Agree that the X brace sounds warmer in comparison videos. The problem is that the benefit of the V Class can only be felt when you actually play one. Its not about what you hear in the video but how you overall feel when playing. It provides very good playability probably due to the better sustain plus the V Class tone is more refined. Playing a V Class is very smooth and playing a X felt a bit unpolished when compared with the V. Its almost like X brace: big loud Hi fi speakers. V brace: Monitor speakers that's balance with high clarity. I think X brace maybe good for blues and strumming and V will be an excellent fingerstyle instrument and also good for playing modern guitar pieces.
I recently played a 314 with V-bracing at GC in Nashville and was underwhelmed much as I was underwhelmed by the V-bracing in this comparison. I find the V- bracing, at least through headphones, confirms my in- person experience. The X- bracing, in terms of my personal preference, sounds richer. But that is again, my personal preference, which may not align with someone else's preference.
V bracing is just what we are used to and perceive as the „right“ guitar tone. The differences are subtle, but the v bracing has a more clear and more intonated tone. It seems less rich because there is less inaccuracy. It’s the same reason we perceive tube amps as warmer, because of barely noticeable irregularities and imperfections. Same applies here. The V bracing is technically more precise just like digital amps but to many tube amps sound better because of its imperfections, same with the x bracing. Although I admittedly think the V bracing sounds better but I also like tube amps more.
I love the bell-like V bracing sound, notes are less distorted and warbly - people are so used to guitar notes sounding distorted and slightly out of tune less a music box they think that's the sound to root for but its not, the V bracing makes the guitar more piano like in its accuracy and overall a more precise instrument.
Chris, I don't know if you'll get this but I wanted to thank you for all the videos on guitars, playing, and in particular Taylor Guitars. I have (had) a 2008 Taylor Fall Limited Edition 714ce (Koa + Cedar), that I had purchased from Alamo Music Center/Taylor at the 2008 Taylor Road Show. Beautiful guitar, and sounded great, but it was never 'just right' for what I was wanting for tone, 'ring/chime', and sustain. I likely wouldn't have noticed it that much, but I also have a 2002 310ce that, to my ear, sounded better than the 714ce LTD. Your videos were instrumental in getting to a solution and also 'selling' me on a guitar change. Now before you expect to much, let me clarify that I was attempting to self teach at the time of the purchase, but life got in the way and I just stopped finding the time to continue. So color my comments somewhat based on that. I'm retired now and started taking formal lessons, which brought my 'issue' with the 714ce LTD vs. 310ce tone/sound back to the forefront. I was never sure if it was the guitar or me and after 11 years I knew it wasn't just new vs. old. On a whim I stopped by the AMC store on Babcock and spoke with Jon, and also tried some of the other Taylors. I found the (more or less) 'twin in sound to my 714 in another cedar topped Taylor and confirmed my suspicion that the difference is due to the tone wood/top wood. Obviously, some prefer the different tone response of cedar, but it just didn't have the ring/chime that I had come to expect after playing my 310. Jon brought in a 717e that just blew my 714ce LTD away in sustain, ring/chime, etc. It was an older X brace version and had Jon stopped there that is likely the 'trade' I would have made. However, after hearing so much about the V class bracing, I was wanting to try an 814ce. That was entirely based on your video comparing a 517, 717, and an 814ce. In the video, the chime/resonance/sustain of the 814ce clearly came through. However, you never know how close that will be to real life. Well, Jon didn't have an 814ce, but he did have a 914ce. OMG!!! The first thing I noticed that very light picking is needed to keep the volume down if you are in a small room. The next - well in the chords I'll just say I expected to see sparkles in the air from the clear bell like chime, resonance/sustain. I didn't want to like the guitar because it was a little 'blingy' for my taste. I kept going back and forth between it and the other Taylors I was trying (717, 712, etc)but the 914ce made just kept drawing me back. Jon offered me a good deal in trade for my 714ce Fall Limited, so I"m now the proud owner of a guitar I never imagined owning - a Taylor 914ce V class.
Best comparison on UA-cam. Excellent video! Put on my good Sennheiser phones to listen, what's coming through: I hear more volume and sustain in the 2018 914ce, but the overtones I'd expect are different... Some notes seem to linger a bit too long and not decay as expected. Not saying better or worse, but just that I can see how some players may actually prefer the older models... When you boil it down to just the tone character that 2017 914ce is an excellent guitar.
Yes, this gives me some sense of the difference, but in front of the soundhole is usually not the most accurate mic position for a steel-string acoustic guitar, and that sure seems to be the case here. Huge low end bump. I turned on a spectrum analyzer while watching, and you can see the huge low-end resonance. On the plus side, you can visually see how the bracing affects the low end: for the 2017, it looks like there's a resonance around 80-85 Hz, while for the 2018, it's around 95-100 Hz. By the end of this video I was unimpressed by the newer guitar, but I'd like to hear this done with proper mic technique. The guitar is so close-mic'ed here that just an inch or two of repositioning could change the tone of each instrument significantly. And since the guitars are braced differently (and thus have different sound fields), the proper comparison is *not* to have the mics in the same place, but to have the engineer find the place for each guitar that makes the recording sound as much like the guitar sounds like at a reasonable listening distance (or to the player). There were also significant loudness differences (granted you may want to communicate the volume difference, but that also distracts from the tonal differences). Thanks to AMC for trying, and giving us one data point, but I'm hoping AMC or others will do a more careful job in the future.
Very clever!! I never thought of using my spectrum analyzer for UA-cam, but it makes perfect sense! Much thanks for the effort and data points! Taylor specifically advertises that the xx2 guitars (narrow waist) are "the secret weapon for the studio", where the guitar will "sit right" in the mix. I don't really appreciate those efforts, because it doesn't leave me the choice where in the mix I want it to sit. Maybe the song needs the guitar to sit slightly higher or lower than "normal", but the guitar maker has already predefined where the guitar will sit, - by whatever standards - unless I get overly heavy with EQ to compensate, where they cut.
My goodness but one does take these reviews so seriously here! Just go to a store and play them and walk out with what you like or leave with nothing. I think Chris gives excellent reviews. How many people actually take the time or have the ability to use a systems analyzer? I'd much rather go check them out for myself but not always possible.

