It's funny because I guarantee you the team was like shit, this game is not long enough, what do we do? And someone shouted in a panic "the ishimura comes back! Just reuse the old assets!" But it actually turned out good.
I’m replaying DS2 for the 1st time in probably 12 years and I totally forgot that you go back to the Ishimura…the amount of dread I felt pulling up to that ship, seeing its name lit up was a great holy shit, I got to go back in there moment!
I believe it’s said once, that the hardest part in Dead Space 1’s development was the hallway segment where Issac is dragged by a tendrill. Because the devs planned to make the entire game interactive,so they’re forced to add bunch of character animations , just for this less than a minute segment.
That scene almost killed the development of the game because of how difficult it was for them actually create it. The amount of resources and time was crazy. At least that's what the lead developer had said in an interview about the game
IMO they're the worst parts of an otherwise outstanding game. The fact that the final boss has one as well is stupid. It's a shame they wasted so much dev time on that. Looking forward to the remake to see how they handle it all.
I love how if you take the first letter of each chapter is spells out “Nicole is dead” seemed to me they were hinting that subconsciously Isaac knew the entire time.
I like how people will copy/paste top voted comments from other reviews/retrospectives just to get some likes (not as much as the original comments, though)
Dead space 2 had one of my favourite moments, when you are stomping on a nacromorph and Issac says "I hate these things!" it was such a perfect character moment that perfectly mirrored your own feelings, both Issac and the player feel exactly the same in that moment
That has to be the best character arc, from silent guy to shouting curses at the necromorphs, it does give him a more human look, instead of a cold badass person, he is mad and still shitting himself from fighting those things
My favorite moment is when Issac screams "I am THE DEAD SPACE" and dead space all over the Regenarator. I'm crying and shaking rn. Truly, one of the most moment in video game history.
If i remeber correctly, the Zombie-Like Necromorphs introduced in Dead Space 3 were supposed to be a lesser version of a Necromorph brought about by people devouring dead Necromorphs when they ran out of food.
Yes, but only the very thin ones, that die in one hit. But the ones with pickaxes and other sharp tools are different. I'm sure RonaokeGaming has a video on them. It's quite a good channel explaining necromorphs from the biological point of view.
Personally I believe Roanoke said this or someone else did but the explanation i feel makes the most sense is it’s a snow planet full of blizzards. Being in a blizzard is bad enough but a blizzard and it’s night you can’t see crap. So if you see a human silhouette you’d want to attempt to reach them. And the marker makes the necromorphs keep their human appearance so the living unwittingly approaches them thinking they are human only to be killed once they get close. It’s honestly a good strategy.
I think it was shown in game that the zombie-looking ones were corpses that were possessed and repurposed by these mite-looking things, unlike the regular necromorphs which were created by infectors
Honestly, I would have loved just one hella cheesy line like that, especially since dead space has such strong RE 4 influence. Dead space 2 also has a couple cheesy action scenes similar to RE 4 so I think just ONE cheesy line like that would have fit and been a good moment.
I donno why but Dead Space's Inventory system, the shops, selling what you don't need and buying what you do, upgrading your suite, the upgrade thing(forgot its name), I loved this whole system and it specially felt nice because it was the only place you felt safe, it was like a soft drug for me.
@@lillalefur1146 I've been playing through the remake, and I've been wondering if I was going to get attacked at the shop. So far I haven't. I hadn't played any of the originals in so long I couldn't remember if it was a thing in the game or not.
For me I feel like the games getting less scary as the series went on made a lot of sense, in the first game Issac didn't know about the alien threat on the Ishimura so of course it was terrifying. In the 2nd he had already been through this type of situation so he was better prepared, by the 3rd entry in the series he practically has a doctorate in killing Necros. He is an authority on their destruction, so of course he is the most proficient in the last one. The scale of horror to action game just makes sense. At least to me.
That does make sense, but not: 1. Why are you stuck with James Vega from Mass Effect instead of Ellie? 2. Why are you spinning and hanging all the time in cutscenes you have no control off? 3. Why are you using guns that were proven to be ineffective, instead of engeneer tools that were proven to be very effective? 4. How did Unitologists turned into an army Cerberus style (Cerberus army in Mass Effect made sense, but this is a cult)? 5. Why is there special camera introducing every special Necromorphs, instead of camera always following Issac and keeping the immersion that you are him? 6. Why is there no tension from atmosphere and gameplay perspective (eg. FEAR, or previous Dead Space games)? 7. Why Zombies/Necromorphs have axes? 8. Why are mature adults arguing like teenagers in the middle of apocalypse and sabotaging entire operation? 9. Why Ellie who was a determined, cunnining, capable and overall fighter of a character, became stereotypical damsel in distress, but with bigger tits?
