So there’s a short answer and a long answer. Disclaimer: I’m not a statistician but a quantitative social scientist by training, The short answer is that yes, George Carlin is correct: if you think about the average person you know, 50 percent of people will be dumber. That’s because IQ (what we consider to be a method of measuring intelligence) theoretically exhibits a normal distribution. This means its mean (or average), median (middle score), and mode (most frequent score) are equal, or sufficiently close to equal. Because the mean is directly in the middle, 50% of people literally are dumber than average! But here’s the longer answer: George Carlin asked us to think about the average person we know. But our social circles are far from random and far from representative. Think about it: by and large, we tend to associate with people whose intelligence, socioeconomic status, and personal values are similar to ours. Not only do we prefer these individuals, but the environments we select predispose us to meeting people who are similar to ourselves. Since Redditors (and, by proxy, their social circles) tend to be smarter, younger, and wealthier than average, the average person we know probably isn’t so average in terms of the total population, since our circles are biased. Now let’s also discuss IQ for a bit. There’s something called the Flynn effect, named after its observer, Janes Flynn, that refers to the phenomenon of an ever-increasing average IQ score. Thus, IQ is becoming increasingly non-normal in its distribution, rendering George Carlin’s quote incorrect. Finally, to equate IQ with intelligence is actually quite assumptive. Traditionally, psychologists define intelligence as the ability of an organism to adapt to its environment. So while a traditional IQ test can measure adaptation to the traditional Western education system, it’s not great at capturing other forms of intelligence, such as musical intelligence. back when jbox were the most popular fan scans, i remember reading the French language fan translations, the english fan scans, and the official release. I think even seeing different interpretations of the source material is important, and any idea being represented differently depending on the language massively impacts the ideas at play in a story that places a large emphasis on the world it tries to build.
Stephen Paul, the Viz Translator, frequently appears as a guest on The One Piece Podcast. He happens to address his reasoning on translating Two Piece in Episode 707. They begin talking about it around an hour and 15 minutes in if you’re interested.
As somebody who reads a lot of classic literature, translation is a huge thing. Reading War and Peace can be a breeze in one translation or a slog in another
My natural conclusion of what was meant with "Where is it. Some of it is here too. Ugh, I am so close." was that Wano had a poneglyph, which was maybe the last or second last one Big Mom needed. That is why she is so disgruntled, from being so close to finding out the location of the one piece.
theres an inferrence by the fanbase that One Piece is literally "In One Piece" or is One Single Item, but it isn't. It's described by Roger as "I left everything there." It's actually "Hitotsunagi no Dai-hihou", the Great Treasure (with some ambiguous stuff in the hitotsunagi part) with the furigana showing it as pronounced "Wan Pisu".
I don't think the Two Piece is real but seeing the Gum Gum fruit getting retconned has made it clear that nothing is off the table right now and I kinda don't care.
The One Piece is a treasure that can only be found at the end of the Grand Line, this was stated before on the story and there is no reason for it to change. It's both Roger's and someone else who visited the island before him (maybe Joyboy or someone who hasn't been mentioned yet from the void century). More importantly, I believe that Foxy will make his true return on the manga and will be very very epic.
My bet is that the one piece is on laugh tale and the ancient weapons are deeply connected to it in a way that could by sheer technicality count as part of it by the connection they have to the ancient kingdom however as it is a technicality i wouldn't count them as the same treasure especially since shirahoshi is a person and not something like a ship which would make possessing the treasure very awkward for the themes of the story
The ‘other part’ of One Piece Big Mom was talking about was Pluton. It’s not so much ‘part’ of One Piece, but it and the other Ancient Weapons are the keys needed to get the treasure. This is why the Roger Pirates were ‘too early’ when they got to Laughing Tale; the conditions were not right to claim the weapons (Shirahoshi not being born yet was especially important). BM had that thought in the first place because of what she learned from her old captain, Rocks
Honestly though, anime and manga fans have to be largely illiterate anyways. Especially on Twitter. I see every day people tweeting shit like "Oda's biggest lie" and it's Luffy saying he'd come back and beat Big Mom after he beat Kaidou. Like, all Luffy is doing is saying he wants to do it. He can't control Law and Kid. They take every word printed on the page as a decree of truth from Oda himself. Characters? Having opinions? No quality of translation is going to fix that.