And in any case, if you're interested in *recording* the guitar, hearing how someone else has recorded it (if done well) is as good as you're going to get when you can't check one out for yourself. The point of the spectrum analyzer (not "systems analyzer") was just to verify that my initial subjective impression was not just a hunch or a reflection of bad listening room acoustics, but something objectively verifiable. It was just a datum for readers representing a measurement, rather than mere opinion. As a Taylor fan and owner myself, my aim here was to encourage other listeners who found the low end bump to be discouraging to realize that that's more likely a sign of improper mic technique, and not reflective of the actual tone of the guitar (in-person or well-recorded).
@@TLMuse Sorry but not equipped with a "spectrum analyzer", whatever. My point was it is not everyone who can go that far to analyze sound from a YT video. I was fortunate that I just happened to be in a music store with my sister and had the opportunity to play a Taylor. Otherwise I depend a lot on these reviews and comments from others who have experience with the actual guitars as I live rural and have limited access to music stores. I think Chris does a good job with his reviews and enjoy reading the comments (well, some, not all as there are always those who just hate the brand name it seems). Anyhow, it is great that you are able to analyze to such a degree from a video. As I am a novice with only five years of guitar experience (piano and banjo prior to that), I just go with what appeals to my ear and aesthetics do come into play there also, as I view them as works of art. I think everyone just has an opinion on what they like as far as tone, and sometimes just find it comical how serious some can be about analytics when it comes to any instrument. Not intended to be too personal as there are many others who do the same on these threads.
Look and compare the hand movements between both samples on initial strum - the human mind is nothing short of amazing me when it comes to such things. I have seen countless people change posture and playing style based solely on how they feel about a particular instrument - this demonstration was no exception
I played sevral v braced guitars 324ce ltd 424ce ltd 814ce at my favourite guitar shop.. shout out to long and mquade in Brampton Ontario... i hear a distinct difference between the old and the new style bracing. The v bracing is much brighter and has a wonderful clarity and sustain... overall playability is somewhat improved by sheer pleasure of hearing the voicing which just jumps right out at you. Though i would also say there is a subtle warmer tone to the old bracing. In my guitars case 2008 426ce ltd it has opened up so uniquely over time.. it would be interesting to hear how the v bracing opens up over time. But that story will be told many years from now, stay tuned... .
After owning the V class 914ce for 9 months I can tell you that this guitar will grow on you. It really does change the game and if you play in alternate tunings, you will be amazed by just how well this guitar responds. Worth every dime I paid for it. I suggest if you have not already played one, do yourself a favor and take one for a test drive.
Great job on the video. To me the 2017 sounds cleaner and clearer. The 2018 almost sound a bit muffled and “echo-y”. Yes the 2108 has more bottom for sure but I think the 2017 sounds more pleasant and balanced. I would be very happy with either one, but I don’t feel the the new V bracing is that much of a difference.

I love this Taylor and used to only play Martins but the design is incredible, not only superb tone but thinner than eg my Lowdens. Ore comfort, it’s the only guitar I play these days
I spent several hours at Willcutt Guitars in Lexington, KY (before Covid) back when the Vclass 914ce came out. I rotated between a PS14, the vclass 914ce and the xbraced 914ce. I recorded each and looked at the histograms to see if my ears were deceiving me. On these specific guitars, the x-braced had more sustain and volume as well as warmth. I kept coming back to the 2017 x-braced version which had the high performance package with adirondack bracing. I took it home.
In my hometown they had a brand new 914ce and it was just so exspencive it didn't sell so I just bought this guitar a couple months ago and I love this guitar and believe me it is exspencive but I also have 2015 614ce 2018 814ce dlx v brace and a 2015 816ce and a baby taylor and 1980 martin d28 that's in excellent condition I bought all guitars brand new except the d28 I am going to get the 517 pacific when it comes in my wife is gonna kill me but heck what away to die lol she doesn't understand a love so strong for my masterpieces made of wood I used to have a lot of Martin's but sold them I like martin but to me Taylor's are the best out there I've even owned d45 but I didn't learn to love it so my 816ce replaced it what a great sound this guitar has but heck they all sound good the d28 1980 is the only martin I fell in love with the new Martin's I just dont care for there not the same they went way down hill and I've had d35s d28 twelve string which was the worst guitar I ever had thos is from my experience with guitars
I have a 2018 914ce and the tone and sustain is just beautiful. Chris I love your reviews on all the guitars you compare. The best reviews on YT. I just ordered a 12 string with the V bracing and can hardly wait for it to arrive. Guitars to me are both beautiful sound instruments and works of art. This 914 had me raiding my pension fund after going back to the store 3 times to play it. When it feels right and sounds fabulous, what else can one do???
Preamble: I have 3 Taylor custom guitars (and the T5Z). I have to admit that the only "numbered" series guitar I liked was the 900 series. Comment: I still like the overall tone of the 2017 model on this video. But tone is so subjective that i need to play them in person. I think if only handed a 2018 guitar that i would really like the new tone and not look back. Good pleasing tone is easy to get used to and it is easy to forget the "old" good tone. I have said in other posts that the new appointments of the Builders Edition (I think that is what they call it) are just stunning. What a win win for the consumer....a new tone, new appointments from a company that will most likely add this to less expensive lines and from a company that is trying to be responsible with precious woods.....win win.
I think I prefer the "17".. The "18" has what sounds like.. Too much of a good thing.. It has a beautiful sound but it is so different that it is getting away from traditional guitar sound.. It has a tone and sound of its own.. The sustain is off the wall! Sure..a nice thing with some music but a piano with a sustain pedal is used occasionally to have it...but on a piano you can lift your foot and have a normal sustain level.. This guitar (18) is made with the pedal down basically.. I just have purchased a GA8E and pick it up today.. I have fallen for Taylor and just had no idea how amazing they really are.. Needless to say..its just my opinion but it is incredible that the V brace could be that drastic..but it is.. Thanks for the vid! Really great job!
As I watch videos and read message boards on v-bracing I wonder why nobody is asking to see audio testing charts for comparison. Wouldn't a computer analysis show the changes. I would love to see a comparison with Martin guitars also. Lets dyno these thangs!
After 2 years, I still hear the differences & prefer the 2018 but own a 914ce LTD sinker, 2019, that I think is better yet. A 2020 with koa, even sweeter.
Some models, I have recently played, in different sizes, scales, tone-woods sounded different with V bracing, and conversely some sounded different with the X! At least to my hearing, which is shot. I just walked away with a 322CE V braced wonder...It sounds so clean, but yet in great contrast to my old, and trusty 612C, but different, good different. Certainly not better or worse, and I've played a bunch. The 322CE top compresses the overtones a bit, so I can play loose, but the 612C...Well you better be on your toes, cause everything you do, right or wrong rings out clear and bright. Is there a difference, yep! Is it bad, nope...Is it good, yes, but really to me just different! Great video as they tend to be, thank you!
Thank you I'm really glad someone has done an effective comparison ! You are correct in the assessment , the V class sounds more 'linear' , but also a bit thinner but with quite a bit of sparkle. The X brace sounds fuller richer and more harmonic overtones for sure that are actually quite pleasing to my ear , and also has much sparkle too. I'm a bit of an acoustic guitar collector over the years and have owned 60+ North American made guitars .... I've owned 6+ Taylor's and they were either anniversary , custom , or signature models and they all sound pretty much fantastic amazing !! I don't think Taylor can go wrong with anything they do that's a given. I propose the company now be renamed 'Taylor-Powers' guitars. I am quite sure in the end it still all comes down to each individual guitar and the player's preference. I don't think the V class made any better of a guitar than the X bracing guitar. I conclude that in this comparison case the 2017 914ce is simply a better sounding guitar to my ears than the 2018 914ce , for now. This bracing might shake up the industry a bit , but I hope Martin etc., doesn't attempt anything like this ; I still like the Traditional vibes better , probably because they already did it really good to begin with ! 😎