I could definitely get behind this if they didn't do the waist-high wall, space marine wave slaughtering, tension destroying game that was DS3. It was still a fun game, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't Dead Space.
@@aleksapetrovic6519 i agree with most but not all of your points let me list off the ones I disagree with and why 2. I assume u mean the tenticles imagine trying to aim while being thrashed around upside down that does sound easy so having a hard time aiming is valid id it was the same it wouldn't feel punishing 3. because sometimes u just gotta use what is around 4. because they directly Oppose earth gov would be hard to do that without military 5. because they want u to see it also its still a 3rd person game not a first person game its not gonna be super immersive 6. what do u even mean explain more 8. because being an adult doesn't automatically make u some perfectly reasonable person
@@admiralkaede 2. I am not talking about tenticles, but in general. Most cutscenes in DS3 have some tension without any control. I remember one specific one where you are in spaceship and try to get in a suit. I was just looking around, because I know everything would be fine and it was generally uninteresting. Compare that to DS1 when you are dragged by the tenticle or in DS2 when you try to survive the bus section only to end up hanging. Both are tense because you have control of and can fail. Some would say those are glorified QTC, but I would rather have that then have Witcher 3 40 minute long cutscene or that thing in DS3. 3. In DS1 first encounter with monsters is showing conventional wepeobs and tactics don't work. In the end of DS2, entire army batallion is obliterated in seconds by the Necromorphs. And in DS3 you are using conventional wepeons with success. Scavanging is gameplay justification, but in reality you were scavanging in previous games. Frankly, it would be better in terms of gameplay and story Issac training soldiers to fight like an engeneer. 4. Cerberus was a state with a state like Hazzabollah or Grey Wolves. Unitologists were directly inspired by Scientologists. Can you imagine militant scientologists? The best evolution of for Unitologists would becsomething along the line of sleeper terrorist organization like Mythic Dawn, or Sixth House from the Elder Scrolls series. Imagine if someone in your group was a sleeper agent or mind controlled (maybe even you). We have seen in DS2 this story works like a charm. 5. There were many Necromorph introductions that worked perfectly. In DS1 I remember when one of them introduced slowly from the show down the hall. It was creepy and amaizing. In DS2, the charging Necromorph was also greatly introduced all while you having a control. Granted, most Necromorphs were introduced safely behind the glass door, but having a zoomed in camera just felt off and less tense. 6. In DS3, you are always accompanied by some music, usually heroic. You talk more trough chat far more and things seem to be still operational even tough you are told world is dead and any effective fighting force is gone (to be fair I stoped playing once we landed on ice planet). Compare that to previous DS games where you are all isolated, everything is falling apart or has fallen apart, everything is quiet and you know something can and will jump to you. Dead Space 1 and 2 have many things to do when it comes to horror, but Dead Space 3 simply trew all the horror out of window. Also Necromorph zombies that hunt you with axes are just redicilous and out of place. 8. I understand people panicking and endengaring everyone and maybe killing someone in the process. I also understand people getting depressed and simply giving up. I understand people wanting to side with the enemy either as a petty vengance, or power, or fear. I do NOT understand adults with professions that requires heavy discipline and focus bickering and killing each other over their sex lives. They act like teenagers from American movies where they make drama for the sake of it. It's not tense, it's annoying and idiotic. There are literally monsters that kill you and turn you into one of them. Sex is the last thing you will have on your mind in that situation.
Yes and what I love about it most, is that before the Ishimura, Isaac didn't have any grey hair. But when he takes off the helmet at the end, he actually does! That whole ordeal and the stress of it all aged him by a good 10-15 years!
Are you sure? Did you play the game without the mouse fix since I think its because of the mouse fix you can rotate the camera at the beginning. I think in original game you couldnt rotate and the only way to see how he looks like is if you rotate camera once you get the move control and see his ID card on his suit :)
Which pretty much completely ruins the whole Blank Slate thing because you can't be a blank slate if you can see what the characters face looks like plus the fact that you already has a backstory and everything.
Deadspace 2 was fantastic at subverting expectations established by the first game on many levels. Before, going the opposite way of the illuminated path meant finding extras, not enemies. Elevators were a sacred space where you could let you guard down. None of this was true in 2 and I was caught with my pants down a lot because of it. By the time I ended up back on the Ishimura, I remember being so paranoid that the rolling can almost gave me a heart attack. I felt so stupid after that I settled back down, only to nearly fly into my ceiling when the brute jumps out. It's really some immaculate pacing. You can really feel it in the story beats too, like during the train crash and the final shuttle. You're right there with Isaac the whole time saying, "are you kidding me right now!?"
I'm playing dead space 2 right now and I find it alot less scary than the first one probably because I'm playing them back to back but I'm on chapter 10 right now of dead space 2 and I've yet to experience a jump scare
I like to believe that the voice Ellie hears at the end of 3 is actually a hallucination. She's been around the Markers just as much as Isaac after all. But she never experiences any side effects? Bullshit I say.
