The animation looks fine imo, but not according to the warner bros execs. the extensive use of limited animation and drybrush smears led the higher ups to attempting to firing Chuck Jones. That means "duck season, wabbit season" wouldn't exist, nor would marvin the martian, wile e. coyote and the road runner...

I cannot believe I still remembered the exact wording and scene that line was from in a cartoon I may have only watched a handful of times nearly two decades ago.
If they ever make a GTA-style game set at the turn of the century (Red Dead doesn't count, those are firmly the Westerns genre), they had better have an achievement called "NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW" earned by very publicly stealing a car.

A lot has been written about Chuck's use of highly stylized, limited animation on this groundbreaking cartoon, but nothing has been said concerning WHY he did it like this. This is my guess: Chuck wanted to emulate a silent movie being projected at the wrong speed. Allow me to elaborate. Silent film speed is 16 frames per second, sound speed is 24. After the advent of sound, if you wanted to see a silent movie (in a revival house or on TV), you'd see it at 24 fps, making the characters skitter around all herky-jerky, EXACTLY AS THEY ARE IN THIS CARTOON. Only since the '60's was anything done to correct this problem. Add to this the corny, melodramatic storyline, a favorite of early silents like 'The Perils of Pauline', and you have a recipe for satire, both visual and verbal. In closing, I think that on a day in 1942, Chuck Jones said, "A cartoon! I'll stylize it!! AND NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!!!!
I've always liked his limited animation style. It's only recently I've begun to appreciate the work more. The character behind the animation style just fits along with the story going on so well(say in Dover Boys). I couldn't imagine (nor would i want to watch) a fully animated Dover Boys. Just wouldnt be as funny.
I always thought the reason why he animated the short the way he did was to basically take the piss out of the Hardy Boys. You would expect the boys to have personality besides "being the good guys." You would expect the actions to be more fluid. He's making fun of how stock they are - and what better way to communicate the blandness of young adult novels than to deliberately half-ass a cartoon?
Limited animation became a necessity when TV came along due to the speed at which programs had to be made for very little money. Chuck Jones himself even said something like that... Or maybe it was Mel Blanc. Well, either way it's true.

+Pineapple Time I thought it was a gag at Don Backslide's homosexuality. He tries to hid his attraction to men by covering it up with an assumed attraction to Mary, by which he also gains her father's money.
This 'toon was obviously made as a middle finger to Jones's bosses at WB. They were squeezing him on help b/c of the War, were trying to get everything done on the cheap, and had even criticized him for being in a rut creatively, so he came up with this crap. It was supposed to demonstrate a technically new, less labor-intensive animation technique, but failed utterly because of the low quality it displayed in storyboarding, in its (pun-laden) writing, characterization, and in other departments. Mel Blanc was certainly Jones's co-conspirator -- you can tell by his inappropriately loud and overacted dialogue performance, never repeated elsewhere, over which he had total control per contract, such that he could have had it re-written and/or re-recorded if he'd wanted to. The whole piece was "inspired" by a sappy and now long-forgotten kid's book series from the turn of the last century called The Rover Boys; half-forgotten even in 1942, it had no chance to resonate with a mass audience -- and predictably didn't. Jones basically threw away the entire budget he'd been given to work with, and was rightly almost canned for the insubordination and lack of professionalism he displayed. Likely the only reason Jack Warner didn't fire him outright was fear of the competitive consequences if Jones went somewhere else.
...I think I just found something so funny that I can't laugh at it. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen and yet I can't laugh at it. It's too beautiful.
Little known fact: The Dover Boys and the girl have superpowers: The blonde one can alter gravity (look at his bike). The short one has telekinesis (can pedal with his thoughts). The ginger can break the 4th wall. The girl has super-strength. The sailor can stop time.
Not even gonna lie. This is one of the funniest old cartoons out there. Like normally I don't think old cartoons are anything more than cute but this one actually got me.
I swear to tits I've watched this cartoon so many times and it has never gotten old. Such a masterpiece, from start to finish. Everything about it, the animation, the pure absurdity of its plot, characters, and humour, and even the voice acting. I would go as far to say that Dan Backslide is the best one-off character that Mel Blanc has ever done.
Tonight on Marvel's Agent Carter, they had a scene showing an old B&W film reel. It was THIS film, which was made within the same time frame but before the events of Carter. The part we saw is around the 5:50 mark. I remember seeing this on an old VHS that had a collection of old WB cartoons YEARS ago.

