Fun story, before my parents bought me a Game Boy I played some Links Awakening on a friend's Game Boy. His save file was named TREY and he had hundreds of deaths on the save file because he would steal from the shopkeeper over and over. Much later, a year after he had moved away, I bought Links Awakening at a used game store and when I fired it up it was the same copy I had played years ago with a save file named TREY and over 500 deaths, stuck in the same part of the game he was stuck in back then.
Thats hilarious!
This sounds a tad unbelievable, but great story if true! 😂
"Get ON my lawn and please use my internet to help find your way through games!"
Derek is the most polite old man EVER confirmed
This is absolutely my favorite Zelda game. It's the first one with an actual narrative that unfolds lke a rose, as opposed to being a generic quest (which in itself isn't bad at all). It has so much personality and the island has its own history and mythology, making it feel so complete and when I first played it, and beat it, it made me feel like I was the (unintentional) bad guy which made me question my own motives throughout my life and the possible consequences for all my actions. The music is amazing and I listen to the soundtrack all the time. I know this is just a mishmash of fragmented thoughts, but this game is so amazing and means so much to me that I can't contain it, much like you in this video lol.
I gotta say. I hope they remake Ages & Seasons with this same graphics style. I looooove Awakening. One of my top favorite Zelda games too.
Ages / Seasons are criminally underrated to me, and in my opinion are on par if not arguably better than Link's Awakening or Link to the Past, blasphemous I know
@@elmoisred616 It is a plus how they have the same aesthetic as Pokémon.
I like how many of the Nightmares add to the story and the unease, and then the Anglerfish is just like "GUUUUU FOOD"
And he dies in like 2 seconds lol
Hopefully the remake makes him stronger.
Derek: "I'm a pretty happy guy! I'm a happy guy who likes to have fun."
Would you call yourself.... a happy video game nerd?
Top five moments of my life.
1. Finding the glitch that transports you to the other side of the screen.
2. Birth of my kids, maybe?
you got 3 more to go bud
@@billuminati3867 Maybe he has four kids.
The birth of my daughter was alright, kind of a pain in the arse...childbirth always is I'm pretty sure. Better moments for me so far were her first words, her first video game, and her counting to 10 for the first time.
The select button trick is great. I would break into level 8 at the beginning and get the rod weapon. It was fun breaking the game with heart container and shell overflow.
The non color one, I used to own it. If you get the Roc feather and fight the first boss, the worm, you know the boss room where you fight him has the holes on the sides that if you fall in it it takes you to a sidescrolling dungeon. If you jump immediately as soon as it teleports you to a glitch world where you can dungeon hop and pick up weapons and items you shouldn't have at boss 1.
I admit it, I was like 11 or so when this game came out, and I got stuck on the first dungeon. I don't recall the details, I just remember not understanding something about how to use the Roc's Feather. I called the Nintendo Hotline and they helped me out. Now THAT'S old.
Derek, Grace I would like to point out that my very 1st Game Boy Game was Link's Awakening DX. I STILL refuse to delete my OG game slot because it meant so much to me as it was the 1st Game Boy Game I ever beat! Thanks for bringing back the memories Derek & Grace!
Everybody knows the best part of Link's Awakening is HAVING A PET CHAIN CHOMP!
WHO'S A GOOD BOY!?
Bow-Wow!
The best boi!
I had a chain chomp pet against my will for like half a year because I was stuck in the second dungeon and couldn't get rid of him.
Still slightly bitter to this day.
Please, please make a sixty minute breakdown video of the Link’s Awkakening plot. That sounds marvelous.
That would be interesting, though I'd be worried that Derek might unknowingly pass off speculation as fact, given what he said about the Wind Fish being some sort of deity...
Koholint, the titular Isle of Dreams (the Japanese title, anyway) never existed. Link imagined everything after his boat was struck by lightning and he was struggling to regain consciousness. This much is pretty much confirmed in-game. My own speculation: the Wind Fish is a projection of Link's own subconscious, allowing Link to "fight" to regain consciousness in a way his own mind would respond to. The Nightmares and Marin are figments of his imagination, meant to allow Link to let go of reality as he dies (not unlike the dread and euphoria a person experiences while they are drowning).
That said, a beat-for-beat commentary would be nice to see. Derek, perhaps a stream is worth doing in the near future?
Just play it.
Are you watching it? I said *play* it!
As soon as he mentioned that I immediately wanted this video to be that! I completely agree. Please make that video!
Maybe once the remake comes out?
YES! YES! YES!
Link's Awakening is also my favorite Zelda game, I'm so pumped to play the remake. It's one of the biggest reason I'm buying a Switch.