@@drummermonke when I said "I like to believe" that wasn't me trying to convince anyone of anything. It's just how I like to interpret the events of the game. Cus it's more satisfying than just saying she's immune and she really heard Isaac over the radio. Even if the game outright said that was true, which it probably is, I'm still going with my version.
@@drummermonke the marker never chose to speak to her like Issac though. It literally used Issac to return to the planet. In the remake, daniels implies that the marker imprinted something in Issac (the code to build marker likely because he is an engineer) and that he would never recover from it. Ellie wasn’t anything really. She was at most more Necrotic tissue.
I stared playing the Dead Space Trilogy for the maybe 6th time Friday, finished Dead Space 1 last night and started 2. Now being older and having a child… the baby and children necromorphs brings a new psychological horror to my mind. In the hospital the doors have screens and in one of them you can see a crib on the screen and hear an infant mercilessly crying and that ate my soul. Never noticed that, and never thought about the horror of the children.. until I had a child. Each play through I get a new experience by playing with different weapons or on a harder difficulty but Dead Space 2 has put me through an existential crisis. 😂😂😂
The necromorphs are some of the coolest, most innovative aliens in any horror imo. I went through a period of time where I was obsessed, pouring through wikis for every scrap of lore i could find lol. It really is too bad it petered out on such a low note; i feel like so much more could've been done between the necromorphs, unitology and mankind's overall situation.
@@diearschmeister ???? Not really??? I mean I suppose if you're using the sole basis of dead flesh being reanimated, but the comparison ends there. They're an alien race who happens to use other species' biomass to 'reproduce' (enlarge their numbers, whatever u wanna call it). Not trying to argue- idgaf enough to die on this random hill - but I think calling them zombies is inaccurate
Based take on DS3. I remember that came made me feel a unique sense of doom when I finally forced myself to play through it and the DLC. I don’t think I was even familiar with Lovecraft at the time, so it’s cool to retrospectively see it reviewed.
I've never played these games, but i can safely say it isin't for me if that's what it all leads to. That kind of thing feels more like the writers said "fuck it, time to kill everyone" rather then an actual ending that feels natural and means something.
This is exactly how I felt about the games. I actually only finished DS3 last year, after finally pushing through the dull ice planet section, and getting to the much much better ending than I anticipated. Then the DLC was the high note, and I loved the dark ending. A lot of people weren't happy with the ending being left open like this, but I think it very much fits the Dead Space franchise. If they ever make a new game, I hope it picks up much later in the timeline and with new people. Maybe with a Mad Max in space setting, with people trying to scavenge their way around because human society has long since been destroyed by the brethren moons. With instead of Altman, Isaac now being looked upon as the the holy martyr.
This is my first time viewing your content, I don't spend a lot of time on the internet. I'm halfway through and look forward to your take on DS3 (I never played it) Absolutely phenomenal job so far, your narration is brilliant and quite captivating. Your overview has not only clarified forgotten details, but you can tell your genuine love and admiration of this game.
Pineapples make my tongue itch but I still eat them anyway. I fully agree with you, I’m only a third of the way through so far and I’m thoroughly enjoying the video.
Mild Spoilers, but I must say that I enjoy the slight story changes that were made in the remake. And Issac talking in it works better for me than him being silent.
Darkwood video would be a nice addition to this Halloween series. It's a cult classic. Maybe even Subnautica, as a wild card. Not a horror game per say, but a lot of us experienced constant dread while playing it. Sometimes it took a lot of courage to just move forward.
Getting my soul nice and ready for the remake + callisto protocol. Keep up the great work me and many others enjoy your amazing content. Love long form video essays.
Let me say something here, I grew up playing these games and i love them dearly. Im so excited to see dead space make a comeback especially now that im older. You've done an amzing job with this video, rarely ive cherished content on youtube recently but aside from nostalgia, you cover things very well and simply love your tackle on concepts and breakdowns. Officially subbed
First off, Dead Space is cosmic horror done right. Straight up Lovecraft. You're slowly going mad, you're struggling against alien gods, and you're entirely insignificant in the face of their plans and desires. Second, I love how when Isaac stomps on something enough in 2/3 he starts cussing out whatever he's stomping on. "MOTHER FU- SON OF A BI- HATE THESE FUCKIN THINGS-" And the first time that happened to me was right after I got the shit jump scared outta me so it was perfect. Hats off to whoever had that idea, was genius and I howled in laughter.
I remember the very first time I beat Dead Space, no health packs, only had ammo for a stock Pulse Rifle. I barely pulled it off, man, that was a hell of a ride.
