Showing you around STAVANGER. Norway's fourth-largest city

- In this video I take you on a stroll through the city where I was born, Stavanger. It's Norways fourth biggest city - but still very small on a global scale. I show you my favorite cozy places in the center of Stavanger, which I admittedly discovered as a teenager and still go to as an adult 🙈. We also head a little bit off the beaten path, and in the end I take you to my favorite spot outside of the city.
If you are visiting this part of Norway and have some time there I highly recommend also going to Bergen. Watch my video on Bergen to get a sense of that city: • A locals guide to BERG...

I enjoy your videos very much. My grandpa Jacobson was born and raised in Norway with all his family. At 21 he came to the United States and then eventually brought back some of his brother and sister. It was always my dream to visit Norway but at 81 and in a wheelchair when I leave my home I guess I won't make it now so I will enjoy all you have to offer. Blessings and love from New Mexico
How cool that he was from here. I am so glad you enjoyed it and that it can give a little glimpse into Norway for you
I loved watching this! I grew up not really knowing anything about my father and finally discovered this past week that he and his family are from Stavanger. Learning about this city and culture has been very healing for me thus far. I'm hoping to visit sometime in the future to really help me put these pieces together.
Amazing place. ❤
I went to Bergen and Tromso this year and I‘m really fascinated by Norway!
Greetings from Frankfurt/ Germany.
I stumbled upon your channel because of this video. I am from Minnesota in the US and coming to Stavanger in late June to visit friends. I’ve since watched many other videos and they are very relaxing and a great break from a busy life. Thank you for all you do. I will revisit this video as I prepare for my trip. Thank you!
Thank you for showing us this fine places!
Thank you for another beautiful video. You help heal the world.
Beautiful and inspiring video...thanks for sharing!
The beach was beautiful and calming. Wish I was there. Thank-you for sharing the sights and sounds of this city.
Thank you for this beautiful tour and ending at the beach was perfect ❤
You’re welcome 😊 glad you liked it
Loved the colorful street and, of course, the beach. Thanks for showing us your birthplace.
What an interesting city, with independent businesses full of personality and then the stunning beach and sea. Throwing light on the world from so many different angles. X
thank you for showing us this marvelous city. I'm going to visit it sometime this December.
Thank you for the video! I really like Stavanger♡ My heart longs to be there and I really hope to visit it some time! It means a lot to me for a special reason:D
Thank you Maria, such a beautiful video. I love Norway so much. Every corner is so beautiful. I live in Sørreisa for half year. I will definitely come back to visit. Thank you for sharing your journey. From California.
Such a colourful, positive and creative video that now makes me want to visit Stavanger! I have no idea why you don't have 300K+ subscribers yet as your content is always stunning!! Thanks a lot from Toulouse, France :)
I absolutely love Norway. Last year I felt a pull to go to Bergen and I went there by myself for a week last summer. It was absolutely beautiful. Fresh air, clean water, friendly people, amazing nature. I totally felt like I came home. My next visit will be to Stavanger area. Now I'm thinking of learning Norwegian language. 😊 Thank you for another lovely video. 🤗
I love that you just went when you felt the pull! So glad you enjoyed it, and I hope your Stavanger visit will be good too 😊
Thank you.💖@@Mariaandtheforest
Enjoyed your tour of Stavanger. It brought back good memories when I was there several years ago. Took many of the walks you did and found my best Norwegian souveniers at a charity shop there. One of my grandparents was from there.
Beautifull video, It feels you pay attention to all the details and love to do It. A peacefull moment watching It. Thank you!
Greetings from Argentina
Thank you ♡♡
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful city and straying from tourist sites to things everyday people will enjoy. The beach was so calming and lovely. You have a true art for sharing nature in her glory.
Thank you
Just beautiful❣️ We loved our time in 🇳🇴 Norway❣️ You two are so sweet❣️
Love this! Thank you so much!
Beautiful Norway ❤. Thank you Maria for your enjoyable and calm videos.
Thank you for watching
Merci pour cette vidéo, cela me donne juste envie, de retourner en Norvège, j'ai en autre aimé Bergen, son ambiance, alors j'attends votre vidéo avec impatience
Thank you so much for showing us around. ❤ a real treat to get a glimpse of all these lovely places in the town.
Thank you for this tour of lovely Stavanger. I especially liked the beautiful drawings/paintings of faces on the sides of the large buildings. Of course I loved the cats! :)
I like to go there, bucket list, maybe.
Love the authenticity of the town
Oh my gosh!!! Thank you for this video. My great grandfather was from Stavanger!!! My maternal grandma was the first of the Jensen’s to be born in the US. Thank you for showing me Stavanger! I have always wished I could go there and maybe even find some family members. Thanks you, Maria!! ❤❤❤🥹
How cool! I am glad you enjoyed the video, and I really hope you get to see it one day
Great video, I remember meeting the cat in gamle too.. I will upload my quick version of Stavanger too, a tourist perspective.