Bomb arrows.
*Bomb arrows!*
Being able to replace both your sword and shield was probably a matter of the limitations of the hardware, but it led to some nice, creative combos from equipping the right two items at once!
If I remember rightly it was something the director of this game suggested to Miyamoto for a previous game that got shot down
Don't know if it was a limitation or not, but it sure got put to good use gameplay wise, like the Pegasus Boots + Roc's Feather combo to jump over large gaps.
This game always makes me cry. My first Zelda I ever beat myself too. I cannot wait for the remake
I was 7 years old in 1997 when my parents bought me my first Game Boy (a silver Pocket) and this game for our big drive when we moved from Montana to Anchorage/Elmendorf. First Zelda I ever played and beat.
Marin was my first fictional heartbreak
AH CRAP I DIDN'T GET THE META JOKE WITH WART UNTIL JUST NOW. Twenty six years and I never put together that he was more than just another left-field reference.
Kirby's in it too, and as we all know he's from Dream Land
@@SonofSethoitae So Kirby fucking died. lol
lol yeah I avoid the acorn powerup too. I can't stand that song.
The triangle power up actually speeds you up but yeah, the dialogue that is unavoidable sucks
You can skip the dialogue by pausing as soon as you pick it up
Link's Awakening was me and my big bro's first Zelda game and I'm so happy I get to relive my favorite installment on my birthday which is this remake's release date!
When the game ended, I was watching Link sitting on the shipwreck and I somehow had the same feeling the hero must have had - I felt that I have seen a beautiful world and now it is gone forever and I am left with a mere memory. The feeling reminds me the famous manga movie - Sen to Chihiro.
This was my first game that was actually mine. I was gifted a GBC with Pokemon Blue and TLoZ LA DX Edition. One of my favorite games. I recently did a play through on my 3DS. So good.
It's my head canon that, much like with how Link wakes up at the end of Link's Awakening, the others do too, with the island being where dreamers wait to awaken again. Perhaps they were in a coma, a dreamer so long they've forgotten their lives before, but now they're back, the Wind Fish is free, and they can return to the lives they had left and lost.
I don't buy $60 games at launch, but Link's Awakening is a huge exception and a huge part of my childhood. I'm going to be super busy playing this next Friday!
Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelder, but Link's Awakening was my second favorite for a very long time for a lot of the same reasons I love MM. It's a bright world populated by a lot of charming, goofy weirdos, but there's also this distinct sense of melancholy and darkness lurking just beneath the surface.
That is because the genius behind both of those games was Yoshiaki Koizumi
Love that stack of goodies behind you. Shout outs to Tomato and Legends of Localization!
Have you heard of "The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls" on the GameBoy? It's like a Link's Awakening prototype which uses the same engine!
Nice game.
It's an awesome game. That's one of my Japanese language learning goals, play 蛙の為に鐘は鳴る in the original Japanese. speaking of which, that game needs a remaster.

Link’s Awakening does have one of the best morality stories in gaming, in my humble opinion. No clear black-n-white, right-n-wrong. Even though you aren’t able to change the way the story plays out, it gives the player a lot to reflect on. Great video, Derek!
Side note, I have the remake but still haven’t played it. Need to fix that soon. :P
Marin has never reappeared (outside Hyrule Warriors) but it's highly likely that Malon of Lon Lon Ranch is based on her. They are both redheads, they both have a Mario look-a-like as a father and they are both implied love interests of Link. Their names even sound similar.
The first game I beat without a guide was Breath of Fire 3. The Desert section at the end of the game was a NIGHTMARE
@Terminally Nerdy you truly are the king of kings.
Dude, my heart goes out to you. I loved that game as a kid (and still do), but I had the benefit of the Prima Games guide. Even then, that desert section confused me.
BoF III turned 22 yesterday, btw. It will always have a special place in my heart.
I'm sure the game actually gives you the wrong directions too. Hated that section so much. And was it BOF3 where there's a section where you have to wait at an altar and not press anything for like a minute?
Not the first game I beat but the game that started my RPG love.
Maron is the girl on the ranch from Ocarina! Name was just translated different as Malon because, you know, Japanese.
Common knowledge...
As a game localizer myself, I can confirm that this is factually incorrect. The Japanese is clearly "Marin" and "Maron", respectively -- it is NOT the same name.
Adventure of Link is my favorite Zelda but this is my favorite of the ones that follow the standard formula of what a Zelda game is "supposed to be"
I used to have a girlfriend in a few of my dreams after a bad breakup, but then she realized she was only a dream and broke up with me because unlike my real girlfriends, she actually cared about me and knew I couldn't be happy with a fake girl. Marin contemplating her nature as a dream of a girl might've stuck with me more than I though.