I haven’t had the pleasure of playing 2 and 3, but I know all about the story, and the overarching narrative of this trilogy is, in my opinion, one of the most compelling in any media. As contentious as it is, I applaud the devs for going as dark as they did, and how it ends with earth and the brethren moons. I always rewatch the retrospectives made by Avalanche Reviews on this story for Halloween, as it’s just that damn good. Thanks, for making another to listen to, Gingy. Keep up the great work!
I must say, Dead Space is an extremely underrated series, and despite popular opinion, I enjoyed Dead Space 3, even though I played it single player. But as I said, an extremely underrated game series!
Man, Dead Space 3's story was so convoluted and the design choices were so bizarre. I don't find myself replaying it basically ever. Completely unlike the other two.
I havent played it in nearly a decade but i dont recall having that much trouble with DS3’s combat. I remember being annoyed as hell about chunks of areas being inaccessible to me because i was playing solo, but according to my trophies i completed the game in 3 days. And im the type of person who’ll take a weeklong break if im getting frustrated by combat lol
I can’t express how awesome this is. It’s not just a lore explanation, but it’s also an analysis of the story and review of how it’s implemented into the game and that’s fucking AWESOME
I've always been bothered by "Kendra was there to get the marker" which implies that she knew that the marker exists. Which would further imply that she sort of knew what the marker could do to people. Which leads you to: the Valor, which I'm very certain was there to help Kendra (I think I'm deep in a speculation rabbit hole here) after Kendra literally has you send out a distress beacon to blast your location, was not prepared to deal with necromorphs. I find that so incredibly bizarre. If they're there to help Kendra, they should have some basic knowledge of what needed to be done to be safe. Yet they get overwhelmed by one necromorph.
As much as I enjoyed myself, Callisto Protocol made me REALLY appreciate the extra mile Dead Space went for it's narrative & world building. It was definitely the highlight for me.
I'm really looking forward to this remake. This game was amazing when I first played it and it's been long enough that I'm sure it'll be just as incredible as it was the first time. I had the game for a month and was only 6 hours into it. I'd play for 15 minutes get stressed out and shut it off. Looking forward to playing it again. Once you get yourself setup though you become more confident and start to explore more. Amazing experience.
Dead Space 2 is still my favorite. It was the first one I played. Then 3 then I went back later to play 1. I just love the space station setting. Idk why but that bit at 32:02 is still one of my favorite room/hallways. Just so much atmosphere. I just played through all 3 and I do like them all the same but yeah there’s a lot that’s not great about DS3. There’s still some good bits though. I like the snowy setting and the first 1/3rd is some good classic dead space. I also think the weapon crafting is fun. Im on the edge of my seat waiting for the remake
Isaac not noticing the door being open and him actually pulling in the shuttle were teh conclusions I made. This is reinforced in the second game when nicole tried to stab him but it ends up just being him. The Hallucinations are more real than reality for him
one thing i loved about dead space 2 was that, dduring the ishimura segment, it uses your familiarity of established "safepoints" or rooms to breathe in, except, this time, you get ambushed in one, i remember first time playing it, i was like "nice, safe room, time to get that armor upgrade" only to get smacked by a necromorph right as i exit the store, that shit scared me (or was it in 1 that happened?, can't quite remember)
You asked, why are there zombie enemies in DS3? I think its fairly simple. In Dead Space 1 & 2 you had the influence of the marker that was unchecked and had ZERO constraints. But you have to keep in mind where the zombie enemies are and what also is there? There are on Tao Volantis (ice planet) and on that planet is also the alien device that was built to freeze the planet and to slow DOWN the marker's influence. Do you get it yet? The alien device is slowing down the marker's influence thus it can't exert full control over the dead like it could before. This means that dead bodies CAN'T transform to anywhere near the same level. Sure, it can control the dead & it can manipulate them some, but NOT nearly the same as before. Notice that when Isaac turns OFF the alien machine that all hell breaks loose. To me, this makes perfect sense. The first two games makes this very clear...the marker has ALL the coding to manipulate dead flesh...No marker &/or an alien device that slows down the influence of a marker and you get zombies because the marker CAN'T manipulate the dead flesh to the same degree.
Dead Space is a masterpiece. DS 2 has great action and DS 3 have some great storytelling and gameplay mechanic solutions i've not seen since. All 3 are great in my opinion, but the first one has been my favourite game ever after playing 5 minutes.
I've always been a chicken when it comes to horror games but I love the Dead space series and only played it after dead space 3 was released so I played all 3 back to back
the "zombies" is DS3 make more sense when you think about it, Roanokes video on the Fodder explains it pretty well. Us humans are good are separating humans from things that try to come off as human, we are naturally good at it. Regular slashers don't exactly look human anymore so they would have a harder time getting close to the prey, Fodder would be made to counter this, they still look like humans but not once they are right in front of you. There's a bunch of them on the moon because Danek had already been killing a bunch of EarthGov soldiers for a while, and for the marker it would be faster and simpler to make a Fodder because it just needs to wake up the corpse instead of mutating it.