If the guitars are both newly strung with the same strings (sorry, didn't listen to all the prelim stuff and if that was mentioned) and if not the comparison is not worth anything. For my ears the 2017 sounds crisp clear with a good balanced frequency response with good articulation. The 2018 doesn't have the shimmer of the 2017, but a little more balance and a bit better articulation. The trouble with the 2018 for my ears is that it sounds kind of boxy. If I had to buy one or the other it would be the 2017. Also, why doesn't anyone ever use the onboard electronics on these Taylor guitars for their demonstrations. Was hoping to hear if they have improved this since a couple years ago when I bought my 818e. That guitar's electronics was SO bad as to not even be usable! Installed a LR Baggs M80 to get any amplified use when not mik'd!
There's a warmth to the X-braced 914 that's missing... When doing the X-braced vs V-braced comparison in person this comes across as a small dip in the mid-range on the v-braced models. Also I do not think sustain is longer on the V-braced guitars, I think Taylor has achieved more balanced sustain lowest fret to highest, but at the cost of losing some sustain for open position cording. Audio test conducted by Pegheadnation seem to show measurements indicating this is real.... As with everything there are trade offs. My issue with V-class bracing is that Taylor's marketing department wants to pretend that there aren't any trade offs and that they've re-invented the acoustic steel string guitar.... Once the trust is broken, you don't get it back.
Sounds to me like the decaying notes on the V bracing hold the initial pitch longer when sustaining a chord. It also sounds like Taylor figured out how to shift the EQ on the bass to a bit more mids as if turning a knob on a graphic EQ. I’m curious about how you feel about V bracing after a couple years, as I’m sure you’ve had numerous opportunities to play them since this video.
From a business standpoint you have no choice but to say Taylor's new V class bracing is better than the "X", if you want to continue to carry the line....but certainly the X braced guitars sound is much more beautiful, and rich toned (although it is older) As you said, volume is really a moot point for acoustic tone, unless you want to thrash!
Wow! There really is a significant improvement in the quality of the sound with the V class bracing. I worried that this was going to turn out to be mostly marketing hype, but no it's real. Thank you very much for posting this comparison.
I've never been a Taylor fan because I think the midrange borders on sounding nasal. This V Class model reduces that but still has nice note separation and clarity. Also seems just a touch warmer. I think there may end up being a Taylor in my collection at some point, which is something I never thought I'd say!
I have never - ever - heard anyone ever refer to Taylor guitars has having a mid-range that sounds nasal. Taylor's are uniformly known to have a balanced - if mid-scooped - sound. Which isn't to say that is necessarily desired or liked. But to each their own...

