4 verses: 1 - Willie (highwayman) 2- Kris (sailor) 3 - Waylon (dam builder) 4 - Johnny (star rider) Written by Jimmy Webb ******** The four men came together just to record this one song. It was wildly successful so the group was formed. (People were already calling them the Highwaymen). They stayed together and toured until Johnny & Waylon's health began to fail. ********** Desperados Waiting for a Train is a fabulous Guy Clark song that they recorded. Get the live version.
For me, country music doesn't get better then these 4 men. Johnny Cash is my number one. Has been for years and always will be. Listening to true country music brings back so many memories for me. Today's "pop country" has me shaking my head right now.
Kristopherson played the sidekick to Wesley Snipes in the Blade movies. He also wrote 'Me and Bobby McGee' and 'Help Me Make It Through The Night'. Waylon was a very good guitarist. That's him playing his old white guitar at the beginning of every Dukes of Hazzard episode. Waylon also played bass guitar for Buddy Holly and was the first artist signed to Buddy Holly's own record label. On the night that Holly's plane crashed Waylon lost a coin toss with the Big Bopper and gave Bopper his seat the day the music died. Waylon was also the first artist to go double platinum in Country Music. One video I would recommend that you watch is ' The Conversation' with Waylon and Hank Williams Jr singing about Hank's father.
@TXplowgirl There is a period. Then he says Waylon was a very good guitarist, he also played the guitar at the beginning.... I think anyone who know anything about Waylon knows it’s him at the beginning of that show. Hell I knew it when I was 5 years old in 1980. Before you try to correct someone reread their statement. 🤓
Waylon was the dam builder and he was the one playing the guitar riffs that Keith liked, Kris was known as an amazing song writer and a good actor (rich bad guy in Fire Down Below). This was a wonderful reaction, I really enjoyed listening to yall talk about it AND I totally agree about the pop on the radio.
I'm a huge Waylon fan,so I hate to correct this, but Reggie Young is the guitar player.By the Highwaymen era Waylon was already having problems with carpal tunnel and playing less lead guitar. In the video from the Highwaymen concert and Waylon cuts loose on lead on Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way is so emotional for me because it's like him saying Fyou to ageing and just letting it rip and Kristofferson's reaction to it is awesome
Kris did the intro to 8th of November by Big and Rich that you did. He was a Rhodes Scholar and a Army Helo Pilot during Viet Nam. A VERY prolific songwriter and singer, he also did a movie with Barbara Streisand that was just redone with Lady Gaga. Waylon sang the verse about the Dam builder, he also was the voice on the Dukes of Hazzard TV series song and narration.
The reason it is called outlaw country is because during that time, country music had its tradional country music, then the Outlaws came along and pushed the plug. These were men that were denied by the Grand Ole Opry at the time, they have since been accepted by traditional country but back in the day they were rebels
Country music is all about the story telling. Kris wrote "Sunday morning coming down" as well as many number one hits for other artist. Well worth listening to.
Sunday Morning Coming Down is one of my most favorite songs ever recorded. That and he "Silver Tongued Devil" are right at the top for me. Kris is an honest to goodness Rhodes scholar, his ability to put together words is astounding and his phrasing is just on another level.
Barbara Mandrell and her sisters are definitely OG's... Barbera herself played THIRTEEN instruments (Guitar, Steel Pedal Guitar, Banjo, Saxophone, Accordian, etc...) All the Sisters are ALL multi talented!!! Barbara Mandrell also had a HUGE solo career... *I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool... *Sleeping Single In A Double Bed... *If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Wanna Be Right... Correct! The song is about the same soul being reincarnated into different lives. Jimmy Webb, the original songwriter, wrote it after a particularly vivid dream he had.
I love this song. I haven’t read all the comments. Not sure if you know but Waylon gave up his seat on the plane to Richie Valens the night the music died
I love Willy Nelson! Some of my favorites are "Always on my Mind" "Play me Like a Song" and one of my favorite music videos "Beer For My Horses" with Toby Kieth
Johnny's Hurt is beautifully haunting to me. I swear I cried the first time (or three) I heard it. I love all of these men. I can't even recommend because I don't know where to start.
Grew up in the 80s with an older father so incidentally ended up with an extremely eclectic taste in music. Later I'd listed to NIN and honestly as much as I connected with the lyrics, the music didn't connect with me. I was amazed when I started to connect with Johnny Cash outside side of traditional country music(in my 20s) when he collaborated with alt rock groups. I felt that I really met Johnny Cash "outside" our country roots. I had so much respect for a man who carried his heart in his music until the last days of his life. The lyrics didn't change much but the voice and delivery of the sound made a huge difference to the way I digested and accepted the message. Really goes to say that the delivery of a song really matters to the people you want to hear it.
To me this is the country version of temple of the dog, not on the story really, but the collaboration of many talents. Kris, he was more an actor from my memory, and as someone said from Blade. All great artist, we are gonna lose so many and no replacements…
I love this song. These guys are the read deal. Country at its finest. If you haven't listened to Hurt by Johnny Cash you need to add it to the list. The original video. It was his last video and it was a masterpieces. So true, what you said about Willie. He's remarkable. And he can sing with anyone. Seven Spanish Angels with Ray Charles is one of the greatest songs ever. Wille singing Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain, You Were Always On My Mind and his duet with Julio Iglesias, To All The Girls I've Loved Before is a classic.

