Before George Pal became known for classic movies like
War Of The Worlds, he was the brilliant mind behind Puppetoons.
Many of his shorts were Academy Award nominated. I am posting
this because I was disappointed to see that the only version of this
classic is either of low quality or drained of color. (though, I did see
some Puppetoon collections on UA-cam, and this MAY be included
in those)This is for those that just want a decent version of this

I'm 64 years old and I remember this from my childhood. Oh man! The only part I remembered the was "screwball army" marching in and that was how I found it here on You Tube. Amazing!

The George Pal shorts were an integral part of my Saturday morning TV watching when I was a kid.
Saw this and John Henry as part of the Puppettoon Movie as a kid, loved animation ever since !
John Henry really stayed with me for over fifty years. I can still see it and hear it in my mind

OH MY GOD I REMEMBER THIS! It was on a disc with Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo. It was in-between the two films and I remember watching it all the time, always thought it was just a fever dream until now. Thank you for uploading this!

I believe this is the version restored by Lobster films for airing on the Arte network in Europe a few years ago. Lobster does some outstanding work.
Excellent George Pal Puppetoon Animation!
It's so great to see this in it's original version-- I've known the "burned up" version for so long and it's so very different. I didn't think I would get as much joy from watching this as I did, such as seeing the colors of some of the scenes or hearing new phrases of music that were lost. I actually did an arrangement of the score for this a few months back, and after hearing this original, faster in tempo and even to where some of the key signatures are different, it's really interesting to see how much can change over the course of time. Thanks again for posting this-- I didn't know I could love this more than I already did.

I've been looking for this for years. I always remembered this short film in particular from the Digiview Productions collections, but I could never remember the title and had no luck in searching for it online. Finally found! Thank you. This short film was always shown during the Christmas Season on the local TV stations in Philadelphia back in the late '50-early '60s. I have spent hours trying to find this on youtube. Again, thank you.

As a 21 year old I really like this it's very cool in I could watch this for hours
You know, what makes these types of shorts timeless is two things. The first thing is there is no real dialogue. All emotions are shown through action and facial expressions. This is why, no matter what nationality you are, or what language you speak, you understand the meaning and story line. The second is a bit sadder. Shorts like this point out Fascism. With all our modern advances, Fascism is one of the few constants in history. We just can't seem to get rid of it. In the Arab countries, in China, in Russia, in India, In Turkey, In Egypt, In America (just to name a few ) Fascism is still alive and well. Refuses to be completely stomped out.
This feels uncanny. Im so used to the Redish Orangish Version from one of my DVDs. But this is amazing.

We think it does. That's the point. While one is living their lives, Fascism may be secretely heading towards us. In America, I believe that the signs are there that Fascism is growing again.

Yes, they used to make some pretty great kid stuff back then. They did not dumb it down for kids. Here is a link to another of my favorites from that era. I heard that this was the inspiration of the later Film versions of “War of the Worlds” or something like that.
Interesting. George Pal did produce War Of The Worlds so it is very possible! Just saw another George Pal produced movie called The Power starring a young George Hamilton and Suzanne Pleshette. The movie is a Sci-Fi tinged thriller. It has elements that seem derived from Hitchcock's spy pictures. It was a bit contrived but entertaining. However, what was really interesting is that they found a way to include Puppetoons in a short hallucination sequence.

Question- I wonder why do Digiview Entertainment DVD (especially Casper DVD) version of short cartoon had strange red entire screen?
Digiview was working off of a badly beaten up copy of the cartoon. Since it was bright red, I assume it was a 1950's era kinescope print that was prepared by NTA for broadcast in B&W TV at the time. Also, NTA was under obligation to remove the Paramount trademarks from the main titles.
It very good print with no black bars and no NTA logo.
Yes, I totally lucked out! Who knew I had a rare compilation on my hands? I had this compilation for years, which also included other classic animated shorts, but those are all on other UA-cam channels. I saw this particular version (which I did very light remastering of when I converted it from VHS) did not exist when I posted this originally. I am glad folks are enjoying it. It is the work of a genius and deserves to be enjoyed.
This remaster is great. I'm doing a compilation of all of Ray Harryhausen's animation work. Would you mind if I used a snippet of this version for my video? It is by far the best version out there and would really improve the quality of my video. I would link the video and credit you of course.

Ray Harryhausen? Awesome choice. Guy is a legend. My favorite work by him is the octopus from It Came From Beneath the Sea.

I have collected MANY versions of this short, as many as I could find, from the "Video Dimensions" videocassette (back in the late '70s!) through EVERY FORMAT in which "The Puppetoon Movie" has been released (except Beta, LOL), AND UA-cam videos... Yours is the FIRST copy I have seen where the audio is intact AND synced throughout. (Even on the blu-ray of "The Puppetoon Movie", this short's first minute-plus is out-of-sync - as can be seen and heard during Jan's sigh of relief at catching the cake that Janette has sent down to him, and the soft ping of his subsequent "arrow-thu-the-heart" gesture).
Would you by any chance have a copy of "Jasper's Minstrels" that you could post? There's a 2+ minute excerpt of it here on UA-cam, and it's in beautiful condition - but it's watermarked and, of course, incomplete. As another commenter mentioned, Mr. Arnold Leibovit has promised a "Puppetoon Movie, Vol. 3" soon - but "Minstrels" is one of only a half-dozen Puppetoons remaining that are either not on Blu-ray or not at least PROMISED on blu.