I personally feel that dead space 3’s ending and fault’s can be directed to EA as comparatively 3 feels rushed and abruptly killed. And this could be a way for the studio to indirectly point that out ,that they too had been killed off by EA.
I will forever love Dead Space. I hate horror games, but played this game for 70+ hrs the first time I got my hands on it. I loved the lore. It never felt too scary. Which, I know is what the genre is about that's why I don't play them. Plus, the cutter is still my favorite "weapon"
Ok this is a point everyone always gets wrong every time a dead space video is made. The ending is NOT the first time you see Isaac's face. You can see it in the beginning as well right after their shuttle crash lands on the Ishimura right in the beginning as well. Just turn the camera towards his face when he is still sitting and you can see it clearly
Thanks for discussing DS3 in a more fair manner than I've seen from a lot of other UA-camrs. I feel it is really underrated and while yes I definitely agree it has some really tedious gameplay at points, the story is great with some extremely badass action set-pieces and a great ending to the series
While the dlc ending does fit with dead space’s lovecraft style lore, it feels too much like a cheesy horror movie ending to abruptly end when the brother moons appear. I would like to know where the story goes after that, especially Ellie’s fate. Just strikes me that there’s still a story to tell there, maybe not one that’s a happy end but one of Issac facing against an enemy & shedding light on their predicament.
This is one of my favorite game trilogies of all time. Even liked the third one tho of course it wasn't as good as the first two in a few ways. Enjoyed the weapon crafting and combining and the coop play was a lot of fun had a gaming buddy in a different state I'd play with. It's the only games I've bothered to 100%. God I love these games so dang good now I wanna replay them all lol Edit: my fav combination was the rivet gun with a ton of ammo and arcing electricity one with an autoreloader and stasis module on it so that each enemy hit by the arc would be hit with some stasis slowing them down and I'd rarely need to reload. Was how I beat it on nightmare difficulty 😄
One of the big problems with Dead Space 3 was the crafting. It made you way too powerful way too quick. Took a lot of the tension out of the game. Another thing was some of the real lazy writing that was so far removed from the other two. For instance, Ellie magically has her eye back and has titties twice the size as before haha.
Ds 3 had the best concept for weapons. I loved there not being a store. Felt mre real. The weapons were gr8 too after i figured it out. Am playing a pure survivalist run right now. Finished the series last wkend. Really fun. Only game i ever replay are the RE games
@@joebeast15 dude you get a prosthetic eye. And look down...why not some tits too. Lol. But yea the whole love triangle crap was 😴😴😴😴 to me. Killin the jerk bf and stomping his body and tossing it over the cliff was good fun tho. There were some high tension. But yea no real fear..
Despite all the flaws of Dead Space 3, it had one of the best co-op missions I have ever played. It was a side mission I was playing with my brother. He was Carver and I was Isaac. You both get split up and have to work your ways back to each other. My brother started going crazy about all the insane stuff he was seeing while I was just killing normal necromorphs and going through normal levels. It took a little while till we realized that why he was seeing was not what I was seeing. This was one of Carvers backstory missions where he was hallucinating his past with his wife and kid. But with both players seeing something completely different and not knowing it was just so awesome. It was a good game played in co-op, but I can see how much it blows doing it solo.
I loved this video. This game series is so unique and special. I really like the lovecraft anecdote, because something like that really interest me. I watched the bloodborne video of yours which was crazy good.
There is nothing scarier than playing Dead Space 2 on release and having to step back into the USG Ishimura. I had a flashback of all the horror from the first game and did not want to progress through the ship lmao. Now that’s a job well done on how to bring back horror
Yes you fight your co-op partner in DS3's Awakened DLC, DS3 was a really fun co-op game but it's just too bad it had no horror. The co-op Carver missions were pretty interesting too, I remember a part where one of us picked up an audio log and it was normal for one of us but to the other player it was just someone screaming.
Yeah I love how they handled the co-op of this game. Even cutscenes would play out differently depending on who you were playing as. I remember my friend playing as Carver at some point and seeing hallucinations that I didn't, and getting freaked out over it.
im glad the necromorphs end up winning in the end. in so many horror games or horror media in general the protagonists always win no matter how impossible it would be to do so. the necromorphs are beyond fucking impossible to beat. they've been destroying species after species for who knows how long and humans are just more biomass to put on
Leon Kennedy… Dante Alighieri… The Doom Slayer… they don’t know what horror really is. They haven’t experienced the pain of being unable to save the ones you love, or even just some random Joe. They haven’t experienced having your mind ripped apart from the inside. They’ve all had silver spoons in their mouths from the day their first line of code was written. The things I’ve seen… people ripped apart, innocent children turned into monsters, people fused to the wall screaming in agony… words cannot describe the terror of it all. There is no heroism in my work. I am only a survivor… a survivor who’s slowly turning into a monster himself.