I like the new V bracing, played 314 and thought it sounded fantastic. The older sound, like my 2017 110 is great but i think the twang of out of tune notes when strumming various chords would be forgotten in no time in favor if the better intonation at all points.
I found this video really interesting. I was expecting the V-bracing to be different but not that different! It sounds far thinner than the old x-bracing, with less warmth and depth. What a shame!
You really need to hear it in person. The V braced 314ce I tried out was fantastic..loved it. I have an older 110 and to me most all of the older models sound almost just like it even across different types of wood give or take a bit.
I must admit, that I still cannot say which one sounds more harmonious to me over the built-in speakers of my Sony TV. The difference must be subtle enough to require proper studio monitors, which are currently stowed away, because I'm installing new studio furniture and room treatments. * The reasoning for less dissonance makes enough sense, not knowing every factor that goes into that anyway. Is a V shape enough, or would the braces really need to be parallel for that? I can't say if that bracing was a hip shot or a Genelec-type eternity of computer modelling that went into it. > For this type of guitar being an investment - which after years can even appreciate in value - longevity seems equally important to tuning and volume, which would score a point for the older X bracing according to people I spoke to. So I think I will just let my preferred wood and guitar type make the decision.
It is, I suppose, all in the ear of the listener, and we can't all be perfectly positioned to hear subtleties, or have machines to tell us they exist, yet obviously they do. Anyway, something new is way overdue, and to my ears the Vee bracing sounds like the same guitar aged forty years, gaining that undefinable richness when a great guitar mellows out. Give this a few years to see how the new bracing holds up before needing a reset. Always practical, me, but I'm willing to give it a try. Three cheers for Taylor! But really, can't you picture Gibson shaking their heads and going, "Huh?" Also, Chris, your presentation somehow infused excitement into the arcane realm of excitation and stiffness. Thank you.
personally The difference is to me, one of personal taste at the lower frets....but once you start working your way up the fret board....wow if that isnt soo much sharper(which I suppose is a matter to taste too to some degree). To me, the 2018 V-bracing model had more lows and mids than the 2017 X-braced model. This makes the highs sound lessened by comparison. But I like that for most of the playing I do. But sometimes you really want that bright top end (More Than a Feeling, anyone?)
I think the X bracing has a fuller sound. For doing solo stuff or jammin' around the house I'd go with the X bracing. For a band situation though the V bracing might do just fine especially if there's also a bass player. One thing too is that eq ing can do a lot to bring out the different frequencies. If you have a really nice PA system with someone who knows what they're doing the V bracing could sound really full too. Nice video.
Not accusing him of anything, but it seems like he put a bass boost eq or another type of preamp setting on the 2018 model. It has way more bass end than the 2017 model, which I guess could be the v bracing, but the difference seems too noticable. I watched another video where this bass boost seems present in the 2018 model, compared to the 2017 model, so i guess this v bracing could really be something special.
I think this is the only video where I like the newer version better, but that's mainly because the mic placement is pretty bad in this video. The mic is right up the soundhole, making the guitars sound waaay more woofy than they actually are. The lack of bass on the V brace model helps in this occasion, but otherwise I keep finding them too thin sounding.
I need to sand down the saddle height of all my Taylors including the T5z & T5 pro (for about 0.5 to 1 mm) even though the latter two are already seemed low.
Ok. I have to change my mind here after playing the new 914ce. I have played mine for almost a month now and it is an amazing guitar. If you are thinking of a high end guitar, I would say at least play one. Most likely the very best guitar Taylor has every made.
Why are people scared to strum Taylor guitars with any vigor? I want to hear if it has that guitar fart when you play a heavy G chord. Finger picking is great but c'mon this is a review. The 2018 sounded boomy while the 2017 sounded clear.
X brace sounds as good if not slight better to my ears. iPad through a set of cabled Sennheiser momentum 2s over ear. Both sound great to be fair but i didn’t think v brace did anything spectacular
Yes, the 2017 sounds better! 2018 is muddier with an unfriendly excess of mids.... If someone was offering me the choice of either - I'd take 2017 hands down!
I'm not sure it is possible to say that one of those excellent instruments sounds "better" than the other. That is a completely personal thing. I am a new(ish) guitar player having taken it up as a retirement project. I hope to be around long enough to practice enough to justify this class of guitar. Sorry to be the party pooper, but in this video I really prefer the wider, brighter and much more complex tone of the 2017 model... Both are great guitars though.
Eltjo, the gain wasn't adjusted for the v-class 914ce. What you perceive as a less complex tone is clipping. In the second comparison (starting at 11.10) the E- and A-string of the guitars aren't played. Here both guitars sound almost the same. What strikes me is that sound of the new 914ce is more like the sound of closed miked a guitar, proximity effect and all. It seems, as if the distance between the guitar and the microphone needs to be greater than usual. The v-bracing 914ce sounds the same as my 914ce, when I pick it up at a very close distance with a DPA 4099G.
I agree. The 2017 has warmer tone. The 2018 is kind of grating and harsh sounding to me. I thought the 2018 sounded a little better flat picking than finger picking. I give the nod to last years model.
I've got the "old" 914ce. The sound of the new one is the same as my 914ce, when close miked live with a DPA 4099. The projection of the 2017 and the 2018 914ce seems to be different.
Excellent review. It seems to me that the V brace is a little warmer while still being well articulated. I bet if you played one for two weeks and then picked up the other the differences would be really apparent. I look forward to the V bracing getting down to the Academy series guitars. : )
I've watched a couple other V-class bracing comparisons and I always laugh at the comments on how the older bracing sounds better based on what is heard from a UA-cam video. Compressed files over the Internet using different mics and mic placement people! Not to mention what you the listeners are using to listen to the review, ie headphones computer monitor speakers, etc. One guy actually said the 2017 sounded more musical. You can't tell! The only thing you can objectively hear in this review that can translate to the real world is the sustain, which is obviously longer on the V-braced guitar. Sometimes it's so long it stops short only from Chris taking his fingers off the fret board. I just purchased a 712CE V-class and can tell you in comparing to three other Taylors is that this bracing system works just like advertised. I have 316, 414 and 514LTD and none of them sustain as long as the 712 with a shorter scale length! The bass is so close in volume and authority to the 414 that it's amazing. Another amazing thing I can do with this guitar is tune the 6th string down to B to play a Preston Reed tune without the intonation on that string falling apart. That's a tough accomplishment even on the full scale guitars. I'm so impressed with this guitar I plan on adding a 12 fret x12 in the future, just not sure which one yet.
I hear the 2018 more booming, with strong bass and mids - maybe because of the stronger volume, I don't know. The 2017 sounds more balanced to me. If I had to pick a track, I'd take the one you played with the 2017.
V-Class is certainly a guitar on a different level. But I'll have to wait to hear for myself when (and if) V-Class trickles down to the 800 and 400 Series.

I assume that was the wierd subconscious thing that happens when you hear a more pleasing sound & your brain tells your fingers to play with more expression, rather than any set-up differences?
I don't think it was a subconscious preference. As I noted at the end of the video, the V-class braced guitars is louder and that allows me to play with a lighter touch, which in turn allows me to be more expressive. - Chris
18 kills the 17th hands down the over tones in the guitar are near perfect all the time the guitar is peforming consistantly with its dynamic and the sustain on it is so much better.
Cannot wait for your next review so that i can decide what is best the traditional X bracing of Martin or the new V class bracing of Taylor because it till be decisive what will the future of acoustic guitar. Thanks in advance

