James Minor Doomguy shows contempt for the complacency of the Sentinels, and she says “what the DEMONS took from YOU”. An argument could me made for Argent D’Nur and it’s people, but with the story conclusions they made it’s pretty clear what they were going for, they probably just left if open for the people that jumped on 2016 and never bothered with the classics so they wouldn’t be dumbfounded by mentions of a bunny for seemingly no reason.
7:17 They're not demon-made holograms. Rogue elements of UAC had a Hell worshipping cult on Earth even after Olivia's death. It's detailed in the codex entries at some point. Those cults are partly why the Hell invasion of Earth still happened, despite the Slayer's efforts on Mars.
@@macks_ nope not all of them. a lot of uac were still led by Hayden, since they at some point developed the BFG 10k, and still had base(s). it's just like the upper leadership of UAC was corrupting the rest into apathy to become demon fodder
the hell thralls are neat. gigantic demon titans, but they only apparently have value as slaves. it suggests that they themselves have no real capacity for malice and destruction, so they can only be used for their massive size and mobility, carrying hell barges or holding the chains at nekravol. Even when the hell priest is killed, does the titan retaliate? nah, it just puts the barge down and wanders off. They're actual gentle (demon) giants.
"Is this the sequel to Plutonia?!" I am personally convinced that Id took this single phrase, put it through a demonic filter thing, and turned it into code that created ALL of the dlc levels.
1:08 Mick Gordon was originally told that there could be no metal on the soundtrack. The higher-ups eventually caved and let him make the soundtrack the way it was meant to be made. I imagine he just kicked down the office door and started shredding on his 9 string guitar until they gave in.
he explains what happened during the process in his GDC talk, the geist is that id wanted to avoid the steriotypical metal bullshit and he worked around it by distorting the absolute hell out of it
@@JarJarBinks4ever I kind of agree, I hated Doom 2016's soundtrack at first but it grew on me, especially once I heard some absolute bangers like all the Hell music.
I think the higher ups were fine with metal as a concept they just thought if Mick started with it as the base it wouldn't end well. Seeing how dangerously close to Limp Bizkit that track Civvie played is I can understand why they thought that
I was just as cocky. Doom 2016 gave me the false sense of pride as it was much easier to get through on Ultra-Violent and even Nightmare. Just for giggles I tried to play on Ultra-Nightmare and didn't make it past Hell on Earth. This game is brutal but it just makes you want to get better at it. At first I was scrambling around, playing old style Doom. By the end I was a mini, human sized jet fighter with a nuke loadout tucked under the seat