"You know, I could make, like, a 60 minute story breakdown video"
No, stop, don't, that's definitely not something I'd watch in an instant XD
I smiled so hard, I too am so nostalgic about this game for the same reason. As a very young kid, it was the first Zelda game I beat by myself ❤️ It was the DX version and I had a gameboy printer too
To me this game happens in the times of links long slumbers in between his “ real “ adventures. When the wind fish disappears link is exiting rem sleep and about to open his eyes and begin whatever Zelda adventure you want to insert here.
The nightmares are possibly his subconscious or bizarro world versions of sages just telling him if and when he’s ready and can defeat them and officially wake up then another tough journey and possibly death awaits him.
Took me awhile to understand this but in 100% convinced this game is the stop game to explain links long hibernation like sessions.
Link is literally awakened at the beginning of almost every Zelda game and this one flips the script to show what happens to him while he sleeps and I love every second of it
Link's Awakening DX was my first Zelda game and I still prefer 2D Zelda to 3D.
Can't wait to finally play Link's Awakening with enough buttons so I don't have to go into the menu every 15 seconds. That was my only gripe with the game.
even taking that gripe into consideration, it's pretty minor.
your first game is like your first kiss. never forget it.
It's probably because of the twist ending that I keep coming back to play Link's Awakening. It's one more adventure with Marin, its one more fight with the nightmares, it's one more stroll through Mabe and Animal village, it's one more crack at the trendy game, one more trip down the rapids and up the mountain, and it's one more journey throughout the land of Koholint. The only way the land truly dies is when I play the game for the last time.
This game is tied with "A Link to the Past" for being my favorite 2D Zelda game. In fact, I've even done Let's Plays of both of them on my channel. I recently got a Switch, so I'm really hoping the remake's good, since I have it pre-ordered. Loved seeing your enthusiasm, Derek! I just wish I knew where you got that cool green shirt...
This is my favorite Zelda game too. Tal Tal Heights might be my favorite Game Boy composition, though I also love Surface of SR388 from Metroid II. This was the first Zelda game to be funny. We all know A Link to the Past is awesome too, but I actually played that game like right after Link's Awakening and as awesome as it is, I miss the humor of the characters in Link's Awakening. It's impressive that they were able to make so many really great games on the Game Boy.
I still have my brother's OG Game Boy, his cartridge of Link's Awakening and both our saves slots. Because of him who gave me the video game virus, I spent so much time trying to beat that game as a 10yo child, on my green gameboy pocket under my blanket... And yet this is still to me one of the best Zelda experience I've had so far because of its intricate universe it allowed me to wander in.
Now I'm an adult (or supposed to be), I went through it several times and can't wait to buy the Remae. I can't believe how deep was this game. And all this only shown by suble details or dialogs I wasn't even able to understand younger.
Thanks for bringing back this memory by sharing your thoughts.
Gotta thank Majora's Mask and Breath of the Wild for bringing back this feeling too, in some way.
i really enjoy the juxtaposition of the remakes visuals compared to the dark tones of the story, it makes it very charming :)
I like the added detail of the background music and Derek's humming being synced at 11:53
One of my favorite vids this year! Keep up the great work!
If anyone doubts this game's staying power, here's an anecdote: I didn't grow up with this game. I didn't properly sit down and play it until 2012 when I got the DX version on the 3DS eShop. I went in with the experience of plenty of other Zelda games and the knowledge of Awakening's shortcomings by virtue of the hardware it was originally built for. I even knew of the major twist that re-contextualizes the entire experience. And none of that stopped me from falling in love with this game.
Might've helped that I'd played it in a suitable environment over the course of a vacation in Canadian cottage country (by the coast of a far-reaching river, mostly when it was pouring rain), but everything, from its endearing cast and setting to its wistful atmosphere and offbeat humour to its haunting chiptunes and impeccable dungeon design, resonated in a way I wasn't expecting. It may not be the series at its most refined, but it might be the series at its expressive peak. No mean feat for an 8-bit game.
And when the updated Ballad of the Wind Fish played at the end of the first teaser for the remake, the feelings that came back...
I too am dyslexic and know the struggles it can cause. Kudos on you for sticking through.
This game is my favorite Game Boy game too, tied with Final Fantasy Legend 2 and Gargoyle’s Quest. The ending was so unexpected as a kid - adventure games weren’t doing that kind of storytelling back then.