The internet's done this to all of them. This nonsense happens among all these internet fan-bases. At least the ones based around cartoony art. It's insufferable I hope Elon Nukes Twitter
Damn man. This just reminded me of how much my mother used to be mean to me all the time and put me down. I'd tell her I'd take the trash out before I went to bed, but then the electricity would go out because she didn't pay the bill (which happened more than it should of) and we would have to go to a friend's house and stay there, then we would get back and she would just resume like none of that happened and scream in my face why I didn't take the trash before I went to bed. Like, I couldn't control all that happening in between all of that. :(
Build-up sets expectations. Big Mom vs Luffy was set up since Fishman Island so it's not unreasonable to assume that Luffy would beat Big Mom one day. It's unsatisfying when a long running story thread doesn't have pay off. Just as it would be very unsatisfying if Kid finds the One Piece instead of Luffy. Just my opinion.
@@FredericJohnsen Not like a panel from the end of Fish-Man when he's calling her and saying he'll beat her up to claim the island as her territory. A panel from, I think, right near the beginning of Roof Piece where he says he's going to get her after Kaidou. I get that part of it. I wish Luffy went gear 6 and dominated them both. It's also kind of lame when you have big characters who don't get to do anything. Imagine luffy beating King and Queen and Big Mom and Kaidou and Black Maria while he's at it while everyone sits around with their thumbs in their asses. Luffy has a slightly longer history with Big Mom but I'd argue a deeper emotional line with Kaidou. The end goal of the Pirate Ninja Mink Samurai alliance being to defeat Kaidou and liberate Wano. The Big Mom Fish-Man thing exists, sure, but basically the entire New World was leading up to Kaidou vs Luffy. From Punk Hazard all the way here. The only reason Big Mom was even encountered when she was was because Jack weakened the whole of Zou looking for Raizo and Momonosuke and Sanji ended up going with Bege who, I'm sure, would not have been able to get in without that being the case. If things didn't go how they did, Luffy would have come back for Big Mom eventually. Hell, I think his goal clearly being retrieving Sanji and leaving instead of challenging Big Mom (except when Bege clues them in on the assassination attempt but it was pretty low risk) seems pretty clear to me. If Big Mom were the priority I'd think he'd take the whole crew, especially Zoro and fucking Law. It's clear that the Momonosuke and the plan to take out Kaidou is the number 1 priority. And that's all before they arrive in Wano. Before Luffy meets Tama and sees the abject squalor the people suffer in, before they learn about Oden, and before the raid. On the roof, Luffy takes the entirety of Wano onto his back and intends to defeat the wickedness crushing the people of the country himself, Kaidou. If he fought Big Mom and let Law and Kid or, God forbid, Zoro beat Kaidou, I think sure as hell that would be way weaker. I wish he could have beat them both but if you have to choose one there I think it's Kaidou every time.
With a world full of devil fruit powers I have the idea that it's a time machine and Luffy ends up being in a time loop where he is ace's dad being the one piece to the multiple pieces thus died happy. I got this idea from when I seen episode in Sabaody Archipelago when Luffy was given a disguise 🥸 looking like Roger everytime more.
love the video, good stuff regarding talking about the different translations. couple things though: the ponelglyph in alabasta only said where the pluton is and what it is, not that its IN alabasta, it just gave info on pluton, secondly when oden reached laugh tale with roger he wrote down that on that day they found out about "the will of d, the ancient weapons, and the missing void history" so i surmise that to mean whatever they found on laugh tale told them about the ancient weapons, technically you could sort of say then that "part of what one piece talks about" is in wano, i definitely agree though aside from this that therent arent "two pieces" the one piece is all there but it gives info about stuff outside of laugh tale
I think that the One Piece is going to be a big pile of everything. Gold, treasures, art, books, blueprints, even bits of tech that have beebn long since forgotten. All this and more, in one place.