Its actually a classic Baron, if you look at its body in the model viewer, its a bloody pink, not tan/grey. Plus if theyre gonna bring back an older species, I doubt it would be the species thats a glorified recolor.
Better get those tear buckets ready because the Ancient Gods has a double marauder fuckwich which I KNOW will make the scrubs cry harder than anything.
i found it hilarious that missed the fact that the slayer is the classic doom guy. i wore the classic skin in my playthrough and when that cutscene played i legit thought it was just the skin transitioning over to the flash back
r-j-m _lab same! literally wasn't sure and restarted that "level" with a different skin and was pleasantly surprised. (i say "level" because it was just hallways filled with codexes leading to a boss fight. not even just 2 or 3 arenas on your way there.)
Yeah. Actually, that was my first ever doom i 100% completed as a kid. Even to this day I think the ending is the most metal shit I've ever seen in a game.
I think it's overrated. Other DOOM games do what 64 does, but better. What the other games don't do better at 64 is at least mediocre and on par at. The best thing 64 has going for it is its level design. Not layout mind you, level design. But that's pretty much the only thing, and only accounts for when it was made and what system it was made for. If we actually did comparisons with that then 64 would still lose.
@@BigFry9591 Doom 64 wasn't even talked about basically at all until a few years ago so how in the fuck can it be overrated when it was hardly rated to begin with. Also acting like good level design isn't important in Doom is how we get stupid decisions like trusting that snake in the grass Tim Willits rather than recognizing American McGee had all the best levels in Doom.
@@theninjamaster67 The popularity of something has no influence on rating. Something can be highly rated and next to nobody know about it. If there's something that only you know about, and you give that thing a 10/10, then that thing has a 10/10 so far. So regardless, I think it's overrated. And note that I said that the best thing that Doom 64 had going for it was the level design, but I didn't say whether or not it was good. I'd say it's mediocre. However, the atmosphere is beaten by Doom 3, which beats it in the atmosphere. And the puzzles are just atrocious, but I was generous and just sorta left those out. Then there's also the terrible platforming, with inescapable death pits (there's also those 1 inch wide stairs). If we're gonna talk about good level layout or design, then we need to recognize that Doom 64 is a product of its time, and the other games can beat it at whatever it does.
@@BigFry9591 yeah it might be overrated to you, but who cares about what you think is overrated? It’s not my favorite game but it’s not like you’re stating your opinion for any reason other than to be “well.. on the contrary” guy, since it really doesn’t have any impact on anything.
Update: practically every level has at least one Archvile starting from the time they're introduced and they summon like 5 monsters at once. Plutonia 2 confirmed
Something you forgot to mention about the UAC hologram lady. Over the course of the game (of which it mostly peaks during the Super Gore Nest level) she completely drops all pretense of this being some innocent family-friendly thing, outright telling people to "donate all of their blood", let the demons consume their souls, etc, alongside multiple messages smugly saying that the Doom Slayer can't stop the demonic invasion. And then, in the final level, she addresses the demons, angrily saying "WOULD SOMEONE KILL THIS IDIOT, PLEASE!?".
Caleb is the king of anti-cringe. He could literally say the most normal, unfunny things, and somehow it comes off as badass and hilarious. "Mmmmm...Better than Kool-aid..."
Seriously though.... This game should be held on an EXTREMELY high pedestal for pc optimization. It's getting harder and harder to find well optimized across the board pc games, especially in the AAA category. I could go on and on about this..... I just wish more developers took the time and care for the pc community....
Doom 2016 is the most optimized game I've played, running maxed at 1080p with steady 60 fps on with my middling-to-obsolete i7-920 w/1050 ti and no overclocking.
It's absolutely insane, my admittedly rather high end PC never dips below 200fps with RTX on, max detail graphics and 1080p, contrast a terribly optimised game like For Honor where the same PC gets less than 90fps on low detail, no RTX and base 1080p
@@danielhodson6411 Yea man, on my 1080ti I can still max everything and easily push past 200fps somehow. I still end up throttling it down to my monitors refresh rate @ 144hz
I got my PC back in 2016 which even then was considered "lower-medium-end". The fact that a I5-4460 and a friggin' GTX 1050ti can run this game at medium graphic settings at 60 FPS is a accomplishment!

and considering that Samuel mentioned slip gates in the game and the fact that Quake 1 basically played like a proper 3D Doom (and quake 2 almost feels like Doom 3 before 64 and well, the third game. It even had BFG for crying out loud), they might as well merge them into one universe

**Spoiler for an adorable easter egg** In one of the later missions where you’re at the ”soul processing” tower, theres a big hole at the mid/late-mid part of the mission that has a slide/angle at the bottom, forcing you to slide into a combat area and progress through the level, but before you jump down too continue your unholy crusade, look a little to the left, if you don’t see anything use the map to locate the small platform to the left. Funny thing: They told him to make it less metal because it went stupidly fast (218 bpm or something like that) and people in testing just couldn't handle it during gameplay, making them lose focus or just get stressed. He just toned down the speed enough so that wouldn't happen.
Um no, they actually told him they didn't want metal or guitars. And to make the game sound like Doom with out metal or guitars. So he did. Then he added guitars anyway and they were like oh we were wrong.
@@Lowlightt No the OP is correct. I think it's the noclip eternal podcast, during the development of eternal apparently the beats of the music similar to the original quakecon 2018 demo did annoy play testers, so they toned it down
There actually IS a plausible in-story reason for Doomguy ranting: he's been fighting demons for goodness knows how long already, and his mind is more or less almost gone.
@DOAMA In that case, maybe DOOM takes place concurrently with the original Doom? That would explain why nobody learned their lesson the first time, because DOOM *was* the first time.
3 months after liking your comment, I still, at times, when my strength is low and my will weak, play the intro (and the bit with Novik) and instantly grow back into a full-blown killing machine. I went through 7 jobs in the last months, but it was totally worth it.

At this point its safe to say they aren't in-fighting, they're sparring to train for the Slayer's arrival. Unfortunately for them, that's boss music they're hearing.
It caused me some real problems in the first couple levels, enemies were literally stuck infighting each other on the other side of those red force fields. Had to play the same ballbusting section three times due to that, on top of dying a dozen or so times because I was on UV with a controller :P

