One of my favorite things was how increasingly angry his screams get over the course of the games when he's stomping on necromorphs. That small aspect really resonated with me because I felt like Isaac and I both just wanted it over.

The third game, has a monster that is a moon, does not have you go back to the Ishimura and use it, to crack open the monster that is a moon, like, come on, it's right there!

But try the Central Line on the London Underground between Bank and Bethnal Green, Eastbound. The sound can be truly horrifying...
Jeff Schmidt, Sound Designer for The Exorcist used recordings taken from microphones inserted in the space between carriages on the trains there, to capture what he described as "metal-on-metal, submerged and compressed - tortured if you will..." Some of these audio recordings were used at part of the final soundtrack...

This video reminded me of Kelly Hurley's [I misremembered] writing on gothic horror. For her it's an instrumental genre, resurfacing in times of crisis, that reflect the horrific crisis in subjectivity that whatever new social force is creating. For the original gothic authors, this was the horror of modern science confirming the body was a material 'thing', unspecial and largely indistinct from the spectrum of the natural world. It's cool to see how dead space combines this scientific register of horror with the specifically late capitalist crisis in subjectivity caused by increasingly dehumanising work culture

I literally keep coming back to this video because of how artful it feels to listen to you talk about dead space. Easily my favorite sci-fi universe and you nail it on the head with the details
My favorite part of this series (3 included) was the psychological and cosmic horror. Like, yeah, it sure is spooky when a scary monster jumps out but what really gets me is that Isaac kept the truth of Nicole's death from himself. Gets under my skin in a way I can't explain. And don't get me started on convergance...
The first time I ever played DeadSpace, I experienced it over the course of a single weekend, while sitting in one of those surround-sound gaming chairs and listening to it in high-def audio. It was the scariest, and most unsettling gaming experience I've ever had.

Awakened DLC: **ACCEPTING OF THE FACT THAT THEIR SHIP IS SINKING, THE DEVELOPERS ALL ADJOIN TO THE UPPER DECK TO PLAY ONE LAST SWAN SONG**
EA forced them to cater.
Dead Space 3 wasn't the devs' idea and vision of the game jackass, EA forced their hand to make it an action coop game as horror games were apparently ''too difficult to market in comparison".
The devs originally wanted to explore more of Isaac's dementia in a SINGLEPLAYER game and make a story around that, but EA didn't allow it. So in other words, fuck EA
@Taaha Ali not really. The desire to keep your livelihood going isn't exactly bad, and desperation is as much part of being an artist as pure inspiration. The idea that every product an artist, or team thereof, produces is pure and free of capitalist requirement is a lie. We all gotta pay our bills. That doesn't inherently reflect negatively on our moral standing.
"flesh as commodity", gives an extra layer of unsettling huh?

If I were going to sing your praises, I'd be here all day.. was going to say my topn (in no particular order) were Resident Evil, Fallout, McGee's Alice.. I've listened to them all a stupid amount of times, but honestly the new best is whatever material of yours I'm listening to at the time. Thank you so very much, Noah. You're a bright spot in my day :D
One fun fact: Isaac's voice actor in Dead Space 2 isn't a new guy specifically cast for the new, more reckless Isaac, but the same one from the first game given more than just grunts and breathing to record. This is why I'm perfectly fine with it -- sure, it's not as spooky, but I can believe the same guy living out another necromorph outbreak would react the way he does in-game, sounding more exasperated than nervous or traumatized. For some people (myself included) a character who uses his occasional speech to say roughly what the player might be thinking at the time is a lot easier to identify with than a mute protagonist, as it can be more believable than silently accepting whatever happens.
In the first game I felt like I was Isaac. In the second, I felt like a puppeteer.
@@nickd7036 To me playing a game like this is symbiotic in nature when it comes to how you feel about the character and their predicament. You play the game both trying to understand and feel the atmosphere and story from your own point of view "what if this was me, how would I deal with the games plot", and issacs, "trying to understand his way of dealing with the plot". Haveing him as a mute to me traded more of the second for the first (which in the case of just how good the trilogy is anyway, isn't a major or even inconvenient minor deal) You focused more on the side characters than issac at most points to try and get a grip of the actual story telling of the game, it felt autonomous controlling him and how he interacted with the other characters, especially on later playthroughs. 2 and 3 gave you a way to feel about HIM. Giving him a personality gave you a way to then not only experience the game primarily from your own perspective, but from his as well, you could now identify with him. Condemn him, sympathise with him, build a bond (or not) with him, and try and work him and his decisions out. It gave me a slightly better way overall to view the story. There are trade offs either way, but like I said, i found it easier to bed in to the story of the games and identify more with who i was controlling and "sharing" the game with in 2 and 3, which in turn enriched the over all depth of those games a bit more from the first. I do truly see them as a natural progression of each other in terms of how they continued the games core mechanics and feel whilst keeping the changes subtle. Great achievement.
@@nickd7036 How could you possibly feel like Isaac when Isaac wasn't even a real character? He had no personality, no voice, not even a face until the very end. He was a blank slate for you to project YOURSELF onto.