Don’t forget the small but really cool detail is Issac’s heavy breathing due to the fear of well everything happening around you and the random sounds of metal banging and more which puts you on edge.
49:57 I haven't seen many people mention how you can clearly see Isaac is terrified the moment he starts turning around to see Ellie only to let out a sigh of relief when he realizes it's not a hallucination this time.
I don't know why I watch all the videos I stumble upon about dead space story/lore/retrospective. I've injected the lore into my bloodstream already, but I just can't help it, since it's always so delicious. I don't know and I will not stop it. This lore video will make me whole, I guess. If not this then the other for sure.
I think one of the best parts about Dead Space 2 is that it transforms Isaac from a survivor, a somewhat passive protagonist into an angry, tormented but also highly-motivated fighter, who actively seeks out measures to circumvent either his current predicaments or to reach over-arching goals. That was also helped bysome of the best voice acting direction I've ever seen (in fact, it was Dead Space 2 that made me realize the difference in voice acting quality between games).
I absolutely love Dead Space! My first introduction to it was actually the animated film “downfall” which was awesome and still is for me. Then my dad rented the game from Family Video (R.I.P) for the weekend and I was in awe watching him play it. The next morning I started a new save and secretly played it while my dad was sleeping and I was hooked, terrified, and absolutely obsessed with the series up till dead space 3. I’m so excited about the remake and that the series is still recognized and loved for it’s intended purpose of scaring the shit out of people.
Honestly I loved 3 I remember picking it up on launch day and being so excited to play it, as far as horror goes, it definitely wasn’t as scary as the 1st 2 were, but the jumpscares were still there and I loved them, I can say that it’s up to par with the 1st 2 but that’s just me lol
You can also see Isaac’s face by rotating the camera after the Kellion crashes. It’s fully animated as if it were meant to be seen by every player as a way of saying “Take a good look. You’re not seeing this for a long time, and it’s gonna be one hell of a ride.”
It's because of that that I think Isaac makes a terrible Brinks like character since you already know what his face looks like under that helmet so you can't really imagine yours under there. It's not like the rookie in Halo 3 ODST where you never see his face
I liked how in dead space, it actually felt like you were being punished for dying. I remember being younger and I was getting killed by a puker necro and I was so grossed out and scared I literally turned off my Xbox in a panic haha! I have yet to find any other game that instills so much fear that it just makes you instinctively turn off your console. The only games I played back when I was younger that made me so scared to turn off my console was halo ce (mission silent cartographer where you battle the sword elite and 343 guilty spark; halo 2: sword elites, brutes, flood; silent hill 1 and 2; resident evil 3-5, and fatal frame.)
I would love for a final game to come out, have the end of the dlc basically being a dream so the brethren moon can find out where earth is, and have isaac eventually using a planet cracking ship to either fend them off or out right kill one or two, thus setting up further games in the series but also wrapping up issacs story
Wish you used more in game audio at some points, the sound design is really great/unique so I feel when you cite a sound(like hunter yells) you should show it. Still great vid
2010, the birth of famous youtubers. It happens to be the same year dead space got released. One of the greatest vid game ever! Plus, I discovered 'theradbrad' channel cuz of this game.
ill never forget the genuine feeling of dread i had in dead space 2 when i had to return to the ishimura, havent felt that in any other horror game
Me too! Such a great series!!!
Totally true, I love the thrill I got when I revisited Ishimura, that was a brilliant move by the studio.
It's funny because I guarantee you the team was like shit, this game is not long enough, what do we do? And someone shouted in a panic "the ishimura comes back! Just reuse the old assets!" But it actually turned out good.
The horror of the children necromorphs on the Dead Space 2 really freaked me out
I’m replaying DS2 for the 1st time in probably 12 years and I totally forgot that you go back to the Ishimura…the amount of dread I felt pulling up to that ship, seeing its name lit up was a great holy shit, I got to go back in there moment!
I got a cold sweat the first time I got killed by the hive mind. Got picked up when I had the line gun out. Brutal!
Oh, funny science feet guy
I love ya dude
The hive hind had s9me of the most brutal death animations along with some others
I dropped my controller the first time that thing grabbed me.
You, do know you can change guns while he's holding you, right?
I believe it’s said once, that the hardest part in Dead Space 1’s development was the hallway segment where Issac is dragged by a tendrill. Because the devs planned to make the entire game interactive,so they’re forced to add bunch of character animations , just for this less than a minute segment.
I almost died at that part because it took me a minute to realize this is not a cut scene lol
That scene almost killed the development of the game because of how difficult it was for them actually create it. The amount of resources and time was crazy. At least that's what the lead developer had said in an interview about the game
Wow that much trouble for that scene.