When getting to that ending...don't forget that there is a season pass with two promised DLCs. So I guess that will wrap up the story a bit better. Thinking about VEGA and what he says when you're in Urdak and all that...
There's also a setup in Urdak where you get several corrax entries about the "seraphim," and then the access panel before you enter the room where you stab the Icon's heart says "welcome, Seraphim"
And i think the pistol is gonna be in those dlc's just incase you missed it from 2016, you can find the pistol in the files and it's neat it shares rifle ammo and does 3 round burst
Yeah everything to do with the father and who the seraphim is pretty intriguing. My takeaway is that the slayer had the spirit of the father injected into him by that makyr which gave him his insane abilities
@Aerial Fork yeah it did throw me off a bit that the game started in the fortress of doom. However i do think there's something more to dr hayden, he was a LOT more sinister in this game than 2016, especially towards the end and the fact that quite possibly hayden is made from makyr technology but that's just me speculating

I get a lot of comments on my Doom Eternal + AGP1 Videos where people mention that You didn't like this game, and I was under the impression to 'cause your anger at the opening 4 levels stuck with the most from this review. Rewatching it now though, I can tell that's not the case - You even say that it all clicked with you by Super Gore Nest. It's just interesting looking back. The loud parts are just what imprints on people the most even when the points are rectified or changed later on.
It clicked for me when I learned an 8 year old was having an easy time on Ultra-Violent… And I realized I had to let Doom Eternal break me so I could properly learn how to play. And by the end… I became death incarnate!
Man I never got that impression at all from this video. I just figured that like most players, he was caught off guard and adjusting to how much different the combat loop and flow of this game is compared to 2016 It takes a little bit for the game to both just click with you and also for you to unlock all the abilities and upgrades for you to start to feel like you can properly fight back Maybe it takes a bit longer than it needs to but overall it's not that bad. For many it's orobab6hust fine. And I feel like Civvie clearly praises the game more than enough. He just always adds cynicism and humor in this way to everything. Eternal being so unique kind of makes this video unique. Myself I love the game. A lot. But I still have criticisms. I don't think it's perfect. A couple of things really bring it down for me. That being said it's still an A grade shooter and one of the best out there. One of the best this generation 🤷🏻♂️
1:10 What Mick Gordon was told was that they didn't want electric guitars and they wanted synths, to avoid memey heavy metal. Mick slowly convinced them to start adding guitar stuff back in. He talks about it in a GDC talk called Doom: Behind The Music (available on youtube).
I read this comment and just pictured every voice clip from every class in TF2 playing at once, yet somehow the Soldier scream is the one you’ll be easily able to hear amongst all the others
Except Engie Sniper Medic and, and overall it applies more to the offensive classes than any other ones. I guess maybe a sniper with a lucksman. Also demoman is deeply in there making the whole thing smell of blood and scrumpy.
Leif Civvie only adds the PRO tag if he’s well... a pro at the game, meaning he knows the ins and outs of the gameplay, design, levels, secrets, etc. It has absolutely nothing to do with his overall aptitude at FPS games or gaming in general. Plus, Civvie has always had enough integrity to show his mistakes ;)
I mean I've accidentally done that in a panic several times. Forgot how big the splash damage radius is, forgot what weapon i had equipped, or just panic shooting at something that was in my face or charging at me right as i turn around.
Man, I remember seeing videos of people saying how easy the Marauder was, but the video was a dude cycling through like 3 weapons at the speed of light with perfect accuracy.
It's pretty easy, promise. You just need fast hands, and if you don't want to swap 3 just go SSG Rocket SSG. As long as you hit the first one you'll hit all 3. If you wanna do it the really hard way you can kill him in one burst, but THAT one IS hard.
Watch the Zero Master speedrun of this game and you can glean the gist of how you are meant to deal with the Marauder. Zero Master admittedly does it with godlike speed and accuracy but the technique would be the same.
"You've gotta shoot the weakpoints. The game never stops telling you that.".....proceeds to attempt to plasma cacodemon, not disable mancubus arm cannons, or freeze/frag combo on the hell knight. I still love you, Civvie.
Egg Boi is there a problem with having different dominant strategies for a wide cast of unique enemies? Especially when the old doom games pidgeonholed you into either circle strafing or funneling enemies until they died
@@AustinRBa but you can still shoot enemies until they die in eternal. The enemies' health are still the same as it was in 2016, the weakpoints are just there to make things easier.

James the Deranged At some point in the game you just ignore the enemy weaknesses and that point is when you get the homing rocket launcher and ballista. The homing rockets tear everything apart. Except marauders.