My copy as a kid had a dead battery, furthest I got was was the 4th/5th dungeon. (Took me until around grade 9 until I learned about emulation to beat it) finally bought a boxed copy when I was 20
Derek, you re dead on about the remakes that "need to happen" . Like no one needed to remake Super Metroid, but I understand the first one was a lil rough to a lot of people - even though it will always be my favorite. Remake games that had a great core but were flawed in execution, not just great/popular games. Games that would really benefit from someone giving it another try
2:08 - 4:10 why I play and love retro video games. Thinking and talking about these games makes me a little kid again and reminds me of easier times.
My interpretation is that Marin has always been a seagull who was drawn into the wind fish's dream for longer than Link was, to the point where she forgot she WAS a seagull except on a subconscious level where she's got this yearning for the sky
Glad you got the Doom game finally! Link's Awakening was also the first Zelda game I ever beat, but I had the DX version. I had a hard time with the puzzles when I was 9, but it was always one of my favorites.
Hey man I really appreciate these types of vids. Like I said before, it doesn't have to be highly polished (though this was) I really like you and grace and wanna see you guys more. Turn on the camera and talk about a game that's near and dear to your heart for a half hour. I'd watch that for days.
This is also one of my favorite Zelda games. I beat this game so many times as a child and even went back to get all of the items, upgrades, and hearts.
Thinking about the story now made me cry. I would love for Nintendo to make a reference to it in BoTW 2.
My favorite Zelda game too. Stealing from the shopkeeper and using the screenwarp to get out of bounds were staples of my childhood gaming
I love hearing that you're doing good! So wholesome
I have some strangle memories about this game. I don't think I ever actually beat it, due to my save somehow getting corrupted partway through (all my instruments turned into Roc's feathers). That somehow seems weirdly fitting for a game taking place in a dream world. Fingers crossed that the remake expands on the original in all the right ways.
Also, can't believe you guys have only 400 patrons. That's just criminal. Keep on trucking and good luck on that multiplayer Saturn Doom video!
I NEED THAT SHIRT, Link's Awakening was my first Zelda and I love it to this day
You literally put my exact feelings into words, thank you
I recently played this game on the 3DS Virtual Console. So far, its my favourite installment in the series
Til Garce has an intense hatred of birds 🤣
I would love a 60 minute long story breakdown
Probably my favorite Zelda game, but nostalgia might be playing a big part of that. Remember scrounging up change and running down to the corner market to buy batteries to beat this game. Oh yeah, I won my gameboy from drinking Surge... so sad I gave away all my old consoles and games :(.
It's the only Zelda game with a concrete, deep and philosophical story when you actually analyze it and that's why it's, IMO, the best Zelda game ever made.
Nerman Talakic I think the storyline behind Minish Cap was really good as well.
Kirby, a resident of Dreamland, also appears as an enemy to foreshadow the ending
I was starting the GBC version to find out that it was being remade on Switch, but I don't own or can even dream of ever affording a Switch or Switch Lite.
STEAL IT
*NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW*
Hope you eventually get to experience it man
@@goldbergshekelwitz1596
I actually got a Switch in September, just need to get the game. I’ll probably get Age of Calamity first though.
@@perpetualcollapse awesome, glad to hear it man, i just gotta wait til my check clears on the 2nd and I'll probably be picking up a lite, had to sell my ps4 so I've been stuck playing gba and stuff on my phone for the past year
It's the first one i finished and my favorite too. It's just wacky in the right ways, and the dungeon design is really inspired
I love this channel man it's so wholesome
Here watching this video again after watching the UA-cam horror story video.
I wanna see uncle Derek talk about some Zelda more!
Well, Ballad of the Windfish is in Majora's Mask, and that's another alternate realm of existence too
much Love to you guys, I am super excited for Remake of Links Awakening! Also the Manga adaptation is amazing
It's the first game I beat too !! I was around 7 and played on my Super Gameboy. I couldn't read english at the time and my brother wasn't helping me too, thanks for bringing me back memories.
Cool video😃maybe next time you talk about some books about videogames. (Yes, about "Masters of Doom" on the shelf behind you)😏
This game took me an entire summer to beat. I think it was in 98 or 99'. I stayed at a place every summer that had no internet or tv. I used to take occasional trip home to play sports and then I would print off pieces of a gamefaqs walkthrough (not the whole thing because printing would take too long) and taking the few precious pages back to the camp with me. This game is very special to me. I wish I hadn't sold it way back but I'm day one on the remake. I still have my atomic purple GBC though!
Idk if it's my favorite but it holds a special place in my heart. I had survived a near-death experience when I was about 10/11 years old, and while recovering in the hospital, a relative gave me a Gameboy Color & Link's Awakening. It was my 1st Zelda game and I loved it. It really helped me pass the time and made me forget about all of the pain I was in.