What an awesome video, thanks a lot for this! As a dedicated One Piece Fan from Germany, I absolutely depend on Fan-Scanlation Websites. The Official Volumes in Germany are released every 3 months or so, and are also fairly behind compared to the original release. Mistakes in Translation can always happen and I could never judge that hard over some minor hick ups that may occur there and then. I'm super grateful for the work they put into it just out of sheer love for the series and especially TCBScans uploads new chapters very fast and in high quality.
I can confidently say that you, super eyepatch wolf, pirating, and fan scans got me into reading and then buying one piece and several other manga series.
The thing is, I'm pretty sure we already know what the One Piece is gonna be. Clover dropped the hugest hint during Robin's flashback about it. It's gonna be hard evidence of Joy Boy's civilization that the World Government completely erased during the void century. Whether that comes in the form of treasure or a complimentary coffee mug, who knows. It's certainly going to be something that reveals the void century and joy boy's country, maybe also explain why the ancient weapons were created. Oden's flashback pretty much all but confirms this. Now the question is, is the One Piece itself Joyboy's city or is it a tangible singular object? Maybe it truly is treasure, but then treasure in the form of gold and jewels? It's only really something we'll know when they get to Laugh Tale. Going by the Big Mom line, all I really thought was that in her desperation as she's falling she conjures up a thought about part of the treasure perhaps being in Wano, which due to her intelligence network that we know is crazy advanced she would probably know about the poneglyphs origin being in Wano. Of course I'm extrapolating there and am in no way saying that's what actually happened, but it was enough for me to personally feel satisfied with the line of dialogue. I'm 100% on the one piece thing though. I won't edit this comment, you can come back and laugh at it if it's incorrect.
Wow, I got goodebumps at the end there. Whitebeard said it himself. "Someday a man will appear, carrying all those decades of history on his back and challenge the world to a fight." That man stands before us now, $1000 in hand, carrying on the will of fan translations. Stephen Paul and his translators all fear this immense battle he’s just started. Once someone finds the true meaning of big mom’s words, the entire world will be turned upside down… and someone WILL find it. THE ONE PIIIIIECE… THE ONE PIECE IS REEEEAAAALL
My position: One Piece is in One Piece, Shanks has been keeping tabs on Luffy during his whole adventure, Luffy & Shanks, along with their fleets will battle, Luffy wins the right to the One Piece(not necessarily the battle, maybe he earns Shank's respect as a true pirate and gets to keep the Straw Hat), we find the One Piece, Luffy leaves in on Laughtale to continue the dreams of all Pirates. Fin
I'd consider myself to have a good grasp on Japanese for a non-native speaker (better than most amateur translators), and when I saw the panel in question, my initial reaction was that VIZ's translation was more accurate and TCB was probably over-editorializing. It's the most natural way of translating that line *in isolation*... but context makes a world of difference, and when you consider the monologue as a whole, TCB's wording makes more sense.
I feel the opposite. It's just like BGE says. "engage with the series as it is people, not as you want it to be". I think TCB, this video author, and you, are just committed to the idea of the One Piece treasure being literally one object and not something more encompassing. The speech is about the treasure, and the line refers to the treasure. If she thinks part of it is in Wano, that just means that the treasure we ALREADY KNOW is hidden in Wano, the Ancient Weapon Pluton, is part of the treasure. This is much more of a sensible leap of logic to make than "the line that is literally big mom asking if part of it is here in wano doesn't mean what it says, and actually she's wondering if poneglpyhs or something are here.", a gigantic stretch.