@@turbochop3300 Probably having other demons as well. That first fight is easy (and in my case I didn't even know the dogs existed) afterwards same for me, I got my ass kicked.
yeah, except that you can shoot a BFG behind your back (facing the Marauder) and he won't block the tendrils, good window opportunity to lay it down on him while he's stunned
@John Laws I watched a video of Hugo Martin playing the cultist base master level on nightmare with a controller. I don't recall him seriously saying the marauder was a bad idea. It was the only thing that kept killing him / he couldn't beat after a few attempts, though.
Tips to fight the Marauder: - You can use the remote detonation on the rocket launcher or (if you can aim it right, but it's harder) grenades/sticky bombs to blow up behind him and bypass the shield. - When you hit him and stop his attack you can quickly switch to the Super shotgun/Ballista to hit him again. Some very good players with precise timing can weapon juggle these 2 and bring him down to 0 health after stopping his attacks once: look it up, there are some clips of it online. - The dog only shows up when you shoot his shield, not that easy to avoid but at least you can see it coming a moment earlier and switch to sticky bombs/super shotgun for a 1-hit kill. - The BFG does not usually work by itself, but if you shoot it above him and then use some other weapon he will block the BFG going behind him and take 2 or 3 ballista/shotgun shots, or even better, block your shots and take damage from the BFG like everything else.
@@Mate_Antal_Zoltan You can time it to hit him with the BFG after stunning him by parrying his attack with another gun. Hitting him with the SSG or Ballista when his eyes are green and then quickly switching to the BFG and hitting him with that will kill him immediately if you don't want to bother with him... The timing is a bit tight because of the wind up for the BFG and the speed of the projectile, but you can move in slightly closer as you switch weapons so that he doesn't recover before the BFG hits him... If you're gonna use BFG ammo on the marauder, this is probably the best method to use.
I cheesed some of the fights by firing the bfg right at him when he jumps on / off of ledges, since he is vulnerable for that animation. Since his ai is really predictable when persuing you, it is the easiest way to kill him with the bfg.
I like how the captions slowly deteriorate from being consciously written and having Civvie's exact intonations pronounced to letting UA-cam auto-captions take the wheel.
To fight the marauder: Eyes turn green, hit him with the super shotgun, then switch to ballista or rocket launcher and hit him with a second shot. Can put one down in under 10 seconds.
you can also ssg, ballista, ssg and so on while strafing around him. that way he he'll be constantly stun locked without ever bringing his shield up. marauder done in 5 seconds. honestly the most dangerous enemies for me are the doom hunters and mancubi. like those can literally suck your health away without having time to react sometimes
See I won't say that....even though I should because the amount of young kids bitching about the game being too hard makes me remember.....these kids do not know what hard games are.....except for dark souls....that shit is hard
While the tutorial messages might seem a bit overbearing, what they do is actually very interesting. Instead of giving you a thing that you have to figure out by yourself, the game sacrifices that in order to gain the ability to never have you fight an unfair fight, as the game puts all the cards on the table every time you fight a new guy so you don't helplessly do trial and error until you find something that you *think* works. Personally i think it's actually very nice to let the player know the conditions for victory beforehand so that all that matters is their gameplay performance.
It kinda left a bad taste in my mouth at first, it started making sense as the game went on though. I'm 100% certain there must be a more elegant way of handling it (I'm not going to pretend I know what that is) but fuck it, there's only so much ground you can break in a single game
I think with so much happening at once, I understand why they had to do that, having played many of the combat arenas that are relentless and fast paced, it can be overwhelming to approach each situation with a new element suddenly thrown into the carnage and mayhem occurring in each level's arenas.
Is it really worth the tradeoff of not having a seamless experience just for you to know exactly what you have to do to kill your adversary? Sounds like a pretty lame argument to me, man. Also spoils the need for looking for these weaknesses yourself and furthermore taking more and more control away from the player, something this game is very good at lol
PiGG_MaNN PiGG Hugo talked about this a lot. This isn’t Sekiro, where the fun is in lots of trial and error to find what works and what doesn’t. The fun is in mastering the experience and becoming a badass. The enemy behaviour isn’t immediately obvious and this game can’t be subtle. There’s so much shit going on, it’s like whispering directions while driving a Lambo.
Well i always thought it was also added as a dumb joke "Un-maykr" because you can use it to unmake the khan maykr. (other than the lore reasons of course, which are great arguments on their own)
@@rallehop4322 in the game it's stated to be Maykr tech, and the design of the weapon is clearly Maykr in origin. So I think we can interpret it as an attempt by the Maykrs to replicate the Unmaker, which was a demonic weapon.

It's kinda hilarious going back to takes from 2020 and seeing all the salt about the Marauder, in light of what came later with the Master Levels and TAG. Even the dual-Marauder fights in those look pretty tame now.

