Dune 2 on Sega MegaDrive (Genesis) - one of the earliest RTS on consoles. A PC port from Westwood and Virgin.

      Serguei Khadukin ,
How does it compare to PS1 Dune 2000 port?
From what I've read, decent alongside Command & Conquer ports especially with PS1 Dualshocks and mice for each person in a 2-player battle over the PS1 'system' serial link between a pair of consoles but with a twist [ not offered elsewhere? ]
Eventually the two players who were battling against each other will experience a branch in the story when they'll have to co-op against one of the other clans as a common enemy ran by the game's AI. Haven't come to that experience yet but have my systems, S-video cabling, mice, serial / combat link cable and so far a copy of Dune 2000. ( Would've been handy if Dune 2000 came with both discs needed to link a pair of consoles like the latter pair of Command & Conquer PS1 ports so the search for a second disc continues. )

I played the hell out of Warcraft 2 and KKND on my PS1 back in the day, and then I also played them on my PSP via PSX2PSP, playing Warcraft 2 on the go was still amazing.

I remember quite loving the PS1 version of Warcraft 2.
And the Age Of Empire 2 port for PS2 was pretty damn good too. That's how I was introduced to the series.

Kinda bummed there was no mention of Pikmin, but I didn't expect it to be a featured title, since it's pretty well known and doesn't push consoles to make the RTS genre work.
Still loved the video though, as I still got the actual meat I wanted.

    • @handsomebrick
      @handsomebrick 7 років тому +5

I think he was sticking to pure RTS games (otherwise Herzog Zwei would have probably been mentioned), and I don't think Pikmin was inspired by the genre at all, I see it as a spiritual successor to SimAnt.

You know I have a very vivid memory of playing PS1 Command & Conquer Red Alert over link cable with my brother back in the day. I remember hauling my 19in. television into the living room and positioning it so I could watch my brother play on the larger television to cheat. :D
Thats like the only time I ever remember using the PS1 link cable! lol
It was fun. PS1 C&C wasn't great but it was my very first exposure to the RTS genre (we had no computer in our household until several years later). I have a big 'ole soft spot for the PS1 C&C games because of that.

You appear to have overlooked a couple of rather prominent cases - Tom Clancy's EndWar on PS3 and Xbox 360 was also built for consoles, and got around the awkward selections by using voice commands (which actually made it horrible when ported to PC). Army Men RTS is significantly less prominent, but got around selection boxes with selection circles of varying sizes from the center of the screen.

Never knew that SC 64 could be played with the mouse. Also, One of it's biggest strengths was the ability to play the entire campaign coop. The exclusive content being the final mission (Resurrection) was also a bonus.

Command And Conquer Red Alert Retaliation and KKND2 (european only) on PS1. very awesome RTSes, I played a lot back in my childhood and enjoyed with friends on splitscreens of KKND2. but CNC:RAR only support link game, still fun believe me.

The ones I remember playing are Mega-Lo-Mania on the MegaDrive/Genesis (although I never really played it that much, it was one of those games I picked up a couple times but remember really well), and Dune 2000 for the PS1 (although that was a console port to a PC game, so I don't think it counts as a "true console RTS game").

Alien vs Predator Extinction (PS2 & Xbox) is an admirable attempt at a console RTS, there's Warcraft on PSX, Halo Wars. I remember reading about a Lego RTS game, but it might have been on DS.

Oh boy! Been waiting on this one for a long time! Have I got a list for you!
Alien vs Predator: Extinction (PS2 and Xbox)-- An interesting, underappreciated diamond in the rough with three very different faction playstyles. The only problem is there seems to be no Skirmish/Multiplayer modes :(
LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth 2-- A fantastic conversion of classic RTS, only problem is it's pricey.
Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat (PS1)--A Total War style game for PS1. Might be interesting, but I've never played.
Warhammer: Battle March (360)-- The above on steroids: multiple playable factions but a pretty linear campaign (to my knowledge). A must for your next one.
Stormrise (360)-- A terrible game to be sure, but one with some very interesting ideas and factions. done from a third person command unit's perspective. Also made by Creative Assembly, so that's a thing.
Army Men RTS (PS2 and Xbox)--Exactly what you think.
Grim Grimoire (PS2)-- An Atlus published game from 2005. Again, expectations meet reality.
Supreme Commander (360)-- A valiant effort, but this is Supreme Commander, where the individual unit limit is 1000 so yeah...
Universe at War: Earth Assault (360)-- Three distinct alien factions and made by the guys who did Command and Conquer right down to the music. clunky but worth a look.
Thanks for tolerating this little Sperg Session!

Personally, my favorite console RTS is still Tom Clancy's EndWar. Like Halo Wars, it was an RTS made with console controls in mind, and it had a giommick that actually worked: Voice Control. You can shout orders into a headset and the game will (pretty decently) translate what you said onto the battlefield. The controiler controls were also nice, and I just like the style of the game, with 3 distinct factions (European Federation Enforcer Corps, Joint Strike Forces and Russian Spetznaz), and the game still has a very nice design and look.