Dude, my entire life I have been thinking that someone should do something with that BART noise. I never actually played dead space but it makes me unreasonably happy to know they used that sound.
It makes me so sad that Dead Space and it's creators were shown such disrespect. They were superb titles that defied the trend of homogenizing games and mass market appeal. And then they didn't. Dead space to it's creators represented the end of that stage of their careers, rather than the artistic triumph it was known to be by it's fans.
I wonder how many other seminal titles were likewise stigmatized to their creators. It's terrible to think of.

I'm more in the camp that Dead Space 3's original ending makes more sense in the context of Dead Space 2, what Isaac said about "not being afraid anymore", it makes sense. He's familiar with fighting the necromorphs, and has seen so much of the ugly side of humanity (due to the indoctrinated unitologists) that he lost so much hope in humanity and himself. He already forgave himself for Nicole's death, but he seems more motivated now that he had (and taken) a chance to save Ellie and end the Moon once and for all. I found it inspirational when I played through it all those years ago. After I saw Awakening, I thought the 180 from Bittersweet to Nihilistic in tone was out of place given how they decided to end the 2nd game and kept escalating the theme that Ellie gives Isaac hope all throughout 3's campaign. Maybe I read too much into it and have nostalgia for a game a lot of people dislike, but I still hold my opinion.
Appreciate the Sisters of Mercy feature in the opening. Great video as always

Food for thought, what if Ridley Scott (Alien '79) cut the movie like this:

3rd act: Lambert and Parker were just killed, Ripley rushes to the self destruct and sets it. While slinking through the corridors of the Nistromo to reach the shuttle, the xeno pops up out of the ladder port. Ripley stops, the xeno's face inches around the corner into view...
Cut to exterior view of the Nostromo
Cut to distant view of the Nostromo
Cut to view of Nostromo being a tiny speck in the starfield
A bright flash erupts as the Nostrmo dissintegrates into nothing more than light breifly illuminating the darkness of space.

