- This is a reaction video to the Carpenters performing "Goodbye To Love". A wonderful love ballad written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. This was a huge hit getting to number 7 on Billboards HOT 100 singles chart in 1972. What makes this song unique for the time was Richard had Tony Peluso play a fuzzed out guitar solo for the instrumental break making the song one of the first hard rock power ballads.

How on God's fine earth did Tony Peluso come up with that solo virtually improvised? Genius is an overused term, but this certainly borders on it.
Tony Peluso who played it said it was all Richards idea, he was also brilliant.
Hi Bruce ... Adding that guitar solo was simply marvelous. Your ears perk up when Tony begins playing it and it is a WOW moment! Enjoy and rock on ...
@@drivingwithtodd1781 And you’re correct about Karen, you may have taken my word that I always use to describe her voice and performances…magic 😘
He was Brilliant..
@@dixiehuston4869 , yesssssss !
My favorite by the Carpenters !!!!
I am not a musician. I do not make music professionally or work within the business, and I do not know anybody who is in it. But, even though I do not play guitar, I know this fuzz guitar solo note for note, chord for chord. It has stayed with me for 50 years, and it is not going anywhere!
The very first power ballad !!!
Oh my Good God but that harmony. Never ever has been duplicated... need to give Richard his due, too.
Absolutely
One of my favorite solos ever!
When I grew up in the early 70s, It was uncool for a guy to love The Carpenters or, frankly, anyone who had a legitimate good voice. I adored Karen's voice but could not come out, so to speak, to my friends. Yes I loved Led Zep, The Who, Yes and all the great rock groups of that time but for me it was and still is all about the voice, arrangement, and orchestration. My opinion but in the history of music she is the finest female contralto of all time. To all those friends who thought it was so "gay" for a guy to love this music, I say, now, confidently, you guys didn't know a @#$%^^ about music and still don't. It seems now all the world is recognizing the brilliance of her voice.
This was the first power ballad not just one of the first. Straight line from this song to stuff like My Immortal by Evanescence.
Karen was the queen of ballad singers. Richard knew this and would arrange songs that weren't ballads as if they were, and Karen would then hit them out of the park vocally. One example of that was the first Carpenters single, a cover of the Beatles' Ticket To Ride. No one ever could sing a big band era torch song like Karen. Sadly she recorded very few of those, but check out her 1975 performance of the 1938 Sammy Fain standard I Can Dream Can't I, with orchestration by 50s bandleader Billy May. It's glorious.
Classic!! I heard that The carpenters got a little grief back in the day for the guitar solo. I still loved it. also.. Thanks Todd❤
Hi Kim E ... I did read that fans were very disappointed with the additon of the fuzz guitar used in the song. They were afraid the group was going into a heavier direction. Still it was a monster hit. It is a super song and the lyrics are very touching. Take care Kim ...
You're right, die hard fans pitched a bitch because of the "Power Ballad" Goodbye To Love. Richard was/is and amazing arranger and is responsible for their success as well as Karen's magnificent voice.
@@steveyoung1224 yes 100%
Ich kenne diesen Song schon Jahrzehnte und mochte ihn schon immer . Hab ihn dann aus den " Ohren " verloren und jetzt nach langer Zeit wiedererlebt . Unbeschreiblich , ein wunderbarer Zauber . Beautyful
Gratuliere,...ganz ähnlich mein Empfinden zu diesem Song...Danke
@@edmundkaiser9395 , ........ so ehrlich , so tief in der Empfindung und so wunderbar gesungen , Traumhaft . Beste Grüße ;-)
Your joy is infectious..You're a joy to watch...Thank you also for all the facts you shared..
Hi Dixie ... Thank you so much for your wonderful compliments. Very much appreciated. Enjoy and stay happy ...
Ey up Todd. What can I say, just another great pick. I'm a bit sorry to say that, way back when, I dismissed this as being a lightweight pop song but when all said and done I was a long-haired wannabee biker who idolised the Stones and the like. To make it worse my mam loved this song and had a couple of Carpenters LPs so it just wasn't de rigeur to like them. However, listening to it now when I have received a degree of musical education, including from yourself, it really has impressed me and yes that fuzzy guitar is ace. Karen is so elegant and has a lovely voice and the rest of the band are real tight and slick and all of them are as American as apple pie (imho). Once again Todd you have broadened my horizons. Cheers mate and keep on truckin'.
You go Todd! Excellent background on the song and review.
Notice how long the phrases are 🎉hat she sings without a breath.
Thank you for your reaction. I hope you will also react to their song, "You're The One" . 🍩☕
Thanks for your reaction. I noticed you smiling throughout the song, just like when I listen. Maybe I'm greedy, but there are a few more songs I'd like to see you sample. For a pure voice like Karen's, try Traveling Boy- a solo by Art Garfunkel backed by the incomparable Wrecking Crew . For pure rock fusion, see if you can sit still while listening to ELOs version of Roll Over Beethoven. You've done some Paul Revere which were great, but the list is incomplete without the anti drug song, Kicks. Cheers!
Ground breaking stuff
When I was at school we listened to whole thing and then we expressed opinions you just keep jumping in all over the place an spoiling the song behave properly, I'm so grateful for the public school education
the guitar solo was unique/great. Now ask yourself how many metal heads would listen to the entire catalogue of the Carpenters and claim they're no good except for this song? yawn.....
What's the point of doing a "reaction" video to a song that it is very likely you have heard numerous times before. These things only mean something if it is genuinely your first time of hearing it otherwise it's not really a reaction. I'm not convinced this song was unfamiliar to the "reactor".
No point in this if you want the guitar solo.