What a pretty city! I love the artwork and colors painted on the buildings, and the brick roadways. The hot chocolate at Boker og Borst looks scrumptious! Interesting shops in Gamle. Loved the delightful cats residents and the horseback riders along the beach. Thanks for the tour. Jenny USA
It is :-) I have always liked it. The horseback riders were such a treat that day! Thank you for watching
Very nice video. Thank you so much. Very beautiful country. MO, USA
Hello Again ☺. I can still feel your loss and sadness 😢. Me too, I miss my late husband Terry so much, he loved the sea. I read recently that grief never goes away, it just gets slower, quieter, but sometimes it comes rushing back like the sea. So the parting scene was very appropriate. Sending love, light and Spring time 🌷⚘ blessings. Take care of each other xx
That is so true, it never goes away, just gets easier to bear. Sending you lots of love
Love your videos. You looked very pretty in the dresses! 🥰💖💕
Thank you so much!!
I really enjoyed this video. Your city is beautiful! I loved seeing all of the street art and the color street. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
This is the one I was waiting for !
Well, I certainly have fond memories of some of the places you visited in this video.
The harbour and Gamle Stavanger are very familiar, and I also took a boat trip out to Lysefjorden to see Preikestolen which you mentioned in the video.
Fortunately the weather was fantastic when I was there, with blue skies and warm sunshine that September. In my memory I imagine that it's always like that there !
I didn't see the beach, but it appears from your video that I would have felt very at home there as it looks very similar to the beaches in Dorset on the south coast of England.
It was all a long time ago now, and it's funny to think that maybe little Maria was there on the same day I was. I would have been in my 20s at the time. Maybe we even passed each other in the street !
I could never have imagined that one day I would have a connection with someone from that city. Isn't life funny sometimes ! It feels right though because I did enjoy my time there, albeit that it was short.
Well, you've certainly given me a list of places to see if I ever visit Stavanger again, and this time I'll have a better idea of how to pronounce it too !
Bergen is definitely on my list to visit, and likely in the next few years actually, so I will be sure to make time on that trip to renew my acquaintance with dear old Stavanger.
Thank you Maria. This was definitely a great video and well worth the wait.
I am so glad you enjoyed it Mark! And I am also so glad you have fond memories from your visit to Norway and Stavanger.
The beaches are like nothing I have seen anywhere else in Norway, being there I always feel like they should be in some other country, it makes sense to me that there are similar ones in England.
Yes, its funny how life works isn't it? These connections and threads weaving us together.
I hope you get to see Bergen too someday, and Stavanger :-)
Sending love to you!
Wonderful as always Maria x
The shopping area looks kinda like the one in Reykjavík 🤩
Thanks for this. I’ve sent this on to family. Cheers fra Uskekalven.
Nice, I hope they will like it! Cheers David :-)
Mange fine minner fra vår tid i stavanger dukket opp når jeg så denne videoen :) veldig stemningsfull

Another beautiful video! 😊Thanks so much. You two have a great week too 😊
Thank you for the tour! I haven’t been to Stavanger but I should definitely visit. Loved it!❤
My pleasure Julianna
You did not disappoint! Thanks for a great tour - I loved that 2nd hand store and came away with a handknit shawl in aurora borealis colours... I was staying with a geographer for 3 days and really enjoyed exploring the town and eating good food while I waited for my husband to sail into town from a yachting trip ;). Next time I will make sure to rent a car and head out - I would also want to go to the wool mill at Sandnes lol - love your Porcelaine sweater - I was thinking of making one with purple but your red detailing is also really appealing!! Did you make it or was it gifted it to you?!
Thank you for watching. That sounds so nice! The sweater is a gift from a good friend of mine, I love it with the red. She knows I love this red color ;-)
Beautiful video Maria. I really enjoy your visuals and story-telling abilities. It's so nice to be able to discover Norway through your videos, thank you for taking us along on your journeys.
I´ve never been to Norway but it looks like a bit like Holland or the North of Germany. Nice. I am looking forward to make a visit.
Norway is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
07:41 awwwww
Great footage! Lovely video! 😊👍🏻
Many thanks!
Beautiful! Thanks!
Glad you like it!
Realmente un vídeo maravilloso. Precioso país. Saludos desde España.
Very nice 🎉
Love it. Live from april 2019 to november 2023 (Hinna sentrum). Best time
Thank you so much for a new wonderful video!!! Walking with you around your native town is like sharing something so very special and personal, especially when you recollect in your memory some days from your childhood, some places you used to walk around ☀🌷🌷🌷☀that is priceless to have an opportunity to visit the place you lived! Thank you so much for sharing these feelings with us, I could literally feel your emotions especially in a place so richly gifted by northern nature!!! 💙💙💙🌊
Thank you
Maria, this was such a work of art! While it is lovely to see beautiful far away places, your skills to capture and techniques to present such incredible videos are amazing! I absolutely love your work!😻 Thank you
Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this beautiful video. I just moved to Stavanger and will check out the recommended restaurants. I like the city so far, but it is quite noisy and lots of traffic in some parts, so I am struggling with that a bit. Thankfully there is so much nature around the city I can visit and will move towards the mountains this summer. Do you speak the Stavanger dialect? I feel it sounds very different then what I am trying to learn. But thankfully so many people speak very good English. Keep up the excellent work!