My point being that this is how I personally feel about how DLC should NOT be implemented; a near 180 degree universe change for an additional purchase. It just feels disjointing.
And yeah, Alien is my favorite movie, the next being John Carpenters: The Thing
Perfect timing. Just completed the trilogy and have been wanting some analysis of the games. Thank you.
The observation of how critical the A) believable setting, and B) unsettling sound design are to the overall effectiveness of the game's horror really shows how critical and analytical Noah is.
After playing the remake, I found myself asking the question if this version of humanity is even *worth* saving. They consume and destabilize entire solar systems for resources, perhaps even more so than the aliens in Independence Day.
It’s fitting that humanity ran afoul of something even more voracious.
The noise of the weapons under vacuum is really just the pinnacle of sound design in gaming IMO. You feel the heft of the weapons through your body with that deadened thump.
the necromorph pieces should have twitched occasionally after being chopped apart and defeated, to underline that they are operating on an unnatural unkillable biology
Surely the best UA-camr there is. He genuinely makes me see games from a new angle that I could never put into word myself.
I believe that, within the games lore, having experience and training in 0g is considered a very valuable skill. It’s why they fly issaac out; he has special engineering training along with other implants like the soldier types.
“Industrial Hell.” That’s exactly how I’ve described this game.
The problem I have with Dead Space 1 is that it's not nearly as good at being as atmospheric and scary as it's trying to be. Every scare in the game is the most loud, obvious, and unsubtle assault on your senses as possible, yet it tries to come off as a slow burn sophisticated horror title. The mechanics and weapons are also just too slick and satisfying to cultivate a creepy horror atmosphere, ironically the game being so fun to play takes away from the atmosphere it wants.
Dead Space 2 gets criticized for being "just an action game" but I think it's just a more honest expression of the what the first game was going for. It's also loud, unsubtle and filled with goofy splattergore but the tone is a lot more B horror instead of A horror and it meshes together a lot better. Plus the weapons, the variety of locales and visuals are just a lot stronger and more engaging. It's much the superior title in my opinion. Normally Dead Space 1 would be more of my jam, but I just don't think it's very good at what it was trying to be.
I’m personally really hoping the remake really understands this…
YES I was wondering when you would upload again! We miss your awesome thoughtful content in these turbulent times in the industry!
I swear, the true horror is seeing you spend ammo on shooting boxes, instead of stomping them open or breaking them with kinesis.
Noah once said that most of the time he plays games on easy. That's probably the reason he wasted ammo

I'm thrilled to see a video in Dead Space in 2019. It's hard to overstate what a great analysis you have done on this trilogy. I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you.
I just restarted playing the series again...
Dead Space was awesome. I remember the first playthrough of the first game. How relieved I was when I saw save stations. It was unnerving, the atmosphere was awesome. And the twist was good. Not entirely unexpected, but good. The only thing I would have as a slight criticism would be parts of the fight system. Sometimes it just felt unresponsive, like not being able to reload if you are not aiming. Maybe that was by design, but it felt clunky at times.
Still, it was certainly the best game. It did so much setting up this universe, backstories and so on.
Dead Space 2 for me is rather close though. The horror wasn`t as good, also because it already was slightly more action focused - and seeing the same enemies way more often kind of dulls the horror of them at some point. They introduced some new enemy types, but some we already knew from the first game. But: I felt the gameplay was the best in the series. Combat felt a bit more fluid, less clunky compared to 1. But every weapon had its own ammo, making inventory management still a thing. It also enhanced on the story and universe. As a player, you learned more about the markers, how they worked, what they to do peoples brains and so on. And the whole term "make us whole" got more information. Where it was more of a creepy sentence we didn`t know exactly what it meant, now it started to come together.
And then ther was 3... not to say I hate it, but it was certainly a mixed bag. I think it had some good ideas. If you go for coop I think it was a good idea to have the characters face different hallucinations the other player can`t see. Especially if you played with voice it was interesting if your coop partner freaked out a bit, where you didn`t know why. It also expanded even more on the universe, the necromorphs. Part of the combat system I also liked, the idea that you can build weapon combinations was interesting. That you only have 1 ammo type though was a big step backwards for me. Because it really made inventory management way easier. Which is to me a bad thing for survival horror.
Still, I am really sad that they basically killed it. What a waste, I think if they handled DS3 better, the whole DS universe would have more to give. At least 1 game more, so to speak.
Your comment section has got to be the most wholesome out of them all. I'm a new fan and it is time to binge watch those goodies baby! Especially while waiting for the processing to go beyond 360p, I like me some crisp sound and visuals.

One of the few channels where I add to watch later any time a new video pops up. I always know a ton of thought and work went into it.
It's a shame that if they had to insist on co-op they didn't just have the players co-op as Isaac and Ellie, who would have had things to talk about at least. Maybe they screwed themselves over by fixating on the idea of Ellie as the main character of a fourth game early on and it stopped them from finding this obvious solution. Particularly if they'd leaned into the hallucinations and the players having to communicate what they were seeing on their screens.
I can't get over how much I like this man's writing. It is a genuine pleasure to listen to, content aside.
I actually liked the crafting system and the ability to make custom guns that matched my play style rather than having a bunch of weapons with alt fires I never use.
And while resource gathering was tedious, it at least made more sense in the story than buying shit from vending machines.