So glad you asked for more of these legends. My favorite is "Silver Stallion" and I would be surprised if you don't have, at least, a slight memory of hearing "Ghost Riders In the Sky" playing somewhere it has been covered several times you might know the version by The Outlaws
“Jesus Was a Capricorn” by Kris Kristofferson is a cool one to start with. He also had some hits with his then wife (Rita Coolidge) I would recommend “From The Bottle To The Bottom” and “Help Me Make It Through The Night”. Thanks for another reaction 👵🏼☮️❤️🙏🏼
This song is all about reincarnation, the spirit living more than one life in this world. I really enjoyed your reactions, but hope you would listen a second time, more carefully - it's a bit deep at first. You guys were talking about the man who fell into the dam, and it made me remember a story about the Fort Peck Dam in Montana. My husband & I were stationed in northeast Montana with the Air Force back in the 1960s, at Glasgow AFB. At that time, nearby Ft Peck Dam was said to be the largest earth-filled dam in the world except for Aswan Dam in Egypt, and being from west Texas we were very impressed by its' sheer size. As we would drive across the highway that was built atop the dam itself, the spillway was huge, one could look down the slant of all that concrete to the water far below. One thing we always thought of was that at least one human being was entombed in that dam; there was a plaque telling of that fact. Apparently, water had been added too swiftly into the earthen portion during a stage of construction, making the earth turn into itself. There was a temporary railroad track across the top surface, carrying workers, and some of those people were swallowed into the dam itself. That story never failed to make me feel so very sad.
Willie was the outlaw. Kris was the sailor. Waylon was the dam builder. Johnny was the starship pilot. You should definitely check out more Waylon. His version of Turn The Page is amazing.
Kristofferson - Sunday morning coming down; Waylon was the Balladeer on the Dukes Of Hazzard, and I love the theme song as well as Luckenbach Texas; with Willie watch Beer for my horses with Toby Keith; Cash has so many, but I love Tennessee Flat Top Box or The One on the Right is on the Left; also Hurt.
This is another one my dad faves. Many of their songs match well with American folklore, early tall tales and short stories. American Remains is another of their songs I believe.
It's Willy as the Highway man, then Chris as a sailor, then Waylon as a dam builder and then Johnny as a fighter jet pilot. It's a story about men in America surviving and doing what they had to do to survive in the world that they were thrown into. It's one long path of trials and tribulations. Sung by 4 of the most talented and true grit musicians of the day.
I'm I the only one who's fully emotional with this one? And explose in tears when Johnny start singing? Maybe i'm to emotional 😅🤠🤟 tx for this reaction
Willie: Highwayman, Kris: Sailor, Waylon: Dam Builder, Johnny: Starship Pilot. Another side of the coin of this song is Amerian Remains, also by the Highwaymen. A bit less somber, but I think both are epic.
Let's not forget they also acted quite well, Cash was a good villain on Columbo (1974) and my favorite Kris K. movie is the underrated thriller Flashpoint (1984).
Waylon was the 3rd guy. More Highwaymen? Yes. FYI - Kris was a prolific song writer. Grammy winning "Help Me Make It Through The Night" has been covered by many artists. You have probably heard his song "Me And Bobby McGee", a #1 sung by Janis Joplin. Famous story - As an Army Reserve helicopter pilot, Kris landed his helicopter on Johnny's lawn to pitch him a song tape. Check out "Sunday Morning Coming Down". I like "Why Me Lord" (find the video where he does it live and tells the back story). A more obscure but cool recording of Kris' is "To Beat The Devil".
Waylon was the dam builder. This is the shit!! And Kris is one of the greatest songwriters in recent history. I see someone else has mentioned titles but I’m gonna put my vote in too! Sunday Morning Coming Down, Loving Her Was Easier, Me and Bobby Magee, Help Me Make It Through the Night,, Why Me Lord. He’s probably my favorite of these OG’s. ♥️🎶🎶