@@itsblitz4437 Ikr, which is hilarious how much trouble they went into it
IMO they're the worst parts of an otherwise outstanding game. The fact that the final boss has one as well is stupid. It's a shame they wasted so much dev time on that.
Looking forward to the remake to see how they handle it all.

@@taitrinh8650 I loved when Isaac said "It's Clarkin' time" and Clarked all over the Brethren Moon.
@@TheHalogen131 when fighting the Blood Moon, Issac told Carver "I guess the dead space is the friends we made along the way". Inspiring moment.
It's dead spacing time
If i remeber correctly, the Zombie-Like Necromorphs introduced in Dead Space 3 were supposed to be a lesser version of a Necromorph brought about by people devouring dead Necromorphs when they ran out of food.
Yes, but only the very thin ones, that die in one hit. But the ones with pickaxes and other sharp tools are different. I'm sure RonaokeGaming has a video on them. It's quite a good channel explaining necromorphs from the biological point of view.
Or 200yr old necros.. I just finished it and started a survivalist run.
Yes that's what the feeders are
"Time to make some dead space in this room" I laughed way harder than I like to admit
I am glad dialogue that cheesy and bad was never present. lol
27:08
This should be read in Duke Nukems voice! :D
Honestly, I would have loved just one hella cheesy line like that, especially since dead space has such strong RE 4 influence. Dead space 2 also has a couple cheesy action scenes similar to RE 4 so I think just ONE cheesy line like that would have fit and been a good moment.
If they dont use that joke in the remake
I donno why but Dead Space's Inventory system, the shops, selling what you don't need and buying what you do, upgrading your suite, the upgrade thing(forgot its name), I loved this whole system and it specially felt nice because it was the only place you felt safe, it was like a soft drug for me.
Felt.
Well, you're not safe at all while at the shops hahaha got surprised a few times there
I'm also addicted to drugs
Was funny in the remake when i went in the shop just as a vent burst and Isaac took his SWEET ASS TIME to get out the shop so much that i got hit
That does make sense, but not:
@@aleksapetrovic6519 I gotta say I support number 9
I could definitely get behind this if they didn't do the waist-high wall, space marine wave slaughtering, tension destroying game that was DS3. It was still a fun game, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't Dead Space.
@@aleksapetrovic6519 i agree with most but not all of your points let me list off the ones I disagree with and why
2. I assume u mean the tenticles imagine trying to aim while being thrashed around upside down that does sound easy so having a hard time aiming is valid id it was the same it wouldn't feel punishing
3. because sometimes u just gotta use what is around
4. because they directly Oppose earth gov would be hard to do that without military
5. because they want u to see it also its still a 3rd person game not a first person game its not gonna be super immersive
6. what do u even mean explain more
8. because being an adult doesn't automatically make u some perfectly reasonable person
Fun fact, you can see Isaacs face in the Kellion at the very beginning if you rotate the camera before his helmet is put on 👍🏻
Yes and what I love about it most, is that before the Ishimura, Isaac didn't have any grey hair.

@@BioHazardAlBatros oh, okay. I thought its the feature of the mouse fix. I must have rembered that wrong :)
Also the early train scene! Trains were safe places in 1, but in 2 it becomes a dangerous, chaotic setpiece almost immediately
Lockers were safes places too. I remember staying in there until I calmed down lol
@@BrawndoQC Lockers? There are no hiding lockers in Dead Space, do you mean bathrooms?

I like to believe that the voice Ellie hears at the end of 3 is actually a hallucination. She's been around the Markers just as much as Isaac after all. But she never experiences any side effects? Bullshit I say.
Doubt it, reason she never has any effect to the marker is because she is completely immune to its signal and effects
It is stated that some humans are completely immune to the psychological effects and dementia of the Marker, be it Black or Red
Maybe Ellie is immune to the marker's effects like Isabel Cho and Lexine Weller.
Same here started with 3 and went back because I loved it so much.

The most lovecraftian part is that Isaac does not win against these being.
In the end, they get what they set out to get.
Dead space 2023 remake was truly one of the best games I have ever played.
Would love to see a full DMC retrospective as you are good at explaining the deep stories of games
Man, Dead Space 3's story was so convoluted and the design choices were so bizarre. I don't find myself replaying it basically ever. Completely unlike the other two.
Dead space 2 will always be my favorite in the series. I played it way back on the ps3 and it still sticks with me.
No other horror game has been able to make me feel like this game did
I havent played it in nearly a decade but i dont recall having that much trouble with DS3’s combat.
Hopefully the remake will expand on this plot point. I’m also curious how they’ll tie it to the other games as well.
As much as I enjoyed myself, Callisto Protocol made me REALLY appreciate the extra mile Dead Space went for it's narrative & world building.