It definitely led him to push himself so, by the time he was able to put guitars in, he didn't really need to. But he bought a 9-string and did it anyway.
I personally think those original mandated and imposed restrictions helped make 2016's soundtrack so damn good, even with them being laxed as development went on, and the lack of them from the beginning of Eternal's development actually hurt the sound's identify in the end. Eternal begins to blend together, and isn't as standout or unique. It's very apparent in the Fortress of Doom, where you have all those choice songs from id's history as collectibles, and you get stuff like Andrew Hulshult's QC stuff, Sonic Mayhem's Quad Machine, and even Mick's own Flesh and Metal and BFG Division and DOOM3's theme which are all really iconic, both in feel and sound.
@@Valanway Yep, it forced him to get really creative technically. To be fair, my taste for crushing metal has waned and I preferred his music from Wolfenstein: TNO where he seemed to not have many restrictions and so could pull out epic acoustic-led folk rock as well as crunching riffs. This might be the wrong crowd, but BFG Division seems to be Gordon's/Doom 2016's Stairway to Heaven. It's the only one I can remember and generally the one people play to demonstrate the soundtrack. A soundtrack can be excellent *and* forgettable so if you say Eternal blends together, I'd say "sure, same with 2016, but it was awesome to rip and tear with and that's what it was there for." That said, shitloads of people listen to Gordon on the daily, so this is just imo.
In 2016 they wanted to do away with Metal. Mick convinced them to let him do a demo to which he created BFG Division and that won them over. I don't think there were any restrictions on Eternal at all which is why there are more typical Metal sound tracks in it.
@@k3rr3k I wonder where all these slightly different versions of events come from. I'm sure I watched a long video where Gordon described the process and how guitars weren't part of it for some time, and how he kind of phoned it in to begin with and had to get his shit together, but maybe I remember it wrong.
@@DaveDexterMusic www.pcgamer.com/doom-composer-mick-gordon-one-of-the-pre-conditions-of-the-project-was-no-metal/ There's an interview on PCGamer about it. Pretty sure that is the real version and everyone else is just making stuff up.
"The Icon of Sin took all of my lives, I was down to nothing before I stopped, breathed, assessed the situation, remembered everything the game's been telling me this whole time--" This right here is the *best* kind of compliment a final boss can receive. Whoever designed that fight, I salute you.
I did it the first time two nights ago. It's a really, really easy fight if you do what I did and just run around the map with the crucible out constantly, hacking down dudes, flame-belching for armour, and then unloading the chaingun on the icon. I died once, and felt a little let down by it. But, thinking back, I call it 'easy', yet i was running around for a good 15-20 minutes and came close to death on several occasions. Urdak, however....oh boy. (Other than the boss, funnily enough. I first-timed that bad boy thanks to the lock-on rockets being overpowered.)
I really dont think the Icon is like that, most of the time he cant hit you if you stay behind the extensive amount of cover that is given to you, you can shot him and he cant shoot you, and you have crucible ammo everywhere to get rid of the other enemies.

'Seeing Doom 64 get a re-release is like seeing someone right a great injustice'
Fucking spot on. Criminally underlooked game.

Plus, Civvie has always had enough integrity to show his mistakes ;)

to me its just the fcking dog, the counter at change color bs is fine
@John Laws I watched a video of Hugo Martin playing the cultist base master level on nightmare with a controller. I don't recall him seriously saying the marauder was a bad idea. It was the only thing that kept killing him / he couldn't beat after a few attempts, though.
Tips to fight the Marauder:
- You can use the remote detonation on the rocket launcher or (if you can aim it right, but it's harder) grenades/sticky bombs to blow up behind him and bypass the shield.
- The BFG does not usually work by itself, but if you shoot it above him and then use some other weapon he will block the BFG going behind him and take 2 or 3 ballista/shotgun shots, or even better, block your shots and take damage from the BFG like everything else.
you can also probably time a BFG shot to hit him while he's doing the swing
The dog also shows up when demons shoot his shield, which is a thing that can happen.
Super cheese, he’s stunned by the grenadine shockwave mod. You can just sword or BFG him if you throw a grenade first

My understanding is that Gordon's original brief was "no guitars", something which he managed to eventually ignore, so it originally wasn't exactly metal but this bruising, distorted synthdown that was metal in effect if not in name.
"The Icon of Sin took all of my lives, I was down to nothing before I stopped, breathed, assessed the situation, remembered everything the game's been telling me this whole time--"
This right here is the *best* kind of compliment a final boss can receive. Whoever designed that fight, I salute you.
If a boss fight makes use of everything you've learned so far, that's super fulfulling
Favorite boss fight ever
Funny enough when I first beat the Icon me and him died at the same time so I had to redo the fight.
I really dont think the Icon is like that, most of the time he cant hit you if you stay behind the extensive amount of cover that is given to you, you can shot him and he cant shoot you, and you have crucible ammo everywhere to get rid of the other enemies.