Agree that the X brace sounds warmer in comparison videos. The problem is that the benefit of the V Class can only be felt when you actually play one. Its not about what you hear in the video but how you overall feel when playing. It provides very good playability probably due to the better sustain plus the V Class tone is more refined. Playing a V Class is very smooth and playing a X felt a bit unpolished when compared with the V. Its almost like X brace: big loud Hi fi speakers. V brace: Monitor speakers that's balance with high clarity. I think X brace maybe good for blues and strumming and V will be an excellent fingerstyle instrument and also good for playing modern guitar pieces.
I would prefer a BIG HIFI speaker than a monitor speaker any day
I recently played a 314 with V-bracing at GC in Nashville and was underwhelmed much as I was underwhelmed by the V-bracing in this comparison.
I find the V- bracing, at least through headphones, confirms my in- person experience. The X- bracing, in terms of my personal preference, sounds richer.
But that is again, my personal preference, which may not align with someone else's preference.
V bracing is just what we are used to and perceive as the „right“ guitar tone. The differences are subtle, but the v bracing has a more clear and more intonated tone. It seems less rich because there is less inaccuracy.
It’s the same reason we perceive tube amps as warmer, because of barely noticeable irregularities and imperfections.
Same applies here. The V bracing is technically more precise just like digital amps but to many tube amps sound better because of its imperfections, same with the x bracing. Although I admittedly think the V bracing sounds better but I also like tube amps more.
I love the bell-like V bracing sound, notes are less distorted and warbly - people are so used to guitar notes sounding distorted and slightly out of tune less a music box they think that's the sound to root for but its not, the V bracing makes the guitar more piano like in its accuracy and overall a more precise instrument.

Chris, I don't know if you'll get this but I wanted to thank you for all the videos on guitars, playing, and in particular Taylor Guitars. I have (had) a 2008 Taylor Fall Limited Edition 714ce (Koa + Cedar), that I had purchased from Alamo Music Center/Taylor at the 2008 Taylor Road Show. Beautiful guitar, and sounded great, but it was never 'just right' for what I was wanting for tone, 'ring/chime', and sustain. I likely wouldn't have noticed it that much, but I also have a 2002 310ce that, to my ear, sounded better than the 714ce LTD.
Your videos were instrumental in getting to a solution and also 'selling' me on a guitar change.
Now before you expect to much, let me clarify that I was attempting to self teach at the time of the purchase, but life got in the way and I just stopped finding the time to continue. So color my comments somewhat based on that. I'm retired now and started taking formal lessons, which brought my 'issue' with the 714ce LTD vs. 310ce tone/sound back to the forefront.
I was never sure if it was the guitar or me and after 11 years I knew it wasn't just new vs. old. On a whim I stopped by the AMC store on Babcock and spoke with Jon, and also tried some of the other Taylors. I found the (more or less) 'twin in sound to my 714 in another cedar topped Taylor and confirmed my suspicion that the difference is due to the tone wood/top wood. Obviously, some prefer the different tone response of cedar, but it just didn't have the ring/chime that I had come to expect after playing my 310.
Jon brought in a 717e that just blew my 714ce LTD away in sustain, ring/chime, etc. It was an older X brace version and had Jon stopped there that is likely the 'trade' I would have made. However, after hearing so much about the V class bracing, I was wanting to try an 814ce. That was entirely based on your video comparing a 517, 717, and an 814ce. In the video, the chime/resonance/sustain of the 814ce clearly came through. However, you never know how close that will be to real life. Well, Jon didn't have an 814ce, but he did have a 914ce.
OMG!!! The first thing I noticed that very light picking is needed to keep the volume down if you are in a small room. The next - well in the chords I'll just say I expected to see sparkles in the air from the clear bell like chime, resonance/sustain. I didn't want to like the guitar because it was a little 'blingy' for my taste. I kept going back and forth between it and the other Taylors I was trying (717, 712, etc)but the 914ce made just kept drawing me back. Jon offered me a good deal in trade for my 714ce Fall Limited, so I"m now the proud owner of a guitar I never imagined owning - a Taylor 914ce V class.
Best comparison on UA-cam. Excellent video! Put on my good Sennheiser phones to listen, what's coming through: I hear more volume and sustain in the 2018 914ce, but the overtones I'd expect are different... Some notes seem to linger a bit too long and not decay as expected. Not saying better or worse, but just that I can see how some players may actually prefer the older models... When you boil it down to just the tone character that 2017 914ce is an excellent guitar.
After playing this guitar myself today at their store, I agree with everything Chris is saying about the new V class bracing.
Yes, this gives me some sense of the difference, but in front of the soundhole is usually not the most accurate mic position for a steel-string acoustic guitar, and that sure seems to be the case here. Huge low end bump. I turned on a spectrum analyzer while watching, and you can see the huge low-end resonance. On the plus side, you can visually see how the bracing affects the low end: for the 2017, it looks like there's a resonance around 80-85 Hz, while for the 2018, it's around 95-100 Hz. By the end of this video I was unimpressed by the newer guitar, but I'd like to hear this done with proper mic technique. The guitar is so close-mic'ed here that just an inch or two of repositioning could change the tone of each instrument significantly. And since the guitars are braced differently (and thus have different sound fields), the proper comparison is *not* to have the mics in the same place, but to have the engineer find the place for each guitar that makes the recording sound as much like the guitar sounds like at a reasonable listening distance (or to the player). There were also significant loudness differences (granted you may want to communicate the volume difference, but that also distracts from the tonal differences). Thanks to AMC for trying, and giving us one data point, but I'm hoping AMC or others will do a more careful job in the future.

Taylor specifically advertises that the xx2 guitars (narrow waist) are "the secret weapon for the studio", where the guitar will "sit right" in the mix.
I don't really appreciate those efforts, because it doesn't leave me the choice where in the mix I want it to sit. Maybe the song needs the guitar to sit slightly higher or lower than "normal", but the guitar maker has already predefined where the guitar will sit, - by whatever standards - unless I get overly heavy with EQ to compensate, where they cut.
My goodness but one does take these reviews so seriously here! Just go to a store and play them and walk out with what you like or leave with nothing. I think Chris gives excellent reviews. How many people actually take the time or have the ability to use a systems analyzer? I'd much rather go check them out for myself but not always possible.