The funny thing when I read the Viz translation was my interpretation. I didn't interpret it as a separate treasure, but as the idea that Wano holds answers (essentially, the way TCB did). The idea of separate treasure pieces has never crossed my mind beore this video.
I don't believe in two piece or the treasure being split up in that sense but if it is traditional treasure I don't find it unbelievable that Roger Pirate members took souvenirs like gold coins or things. Could definitely be floating around in that way
My personal belief is that the One Piece is something that threatens the World Government, information or a super-weapon being the first two. It seems to me it's heavily tied up in the Will of D. and the mystery of the Poneglyphs. Both of which could be what Big Mama is referring to when she says "are some of the answers in this country too?"
My unimportant, gut-feeling guess about how to interpret the sentence:“does it have something to do with this land if Wano?” That, or Oda is putting in a wrong implication that will be followed by more postulations about the nature of One Piece specifically to get the readers thinking about what what it is, on the off chance that they aren’t wondering already. In other words, we’re so far into the endgame that it’s worth questioning what “One Piece” is, both for the readers and characters.
I've been pretty open in saying that I compare both translations of multiple manga series. The JJK community is actually a lot harsher towards VIZ when compared to one piece, but when it comes to one piece I usually like bits and pieces of both versions myself. Neither is perfect, but both are still good quality.
I don't believe in the two piece but I believe Momonosuke is Pluton since he can talk to and command Zunesha like Shirahoshi, the ancient weapon Neptune, can talk to and command the Sea Kings.
I think that the part of One Piece in Wano is just Pluton because you need the ancient weapons to get One Piece. After all, Roger needed Poseidon before he could access the One Piece.
this is completely unrelated to your video here except that it relates to One Piece and fan content: that "the one pieeece... the one piece is reaaaaaaaaaaaaal" meme, I totally thought was you, but it turned out to be Patrick Fabian in a rare moment of sounding exactly like you
I really don't think that the Vis translation is somehow unambiguous. In the Vis version we are not given the impression that Big Mom thinks it is in Wano, we are just given the impression that she is frustrated with Rigers lack of clarity in both versions.
This two piece they’re talking about is a load of crap. The era where there will be a TWO PIECE?? YEAAA RIGHT! THE DREAMS OF CRITICAL READERS…WILL NEVER DIIIIIIIIIE!! AM I RIGHT?!?
i read it that the ancient weapons should be considered part of the treasure. Pluton is in Wano, so "part" of the One Piece is in Wano.
I don't think the 2 Piece treasure is real necessarily, but Wano probably is the key to the One Piece related to opening the borders. I don't think it is a tangible treasure in the sense that a normal person can hold the treasure, but probably related to the islands of One PIece being connected somehow and by the end, most if not all of the islands will be connected physically. One Piece as in all the islands are one piece.
I agree. But let's give every translator our highest respect. I am currently taking a translation course from German into English. These two languages are quite similar and even though it can be tough as shit to translate texts in a way to get meanings and connotations correct.
Here's my thoughts, as somebody with ABSOUTELY NO knowledge about One Piece. What if it WAS in One Piece, but no longer is? I mean, Gold Roger dies years ago, right? Who's to say when Luffy and the gang finally reach their goal, that they're the first to witness what happens to it?
Guys, hear me out… the one piece is only ONE PIECE of the full treasure. Whatever it is that roger left behind, the one piece is the most integral part of that stash.
I like the theory that the One Piece is the ancient kingdom erased during the Void Century. Which solves Big Mom's dialogue by making the meaning "is part of the ancient kingdom here...?" But yes I agree with your overall point that people get too attached to their theories/interpretations to the detriment of community discussion. Ultimately the ONLY thing which is authoritative is what actually shows up in the manga for us, and every theory is hot air until confirmed in the manga. If all people care about is whether the theories are right, then they should just read the manga and shut the community out. Theorizing is a fun and engaging excercise, and allows for critique of the series as well (a solid theory was that Momo would have a big character moment holding up Onigashima in a parallel to Oden holding up all of the Scabbards... but that turned out wrong, and the series is worse off for giving Momo NOTHING in the climax of the arc despite wasting so much page space building up to that conclusion).
yes, TCB's translation is "Very different". it's also incorrect. "engage with the series as it is people, not as you want it to be" he says, after 20 minutes talking about why the literal translation is wrong and the TCB translation where they made stuff up is better because it aligns with what he wants it to be.