GrimGrimoire by VanillaWare on the PS2 is a strange and fascinating console RTS.
I don't even like RTSs, but love VanillaWare so picked up GrimGrimoire expecting it to be like Odin Sphere, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, and Princess Crown. Rather surprised that it was an RTS, but ended up being quirky and fun. Think it's worth a look.

A bunch of RTS' got Xbox 360 ports. Command and Conquer 3, Red Alert 3, Battle for Middle-Earth 2, Tom Clancy's Endwar, Supreme Commander, Supreme Commander 2, Universe at War.
Of course there was Halo Wars as well, but that one you've already discussed.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the various RTS games on the Sega Genesis. There was Herzog Zwei, Dune, and I think one or two that I am forgetting. The Genesis was a surprising source for RTS games before they were really popularized by Warcraft 2.

  • @leeartlee915

there are some good Japanese strategy games that are older than the games you covered. Telenet made two Hiouden games for the SNES, and I think they are both fan-translated. They also work with the mouse. And they're the original games; there is no PC version.
Lord Monarch is a very old, almost proto-RTS game from Falcom. It came out before the term was invented. It was very well received in Japan. there is a great expanded port for Sega Megadrive, and a not-so-great Super Famicom non-extended port. Falcom even released the Windows version in English for free, and you can easily find it online if you search.

Punching Weight episode suggestion: Killer7. When it comes to "weird," it doesn't get much weirder than Killer7. Just about every aspect of that game is unconventional, right down to the controls (you move your character with the A button). But it's also one of my favorite games on the GameCube and still my favorite Suda 51 game.

I thought C&C on the PS1 was pretty decent. Not as good as the PC version but it looked pretty much the same and played quite similarly. No analog support is a bit annoying but not a deal breaker in the slightest.
Tom Clancy's EndWar should've been mentioned. Finally a game about WWIII where you don't have to play as the US. It also had some pretty cool gameplay and it could be quite challenging in the last levels of the campaign.

I'm curious what y'all would think of Valkyria Chronicles. Originally released on the PS3, it was ported to the PS4 a few months back. Its a RTS wherein you contol each unit individually, and when you do, the game dives from an over the top perspective into a third person shooter style. Its kickass, stylized, has charming characters, almost completely fully voice acted, and is a lot of fun! One of my favorite games actually.
I recommend y'all check it out. There is a sequel on PSP (2 actually, 1 didn't come to America) and a new title will be coming out soon but it appears to be much more action based.

Some suggestions for those who are interested in Wii RTS:
-Takt of Magic (only in Japanese, but text is only necessary to understand the story)
-Monsteca Corral (Wii Ware; very weird but interesting concept)
-PES series (soccer with RTS elements)
    -Battalion War 2
    -Overlord (similar to Pikmin)
    -Pikmin 1 and 2 (ports)

The reason units in Command & Conquer don't attack enemy buildings is because you can use an Engineer to take over enemy buildings for yourself (and you can then build enemy buildings or units!) so you might want your units to guard buildings while your engineer walks over without damaging them.

Dang, you beat me to it. I love that game. Fantastic art, great story, and pretty groundbreaking in social terms considering it had an openly gay main character.

I went through all the cutscenes and Lillet does say she'll "offer her heart" to Amoretta. But after research it appears the _Fear Effect_ games were the first console video games to feature an openly gay, and explicit, playable protagonist.

erm... there are actually many ... I can think of 10 on the PSX alone... Actually I will try and list them here:
    Command and Conquer
    Red Alert
    Warcraft
    Civ
    Civ 2
    Populous
    X-com
    Age of Empires
    Dune
    Shadow of the Horned Rat
    Dark Omen
    Warzone 2100

It's interesting how Ressurection IV and so on from SC 64 turned out to be canonical to the Starcraft story.

  • @andrewsallee

my most nostalgic RTS console game is Command & Conquer Red Alert Retaliation for the PS1. with over 100 multilayer maps, 2 campaigns. and most of the issues you brought up about the first game fixed. I loved it and sunk so many hours into it.
My favorite map was by far 65, as you couldn't just tank rush, and it forced you to build transports for beach invasions. me and my friends had many D day like situations on that map.

I had X-Com Terror from the deep for Playstation one, and I liked it, controls were fine but load times and enemy turns were very long. Also Warcraft 2 for Psone is good and playable port. Also Red alert Retaliation for PSone was ok. You definitely need to check those out.

PS1 favs are: KKND Krossfire, Dune 2000, Warzone 2100, Warhammer Dark Omen, Populous the beginning, Z (The bitmap brothers) to name a few :D.
My all time fav console was the ps1 and loved every minute of it.