So glad to hear it's one of your favorites too! I'm dying to play through the remake!
I had the same experience with this game, super nostalgic....years later I had a similar experience with the minish cap.
I actually came to this video because another of your videos said that this one didn't perform as well (and that you understood why).
I loved this video. I also love the game. I knew the ending before I played any version. So I have never finished the game.
I will one day, just not right now.
This was my very first game, and to this day one of my very favorites! I never made it past the 3rd dungeon without the guide... But then again I was 5 years old
I was 11 when this game was released. My copy's gold sticker is warn from my fingers - plugging it in and taking it out so much. Good game.
I have this on my switch from there store and haven’t played it yet thanks for spuring me on!
Stop skeletons from vlogging!!!! Wait... I mean..... I'm so glad this new Zelda remake is bringing so much more appreciation for this underrated game boy gem!!! I remember being so stuck in the bird tower level! I figured it out after many AA batteries!!!
Link's Awakening was made at that perfect point where Zelda was halfway between finding it's formula and experimenting. So radical in ways, but still 100% Zelda.
I beat Link's Awakening BEFORE beating A Link to the Past, which I finally did in adulthood. Pre internet, got stuck at the part where you had to dig for the flute.
Awakening DX was my first GBC game when that first came out and I beat it then. My favorite Zelda as well, so different from the others. Mario enemies only adds too how memorable a game it is.
I loved this game so much as a kid that for a while I was playing through it once a week. For some reason, I'd get to the boss of Angler's Cavern (or was it cave?) and go downstairs to sit on the couch most of the time. It's the first game I ever beat without losing a life, and I even tried to finish it without taking a hit! Can't remember if I ever managed the latter, but probably not.
One of my fave games of all time. I remember having the flu and my mom buying me this since I was out from school for like a week. One of the first games I completed too.
It's so lovely seeing the characters as the proper colors they're supposed to be. Even in the DX version Marin was all orange.
Links Awakening was my first Zelda game and is still one of my favourites. I really can’t wait to have the remake in my hands.
The music is so good and gives me intense nostalgia.
I never realized until just this year that they updated like 80-90% of the art on the world map for the DX version. Everything like the trees and the grass and the mountains and all that jazz, they didn't just add color but they updated the tiles to what I would say is a better appearance.
Marin was Link's dream version of Malon, who he'd previously met in other adventures. Possibly a mental conflation of Zelda and Malon
This particular Link hadn’t met a Malon, so it’s more of a subconscious projection of Zelda.
My brother and I grew up loving this game, and your story rings pretty familiar(though I do love how rough the original is)!
I swear I remember as a kid I was stuck in the 2nd dungeon I believe. In the swamp area. I got stuck there and didn't play the game for about a year, came back and tried over and over to figure out what I had to do. I ended up just killing enemies and apparently I had to kill them in a certain order? I can't really remember exactly. I just remember being so happy and finished the game shortly after.
Ballad of the Windfish is a super underrated song. One of my favs. Lots of long nights playing with the handyboy attachment. All those alkaline batteries strengthened my wrists lolol.
Don't be torn when talking about games! As somebody who has gotten increasingly more picky about spoilers over the years, as long as you throw out a healthy spoiler warning beforehand, it's all good. All I've ever asked for is that people tag their spoilers, and the only thing that annoys me is when people don't. Keep up the good work. ✌🏻
If I remember correctly, in the manga, Link thinks that he can preserve Koholint Island inside himself as long as he never forgets it.
And that makes the ending of the game a little bit more hopeful to me.
Marin shows up again in Ocarina of Time but she's called Malon. Different pronunciation of the same Japanese name.
I have never been a big fan of the Zelda-games, but as a kid I was a huge fan of dreams. The fact that your mind makes a weird movie on occasions while you sleep that made you feel ten times what a real thought out movie could do was really fascinating.
So Link's Awakening really hit home for me, a game about the little universe created just for you, for just a night. And that's how I wish it would've stayed, no deluxe color-editions or any other superfluous additions that waters the original down, but that's really just me whining. I'm hoping the new remake will overtake a new young audience, the story and it's concept deserves it.
When link between worlds came out i started to appreciate the older top down Zelda’s more, i used to like them but now i start to love them, also i replayed links awakening specialy for the remake and finished it before the release date was known
First game I beat on my own without a guide was Landstalker. Some of the puzzles were kinda bs, so it was really exciting when you finally beat a dungeon or figured out where to go.
Hot dang I wish I could somehow afford a switch for this one. It was my first and favorite Gameboy game, and I've been loving the Randomizer scene lately.
Zelda IV, good times and great content. As always.
Love this video! Seagulls! Wow. Never thought about it.