Noah editing might not be UA-cam's greatest, but his writing tho... as usual, a masterwork in the video game essay genre.
Raycevick will be pissed.
@Imba Game
Another guy on UA-cam who does video game critiques. He's interesting, taking the time to discuss the more mechanical aspects of video games.
I’m a bit late but I’m right behind this guys perspective. The 1 thing I remember most about the first dead space was how the game made you feel. It’s unsettling atmosphere. Being thrown into a hulking mass of shifting, clanking steel. Darkened halls and bloodied walls. Corrupted horrors jitter, twitch. Seeking, waiting. You’re alone in space, removed from god. This is hell that resembles a ship. The only way out is In.
Haven’t found anything like this since, not even the sequels.
That said, one of my most memorable moments in dead space 2 was Isaac finding out he’ll need to board the Ishimura once more. This time he needs to confront the darkness rather than survive it. He also tells Ellie that’s where the necromorphs originated. She never knew because she was told some cover up story. The game forces us to see in hindsight at the reality of the situation and it was the first time I fully realised Isaac’s state of affairs and genuinely felt bad for him.
Good long form analysis of the series. Loved Dead Space 1 and 2.
I disagree on your assessment with Isaac. I think his growing confidence in his abilities is due to his history with the marker and his realization that only becoming more focused and fighting as a survivor is the only thing keeping him from becoming insane. He's trying to hold on to the last bits of sanity and humanity (after the deaths and betrayals he's had), and his relationship with Ellie perfectly demonstrates this as he's able to save the one last good connection to humanity he has. .
I thought the silent protagonist route of Dead Space 1 was a lazy and unbelievable as a narrative conceit. It kills the immersion because of his constant silence (especially when dealing with Nicole).
I appreciate the use of sisters of mercy in the intro. Good choice.
you're too kind with the uploads
This man, this incredible man
UA-cam does not deserve him
I wonder if you will make an update video for the Dead Space remake? It came out earlier this year so your thoughts on it compared to the original would be awesome to hear in my opinion.
I came from your dark souls videos which showed up in my recommended feed and just wanted to say it’s clear to see the work you’ve put into these videos! Little changes in editing have changed the production value tremendously over the years while having that core, enjoyable and well throughout voice throughout. Keep up the good work!
I replayed DS 1+2 years ago and both totally hold up. 9/10 to both. Nothing against the very solid RE5 (play it in co-op only) but this is the true "sequel" to RE4. Thank Zodd that Capcom ultimately decided to look at these games closer after the bloated and weird RE6. You really see a change starting with RE Rev2. 7/10 for the still competent enough DS3 and the Wii lightgun shooter. Can´t say that I can recommend the media-tie ins and fuck that story in DS3. Jesus Chris does every single turn fail and don´t get me started on the bizarro cliffhanger ending that was locked away behind DLC. DS 1+2 did so much with little, yet DS3´s narrative tried everything and failed worse than everything in RE6 and that mess had an evil clone but actually not a clone at it´s core.
PS: You see Isaac´s face if you turn the camera in the intro the sequence to the first game.
dead space 2 on ps3 is still a visually astonishing game, and still has best implementation of a hud system ive seen in a game (i hate huds) its also still fuckin terrifying.
RE5 was a good conclusion to the franchise, can't really get into any RE plots past it. RE6 is a solid 3rd person action game with lots of content. RE7 was good but I didn't like the characters and the lack of enemy variety.
Resident Evil 2 Reimagining 2019 essentially reboots the franchise and opens the door to a new canon. I'm fine with that.
Too bad Dead Space wasn't a Capcom property. As bad at times Capcom can be, their no EA or Western AAA gaming company.
What about Resident Evil Revelations?