I hate that the official viz says zolo. Youd think 1000 chapters in they could at least recognize a character. :/ but what if thats been the intention the whole time? His name is actually ZOLO but luffy and the crew were jusy too embarrassed to ask afyer all these years. Genious plottwist by oda.
and here i am dealing with people who believe zolo err zoro has hidden eye powers. i miss the days when mangastream graces us with lines like "crucify and chill"

THE TWO PIECE IS REALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!
I don't even know what the theory is, BUT I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL.
back when jbox were the most popular fan scans, i remember reading the French language fan translations, the english fan scans, and the official release.
Do you have a link?
@@diccchocolate416 That link starts when they begin talking about it, though the whole episode is great if you want any more insight.
@@SlickLH what link?
@@diccchocolate416 Dang. I sent it, but it just got removed by UA-cam. It’s a measure to prevent spammers/bots.
One piece podcast defends yamato is trans when she isn't
As somebody who reads a lot of classic literature, translation is a huge thing. Reading War and Peace can be a breeze in one translation or a slog in another
The two piece is real
We see Nami wearing it multiple times on the hot islands
Nice foreshadowing goda a genius
My natural conclusion of what was meant with "Where is it. Some of it is here too. Ugh, I am so close." was that Wano had a poneglyph, which was maybe the last or second last one Big Mom needed. That is why she is so disgruntled, from being so close to finding out the location of the one piece.
i read it that the ancient weapons should be considered part of the treasure. Pluton is in Wano, so "part" of the One Piece is in Wano.
theres an inferrence by the fanbase that One Piece is literally "In One Piece" or is One Single Item, but it isn't.
Sad but understandable.
That pic in the end made me laugh more than it should have
The One Piece is a treasure that can only be found at the end of the Grand Line, this was stated before on the story and there is no reason for it to change.
I used to work on One Pace, but had to stop due to college work, it's a great project, and I hope it can continue!
We must do our part to hold the line against madness.
Nice thumbnail!
Thanks brother, good to see ya. 😎 Art credit to my boy Kaiju-kun, naturally.
I really like the thumbnail!
God damn I'm glad you're not writing the manga because that shit sounds absolutely awful.
Funny to think that there actually was a triple agent in the wholecake island arc.
so u were right but just got the wrong person
always happy to have a video from BGE
Nothing better than 60 minutes of Pure BGE Autism in my Subscription Feed to start my day.
love the video, good stuff regarding talking about the different translations. couple things though: the ponelglyph in alabasta only said where the pluton is and what it is, not that its IN alabasta, it just gave info on pluton, secondly when oden reached laugh tale with roger he wrote down that on that day they found out about "the will of d, the ancient weapons, and the missing void history" so i surmise that to mean whatever they found on laugh tale told them about the ancient weapons, technically you could sort of say then that "part of what one piece talks about" is in wano, i definitely agree though aside from this that therent arent "two pieces" the one piece is all there but it gives info about stuff outside of laugh tale
👁👁He's finally covering One Pace 👁👁
There is no two piece. Also, Nate's resolve to disprove dumb theories reminds me of Bojack's dad vowing to duel anyone who badmouthed his novel.
I make sure to read the official release every week despite reading the tcb translation earlier. I have a shounen jump subscription!
This is incredible thank you bge
Love seeing you back man
I can confidently say that you, super eyepatch wolf, pirating, and fan scans got me into reading and then buying one piece and several other manga series.
