and fender from a junky old trailer I've had for years. I bought new tires and rims and painted everything to match with paint from Tractor Supply. I made bunks out of 2X6 Douglas Fir and covered them with cheap carpet from Home Depot using contact cement and staples. I bought the rollers and bow support rubbers on Amazon. This is part two of three parts.

Appreciated the effort to document your effort, however found the soundtrack was obnoxious and unnecessary. Wish you would have taken the time to point out the important details in real time, like how to make sure the axle is perpendicular to the hitch.
Also, how did you calculate the location of the axle, front to back, so that the weight is evenly distributed and the tongue weight is within an acceptable range?

I used the same bent nail shown in the first video (21:45), centered on the forward end of the tongue, hooked my tape measure on it and made sure the spring hanger was the same distance on each side. Since I used that center point on the tongue to run a string line to the rear and made sure the tongue and frame were centered to each other I knew the axle would be 90 degrees. In video 3 I explained that while the trailer pulled fine I felt I needed to move the axle back about a foot. My suggestion is to look at other trailers of similar size to what you want to build and put your axel the same distance from the rear of the boat. Sorry you didn’t like the music. I made it myself with Garage Band. Hope this helps and thanks for your comment.

@@hartshut Thank you for the clarifications. I thought there may be some "simple", "rule-of-thumb" calculations to determine center of weight, axle placement, trailer capacity and so on. Also, wished you would have included cost of materials and perhaps where you acquired the steel.
What passes for "music" is often a very subjective topic and everyone has their opinions of course. Personally, it seems most of the YT videos with soundtracks, would be of much better quality without them. I look for sound (no pun intended) information and quality of delivery, not background noises.

As I’m watching this the first thing I thought right away was the front axle leaf hanger was way too far forward. There should he a 60/40%split where the axle should be making the trailer tongue heavy to pull right.