In 1969, Kris while in the National Guard stole a helo and landed on Johnny Cash's yard on a Sunday morning. He was a struggling songwriter and wanted to pitch one of his songs to Cash. The song "Sunday Morning Coming Down" was later cut by Johnny Cash. Kris also wrote and performed "Me and Bobby McGee", which was made famous by Janice Joplin. Willie - Highwayman(a robber that traveled stealing from other travelers), Kris a Sailor, Waylon a dam builder, and Johnny the pilot. Outlaw Country was more than just a sound, it was an attitude. Cash was told to stay away from the stage lights at the Grand Ole Opry. During his performance, he moved to the edge of the stage and stomped one of the lights.
I'll suggest some songs from each of these: Willie Nelson: I Never Cared For You (Official Music Video opens with a great guitar solo) Kris Kristofferson: Sunday Morning Coming Down or Why Me Waylon Jennings: Rose In Paradise Johnny Cash: Tennesee Stud These are not there biggest hits, but songs I think you'd enjoy. Great reaction.
Waylon was the “Dam Builder”. Waylon is my all time favorite OG. The day he died was horrific for me. I remember on Saturday mornings when momma and dad cleaned we always had the record player the loudest it could go. We would clean and dance and Waylon was always in rotation 😊 I was born in ‘75 so I grew up on every genre back when music was music. My grandkids now can name you Waylon or Cash songs. You gotta raise them right. They will also sing sing every word to Enter Sandman 🤓 my grandson who is 8 is named STAGGER LEE, do y’all know that song? 😉
At 19 years of age Waylon Jennings played in Buddy Holly's band during the 1959 winter dance party that took Buddy Holly the Big bopper and Ritchie valens
Kris Kristopherson is AMAZING!!! Singer, song writer, actor and scholar in top of a distinguished military career ! He was in the original movie A Star is Born. Blade, Planet of The Apes series etc...He's written tons of hits for other singers. You can't go wrong with anything he's done.💕🙏🇺🇸
For some country music OGs here are a few ideas : Waylon Jennings; Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys, Amanda/ Willie Nelson; On The Road Again, Always On My Mind / Merle Haggard; Okie From Muskogee, Mama Tried/ Don Williams; I Believe In You, Lord I Hope This Day Is Good/ Loretta Lynn; Coal Miner's Daughter, Fist City / Patsy Cline; Crazy, Walking After Midnight/ Johnny and June; Jackson, Time's A Wastin. Hope this helps guys.
Waylon did the damn builder. Kris is a big name in song writing he wrote Me and Bobby Mcgee, Help Me Make it Through the Night and Sunday Morning Coming Down he also had a very successful singing and acting careers he plays the main character in Convoy. All of these guys were at the forefront of outlaw country.
Wonderful reaction and without saying much more wonderful song and magnificent artist. And yeah these are the Old guard these are the men who made outlaw country outlaw country and they are loved for it didn't get much better than this. Yeah that was Waylon on the guitar Waylon was a master guitarist. Christopherson was aim it is a wonderful songwriter and an absolutely great actor remember convoy he was rubber duck. I'll repeat some of the ones that you're going to hear Willie Nelson Ray Charles seven Spanish Angels Johnny Cash old dragon flag and my personal favorite which is very very hard to find the one on the left. I'm a Texan so Waylon Jennings luckenbach Texas. For christopherson it's Sunday morning coming down every time. And Willie pick a song but I like Angel flying too close to the ground and I like his duet with Toby Keith beer for My horses. Great job guys.
Waylon was the dam builder. Reincarnation...all the characters are the same soul coming back again and again and again... In Johnny's verse "Perhaps I may become a highwayman AGAIN..." It's the same soul.
