    Follow up: the car had the wrong glow plug module for the recall and the wrong glow plugs due to that missed recall - starts like a dream now - it was starting with almost no glow plugs in this video

      Thank god you didn't have selled it. It surely is a very good reliable car and has a lot of life left in it, even at very cold temps. It's not because its a diesel, it's the stupid mechanics that mess everything up or the owner that treat their cars not right. In your case, it was the mechanic. And see, a "little" mistake at the recall could have been a costly price for you, looking for an another car. Don't trust every mechanic, they don't know everything and make mistakes too, even if they can't admit it.
      Best regards from germany, sorry for my kinda bad english.

  • @assistantto007

    the smoke is from the accumalation of fuel in the cylinders and exhaust, the engine sounds like a bag of spanners on start up because the cylinders are contaminated. too much of that and you could easily hydraulically lock the engine. you need to optimise the power supply to and from the starter motor. check all connections, remove and clean contact areas if necessary. maybe the starter motor has seen better days.have the battery tested. just because a battery is relatively recent - it doesnt mean its healthy.

    if you check your temperature on this vid4eo , from the beggining , coolant temp is allready up , that would affect cold start map in the ecu , you have probably a defective coolant temperature sensor , and its why it hard to start , theses BEW can start at -30 without trouble normally

    • @MrSpookylukey

      Depends more on the engine. It's not a one size fits all type approach. I've got a 200tdi Land Rover. You can replace the fuel filter which holds about 500ml and it'll start straight up and it won't cough or die because of the lack of fuel. And it doesn't even need glowplugs at anything above -8 because I haven't even connected them. This engine also has over 200,000 miles.
      Direct injection Diesel engines which most are now are far superior to petrols for cold starting. There will always be exceptions. Note the engine mileage on this Tdi also.

  • @2233golf2
    @2233golf2 7 років тому

    There is a general rule of thumb....that says A true cold start-for a diesel - cost you about 6-9 miles of life expectancy.....and listening to this poor engine ....I would say that this kind of treatment costs you way more than just a couple of miles .....it hurts to listen to this...
    I rather get out of bed an hour earlier and preheat her - or pospone my appointment.....

  • @smashingstuff09

    As much as I dislike VW that milage impresses me, If that is the original engine.

    • @atraxr603
      @atraxr603 7 років тому +5

      Why would that impress you? Pretty much every car goes beyond that with original engine. I even have an old Nissan Almera diesel 2.2 it has over 350000km and it can probably do another 300000 easy with that same engine. Every BMW e46 you see here has well over 300000km, all with original engines. It's hardly unusual for cars that are 10-15 years old. Actually it's common as it can be.

    • @smashingstuff09
      @smashingstuff09 7 років тому +5

      Atrax R Well its because I live in an area where they use alot of road salt, 80% of our cars only reach around 250.000kms before the body starts rusting.

    • @atraxr603
      @atraxr603 7 років тому

      smashingstuff09 I get that part, but engine would still be good. They use lots of salt here as well btw. Body does rot, but engines are still good. Well it depends on how you take care of your car as far as body goes. If you pressure wash it here and there it's not that big of a deal. If you leave it for the entire winter it becomes a problem real quick.
      So yea, I agree with that part. Still, engines go further than 300000km easy for the most part if you do basic maintenance, if you don't neglect it. :)
      My old Almera is rotten tho, but that's the achilles heel of these Almeras, so it's not that big of a surprise. lol Engine still runs like nothing tho. I bet it could go another 300000km if the body would let it, but it doesn't. haha

    • @TheDox451
      @TheDox451 8 років тому

      That would work on old carburetted diesels, but you would destroy modern diesel. Petrol doesnt lubricate as well as diesel does and is too violent for diesel engine.

    • @broadwayline
      @broadwayline  7 років тому +14

      it is still cheaper than gas due to the longer distance per tank - i get 1100-1200km for 58 dollars of diesel vs 500km for 60 dollars of gas in my golf R

    • @blackcarmafia
      @blackcarmafia 7 років тому

      15 year old diesel does 1000km with a tank, 5L/100KM consumption, 300g co2/100km
      EURO6 does 1000km with one fuel tank, 5l/100km, 105g co2/100km
      Oh, and then petrol engine, lets say u drive 180 km/h Autobahn, petrol consumes 5-6 l/km more than similar diesel at that speed :)
      Sure, burning 20 L of petrol is more ECO than 10l of diesel
      Oh and if u do it in 1.0 TSI, burning 1000l of petrol only emmits 800g CO2, if u do it in old car it will emmit 5x as much :)

    • @fabianrudzewski9027
      @fabianrudzewski9027 7 років тому +22

      Nikola Malic No, it actually doesn't. If you only take co2 into account, then petrol is bad. But if you count NOx and fine dust, the diesel is worse. Modern techniques can only partially solve this, since downsizing mostly increases NOx emissions and better injection makes dust finer, so the DPF has a harder time catching it. Plus to decrease those two emissions, you mostly sacrifice fuel efficiency thus again producing more CO2

    in all seriousness. if you dont want to fix the harness, just get a cheap 100A relay and a cheap puch button to manually power the plugs. takes like 15 mins to wire in and you can coldstart the shit out of it. it'll always start. did the same to a old Golf iv and also wired the electric heater the same way. get heating just 1min after starting the engine now. but remember to shut it all off again :PP

    I wonder if there's some air being introduced by a 'leak' in the supply (e.g a perforated membrane) preventing diesel being sucked from the tank as it should?

    try a thermos flask full of hot water pour it over the fuel filter ? you glow plugs may work but the diesel in the filter is jelly

    • @TheDox451
      @TheDox451 8 років тому

      Wont help, fuel filter is just a small part of fuel system. What about fuel tank, pump, lines, manifold, injectors etc. You have winter diesel which is made to remain liquid in cold temperatures.

    • @bobsmart2110
      @bobsmart2110 8 років тому +1

    • @TheDox451

      You dont even have to charge it, just keep it in warm place. Cold temperatures lower battery power and drain it out.

    I suspect that the glow plugs not working and / or water is frozen in the fuel filter.
    In the worst case, the motor does not have sufficient compression.

  • @krugerblue

    There is really no point in lighting up the plugs multiple times. A plug will reach its temperature in a couple of seconds max.

    • @OrlyVlog
      @OrlyVlog 8 років тому +1

      +krugerblue but it will heat the cylinder more when you light it up multiple times :)

    • @krugerblue

      krugerblue Yeah thats true but glow plugs are not that expensive.

    • @krugerblue
      @krugerblue 8 років тому

      Indeed you are right again. One thing to mention though (but this is understood by default if you live in a cold climate) is that you need a good battery. When turning on the glow plugs multiple times it really sucks a lot of juice form the battery, and I have seen cars (including mine) that would start no problem, but after 2 or 3 cycles of plugs they would crank much slower.

    • @HAPKAH
      @HAPKAH 8 років тому

      +OrlyVlog you could install a sort of oversized blowdrier they have on trucks and busses, it does the job better.

  • @matsedererklar-bar8658
    @matsedererklar-bar8658 8 років тому

    You do this completely wrong. It would have startet with the first attempt if done right.
    You have to support the engine with the starter the whole starting process until it cranks stable itself. Not starting it 2 seconds and then release the starter. Hold it down to support the engine, it's ok to to so for 30 or 40 seconds if needed.
    If the engine speed has rised up to 450 or 500 1/min after a few seconds, the engine wouldn't block the starter so much as in the first two seconds so it is no problem for starter and battery to do so.
    Then you would succeed with the first attempt even at -40°C ...
