Goodbye To Love - Guitar Solo Cover - The Carpenters

- Here is my cover of Tony Peluso's fantastic solo. I recently had to re-learn this solo for a Carpenters theatre show so I thought I would post this up. I used a the face fuzz box model on my Pod HD400 with no speaker simulation. The original would have been a fuzz box straight in to the mixer. Not my favourite sound but to keep it sounding like the original I did the same. Enjoy!
Gear Used:
Fender Deluxe HSS Stratocaster - Bridge Pickup
Line 6 Pod HD400 into Mackie Onyx 1220i mixing desk
Recorded in Logic 9

I’m a Zep, Stones and Who fanboy and I STILL rate this as the most melodic rock solo I’ve ever heard.
At the risk of being repetitive, the way I always understood the story of this solo was that Richard Carpenter asked Tony P if he could lay down a heavier guitar solo on this tune because he wanted it to sound less "pop" and more "rock." In 1972, something like this was almost unheard of from a squeaky-clean pop act, but Richard wanted the "fuzz guitar" solo, and the rest is history. Probably the advent of the power ballad. Very well played, by the way.
Good point - this is the Advent of the power ballad !!! 💪👍
According to a British documentary, it was Karen who ask him to do it.
@@lindaclark4997 In a TV documentary, Richard told how Karen resisted being made to “front” the band and just wanted to sit at the back playing the drums.
@@lindaclark4997 Apparently not, according to Close to You: Remembering The Carpenters Richard had the idea, but Karen was the one who knew Tony and called him up for the session. From an interview segment of both Richard and Tony.
And Tony was a friend of Karen’s so somewhere along the way she either introduced him to Richard or passed his demo tape to her brother hoping to get some work for Tony P
From hearing this over decades this Peluso solo still the greatest ever. It was and still remains the significant moment and step change for rock guitar evolution. Has always been a frustration on the fade out way too early on the original recording.
i love this guitar lick i never want it to end!!
One of my most remembered guitar solos of all time. Especially part two. Nicely done.
Thanks John!
Even as a kid in the 70s I remember listening to this guitar solo over and over ... I never get tired of it.
Nice someone has taken the time, this solo was groundbreaking in pop music. Richard carpenter, who suggested that the solo should have distortion, received hate mail from their fans. It's said that this song was the very 1st power ballad, combining a soft ballad with rock style guitar.
Fantastic stuff ,
One of my favourite solos ever, and I listen to all kind of rock!
The best guitar solo ever for me, and you done it justice my friend.
Paul Cheeseman Cheers Paul!
I think it´s cool that you can hear a FUZZY guitar sound on a Carpenter´s track. Very melodic solo.
Calling Occupants
Game changing moments!!! Rock and Roll would never be the same
My buddy Tony Paluso.........RIP my friend!!! Such a super sweet person....
Yes. Such a close buddy that you spelt his name wrong! Busted!
That Tony guy was one skilled guitarist, ahead of his time. Wonderfully an beautifully crafted!
This was indeed one of the greatest solo guitar riffs of all time, but never given the credit it deserved, by so-called music critics - probably because it came from the the squeaky clean Carpenters. And funny enough, the late Karen Carpenter is still acknowledged as having one of the greatest voices of all time. Well done, Dave, you nailed this song absolutely perfectly and proved that you are a great guitarist yourself.
Thanks Joburg. Glad you liked the video.
This and Rikki don't lose that number are my fav guitar solos!!!!
Hard to believe that this once was the hardest rocking guitar on AM radio.
This solo impacted and changed my life as s kid! Seriously -
Mine too
Me too. It remains a classic, beautifully constructed solo.
Peluso is my favorite also. He's such a fabulous soloist, and once again proves that you don't have to play everything super fast; instead, it's vital that you play what is tasteful and fits the song, and no one does it better. I don't care as much for technical skills, as creative skills, but this dude certainly has an ample supply of both in his arsenal.
Perfect!!! Karen is smiling down on you! 😍
Im no guitarist but play a bit of bass..but i know a damn great solo when i hear one..and this is one..thanks for sharing! x
Gosh .. im savin this one .. straight to the pool room .. totally fabbo .. there's hope for us all ..thankyou 😁
Amazing how distorted that solo was and yet how well it fit.
just wonderful! One of my favorite songs and guitar solos ever! Tony may be gone but his beautiful guitar solo lives on!!
Perfection... both in tone and melody!! thanks
One of my favorite guitar solos of all time! Thanks for the demonstration!
Thanks for this piece of magic. I revisited this song a couple of weeks ago. I was watching a youtube video interview with Richard Carpenter. He said that "their fans" thought that they had sold out. I never heard about it or remember the mini controversary this song brought about. I think even by that day and age standards those solo licks would have been pretty tame. Compare it to any Cream or Floyd or Black Sabbath or Deep Purple riffs. But people expect that type of guitar work for those bands. It was so different and surprising for that type of guitar work to appear on their middle-of-the-road music.
Simply superb! Applause from Brazil!
Thank you for keeping that priceless solo alive!!!
So clean and right on!!
Wow! Fantastic!
These solo were, I am convinced, the precursors to the style of Boston. Distorted guitar playing gorgeous melodies.
Bravo, flawless.
Wow. Both are great. The 2nd one sent chills down my spine. And I'm a carpenters fan too.
Spot on. Can’t play it any better than that. Love this solo. Thanks for doing it.
No problem!
A difficult piece to play and you did it beautifully.
Nailed the tone !!
Blown away!!
Thank you xx
A classic and much-loved solo and you have done it poud. Brilliant.
I’ve never got tired of these guitar solos since hearing them when I was 12 in 1972. I’ve been playing air guitar to them for 40 odd years …. It would be nice if I could actually play them for real 😂 Brilliantly done my friend Quinny
Absolutely beautiful ❤
Perfect and fantastic solo, one of the best and I am a blues/rock fan!!

