Glad you appreciate Waylon. He absolutely is a legend and an icon, and he was the pioneer in artistic freedom for an artist with the over controlling record companies. Nobody holds a candle to Waylon. His love story with his wife Jesse Colter is as iconic as Johnny and June Cash’s. Although Waylon and Jesse’s is overlooked most of the time. Johnny Cash and Waylon were roommates early on in their careers. Also if you didn’t know he was playing Bass for Buddy Holly, and he was supposed to be on Buddy’s plane when it crashed. But The Big Bopper was sick, and Waylon gave his seat up on the plane and rode on the band bus with no heat. Love love love Waylon. His voice is unique. His son Shooter is carrying on the family tradition, as his Mom Jesse has a beautiful voice too.
Thought he gave up the seat to Ritchie Valens (who was sick). The story goes when Waylon went to walk away, Buddy joked “I hope your old bus breaks down,” to which Waylon replied, “well I hope your old plane crashes.” Waylon struggled with guilt over his last words to Holly for a while but ended up becoming a legend in his own right. Transformed the sound of country music.
Guy, Waylon and Willie are two of my all time heros! Waylon was a badass! He was so fed-up with Nashville over producing his music, he pulled a pistol on a producer for f…ing with his music. He left Nashville, and headed to Willie ranch to start recording his music. All hit makers. To watch him play it seems just effortless!
Gear Jammer Garage,my as well! Throw in some old school ZZ TOP(70's ZZ). Yep for sure.Waylon, ZZ th' best duo ever can't go wrong with em' Gear Jammer Garage
Guys you've won my heart, you get Waylon. May not be a race track, but was the best to ride grand entry at the rodeo. His sound is so distinctive, you recognize it instantly. Check out, Rainy Day Woman, by Waylon
Waylon's guitar playing & his band was the genesis of the outlaw movement is the main reason why Waylon left Nashville - they' the studios' wanted him to use session players & Waylon said "they come to here me & my band-NOT your guys" Waylon is lead guitar & a great guitar player!!! I am 74 & have been listening to Waylon since 1972!!! Waylon is forever!!!!!
You are so right, Waylon & his band created th' outlaw movement ,they created a genre of music that only Waylon can perform. He stands along in this music .
Waylon Jennings is my favorite! He played bass for Buddy Holly and was supposed to on the plane that crashed. Before Buddy Holly The Big Bopper and Richie Valens board the plane they were cracking jokes. Buddy told Waylon he hoped the bus froze. Waylon told him well I hope your plane crashes. He lived with that for the rest of his life and for a long time he blamed himself. His music is absolutely amazing for a man with 21 year drug habbit and for 10 years he was spending $1500 a day on Cocaine. His wife Jessie saved him. He got clean around 1984 cold turkey locking himself in a house in Arizona. My favorites are Ladies love outlaws, If I can find a clean shirt with Willie Nelson, Bob Willis is still the king and Trouble man. Yes his guitar skills are amazing. You need to watch him live.
Old retired soldier here really liking these songs from my early days. Reminders of times with my boys in the barracks or out under a shed with bottles covering a picnic table listening LOUD to Waylon, his wife Jess Colter, Kris, Willie, Johnny, etc., etc. Enjoy!! And for Dustin, try Johnny Cash’s Orange Blossom Special and enjoy that mouth harp. If you get the video of Johnny doing it live at San Quentin, he’s switching two back and forth.
Amazing cover of the song by singer/songwriter/guitarist Steve Young. He also wrote "Seven Bridges Road", which was a hit for the Eagles. The legendary Ralph Mooney on steel guitar, and likely Mickey Raphael (Willie N band member) on harp. If you like this, try Waymore's "Laid Back Country Picker".

For sure Waylon is timeless, and as a resident Waylon head let me learn you some things. One of the many aspects of the outlaw movement was wailing using his own road band. This includes Richie Albright on the drums driving the whole tune, Ralph Mooney on the steel guitar playing Melody throughout the entire song, I'm Waylon playing lead on the electric guitar. He also doing his own harmonies on the vocals, this is especially present on the last verse where he pushes it to another level. During the seventies he's co-producing and putting in a lot of his own flavor by hand into the albums and this is really present in this song. A musical genius ahead of his time. Whoop whoop whoop
When I lived down in Mississippi I had the opportunity to record with Waylons old band ( who all lived around the Belmont / Golden area) back in the hills and they had great storys about their time on the road with Waylon. Great times.

