Why do you get a fever when you're sick? - Christian Moro

- Discover what happens in your body when you have a fever and why its role in our immune response remains a mystery to scientists.
--
There are many mysteries around fever, but we do know that all mammals, some birds and even a few invertebrate and plant species feel fever’s heat. It has persisted for over 600 million years of evolution. But it has a significant cost: for every degree increase in temperature, there’s a 12.5% increase in energy required. So, why and how does your body produce a fever? Christian Moro investigates.

My physiology of microorganisms professor actually said this a couple of days ago. He said "Since the temperature optimum for microorganisms in the body [including pathogens] is 37˚C, the body increases the temperature to higher levels to kill some of them off. That's why you shouldn't suppress a fever". Seems like he was wrong after watching this.

I guess that's why people say, "Starve a cold, feed a fever." I wonder if there's any real reason to eat less when you have a cold. ---> I looked it up and there's no reason to starve a cold. Good nutrition is important for the body to heal.
Digestion is energy intensive in its own right. I think not eating during a fever is a good idea (and comes naturally).
There is a video to explain that, too :) ua-cam.com/video/hYxDuTfrP2Q/v-deo.html
@@HiAdrian no.
fasting allows your body to heal faster, reason why animals do not eat when they are sick. Our body’s are equipped for fasting & it also can reverse type 2 diabetes despite what doctors do by constantly spiking your insulin with insulin shots.

you can do it too, the trick is not looking anything but the mosquito which your eyes will lock on to it's every movement and make it seem slower than normal. this may take some practiced but many people have done it.

Man, this really came in handy. I'm literally going through a fever right now.... brings some comfort to know that this whole fever thing is somehow good for me.🖤
The way I see this is that, our bodies for the most part, doesn't need external help when fighting its battles, but sometimes, due to our body's unparalleled dedication to fighting off a virus, it could actually kill itself (destructive temperature levels) and this is where doctors come in to override our bodies untiring natural defense.

I love the illustrations. Simple and easy to understand
In Egypt mothers call the sweat that comes after fever (Afia sweat meaning sweat of health )which is considered as a sign of improvement
The highest fever I ever had was about 8 weeks ago and it was 106.3 I never had a fever that high before so I waited a little while and took some aspirin to try to lower my fever but it didn't help and an hour later my temperature was still 106 so I went to the hospital. Especially because before that, I was getting like 3 or 4 fevers a day for about a week and they were all around 104, 105 and 106 so I had to go to the hospital. Like I said, I've never had fevers as high as 105 and 106. It was scary and I felt like my brain was literally cooking and I was pouring sweat but getting the chills here and there too. I'm still in the hospital for those fevers. I was told I was starting to go into shock and my body was beginning to shut down so I guess it's a really good thing that I went to the hospital when I did. But yeah, I had pneumonia and severe sepsis. I'm slowly getting better but I still have a month and a half of IV antibiotics to get to finish treating me before I can go home.
Highest fever I've ever had was about 104°F and it sucked so bad. It was the flu
Glad you went to the hospital! I hope you have a healthy recovery. :)
Woah, you could boil a water with that heat.
Sepsis is one situation in which the fever must be reduced. 106 is the maximum limit of a healthy fever. Good that you went to the hospital with 106
I had 101.6 yesterday

TED-ED: Why do you get a fever when you’re sick?
Me: Why do I get a fever every time there is a big test?
Stresssssss
Thanks Ted Ed. I was just asking this question to everyone around me for the past half year that if fever is good (inflammatory response), why we suppress it? Thanks very much, you cleared it in 5 minutes :)
There's conflicting opinions on whether or not to let a mild fever ride out or to take medicine, but everyone agrees that fevers can be so darn unpleasant! With modern medicine (assuming it's available), why just not choose to feel better? We have all these other medications designed to help fight bacterial infections, and the body takes care of (mild/non life-threatening) viral infections whether or not a fever is present. There's little evidence to say that supressing a fever is a bad thing, but there is also little evidence to say that letting a fever run it's course is a good thing. So really, it's personal preference if you have the means.
I'm suffering from fever and you uploaded this video... great timing

My bosses don’t understand that a certain medication that I take causes hot flashes that drain me and make me dizzy. Not an excuse to ever stop working if I do have a moment, but it’d be nice to stuff their thick skulls since it happens daily.
The other day I had a fever. That was the worst shivering I ever felt. I only had the fever for around 9-10 hours after I slept. I actually don't know what's the reason of that fever, I just started shivering so bad that I can even tell myself that I will be having a fever within the next minutes even though my body is not that hot yet. This 'short term' kind of fever is kinda common for me but that's still the worst shivers I had.