Minstrels might make an appearance on Volume 4, since Volume 4 will mostly consist of Jaspers. Would love to see it though. The Technicolor in that particular film is supposed to be amazing.
Thank you for your kind comments. Unfortunately, no. I do not have that particular short. It is incredible to me that even the Blu Ray version is out of sync! I am just now realizing how lucky I was! As I note to a previous commenter, I got this originally from a collection of best shorts. (from many artists) At one point in time, I had a way to record from VHS to DVD and that machine allowed the transfer in the highest quality. I just really lucked out that the VHS collection, (which is probably out of print now, and which had some generic name), was, apparently, lovingly transfered by that company. Rare for a generic type of product. Now I wish I remembered what collection that was!
I remember watching this on vhs as a kid, there was this and an easter egg bunny one I watched. Idk if I watched animal farm on vhs or dvd but if it was vhs then I watched that too.

I saw a version of this on television in black and white, perhaps 1955?. it does not look familiar. i recall the screwball army, marching in ranks, and being tricked to march to their doom, into a lake. it is the exact same looking army, nuts and bolts, goose stepping to their own destruction. Can there be another story line made of this? I was very young, but the images are precisely the same. Not this story line. It must be out there somewhere. i recall the leader of the army leads them in formation into the lake, arrogance to their doom. i must have been 7 years old.
Interesting! It is very possible, I suppose, that there either was a sequel or an alternate version. But it also could be the Mandela Effect. It does intrigue me, either way. Perhaps I need to do some sleuthing!
That particular short is called "Bravo Mr. Strauss". It will be available in October on "The Puppetoon Movie, Vol. 3".

It may seem that way. As in real life Fascism desguises itself as other things until it becomes The Power. Right now the USA is in that precarious position where the next presidential election, depending on which way it goes, could lead to another dark age in the annals of American history. In which insidious propositions like "Project 2025" become a reality and we are forced as a nation to be ruled by Fascists. Yet, this wasn't a quick turn. The slippery slope began in the 80's with some of Reagan's poilicies, particularly his abolishment of FCCs The Fairness Act, opening up a great big entrance for Sinclair and Fox News to begin the disinformation parade. You add Russian interference spearheaded by Putin and without acknowledging it, we were thrust back into a Cold War. During Covid fanatic groups like Q and Nazism flourished. So yeah, it may seem quick, but just like Hitler's reign it is decades that water the flower beds of Fascism.

Thank you Edward. That is exactly why I posted it, because I did not see anywhere (that I could find) a good colored version of it. Like you, I was dissapointed in the quality this beautiful little film was being presented and I did not see an option to buy the video by itself. Strangely enough, where I got it from was an obscure little video compilation I bought years ago. It also had a few other shorts I really liked. (but there are excellent versions of those other shorts already on youtube) Anyway, if I recall, it was on VHS. I transfered it at some point (I always transfer things with the highest quality I can at the time) to a DVD along with some of the other shorts. Recently, I started "re-mastering" all of the compilations; stuff I personally had created (I make silly little parodies and weird music videos) but also anything
I had recorded from TV or VHS that I wanted to keep. The end goal was to have everything on a digital external drive. I am still in the midst of this huge "re-mastering" transfer project. I call it "re-mastering" but it is not true "re-mastering". I don't have thousands of dollars of technology. To me remastering may include slight color correction, getting rid of the VHS "noise" at the bottom of a transfer, and cleaning up the sound. In the case of my own videos, it can include adding new footage, editing, adding effects, adding smoother transitions, replacing the soundtrack with a cleaner one, adding sound effects, adding voiceovers, and even filming new footage. This is all probably a much longer answer than you expected. I apologize. I am OCD. Even in my answers. Bottom line is that I am very glad that at least someone appreciates this little film of George Pal as much as I did. Carry on, superior human.

Your description fails to reveal the copyright date of this film. In other words, is he Predicting or Reporting victory over the Nazi invaders?
Good question! Tulips Shall Grow was created in 1942. So, he was predicting (most likely with fingers crossed and with the highest hopes it would happen sooner than later) the fall of Nazi Germany. That dark reign would finally end in 1945. The Dutch felt the impact of Fascism much more concretely then the U.S., who, at first, was slow to recognize the danger. Of course, Pearl Harbor would change that...
@@dali141965 Thank you. I have been a life-long fan of George Pal. His films (and many others carefully chosen) are required viewing for my employees. (Chosen from my private library of 5,000 DVD's.) I pay them full wages to sit and watch. During each day's lunch break.
The purpose is educational, inspirational, motivational, and to build self-esteem in them. It builds a fierce loyalty and camaraderie money can't buy. No other employer is this smart.

@@dali141965 It is true that Disney won more total Oscars than any other studio. BUT, did you know George Pal won 7 Oscars out of 14 feature length films. An un-precedented feat !
I believe part of Pal's secret is hiding in this quotation from him: "Something different. That's what intrigues me most. Whenever someone says 'That's Impossible, it can't be done.' ... I am ALREADY Interested."

WOW. I was watching jason and the argonauts also sinbad. clash of the titans. imdb ray harryhausen videography. Also I find it interesting that this work by george pal. and he has a huge videography thru the 1940s and it says he included a cameo of woody woodpecker in every movie. early animation and cartoons during world war 2 is a huge rabbit hole. no pun intended including bugs bunny ww2 cartoons.