Waylon said "Buddy I don't play bass guitar" Buddy told Waylon that "it's just the first four strings of a guitar". Waylon later attributed his style of playing to the time he spent playing bass for Holly. He was also the first artist signed by Holly and they recorded Waylon's first hit 'Jolie Blon'. Waylon's later band was called the Waylor's and the guy playing Harmonica on this song was Don Brooks, one of the best, and the guy on Steel Guitar was Ralph Mooney, hands down the best SG picker ever. He was with Waylon for 20 years after getting fired by Merle Haggard after he got cabin fever at a hotel and tried to steal Hag's tour bus during a snowstorm. This song and the album of the same name is one of the most significant ever made. Waylon had had a string of hits with RCA but the label wouldn't let him record with his own band. That's how it was in those days. Studio musicians were assigned to artists not picked by them. But Waylon was always an Outlaw at heart and nonconformist. So Waylon renegotiated his contract when it came up for renewal to have control of his music and musicians. He changed the way music was made and gained control of his music. He wanted to capture that sound that they developed on the road. This song will be 50 years old come Dec 2022 and presented the world with a whole new hard driving kind of country music: Outlaw Country. Waylon gave it the sound, the look, and the attitude. That’s so awesome. I hope my children and grandchildren appreciate my Waylon albums, along with many more of the record collection. I treasure them. I grew up with Waylon, and although my kids know him as they grew up listening to him with me. But when George Strait and Alan Jackson came onto the scene, although they’re great and I love them, my kids gravitated to the then newer country. @@kati2224 Haven't had the chance yet today, but I definitely will! And I completely get what you mean about today's music. Most have no guts and no heart.
I listen to another reaction to this song this morning. I've been listening this song since 1976 and it astounds me that younger musicians don't know the sound of a pedal steel guitar When lay hear it. It's one of the most difficult instruments To play as a musician .. 'nuff said...
I fell in love with Waylon when I was 11 years old and I still loved him on the day he died. Whether it was the way it had been, the way it was, or the way I wanted it to be, Waylon sang my life.
A little Waylon, as told by himself. The song "Don't ya'll think this outlaw shit done got outta hand" (I am not even positive that is the title, but in my head, it is lol) tells the story of one night him and the boys were playin, and had ordered some cocaine. The product was delivered, and the next thing they know, the cops come bustin in, and Waylon said, "that bag got thrown, ended up behiind the base board, they never did find it, but I got busted by the man for something that was gone. " lol. He was asked about the words of the song, and that was his answer. I love that one, it's got a great up beat.. !! He didn't try to be anyone but who he was, and at that point, he was majorly into the drugs. Jesse saved his life.
The story about the Coke was from a I think vh1 show I have it on vhs somewhere. Somebody turned Waylon on to it and Waylon said he wanted a pound. They said no you don't he said Yea. I don't know if this was that time but on this time the DEA had tracked it through the mail and raided the studio. when the law was messing with the band someone in the control room found it and you could here the toilet flush and Waylon said Well Hoss if it was here it's gone now!!

I agree with what you said, the guitar never stopped. I can think of another song with the guitar that never stops...I've always been crazy also by Waylon, hope you both enjoy.
Waylon and Willie Duets are awesome. Those guys are terrific as Solo acts and amazing together. Some of my all time favorites. Runningdeer 2 below has great insight
waylon jennings, the king of cool, and he has songs that span many years, plenty to enjoy, he was the attitude era of country music, haha the stone cold of country music
I am older than you guys. I grew up listening to waylon , Creedence clearwater, Allman Brothers Band, Any song from these artist will be a banger every time.
If you recall the first Waylon song was my bottle bribe. I told you Waylon was a legend. I actually saw him in concert in Huntington WV in 1979. That’s country! That’s the shit you wanted to learn about. that what country music is made of.
Waylon, Merle, Willie, Kristopherson, and Cash, are Outlaw Country. They did it their way, refusing to allow Music Companies the rights to their Creative Freedom...Kistofferson, not a singing Icon, he is a writing icon...They were all friends, and partied like no tomorrow.. They grew in the music, the pain, longing, defiance and love, written and sung in their songs....Poetry of the common man...
I like to tell people this is the song that turned country music on its head. The 1974 live version is so much better. You can see the energy between Waylon, Ralph, and Richie. He was at his best in the early 70s.
For vocals equal to this, listen to the album performance by Waylon on "Delia's Gone." Funny you put him on a level with Dolly. From about 1970-2024, Waylon and Dolly have been my favorite male and female Country Music singers. We both rank them at the top. I rank Elvis, Charlie Rich and Tom Jones up there with Waylon (but I'm classifying Charlie Rich not in the country pocket, but in soul, blues, rhythm and blues, jazz and rockabilly because he put his heart and soul into that music and not the bland countrypolitan they boxed him into). If you want to check out what I'm talking about, look on UA-cam for "Feel Like Going Home: the Essential Charlie Rich). For a particular song, listen to the demo version of Feel Like Going Home. It reveals the greatness of his singing, piano playing and the song he wrote.
It was definitely all Waylon guitar as well as vocals watched him do it live on Austin City Limits with dad who had most of his songs on vinyl along with many others.
Lukenbach Texas and the theme from Dukes of Hazzard: Good Ol' Boys are two other great tunes by Waylon Jennings. February 13 th was the 20th Anniversary of Waylons death.
I remember that day like yesterday. I cried more than I probably should have, but he was so much of my life. My Dad was such a huge fan, and I love his music.. It was like losing a member of my family.
Waylon (& Willie) were pushing the "If you ain't made it by 40" rule, when they went "Large", bucking Nashville with their outlaw brand of Country. Some of their tunes address this head on, like Waylon's "I Don't Think Hank Did It This Way" (always loved the line, "I've see the world with a five piece band, lookin' at the backside of me") and "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out Of Hand", inspired by a bust. Might be time to do "Willie, Waylon and Me". To call David Allan Coe an outlaw might be an understatement. (Note: The commercialization of the outlaw era might best be illustrated by the making of the movie "Urban Cowboy" in 1980, imo.)
This is one of my favorites by him. I'm glad y'all liked it. He got started in this part of the country (Littlefield, TX, and Lubbock, TX). Some other good ones that y'all might like are: Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand I'm a Ramblin' Man I've Always Been Crazy

