The surprising reason you feel awful when you're sick - Marco A. Sotomayor

- What actually makes you feel sick? Discover how your immune system and proteins called cytokines respond to infections.
--
It starts with a tickle in your throat that becomes a cough. Your muscles begin to ache, you grow irritable, and you lose your appetite. It’s official: you’ve got the flu. It’s logical to assume that this miserable medley of symptoms is the result of the infection coursing through your body - but is that really the case? Marco A. Sotomayor explains what’s actually making you feel sick.

Im sick today and Im here to be grateful for my body. Man immune system rocks
*3:09** amount of details in these animations is just insane.* Look closely - after our patient coughed bacteria to those three guys, it bounced out of second guy onto the first guy (meaning, immune system of the second guy is still good and able to fight) but then it bounced back to the second guy, meaning that immune system of the first guy is way stronger. On the other hand, the immune system of the third guy was the worst as both of the bacteria he took right away and nothing bounced.
And all that secret information delivered in just a second of this incredible animation, that most of the people won't even notice.
*Hats off, TED.*
The first guy even backed off after our patient coughed, the detail of this amination is top notch.
What are you talking about you nitwit. A good immune system doesn't mean the virus bounces off you like some kind of tiny pogo-stick jumping maniac, you still absorb the virus, it just doesn't do as much damage. Certainly the bacteria doesn't survey your body, and turn around if it's too harsh a landscape to look for a new home like some kind of intergalactic species searching for something resembling their homeplanet that was consumed by a nearby star years ago, god damn

Sometimes the day before a cold or flu starts I just feel upset, depressed and/or irritable for no reason, then the next day I get more definitive symptoms. The brain seems to be the first to know.
Lighting a candle for everyone out there living with autoimmune and\or mystery disease.
Yes. My poor wife has lupus. It took us a few heartaches to know.. every time she got pregnant her body would attack the poor baby.. she had 5 miscarriages...

Rheumatoid arthritis. But then i went hiking in iceland and had to cross deep icy rivers multiple times. My rheumtiid arthritis immediately went into remission after that first river crossing
So your own immune system effects you psychologically making you irritable and sad. Perhaps this is to make you steer clear of people to prevent the spread of infection?
duuuude
nice thought, mindblown
makes sense since our brains evolved to be social and cooperarative
But there is no evolutionary advantage to preventing others from getting sick unless they are blood relatives.
Amphiuma III i don't know about that. If there are more sick people, the more likely the rest are to get infected. Plus why do you say that about blood relatives. Our brains have evolved with societal cooperation in mind. Why would this way of helping others not be a thing? Not to mention evolution is simply surviving organisms passing on traits. It has nothing to do with blood relatives as such.
Anyone else watching this when they are sick?

I wonder if the irritability is a tribal survival mechanism to make other people avoid you, so the infection doesn't spread.
+Shawn Ravenfire Or it's just people being irritated because they want to do something against being in pain, and not able to do anything about it. People are generally like that, if they know what to do to make themselves feel better, they pull themselves together and focus on doing that, if not, they wish they did and start to hate everything around them.
i think is even more primitive, it may be about being more agressive so that predators dont single you out for being ill and eat you
Bob is sick!!!!! Maday!Maday!
I'd conjecture that it's mostly just the unpleasantness of feeling ill. Any kind of stress tends to make us more irritable, and a constant bombardment with unpleasant stimuli is _definitely_ stressful. If that ended up being an evolutionary advantage on top, I doubt it'd be that big of one. You could be right though!
Oh wow very interesting theory

Because you find this interesting and aren't forced to do it, also animations make everything better
Makes since thxs
It uses more senses than regular old text books, so that's a plus. It also visualizes the topics in a way that is most appealing and easy to wrap your head around rather than accurate. The presenter and the presentation are also paced in a way that keeps your attention up which is something that, sadly, only few teachers know how to do. It also reduces the topic down to its most important parts without handling the basics of the topic, which most of the time constitutes the boring shit you have to repeat all the time in order to remember.
So, what these presentations do is reduce the topic to the things that are most interesting and important about it, which enables you to learn the most fascinating things about science without having to get through the boring shit needed to actually get to the conclusion yourself.
This makes it possible for these neat little videos to achieve what many education systems around the world sadly do not, which is make education fun and show how fascinating the things education gets us to knowing can be.
Just my two cents.
I think that it's also because, since you're doing this of your own choice, you become more invested in what's happening. I'd guess that's also why jobs become less fun even if it's regarding something you love to do.
Let's say you're an artist who loves to paint who sells paintings for a living. However, after a while of doing that as a job, you don't find painting as enjoyable as it was before. Even though it's a thing that you used to love doing, being technically forced to do it all the time dampens the enjoyment in the activity. However, that doesn't happen when you're not painting as a job, even though you might technically be doing it for the same length of time. Not to mention the ability to freely take a break whenever you feel like it isn't really allowed in a job much (especially not in an art-related job where you essentially need to make things 24/7 to scrape by if you're a normal person).
Basically, having to do stuff makes that stuff less enjoyable, even if doing it of your own choice results in you spending the same or greater amount of time doing that stuff.
Nightcore Fan its because you prefer usefull information you will actualy use in life unlike algebra knowing this may actualy help you in life.(sorry about speling im too ill to care).

I contracted a parasite from the Rosemont MovieCo theatre in Illinois in 2007 and almost died from dehydration. I couldn't keep ANYTHING in so I just lay on the couch until suddenly I went weak and my instincts kicked in and I crawled on my hands and knees to the bathroom and drank out of the sink sip by sip until I could stand.
I went from "I just feel really bad" to my brain screaming at me "You're about to die! GO!!"
It was an interesting experience.

My theory; we feel awful when we are sick to not only aid in eliminating bacteria/viruses but also so we KNOW we are sick and something is wrong and can go lay down and help our body with medicines/water, also so others know we are sick and will be careful not to get affected as well.
Or life gives up on you for a while.

I've never been this sick before from the flu. I got a flu shot on Tuesday and felt bad for 2 days but I felt okay the next day. However, the after that I started coughing, spiked a fever, muscle aches, and headache. It's been over a week now and I'm so fatigued and am still coughing.
Must have been a different strain.
takes a couple weeks before the shot is effective.
It always start with a cough. Man i feel the same since Monday. What amazed me in all of these symptoms is the lack of appetite. Since it does hit me i feel lazy and get tired quickly. The only difference between you and i is that I’ve not taken the flu shot.
There's your answer - my Mum was effectively dead 50mins after a flu shot. No pulse, no breathing. Fortunately Paramedics were in the next street and revived her. A week in hospital.
I too am the sickest I've ever been for the longest period of time with this flu. Slowly, slowly going but only after 2+ weeks. I have the flu shot every year, so god knows what this would have been like without it.

This is a great video. Far too often we want relief from "problems" without knowing the extent of what will happen when we do that, or why they are there in the first place.
If you are able to recognize the complexity and organization of the human body, you will have less interest in controlling its processes, and more interest in helping it do the things that it is so innately capable of doing on its own.