Some other OGs (or close enough to it since I grew up on 'em) -- Crystal Gayle -- Brown Eyes Blue Barbara Mandrell -- Country when Country wasn't cool Johnny Paycheck -- Take this job and shove it CW McCall -- Convoy John Conley (spelling?) -- Friday night blues KT Oslin -- Hey Bobby; Yours Truly Blue; Old Pictures TG Sheppard -- Do you wanna go to heaven; War is hell The Kendalls -- if you're waiting on me (have already made a few other suggestions tonight on other videos as well)
thank you for this , you have to check the concert American Outlaws: Live at Nassau Coliseum, 1990 no bad songs there . = To Beat The Devil /Riders In the Sky /City of New Orleans / ect but Loving Her Was Easier is so great
Had the Highwaymen on eight track back in the 70z. Loved them then ,love them still. One of my favs from Johnny Cash is" A Boy Named Sue". It may give you a chuckle. Til the next.🖒
My introduction to kris kristofferson was first as an actor when I was a kid. He was the lead in a movie called Convoy (1978) he played a trucker with the call sign Rubber Duck ,still a cool movie.
Willie was 1st, Kris was 2nd, Waylon was 3rd, Johnny was last, Kris, actually wrote Sunday Morning Coming Down, which was 1 of Johnny’s biggest & GR8’ST hits, (he was in th military) he actually flew a helicopter, landed it on Johnny’s ranch, 2 pitch him th song, he also wrote Bobby McGee, which Janis Joplin, recorded, (died), and never knew, what a hit, she had made 😢😢😎😎😎👍👍👍
You guys need to listen to Kris Kristoferson LOVING HER WAS EASIER. One of greatest songs ever written. Kris has written great legendary country songs.
Waylon was the dam builder, Kris wrote Sunday Morning coming Down for Cash, Me and Bobby McGee for Joplin also Help me Make it through the Night. love his To Beat the Devil and Don't Let the Bastards Get you Down
You probably know Kris Kristofferson more from his filmography than his singing. He’s an awesome singer / songwriter and a really good actor. I think he’s done some directing my don’t quote me on that. Waylon Jennings sang the third verse. Many are introduced to Waylon with the title to the Dukes of Hazzard tv series, but he has so many great songs. Johnny and Willie, well just pick something and you’ll love it.
Waylon Jennings was the dam builder in the song. It was great these artist performed together. You two need to do "I'll Never Smoke weed with Willie Again" by Toby Keith with Willie on stage. Funny as all get out. Kris Kristofferson wrote "Me and Bobby McGee" Janis Joplin's covered it obviously. He also wrote Cash's hit "Sunday Morning Coming Down". HIs song "Help Me Make It Through the Night" with his ex-wife Rita Coolidge, is worth a listen.
@@BourbonCountryReacts Oh, Snoop Dog said Willie was the only person that has ever out smoked him, Snoop had to hit the time out button with Willie. Funny stuff. Watch the live version, not the one that is 3:08 minutes.
Waylon, Willie, Johnny, and Kris, along with Merle, that was outlaw country. Those are the greats, check out Merle Haggard Big City, Johnny Cash ragged old flag, willie Nelson seven Spanish angels, Waylon Jennings luckenbach Texas, mama's don't let your babies grow up to be cowboy's, and Amanda,
Although the Hag was in his youth very much a criminal and outlaw he was never considered to be a part of the outlaw country movement. That movement itself was a rebellion against the Nashville machine and the labels on Music Row. It had nothing to do with singing about prison or criminality. Merle Haggard stayed with Capital Records and never had a need to rebel from that label. Even Johnny Cash never was considered Outlaw Country even if in spirit he was. When the Outlaw movement started Johnny Cash had his own popular weekly TV show recorded live at the Grand Ole Opry. He never quit his label his label just unceremoniously dropped him later in his career out of stupidity. David Allen Coe, Johnny Paycheck, and Tompall Glaser along with Waylon and Willie were the main Outlaw artists.
If you want some great exposure to Kris, his "To Beat The Devil" is almost autobiographical. To get the full depth of the Highwaymen you must do "The Road Goes on Forever" and "Desperados Waiting For A Train"
For Kris, you need to listen to his "Why Me God". It is his come to God song. He was heavy into booze and he realized it was taking over his life and he got sober,.