A lot has been written about Chuck's use of highly stylized, limited animation on this groundbreaking cartoon, but nothing has been said concerning WHY he did it like this. This is my guess: Chuck wanted to emulate a silent movie being projected at the wrong speed. Allow me to elaborate. Silent film speed is 16 frames per second, sound speed is 24. After the advent of sound, if you wanted to see a silent movie (in a revival house or on TV), you'd see it at 24 fps, making the characters skitter around all herky-jerky, EXACTLY AS THEY ARE IN THIS CARTOON. Only since the '60's was anything done to correct this problem. Add to this the corny, melodramatic storyline, a favorite of early silents like 'The Perils of Pauline', and you have a recipe for satire, both visual and verbal.
In closing, I think that on a day in 1942, Chuck Jones said, "A cartoon! I'll stylize it!! AND NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!!!!
I've always liked his limited animation style. It's only recently I've begun to appreciate the work more. The character behind the animation style just fits along with the story going on so well(say in Dover Boys). I couldn't imagine (nor would i want to watch) a fully animated Dover Boys. Just wouldnt be as funny.
I always thought the reason why he animated the short the way he did was to basically take the piss out of the Hardy Boys.
You would expect the boys to have personality besides "being the good guys." You would expect the actions to be more fluid. He's making fun of how stock they are - and what better way to communicate the blandness of young adult novels than to deliberately half-ass a cartoon?
He also makes the expressions funny and lively in each pose so you don't really feel "stiffness"
Limited animation became a necessity when TV came along due to the speed at which programs had to be made for very little money. Chuck Jones himself even said something like that... Or maybe it was Mel Blanc. Well, either way it's true.

Yeah, especially now that you've yelled it at the top of your lungs.
This 'toon was obviously made as a middle finger to Jones's bosses at WB. They were squeezing him on help b/c of the War, were trying to get everything done on the cheap, and had even criticized him for being in a rut creatively, so he came up with this crap. It was supposed to demonstrate a technically new, less labor-intensive animation technique, but failed utterly because of the low quality it displayed in storyboarding, in its (pun-laden) writing, characterization, and in other departments. Mel Blanc was certainly Jones's co-conspirator -- you can tell by his inappropriately loud and overacted dialogue performance, never repeated elsewhere, over which he had total control per contract, such that he could have had it re-written and/or re-recorded if he'd wanted to. The whole piece was "inspired" by a sappy and now long-forgotten kid's book series from the turn of the last century called The Rover Boys; half-forgotten even in 1942, it had no chance to resonate with a mass audience -- and predictably didn't. Jones basically threw away the entire budget he'd been given to work with, and was rightly almost canned for the insubordination and lack of professionalism he displayed. Likely the only reason Jack Warner didn't fire him outright was fear of the competitive consequences if Jones went somewhere else.

I swear to tits I've watched this cartoon so many times and it has never gotten old. Such a masterpiece, from start to finish. Everything about it, the animation, the pure absurdity of its plot, characters, and humour, and even the voice acting. I would go as far to say that Dan Backslide is the best one-off character that Mel Blanc has ever done.

Tonight on Marvel's Agent Carter, they had a scene showing an old B&W film reel. It was THIS film, which was made within the same time frame but before the events of Carter. The part we saw is around the 5:50 mark. I remember seeing this on an old VHS that had a collection of old WB cartoons YEARS ago.