Hey Maria! Wow, I am rather shocked that I didn't know (or maybe didn't remember) that Stavanger was on the coast. An interesting city. I love the farge street (I have forgotten the proper name already) and the cafes and thrift shops. My house is a little colourful (I painted the window frames pink and the door frame greenish sort of like Monet's Giverny. The house itself is just plain unpainted board and batten. If the roof were not a sort of medium green I would have painted it red like a Norwegian house!) The sweaters at that first thrift shop that you said is good look so beautiful! "Boker og borst" - books and brushes? (Sorry I haven't figured out yet how to do the proper letters on my computer.) Definitely an area to explore! Thanks for the tour!
Børst is a very colloquial slang for alcohol :)
Your house sounds so lovely! Giverny is so beautiful too, so if its inspired by that it must be good.
Like @IaMmeMilly points out "børst" is slang for alcohol and that is what it means in this case, but it normally means what you said - brushes.
@@IaMmeMilly Thank you! "Brushes" didn't quite make sense! But I'm not a fluent Norwegian speaker, and only lived there for 1 school semester in 1970. My mother was Norwegian but never taught me, so I've been learning online for the past 4 years. It's so exciting to finally have this dream coming true. Now I need a visit to Norway (from Canada) to practise! 😊
@@janinafisher101 No, it would indeed be a VERY whimsical name. :D
I hope you get the chance to visit! Norway's nature is in many ways quite similar to Canada in many areas, but of course very different as well. I would love to visit Canada. :)
@IaMmeMilly @IaMmeMilly I had the same thought when I was in Sweden - so many similarities in landscape. I do love Norway and would love to visit my cousins again. I hope you get to come to Canada too. It's a beautiful and large country with such incredible and varied scenery. I'd like to see more parts of it too!
I loved this video so much. The little shops were amazing and so happy to see new shoes for Bendict (spelling is ok) 2019 I came to Norway, but not this place, so a good reason to return ❤ take care on your travels 🚙 I see the car is ok again
So glad you liked it
That green dress was cool👍
I liked it too! A bit too small though
Nice Video !
Thank you!
🙏🏾🩵 Thank you sooo much!! I will definetly visit the vegan💚restaurants!!
Awesome video again! Always nice to hear from locals what places are worth visiting. Stavanger has been on my list for a long time. I made a few notes for my future trip. I guess the city is much more lively in summer, like most Scandinavian cities? Funny to see a Metteson poster at 10:49, he's one of my favorite Norwegian artists (but there are so many great artists there)! I was at his live performance in The Netherlands last year. Did you listen to his new album? I love it!
I am glad you liked it! It is for sure more lively in summer 🙈. It was so gray all week when I tried to film this and it was a pain to edit because of the boring vibe (I am liking how it turned out in the end though). No I don't know about Metteson, I need to check him out :-)
@@Mariaandtheforest Can imagine it was hard to edit, but this type of weather also gives a special feeling to these places. Everything looks so quiet.
nice
Thanks!
im hoping to go here in June for my birthday, I can't decide whether to just go to Stavanger for 3 days or try and road trip from Oslo to Stavanger and back. What would you say? :)
my favourite norway channel
I would road trip! But only if you take the road through the mountains and Suleskaret 😊. The road through Kristiansand is not very interesting. Mostly highway.
hi, can you recommend any hikes in or around stavanger other than pulpit rock? :)
I am not super familiar with the best hikes in the area unfortunately. But of course a lot of people do the Kjerag hike! And walking in Sirdalen in general is really nice :-)
As always it’s a pleasure watching your videos one question does your husband Benidic does he speak English? I would only hear you talking to him in your language
He speaks English! He is just a bit uncomfortable in front of the camera and we both find it much more relaxing speaking our native language and just be ourselves in a way.
@@Mariaandtheforest understand, you guys are great for each other. I wish you all the best and thank you for responding. Also I am expecting to come to Helsinki in Finland this May what would you advise is the most interesting thing to do in just one day
@@Mariaandtheforest ❤️
@@bibibacchus8534 thank you! I don't know so much about Helsinki unfortunately, but I hope you will have a great trip!
@@Mariaandtheforest thank you❤️
Okay promise you will not laugh but I had a pearl collar just like the one that you showed when I was a teenager in the fifties
I love that! Was it a trend or was yours also more one of a kind? :-)
Hvordan forsvant snøen på noen få timer
Haha! Du er observant Birk 😉
Nice video but I noticed that although you said you originally were from Stavanger, you didn't speak the dialect. That is a mortal sin in Norway! 😂 There is also a lot more to Stavanger and the surrounding area that you didn't mention, so keep the videos coming. 👍
I did not say I was from Stavanger, I said I was born in Stavanger and that my parents are from there. Most of my family is from there, but I grew up somewhere else so my dialect is not like theirs (sadly, because I love that dialect!).
How do people walk on such sidewalks as at 6:39 when it's slippery? I'd rather stay at home then slide on my butt 😅
Well, it is just how it is in Norway in winter so you get used to it 😊