I don't trust someone who can't be moved to tears by good music. - Keith
I saw them live with my mom in the 90's. It was amazing. They did Highwayman songs as well as their individual songs.
I'm betting that would be awesome -Dustin
Willie: Highwayman, Kris: Sailor, Waylon: Dam Builder, Johnny: Starship Pilot.
Another side of the coin of this song is Amerian Remains, also by the Highwaymen. A bit less somber, but I think both are epic.
It Is What It Is is another great Highwaymen song to check out!
Added that to the list
Waylon was the third singer. You said it right, this is a mount Rushmore of outlaw country. Great reaction, guys.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Added votes for all of these.
Added votes for all of these request.
the highwaymen ghost riders in the sky
Added that tune to the list -Dustin

I'll suggest some songs from each of these:
Willie Nelson: I Never Cared For You (Official Music Video opens with a great guitar solo)
Kris Kristofferson: Sunday Morning Coming Down or Why Me
Waylon Jennings: Rose In Paradise
Johnny Cash: Tennesee Stud
These are not there biggest hits, but songs I think you'd enjoy. Great reaction.
Added all of those to the list
The song illustrates how the human spirit never dies.

Stay tuned. Like, soon. - Keith
Actually, the Chris/Barbra version of this movie was at least the first remake, but I think it was #3. An earlier version had Judy Garland in it.
Waylon was singing the 3rd verse. Kris has been very successful as a actor singer and song writer

Bring on those requests! We want more OGs. - Keith
They sang in this order: Willie, Kris, Waylon and Johnny. All sang and were in the video in this order.
There were 4 verses, and the singers were in this order: Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash
“THATS Johnny”. By the powers of deduction 😂

Those are the OG's of country music. The greats
We want more requests from the OGs. Seriously. We love 'em. - Keith
Waylon was the dam builder. Reincarnation...all the characters are the same soul coming back again and again and again... In Johnny's verse "Perhaps I may become a highwayman AGAIN..." It's the same soul.
Some other OGs (or close enough to it since I grew up on 'em) --
Crystal Gayle -- Brown Eyes Blue
Barbara Mandrell -- Country when Country wasn't cool
Johnny Paycheck -- Take this job and shove it
CW McCall -- Convoy
John Conley (spelling?) -- Friday night blues
KT Oslin -- Hey Bobby; Yours Truly Blue; Old Pictures

The Kendalls -- if you're waiting on me
(have already made a few other suggestions tonight on other videos as well)
oh and SERIOUSLY!? Am I just overlooking it or have you two really not yet done Ode to Billie Joe by Bobby Gentry?
“this song is F*CKING DEEP!!” just about sums it up.
Pretty much, yeah. - Keith
The Highwomen did a remake of the song called Highwomen that I really like as well.
Song was written by Jimmy Webb….was suggested to the group by Glen Campbell. They liked it so well they took the name.
"Up Up And Away", "Wichita Lineman", etc.
Or Chris leadoux this cowboys hat is also a great one
Added a vote for this.

Watch the whole live Highwaymen. Awesome.
Kris Kristofferson wrote the Johnny Cash hi "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and the Janis Joplin tune "Me and Bobby McGee."
.....the order of the singers was Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.....
Dude, Waylon was the dam builder.

kris kristofferson was the actor in the movie rubber duck and sang the the song convoy in that movie , he may have wrote it as well
Had the Highwaymen on eight track back in the 70z. Loved them then ,love them still. One of my favs from Johnny Cash is" A Boy Named Sue". It may give you a chuckle. Til the next.🖒
I'm actually quite familiar with "A boy Named Sue." I've heard it hundreds of times. Great song. - Keith
Ghost riders in the sky
Waylon was the third guy singing
My introduction to kris kristofferson was first as an actor when I was a kid. He was the lead in a movie called Convoy (1978) he played a trucker with the call sign Rubber Duck ,still a cool movie.
I remember that movie well. - Keith

Waylon was the dam builder, Kris wrote Sunday Morning coming Down for Cash, Me and Bobby McGee for Joplin also Help me Make it through the Night. love his To Beat the Devil and Don't Let the Bastards Get you Down
Added votes for all of these.
Another great one by the Highwaymen is "Silver Stallion".
Added a vote for that one -Dustin
there kids did the same song for their dads. and holy hhelltou know it's not the OG version but hell the boys sound like pops
Check out Songs That Make a Difference by The Highwaymen one of my favorite songs Cash ever wrote.Inspired by a guitar pull in his living room
HIs song "Help Me Make It Through the Night" with his ex-wife Rita Coolidge, is worth a listen.
lol @ "I'll never smoke weed with Willie again." I think I've heard more than one person say that about Snoop Dog too. - Keith
@@BourbonCountryReacts Oh, Snoop Dog said Willie was the only person that has ever out smoked him, Snoop had to hit the time out button with Willie. Funny stuff. Watch the live version, not the one that is 3:08 minutes.
Kris was in Blade if you watch movies... he is also a great actor
I was unaware of that. - Keith
Try another Garth Brooks song "Unanswered Prayers" I think some of us have some unanswered prayers we are glad about.
Added a vote for that one

I recommend Don William's - I Believe in You
Waylon was the dam builder part. Kris kristoferson wrote great songs. Sunday morning coming down.
If you want some great exposure to Kris, his "To Beat The Devil" is almost autobiographical. To get the full depth of the Highwaymen you must do "The Road Goes on Forever" and "Desperados Waiting For A Train"
Added these to the list
Waylon was the damn builder
For Kris, you need to listen to his "Why Me God". It is his come to God song. He was heavy into booze and he realized it was taking over his life and he got sober,.
Added a vote for that one.
Kris Kristofferson wrote Me and Bobbie McGee recorded by Janis Joplin. Yea, he's OG.