What a refreshing and nuanced take
Wow, I got goodebumps at the end there. Whitebeard said it himself. "Someday a man will appear, carrying all those decades of history on his back and challenge the world to a fight."
That man stands before us now, $1000 in hand, carrying on the will of fan translations.
Great video mr bestguy. Indeed. Lets 頑張りましょうね and 語彙力を増やそう
it's always a good day when BGE uploads after half a year
My position: One Piece is in One Piece, Shanks has been keeping tabs on Luffy during his whole adventure, Luffy & Shanks, along with their fleets will battle, Luffy wins the right to the One Piece(not necessarily the battle, maybe he earns Shank's respect as a true pirate and gets to keep the Straw Hat), we find the One Piece, Luffy leaves in on Laughtale to continue the dreams of all Pirates.
I just thought about you several hours ago. And now you present this video. Wow
Everybody who makes a theory on reddit about a piece of fiction should sacrifice 1K to the ocean if they are wrong. This needs to be the new standard.
Didn’t even realize this was a theory - thought this video was about debunking the idea of a sequel series. Calling bullshit on both.
The funny thing when I read the Viz translation was my interpretation. I didn't interpret it as a separate treasure, but as the idea that Wano holds answers (essentially, the way TCB did). The idea of separate treasure pieces has never crossed my mind beore this video.
Absolutely amazing Job BGE.
I just assumed it meant a poneglyph(the guide to the One Piece) was in wano
My unimportant, gut-feeling guess about how to interpret the sentence:“does it have something to do with this land if Wano?”
That, or Oda is putting in a wrong implication that will be followed by more postulations about the nature of One Piece specifically to get the readers thinking about what what it is, on the off chance that they aren’t wondering already.
A really good topic and great arguments.
After all, Roger needed Poseidon before he could access the One Piece.
this is completely unrelated to your video here except that it relates to One Piece and fan content:
that "the one pieeece... the one piece is reaaaaaaaaaaaaal" meme, I totally thought was you, but it turned out to be Patrick Fabian in a rare moment of sounding exactly like you
I really don't think that the Vis translation is somehow unambiguous.
I love whenever you talk anything OP and this one is no different thanks for this plus we're SO HIGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!

i read it that the ancient weapons should be considered part of the treasure. Pluton is in Wano, so "part" of the One Piece is in Wano. THE TWO PIECE ISNT REALLLLL. Great video, king
It's gotta be red line destruction theory. Pluton is needed for that.
I read weekly and somehow missed this whole debacle. I thought Two Piece meme was a hypothetical sequel to One Piece.
I'm still waiting for the Onigashima raid to fail.
I used to think hiluluk was part of mads and he was in it to cure his sister kureha which I also thought they're related
I agree. But let's give every translator our highest respect. I am currently taking a translation course from German into English. These two languages are quite similar and even though it can be tough as shit to translate texts in a way to get meanings and connotations correct.
its all in one place, brazil.
I'M GETTING MUCH HIGHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Man, let's be real: the unofficial translation is always better.
Where's my Duwang brothers at?
*chew*
I like the theory that the One Piece is the ancient kingdom erased during the Void Century. Which solves Big Mom's dialogue by making the meaning "is part of the ancient kingdom here...?"
But yes I agree with your overall point that people get too attached to their theories/interpretations to the detriment of community discussion.
I never heard of the two piece theory before this video lol.
great vid
yes, TCB's translation is "Very different". it's also incorrect. "engage with the series as it is people, not as you want it to be" he says, after 20 minutes talking about why the literal translation is wrong and the TCB translation where they made stuff up is better because it aligns with what he wants it to be.
I am willing to bet One Piece manifestation would require Pluton

I think the piece of the treasure big mom is referring to is pluton
Turns out, two piece is real
One Piece might just when Luffy destroys the red wall and makes the world One Piece instead of the 4 blues and grand line.
HE'S ALIVE!!!!
The pieces of One Piece are the Lode Poneglyphs. Putting up my theory.