And in any case, if you're interested in *recording* the guitar, hearing how someone else has recorded it (if done well) is as good as you're going to get when you can't check one out for yourself. The point of the spectrum analyzer (not "systems analyzer") was just to verify that my initial subjective impression was not just a hunch or a reflection of bad listening room acoustics, but something objectively verifiable. It was just a datum for readers representing a measurement, rather than mere opinion. As a Taylor fan and owner myself, my aim here was to encourage other listeners who found the low end bump to be discouraging to realize that that's more likely a sign of improper mic technique, and not reflective of the actual tone of the guitar (in-person or well-recorded).
@@TLMuse Sorry but not equipped with a "spectrum analyzer", whatever. My point was it is not everyone who can go that far to analyze sound from a YT video. I was fortunate that I just happened to be in a music store with my sister and had the opportunity to play a Taylor. Otherwise I depend a lot on these reviews and comments from others who have experience with the actual guitars as I live rural and have limited access to music stores. I think Chris does a good job with his reviews and enjoy reading the comments (well, some, not all as there are always those who just hate the brand name it seems). Anyhow, it is great that you are able to analyze to such a degree from a video. As I am a novice with only five years of guitar experience (piano and banjo prior to that), I just go with what appeals to my ear and aesthetics do come into play there also, as I view them as works of art. I think everyone just has an opinion on what they like as far as tone, and sometimes just find it comical how serious some can be about analytics when it comes to any instrument. Not intended to be too personal as there are many others who do the same on these threads.

X bracing is so much better man hands down. I know so many musicians and they all tell me that x bracing sounds better so its not just me.
I played sevral v braced guitars 324ce ltd 424ce ltd 814ce at my favourite guitar shop.. shout out to long and mquade in Brampton Ontario... i hear a distinct difference between the old and the new style bracing. The v bracing is much brighter and has a wonderful clarity and sustain... overall playability is somewhat improved by sheer pleasure of hearing the voicing which just jumps right out at you. Though i would also say there is a subtle warmer tone to the old bracing. In my guitars case 2008 426ce ltd it has opened up so uniquely over time.. it would be interesting to hear how the v bracing opens up over time. But that story will be told many years from now, stay tuned... .
After owning the V class 914ce for 9 months I can tell you that this guitar will grow on you. It really does change the game and if you play in alternate tunings, you will be amazed by just how well this guitar responds. Worth every dime I paid for it. I suggest if you have not already played one, do yourself a favor and take one for a test drive.
Great job on the video. To me the 2017 sounds cleaner and clearer. The 2018 almost sound a bit muffled and “echo-y”. Yes the 2108 has more bottom for sure but I think the 2017 sounds more pleasant and balanced. I would be very happy with either one, but I don’t feel the the new V bracing is that much of a difference.

I love this Taylor and used to only play Martins but the design is incredible, not only superb tone but thinner than eg my Lowdens. Ore comfort, it’s the only guitar I play these days
I spent several hours at Willcutt Guitars in Lexington, KY (before Covid) back when the Vclass 914ce came out. I rotated between a PS14, the vclass 914ce and the xbraced 914ce. I recorded each and looked at the histograms to see if my ears were deceiving me. On these specific guitars, the x-braced had more sustain and volume as well as warmth. I kept coming back to the 2017 x-braced version which had the high performance package with adirondack bracing. I took it home.

In my hometown they had a brand new 914ce and it was just so exspencive it didn't sell so I just bought this guitar a couple months ago and I love this guitar and believe me it is exspencive but I also have 2015 614ce 2018 814ce dlx v brace and a 2015 816ce and a baby taylor and 1980 martin d28 that's in excellent condition I bought all guitars brand new except the d28 I am going to get the 517 pacific when it comes in my wife is gonna kill me but heck what away to die lol she doesn't understand a love so strong for my masterpieces made of wood I used to have a lot of Martin's but sold them I like martin but to me Taylor's are the best out there I've even owned d45 but I didn't learn to love it so my 816ce replaced it what a great sound this guitar has but heck they all sound good the d28 1980 is the only martin I fell in love with the new Martin's I just dont care for there not the same they went way down hill and I've had d35s d28 twelve string which was the worst guitar I ever had thos is from my experience with guitars

I have a 2018 914ce and the tone and sustain is just beautiful. Chris I love your reviews on all the guitars you compare. The best reviews on YT. I just ordered a 12 string with the V bracing and can hardly wait for it to arrive. Guitars to me are both beautiful sound instruments and works of art. This 914 had me raiding my pension fund after going back to the store 3 times to play it. When it feels right and sounds fabulous, what else can one do???

Preamble: I have 3 Taylor custom guitars (and the T5Z). I have to admit that the only "numbered" series guitar I liked was the 900 series. Comment: I still like the overall tone of the 2017 model on this video. But tone is so subjective that i need to play them in person. I think if only handed a 2018 guitar that i would really like the new tone and not look back. Good pleasing tone is easy to get used to and it is easy to forget the "old" good tone. I have said in other posts that the new appointments of the Builders Edition (I think that is what they call it) are just stunning. What a win win for the consumer....a new tone, new appointments from a company that will most likely add this to less expensive lines and from a company that is trying to be responsible with precious woods.....win win.
I think I prefer the "17".. The "18" has what sounds like.. Too much of a good thing.. It has a beautiful sound but it is so different that it is getting away from traditional guitar sound.. It has a tone and sound of its own.. The sustain is off the wall! Sure..a nice thing with some music but a piano with a sustain pedal is used occasionally to have it...but on a piano you can lift your foot and have a normal sustain level.. This guitar (18) is made with the pedal down basically.. I just have purchased a GA8E and pick it up today.. I have fallen for Taylor and just had no idea how amazing they really are.. Needless to say..its just my opinion but it is incredible that the V brace could be that drastic..but it is.. Thanks for the vid! Really great job!
As I watch videos and read message boards on v-bracing I wonder why nobody is asking to see audio testing charts for comparison. Wouldn't a computer analysis show the changes. I would love to see a comparison with Martin guitars also. Lets dyno these thangs!

After 2 years, I still hear the differences & prefer the 2018 but own a 914ce LTD sinker, 2019, that I think is better yet. A 2020 with koa, even sweeter.
Some models, I have recently played, in different sizes, scales, tone-woods sounded different with V bracing, and conversely some sounded different with the X! At least to my hearing, which is shot. I just walked away with a 322CE V braced wonder...It sounds so clean, but yet in great contrast to my old, and trusty 612C, but different, good different. Certainly not better or worse, and I've played a bunch. The 322CE top compresses the overtones a bit, so I can play loose, but the 612C...Well you better be on your toes, cause everything you do, right or wrong rings out clear and bright. Is there a difference, yep! Is it bad, nope...Is it good, yes, but really to me just different! Great video as they tend to be, thank you!

