  • Dig into the two main ways we fight the viruses that cause the common cold, and find out if it’s possible to create a cure.
    --
    On average, adults catch more than 150 colds throughout their lives. Even with similar symptoms, the cause could be different each time. Common colds are caused by at least 8 different families of virus, each of which can have its own subtypes. How can so many different viruses cause the same illness? And is a cure even possible? Explore the two main strategies we employ to fight viruses.
    Directed by Anton Bogaty.

    As a retired health director, I can't stress enough how important it is to get outside and expose yourself to these minor bugs. A long time without exposure could create an infection that is more severe, since they have had enough time to replicate and mutate.

      I think thats a double edged sword. By going out and getting yourself willingly infected, you are risking infecting those who are incapable of surviving it and you are helping the virus spread by being yet another vector, thus helping it “replicate and mutate”

    According to your explanation that there many viruses that causes the cold, and the symptoms are mostly a immune response….. it almost seems as if that “the common cold” is an ecological niche that viruses can fill.
    So hypothetically if we did one day eliminate the rhino virus and all it’s strains… would some other species just evolve to be more dominant in that niche?

    A great great *remedy* that I have learned from my days with common cold is taking frequent naps. During nap, body gets time to recover, combined with healthy food, chances of recovering even faster becomes better. Of course and only when this remedy seems failing, I go by taking medicines.

    • @varyolla435
      @varyolla435 Рік тому

      Everything you just noted does absolutely nothing to prevent you from becoming infected in the first place. Ergo they are "treating the symptoms" after the fact as opposed to proactively trying to inhibit your catching the illness. If however you socially distance around anyone who appears sick + wash your hands regularly + and mask during times of the year when these infectious illnesses are prevalent = your chances of getting sick will be significantly reduced and hence you will not need "remedies" which really only treat symptoms rather than affect resolution. 🤔

    • @ahmermirza
      @ahmermirza Рік тому

      @@varyolla435 Yes, you need remedies when you have already got infected and the preventable measures you've mentioned works to some extent, all facts laid, I'm only bothered about the "necessary" exposure they often recommend as crutial that may "train" the immune system somehow for future infections.

    • @varyolla435
      @varyolla435 Рік тому +2

      @@ahmermirza In other words you do not understand and that lends you to incredulity-based rationalizations.
      So one more time. Treating symptoms is not a "remedy" as it does not help facilitate your immune system eliminate the organism in question. All you are doing is masking the symptoms - not unlike taking ibuprofen for a muscle ache. The muscle inflammation is still there waiting for your body to repair whatever the damage is = you simply dulled the pain for a time.
      As to exposure = that is how your immune system works. It is simple exposure -------> reaction. Your body defeats microorganisms by generating specific antibodies against them. For that to happen = you must first be exposed so that your B-Cells have a "blueprint" to create those IgG antibodies which matchup to the morphology of the organism.
      Moral of the story: it's simple really. If you catch the illness you are exposed to the full-strength organism which means you risk the most serious side effects. If however you peremptorily expose yourself via vaccination - you still generate antibodies the same as if you caught the illness except = because the vaccine is weaker your potential side effects are exponentially less.
      So which is the better route of exposure then as you are "at risk" no matter what?? Ponder that. 🤔

    One time back during my Junior High School(years ago), I had the common cold for 2 months. It just wouldn't go away, it was the weirdest thing ever. My doctor gave me an antiviral drug, and immediately it went away, but after the second dose, it came back. It lasted about 3 days after taking the drugs, and finally I was all better again. I just could get better, I don't know what the heck happened.

    • @varyolla435
      @varyolla435 Рік тому +7

      First is antivirals are not used for common colds - and colds don't last 2 months. So you had something else going on for. Next is it takes longer for any medication to work than 24 hrs. Infections do not simply "go away" for a day or two to pop back up. Typically it takes several days for any medication to have a real impact.
      So it sounds like you had more than a typical cold and your body was already trying to clear it but either was unable - or you developed a "secondary infection" as can happen. The immune system being consumed with fighting one organism sometimes sees others cause subsequent infections. So any medicine you took may have begun to make an impact after a day or so but did not fully begin to work until several days later as is typical.

      Well there are medicines and remedies that claim to boost immunity only problem is a hyperactive immune system which is faster is more likely target it's own host cells I. E. Our's one way is to grow or create an extra thymus but human body has no space for it

    • @waterunderthebridge7950
      @waterunderthebridge7950 Рік тому +3

      @@avirajsinghmehta1857 I don’t know where you’re getting your info from but getting a second thymus isn’t going to somehow magically solve all your problems.
      The thymus’ main functionality consists of the selection and tolerance induction of T-lymphocytes. However, it doesn’t actually _produce_ any immune cells on its own, that’s more the bone marrow’s job. Besides, hyperplasia of the thymus is also markedly found in autoimmune diseases (most strikingly in myasthenia gravis) making any notion of just randomly giving someone a second thymus a pretty horrible idea.
      Cellular and humoral immunity is a very complex and delicate system consisting of many layers of interlocking checks and controls and “improving” a system that has evolved to maximize fitness for eons already artificially is bound to be a very difficult task. Even disregarding whether the body has space for extra organs (which, mind you, it has plenty of that we use when (auto-)transplanting organs such as kidneys, endocrine organs etc.)), just randomly inserting exogenous tissue is a surefire way to end common colds along with the life of the patient.

    Also very effective against the cold: a healthy diet, Vitamin D3 supplement if you live in regions with little sunlight during winter and plenty of physical activity. Especially the D3 supplement did a lot for me: I still get the cold but it just last a couple of days instead of weeks.

      Totally agree, along with daily zinc supplements too. I've read a lot of well respected research on vitamin D supplements, and other than the effect it has on our immune system, vitamin D can reduce the risk of certain cancers, dementia. It really is a wonderful supplement to take. It's one of those supplements as well than can give you more health benefits when taken in stronger doses from what I've read with the research.

      @@TallysVids Doctor John Cambell on youtube did some videos on D3.
      On the dosis: In the past I was taking the commonly suggested 1000 units of D3 as it is possible to harm yourself with too much of it. Some time later I spoke to a doctor in my neighborhood about it. She told me to get myself a D3 bloodtest to find the level in the blood. I did and it turned out it was only at about 1/3 of what it was supposed to be. I was advised to take 20.000 units for 4 weeks to increase the level. I did and after said weeks the next test came in at the correct level. I now take 5000 units along with K2 daily during the dark time of the year to keep the bloodlevel at a sufficient level.

      @@thehuman2861 No = it doesn't...... Perhaps you should first learn the science and forgo all the assumptions - just saying.
      p.s. - viruses and bacteria evolved as we did on a planet that is = mostly water + which is subject to changes in temperatures.
      So can you honestly believe that variations in how hot or cold your bath in matters..... A pathogen which can infect and colonize you can withstand both water + temperatures which you can.
      When you wash your hands etc. you are "mechanically removing" organisms from your skin. The temp of the water and even the soap do not so much as kill the microorganisms as help you scrub them off. Your problem therefore is = contact + inhalation around others - as is you are exposing yourself to be infected and/or you may simply be colonized already.