It was definitely the highlight for me.
Please never stop doing these, your videos have legitimately cured my insomnia (in the good way), thank you Gingy
The thing to remember is besides the pulse rifle, there really are no weapons in the game. Isaac is using mining equipment to protect himself.
i've never played deadspace but i've watched so many lore videos.. such a deep and interesting lore man
Dead Space 2 is still my favorite. Im on the edge of my seat waiting for the remake
the multiplayer for dead space 2 was FANTASTIC and needs to be mentioned more
my favourite part of deadspace is when issac said "it's deadspacing time" and then deadspaced all over the place
Isaac not noticing the door being open and him actually pulling in the shuttle were teh conclusions I made. This is reinforced in the second game when nicole tried to stab him but it ends up just being him. The Hallucinations are more real than reality for him
My favourite part in Dead Space 2 is when Isaac saw the first Necromorph, grabbed a laser cutter, and said “it’s deadspacin time!”
It's necromorbin' time!
And then he blew up a moon

Time to create some "dead space " with this comment 😎
one thing i loved about dead space 2 was that, dduring the ishimura segment, it uses your familiarity of established "safepoints" or rooms to breathe in, except, this time, you get ambushed in one, i remember first time playing it, i was like "nice, safe room, time to get that armor upgrade" only to get smacked by a necromorph right as i exit the store, that shit scared me (or was it in 1 that happened?, can't quite remember)
Dead space is one of my favorites sci fi settings. I feel like a good body horror film could be made for dead space and people would love it
I personally feel that dead space 3’s ending and fault’s can be directed to EA as comparatively 3 feels rushed and abruptly killed. And this could be a way for the studio to indirectly point that out ,that they too had been killed off by EA.
Whoa whoa whoa, gotta be careful saying negative things about EA on the internet. You’re just asking for a bunch of dislikes.
I will forever love Dead Space. I hate horror games, but played this game for 70+ hrs the first time I got my hands on it. I loved the lore. It never felt too scary. Which, I know is what the genre is about that's why I don't play them. Plus, the cutter is still my favorite "weapon"
I played Dead Space 3 by myself and I really liked it.
I played 2, then 1, then 2 again, then 3.
This was so great! Would really love a F.E.A.R retrospective video. It's such a great series.
Still find it crazy how much of a step down The Callisto Protocol is from Dead Space.
Ya agreed also kinda ruins the entire end of the game lol
The moment you played the clip of Danik speaking.. I squealed with joy because I'd recognise Kain's voice (from the Legacy Of Kain series) anywhere!
God I love these games so dang good now I wanna replay them all lol
Edit: my fav combination was the rivet gun with a ton of ammo and arcing electricity one with an autoreloader and stasis module on it so that each enemy hit by the arc would be hit with some stasis slowing them down and I'd rarely need to reload.
@@joebeast15 due to the technology, it wouldn’t really be hard to believe that she either got a glass eye or a replacement
@@Xaraeus or it was a plot hole
Thank you for covering this series, it is my favorite survival horror game.
This vídeo should be called my review of the dead space franchise.
im glad the necromorphs end up winning in the end. in so many horror games or horror media in general the protagonists always win no matter how impossible it would be to do so. the necromorphs are beyond fucking impossible to beat. they've been destroying species after species for who knows how long and humans are just more biomass to put on
You are by far the best retrospective youtuber. Keep up the awesome work, Gingy!

I haven't seen many people mention how you can clearly see Isaac is terrified the moment he starts turning around to see Ellie only to let out a sigh of relief when he realizes it's not a hallucination this time.
Why would people "mention" it? Its... the point of the scene. Literally the entire point. Its impossible to miss.
The theme of vulnerability in Dead Space really makes me want to play Doom to feel powerful again 😂
Shit crazy good idea. I never thought about how the planet cracker world would be the perfect weapon against them,
Dead Space 3 isn't a solo game built with co-op. That line hit me so hard, DS3 felt so hard to play by myself and became such a slog.
Bro don’t miss, keep up with the videos love em!
Nice to see all these old games getting talked about again due to the new releases. Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space.
Wish you used more in game audio at some points, the sound design is really great/unique so I feel when you cite a sound(like hunter yells) you should show it. Still great vid
Dead space 2 was the first game i played on the next generation of consoles (PS3) and it has stayed with me all these years
0:46 Play Dead Space 2023 Remake
2010, the birth of famous youtubers. It happens to be the same year dead space got released. One of the greatest vid game ever!
Plus, I discovered 'theradbrad' channel cuz of this game.
I was legit starting to wonder if you were gonna make a dead space retrospective because it would be so cool lmao
He isn't
Gingy should do a retrospective on the F.E.A.R games. They don't seem to get the recognition that they deserve.
So you can get Isaacs thoughts in DS1. they he has a little journal in the inventory/map/log hud