There are a few that still keep it real, but most are produced music and just wishy washy. No backbone to say "crew you and your rules" I will do it the way I want. How many people can say they pulled a gun on a producer, and told him the way it was gonna be.. !!?? Bad ass to the core, that man was. And a sound like no other. Have you hear his grandson Whey?? He sounds a LOT like his grandaddy. !!
My parents were into motown, R&B, etc... - Keith
It's one of the most difficult instruments To play as a musician
.. 'nuff said...
I fell in love with Waylon when I was 11 years old and I still loved him on the day he died. Whether it was the way it had been, the way it was, or the way I wanted it to be, Waylon sang my life.
Waylon is a beast. My favorite voice in country period.
Love that you loved this song so much. Waylon is my dad's favorite so I was raised on a lot of Waylon music and love it all.
Ain't Livin' Long Like This, Brown Eyed Handsome Man, Are You Sure Hank Don it This Way.
Added votes for all of those -Dustin
Ha what a story! I've added that tune to the list -Dustin
@@JohnSmith-mu4to better details, but about the same outcome. The mind isn't what it used to be, and that that wasn't even anything for me to brag about on a good day. Memory is the first thing to go, they say. lol. Ilike your version better. !!! Thank you ..
Listening to Waylon live is pure punk rock.
Of all y'all's reactions I have watched this has to be the best . This is my favorite Waylon song . Between Between the vocals to the guitar riffs , this is an amazing song .
We agree. Instant playlist. - Keith
I agree with what you said, the guitar never stopped. I can think of another song with the guitar that never stops...I've always been crazy also by Waylon, hope you both enjoy.
This song was written by Steve Young who also wrote Seven Bridges Road (Eagles).
Yeah, her name was Codene.
We don't really consider AB and CCR country. But I agree, amazing stuff. - Keith
If you recall the first Waylon song was my bottle bribe. I told you Waylon was a legend. I actually saw him in concert in Huntington WV in 1979. That’s country! That’s the shit you wanted to learn about. that what country music is made of.
We've been thirsty (c wut I did thar?) for more Waylon. - Keith
You need to hear Waylon’s version of Three Dog Night’s Never Been To Spain.
Added that one to the list -Dustin
One of my favorites!
Love Waylon. Love Good Hearted Woman

You two are riots too. Congratulations on 4,000 subscribers!
Thanks!
Very few country artists have had the punch in their voice that Waylon has. Legend.
After hearing this, we'd say, "legend for a reason." - Keith
Waylon is awesome, glad you enjoyed it so much!
We definitely did. - Keith
I like to tell people this is the song that turned country music on its head. The 1974 live version is so much better. You can see the energy between Waylon, Ralph, and Richie. He was at his best in the early 70s.
Great reaction guys. As far as songs by Waylon. Waymore's blues. Ain't living long like this. Bob Wills still the king. Rose in paradise

Yall Gonna Love your Waylon list
It was definitely all Waylon guitar as well as vocals watched him do it live on Austin City Limits with dad who had most of his songs on vinyl along with many others.
The lady with the black hair was named Codene, Waylon is one of the all time greats
Great reaction guys.....Love Waylon
Thanks!
Added votes for both of these -Dustin
Well it's about goddamn time! 👍
Yeah.. where has this been all this time? - Keith

This video is actually perfectly timed. Tomorrow (Feb. 24th) would be my Daddy's birthday if he were still here. Waylon was one of my Daddy's all time favorites. He always loved the song Amanda for obvious reasons. Could you try that song? If not and it just goes on the list, I still appreciate it. Thanks for this reaction, loved it as always.

Waylon Jennings played guitar Buddy Holly's band infact Waylon was on the same 1959 Winter dance party tour he would have been in the plane crash but he gave his seat to The Big Bopper
Waylon’s son Shooter Jennings does a country version of Walk of Life. He also has a song, Outlaw You, that talks about his dad and the poser country outlaws of today.