Excellent !!!! Best out of any of the covers on UA-cam ---!!!!! That song was the first ever to use " Distortion "
Very useful, Dave. Thanks. I have to play this in a theatre show soon so this is a great timesaving reference. Beautifully played by the way.
wow …brilliant just what i needed …came here for Alan Murphy licks and found this !
you are a very talented guitarist .
That is brilliant, we'll done sir.
Great performance! Good way to maintain Tony and Karen music legacy alive thanks
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it, I used to play in a Carpenters theatre show a few years back. Great music.
Well done.
Very good cover, you nailed it! Congratulations and bravo!
Cheers Tom!
Bloody glorious! 😁👏👏👏🙇♂
Great video
Good job!!
Dude, this is fantastic. This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. Most people focus on all the real common stuff and this is a somewhat obscure set of guitar solos that most younger people aren't even aware of. This is so cool. I can't wait to sit down and try to learn it. Thank you. Beautiful looking Strat by the way.
Cheers! Glad you liked it.
Well done, Dave
Lovely job my good man.

Dave Scott Cheers Dave!

No Axe
Most excellent!
Great job! Great fuzz tone too…
Well played sir.
Awesome job 😎👍
I've told many people that the best rock guitar solo was in a Carpenters song. I've been laughed at. It's certainly the most delicious. Dave, yours is the best rendition of it on UA-cam.
Thanks Olaf! Much appreciated.
I have to and people look at me and go, yeah, right. But it's true.
PERFECTION!!! 💪👊👊💪💖
Cheers!
"THANKYOU & GOODNIGHT!" 🎤😉
Done Tony proud.
perfect
Perfect! Thanks for putting this up! I wish it didn't fade and lasted 5 more minutes!
Very good.
Wonderful :-) Thank you for sharing :-)
gooooood job!!!
Fantastic Dave as ever! Authentic sound in the amp too! I believe this was the start of the rock ballad.
+nicedog1 Cheers Mike, I've heard a few people crediting this as the start of rock solos over ballads. It's a great melodic solo although I'm not a fan of the sound they used for the guitar.
No, it sounds like he has just gone straight into the desk as you say.
Damn dude you nailed it..