You are correct in the assessment , the V class sounds more 'linear' , but also a bit thinner but with quite a bit of sparkle.
The X brace sounds fuller richer and more harmonic overtones for sure that are actually quite pleasing to my ear , and also has much sparkle too.
I'm a bit of an acoustic guitar collector over the years and have owned 60+ North American made guitars ....
I've owned 6+ Taylor's and they were either anniversary , custom , or signature models and they all sound pretty much fantastic amazing !!
I don't think Taylor can go wrong with anything they do that's a given.
I propose the company now be renamed 'Taylor-Powers' guitars.
I am quite sure in the end it still all comes down to each individual guitar and the player's preference. I don't think the V class made any better of a guitar than the X bracing guitar. I conclude that in this comparison case the 2017 914ce is simply a better sounding guitar to my ears than the 2018 914ce , for now.
This bracing might shake up the industry a bit , but I hope Martin etc., doesn't attempt anything like this ; I still like the Traditional vibes better , probably because they already did it really good to begin with ! 😎

If the guitars are both newly strung with the same strings (sorry, didn't listen to all the prelim stuff and if that was mentioned) and if not the comparison is not worth anything. For my ears the 2017 sounds crisp clear with a good balanced frequency response with good articulation. The 2018 doesn't have the shimmer of the 2017, but a little more balance and a bit better articulation. The trouble with the 2018 for my ears is that it sounds kind of boxy. If I had to buy one or the other it would be the 2017. Also, why doesn't anyone ever use the onboard electronics on these Taylor guitars for their demonstrations. Was hoping to hear if they have improved this since a couple years ago when I bought my 818e. That guitar's electronics was SO bad as to not even be usable! Installed a LR Baggs M80 to get any amplified use when not mik'd!

There's a warmth to the X-braced 914 that's missing... When doing the X-braced vs V-braced comparison in person this comes across as a small dip in the mid-range on the v-braced models. Also I do not think sustain is longer on the V-braced guitars, I think Taylor has achieved more balanced sustain lowest fret to highest, but at the cost of losing some sustain for open position cording. Audio test conducted by Pegheadnation seem to show measurements indicating this is real.... As with everything there are trade offs. My issue with V-class bracing is that Taylor's marketing department wants to pretend that there aren't any trade offs and that they've re-invented the acoustic steel string guitar.... Once the trust is broken, you don't get it back.
Sounds to me like the decaying notes on the V bracing hold the initial pitch longer when sustaining a chord. It also sounds like Taylor figured out how to shift the EQ on the bass to a bit more mids as if turning a knob on a graphic EQ. I’m curious about how you feel about V bracing after a couple years, as I’m sure you’ve had numerous opportunities to play them since this video.
Both sound amazing deep rich texture. That said the v bracing rings more true.

From a business standpoint you have no choice but to say Taylor's new V class bracing is better than the "X", if you want to continue to carry the line....but certainly the X braced guitars sound is much more beautiful, and rich toned (although it is older) As you said, volume is really a moot point for acoustic tone, unless you want to thrash!

I've never been a Taylor fan because I think the midrange borders on sounding nasal. This V Class model reduces that but still has nice note separation and clarity. Also seems just a touch warmer. I think there may end up being a Taylor in my collection at some point, which is something I never thought I'd say!
I have never - ever - heard anyone ever refer to Taylor guitars has having a mid-range that sounds nasal. Taylor's are uniformly known to have a balanced - if mid-scooped - sound. Which isn't to say that is necessarily desired or liked. But to each their own...

I like the new V bracing, played 314 and thought it sounded fantastic. The older sound, like my 2017 110 is great but i think the twang of out of tune notes when strumming various chords would be forgotten in no time in favor if the better intonation at all points.
The va braced model sounds cleaner and more clear. Do they incorporate V bracing in entry level Taylor models?
V-class sounds better. I'm surprised there's a debate. I would definitely change the strings though to tame some of that sizzle.

I found this video really interesting. I was expecting the V-bracing to be different but not that different! It sounds far thinner than the old x-bracing, with less warmth and depth. What a shame!
You really need to hear it in person. The V braced 314ce I tried out was fantastic..loved it. I have an older 110 and to me most all of the older models sound almost just like it even across different types of wood give or take a bit.
I must admit, that I still cannot say which one sounds more harmonious to me over the built-in speakers of my Sony TV. The difference must be subtle enough to require proper studio monitors, which are currently stowed away, because I'm installing new studio furniture and room treatments.
* The reasoning for less dissonance makes enough sense, not knowing every factor that goes into that anyway. Is a V shape enough, or would the braces really need to be parallel for that?
I can't say if that bracing was a hip shot or a Genelec-type eternity of computer modelling that went into it.

I like that the 2018 sounds a bit warmer, but overall, the tone of the 2017 is clearly superior.
It is, I suppose, all in the ear of the listener, and we can't all be perfectly positioned to hear subtleties, or have machines to tell us they exist, yet obviously they do. Anyway, something new is way overdue, and to my ears the Vee bracing sounds like the same guitar aged forty years, gaining that undefinable richness when a great guitar mellows out. Give this a few years to see how the new bracing holds up before needing a reset. Always practical, me, but I'm willing to give it a try. Three cheers for Taylor! But really, can't you picture Gibson shaking their heads and going, "Huh?" Also, Chris, your presentation somehow infused excitement into the arcane realm of excitation and stiffness. Thank you.
personally The difference is to me, one of personal taste at the lower frets....but once you start working your way up the fret board....wow if that isnt soo much sharper(which I suppose is a matter to taste too to some degree). The V-class is a completely different animal. Bigger, warmer and more articulate. There really is a very big difference. Well done Taylor.
To me, the 2018 V-bracing model had more lows and mids than the 2017 X-braced model. This makes the highs sound lessened by comparison. But I like that for most of the playing I do. But sometimes you really want that bright top end (More Than a Feeling, anyone?)
I think the X bracing has a fuller sound. For doing solo stuff or jammin' around the house I'd go with the X bracing. For a band situation though
the V bracing might do just fine especially if there's also a bass player. One thing too is that eq ing can do a lot to bring out the different
frequencies. If you have a really nice PA system with someone who knows what they're doing the V bracing could sound really full too.

