8:10 proves with good maintenance an engine will start at any temperature. Sadly it had a weak battery, but it still started first try so that furthermore proves why you need good glow plugs. :)
i HAVE A 2013 Golf TDI and it starts right up and without any hesitation even by -35 Celsius....Here in Canada, winters are tough and you need a car in perfect mechanical condition: good engine, good glow plugs and good battery! My TDI has now 8 years, 206 k km and sill drives like a champ!
I have a well maintained Mercedes B-class 2005, 2.0L diesel. Always top quality oil, fuel filters, fuel.. It has 340k kilometers, engine overhauled at 240k. This year I replaced the starter and battery. It starts in one crank rotation. No misfires, no weird shit and sounds.. just clean start. Every single time. I've seen car much older start with zero issues when properly maintained. As long as the fuel isn't gelled, you should be able to start no problem. These cars that need 2 starters to get going.. They're poorly maintained, need engine overhauls and so on..
I only ever have had to start my modern TDI in about +30f (-1c) but it cranked right over even when I forgot to use the glow plugs (I usually drive gas cars). I have no question about its ability to start easily in -10 or -20 degree weather.

That lever is connected to the injection pump, via a cable, and when it’s pulled, it advances the injection pump timing, effectively changing when the fuel is delivered. I hope that helps. @@insideridin1376 no it is the 2.0tdi Biturbo in the t5. The biggest problem of this Engine is the oxidizing AGR cooler. It sends sand like particles in the engine. Last time i checked 1 out of 10 had a known to vw had an engine failure. Happens from 80- 140000km.

According to vw 1out of 10 cfca sold before the revision had an engine failure, and that are only the cases known to vw... The two big problems of this engine seem to be AGR cooler and oil temps...

Weak batteries in a lot of these vehicles and you don't stop starting for at least 20-30 secs. or else you loose the heat in the cylinder. This guy 6:49 it's a new TDI with fast heating plugs is an idiot.
yeah the engine will start but I still can't drive because the tdi won't produce any heat to defrost the windshield... Jokes aside, love my golf, but the defrost function is crap.

he did a proper cold start, heated once more than enough if glow plugs are working properly. cicling glow plugs more than 1 time is killing them acctualy

It was only like 5 seconds. But either way, continuing to wait after the glow plug lights turn off is normal when it’s really cold. They still run even when the lights off for awhile.

It’s not a choke, it’s a cold start lever. It advances the timing to help starting in cold temps. 03:38

I have a polo 86c 1.3 Diesel, and at -15 I start on the second try . Volkswagen can do a good diesel engine.

In the Dolomites with the 2.0 TDI diesel at -25 was not a problem, you just need a good quality battery and Arctic diesel.
I have audi a6 c6 3.0 tdi (asb), and at -25 i start from first try. VAG Group do good diesels.