The engine of the guitar is the player. The architecture or engineering is more the tone of the guitar.

I'm a complete beginner and i can clearly hear the difference in richness.. though both are great.
Not accusing him of anything, but it seems like he put a bass boost eq or another type of preamp setting on the 2018 model. It has way more bass end than the 2017 model, which I guess could be the v bracing, but the difference seems too noticable. I watched another video where this bass boost seems present in the 2018 model, compared to the 2017 model, so i guess this v bracing could really be something special.
I think this is the only video where I like the newer version better, but that's mainly because the mic placement is pretty bad in this video. The mic is right up the soundhole, making the guitars sound waaay more woofy than they actually are. The lack of bass on the V brace model helps in this occasion, but otherwise I keep finding them too thin sounding.
I need to sand down the saddle height of all my Taylors including the T5z & T5 pro (for about 0.5 to 1 mm) even though the latter two are already seemed low.
Ok. I have to change my mind here after playing the new 914ce. I have played mine for almost a month now and it is an amazing guitar. If you are thinking of a high end guitar, I would say at least play one. Most likely the very best guitar Taylor has every made.

Why are people scared to strum Taylor guitars with any vigor? I want to hear if it has that guitar fart when you play a heavy G chord. Finger picking is great but c'mon this is a review. The 2018 sounded boomy while the 2017 sounded clear.

I'm not sure it is possible to say that one of those excellent instruments sounds "better" than the other. That is a completely personal thing. I am a new(ish) guitar player having taken it up as a retirement project. I hope to be around long enough to practice enough to justify this class of guitar. Either one would be more than satisfactory. I currently have a mahogany GS Mini. I always enjoy your reviews. Thanks!!

2017 has brighter sound and sustain and decay is a little better than the 2018.
Sorry to be the party pooper, but in this video I really prefer the wider, brighter and much more complex tone of the 2017 model... Both are great guitars though.
I'll poop as well. The 2017 was more open, bright and articulate. Most definitely a striking difference between the two. Give me the 2017, please. :)
Eltjo, the gain wasn't adjusted for the v-class 914ce. What you perceive as a less complex tone is clipping. In the second comparison (starting at 11.10) the E- and A-string of the guitars aren't played. Here both guitars sound almost the same. What strikes me is that sound of the new 914ce is more like the sound of closed miked a guitar, proximity effect and all. It seems, as if the distance between the guitar and the microphone needs to be greater than usual. The v-bracing 914ce sounds the same as my 914ce, when I pick it up at a very close distance with a DPA 4099G.

I agree. The 2017 has warmer tone. The 2018 is kind of grating and harsh sounding to me. I thought the 2018 sounded a little better flat picking than finger picking. I give the nod to last years model.
I've got the "old" 914ce. The sound of the new one is the same as my 914ce, when close miked live with a DPA 4099. The projection of the 2017 and the 2018 914ce seems to be different.
Excellent review. It seems to me that the V brace is a little warmer while still being well articulated. I bet if you played one for two weeks and then picked up the other the differences would be really apparent. I look forward to the V bracing getting down to the Academy series guitars. : )
I've watched a couple other V-class bracing comparisons and I always laugh at the comments on how the older bracing sounds better based on what is heard from a UA-cam video. Compressed files over the Internet using different mics and mic placement people! Not to mention what you the listeners are using to listen to the review, ie headphones computer monitor speakers, etc. One guy actually said the 2017 sounded more musical. You can't tell! The only thing you can objectively hear in this review that can translate to the real world is the sustain, which is obviously longer on the V-braced guitar. Sometimes it's so long it stops short only from Chris taking his fingers off the fret board. I just purchased a 712CE V-class and can tell you in comparing to three other Taylors is that this bracing system works just like advertised. I have 316, 414 and 514LTD and none of them sustain as long as the 712 with a shorter scale length! The bass is so close in volume and authority to the 414 that it's amazing. Another amazing thing I can do with this guitar is tune the 6th string down to B to play a Preston Reed tune without the intonation on that string falling apart. That's a tough accomplishment even on the full scale guitars. I'm so impressed with this guitar I plan on adding a 12 fret x12 in the future, just not sure which one yet.

I hear the 2018 more booming, with strong bass and mids - maybe because of the stronger volume, I don't know.
The 2017 sounds more balanced to me. If I had to pick a track, I'd take the one you played with the 2017.

Oh yeah, I heard the difference. Tonality of the Vee is more pronounced
V-Class is certainly a guitar on a different level. But I'll have to wait to hear for myself when (and if) V-Class trickles down to the 800 and 400 Series.

Thank you for an excellent comparison, & for putting the video up so fast! Intetesting how much more expressive your playing became on the v-class. I assume that was the wierd subconscious thing that happens when you hear a more pleasing sound & your brain tells your fingers to play with more expression, rather than any set-up differences?
I don't think it was a subconscious preference. As I noted at the end of the video, the V-class braced guitars is louder and that allows me to play with a lighter touch, which in turn allows me to be more expressive. - Chris

the v bracing sounds too bright to me i prefer x bracing for that bass and warmth
Why's Chris playing the 2017 worse than the 2018 model, ie missing notes on his fingering etc, is it harder to play?
Not harder to play, and sometimes I miss notes but the volume of the new V-class guitar does allow me to play with a softer touch. - Chris
with the improved bracing the taylor now almost sounds half as good as a Collings!
Is Taylor considering wiggly frets? How about carbon fiber or graphene?

On the smaller guitar, maybe it would have a more pronounced effect, and the stability risk should be less.
The V braced guitar has a much better bass response.
18 kills the 17th hands down the over tones in the guitar are near perfect all the time the guitar is peforming consistantly with its dynamic and the sustain on it is so much better.

the 2017 is better. more mid's , more open . the 2018 muddy, would be difficult to struggle and record.
