Imagine standing live in the room during this demo full of magic.
I have both. I prefer the Fulltone most of the time. They all have there place. The Strymon really does sound amazing. It just doesn’t have that mojo or whatever you want to call it that tape has. The Fulltone is like a musical instrument in its own. The Strymon does have a really nice stereo sound. You can’t just hear these played on UA-cam and make a decision you have to hear them in person to really hear all the nuances. You def can’t go wrong with either but if your a delay fanatic then well obviously GET BOTH! What I have noticed the most between them is the Fulltone never gets in the way of what your playing. It decays very natural. The Strymon seems to stumble on itself and get in the way more. Hope that makes sense.
The Fulltone sounds glorious. (as it should for $1200)
Matt Evans 2,000€ ... 😱
I would be inspired by both of these. I actually prefer them both in specific settings. Sometimes that extra clarity is really appealing; sometimes the rounder tones are the perfect kind of mellow. Both are wonderful to my ears.
Lovely demo, just ordered an el capistan looking forward to trying it, thanks for posting the demo.
If you cannot afford the Fulltone but have an analog mixer, give the digital thing it's own channel, meaning the output of the pedal is sent to the input of a channel on your mixer. This of course can be mixed in with your mix, but then "send" on that same channel back to the digital whatzit. Feedback will make it sound more analog.
Convincing but remember this is how it sounds on recording. The feel while playing is a different animal.
You are so right and most don’t understand that is where the inspiration comes from.
Great point. I feel the same way about playing with my outboard Fender Reverb Unit vs something like a Topanga or True Spring pedal. It's not even so much that the Fender Tank sounds immensely better, but the feel makes all the difference.
Very nice...I have a Flint that I love and think I need to try this one too, sounds great and close enough to the real thing here.
I had the flint first and then got the el cap. I initially liked them but my appreciation for them both has grown over time. I feel like I know them both very well now and can get the sounds I’m looking for quite naturally. Took a while to get familiar though.
The el cap is more complex in its secondary functions than the flint. So took longer to get my head around. The secondary functions are really important I think in getting the most from it. I don’t love having to do the two button thing on it to change. Whereas on the flint, it is a once in a blue moon thing.
The Strymon certainly sounds colder - not necessarily harsh, but it is sharp. The TTE is warmer, rounder and has better separation between input and repeats (albeit subject to settings). Obviously you're paying for these differences, and on those terms the Strymon likely wins out, but I can't imagine gear heads are going to fondly reminisce in years to come about their El Capistan in the same way they might about the TTE. The El Cap provides excellent emulation, but the TTE really inspires as an instrument in its own right.
I wonder how the Fulltone compares to analog delay.
Fulltone no question but that El Cap is great too.
True tape delay (when fully functional) sounds amazing. Many of these clone pedals (not all) sound really good, fit on your board, and very rarely breakdown. Tape echo units do, do something special? The question is, are you using your delay as a full-on instrument, or texture?
I recorded the tte .. you notice every damn nuance in the mix , even more so with a decent pair of headphones or monitors , I can't speak on the el capistan , but the tte is a pain in the ass to maintain , fix or get serviced plus tape hiss plus all the other issues that goes into something organic , it's like a monster you learn to tame
@@delaydude ,man where I live I can't find replacement tubes or tape any ideas on replacement parts that's not directly from the site so I don't have to pay massive shipping charges?
@@delaydude the problem is I live way over seas and it takes forever to ship things and its expensive but thanks for the help greatly appreciated guess I just have to wait for the fulltone branded parts
Fulltone is awesome but can't really drag it around for stage. El Cap is My go to tape delay. Not to complex. Super clean
Strymon comes as close as ANY of your other demos! The others paled in comparison but Strymon is so close! Not sure of the price for the Fulltone but I’d imagine the price is higher than the Strymon (never thought I’d say that!) 😂
Great great comparative! Congrats!
Wow what a comparison!! I would not be able to tell the difference blind! Thank you so much. Is there any chance you can share the El Capistan settings for each clip?
Excellent thank you so very much!
Please listen this clip again on good monitors. Your would not tell the difference on deaf test on deaf mobile/laptop speKers.
Confirmation bias. He made a version of this that didn’t say which was which and I got it all wrong. You want to believe tape is better so that’s what you hear. Of course playing is a different matter, in terms of feel and response.
The difference is negligible but there is a difference. The El Cap sounds digital in comparison -- something to do with the way it saturates. The tape unit in this vid has an audible midrange hump vs the el cap. The fulltone sounds better but Im not sure the difference is worth the price tho.
Stick a boost, like the Xotic EP booster, and you get a lot closer. Strymon has the tape emulation down but the boost of the physical tape machines is part of it. There was a "That Pedal Show" episode where this was covered.
On the El Cap, if you dial in some tape age and a little reverb, it takes that digital feel off.
Get the Belle Epoch Deluxe. It has the exact circuit topography (preamp/voltage/record and playback amplifiers) of an EP3 with only the tape replaced by dsp. Gets incredible harmonic saturation, especially with sustain cranked.
@Jimmy Wijaya I've made my peace with strymon... just got a volante and i'm digging it :) still no tape echo but it's close enough for govt work. plus the volante has a JFET preamp front end that you can drive with helps a lot.
Would love to see the TTE vs the Replicator.
Great comparison
Both sound very similar. Any sound advantage that the Fulltone may have, and it is surely very small, would be entirely wiped out in a mix with other instruments, vocals, etc. either on a recording or live. Given the price difference, reliability and and the lack of any required maintenance, the Strymon is the clear winner. Now, how does the El Cap stand up to the Belle Epoch Deluxe?
delay dude in a week or two I will have enough saved up for the BED or EL CAP. Cant decide... what would you pick?
Awesome video, thanks!
Fulltone!
The Fulltone burns the Strymon into the ground. Strymon is brittle while the Fulltone is very organic. It becomes very apparent when you are in the same room. Also the feel is completely different. As for those who think it won’t matter in a mix think again.
I spent enough time with my El Cap to make it sound identical to my old Fulltone TTE. You couldn't tell the difference in the room. I'd bet you anything.
@@jcshirke I’ll bet I could. I would agree that most could not.
Just picked up el Cap with an expression pedal and its replaced my entire pedal board..
Just picked up an El Cap and it did my laundry and vacuumed my house.
Just picked up el Cap and it replaced my wife and all my sex dolls.
Like comparing a lesley cabinet to a ventilator. You cannot hear it on youtube.
You have to listen in a good audio format, or be there to understand.
How great is the el cap .
Wish i could afford the fulltone, but where would i put it on my board
On top. Like a picnic basket.
Fulltone is warmer, ans should be
Love this. Surprised by how similar they are. Are you reamping the same signal through both units?
Having heard the both of 'em, I think I prefer BBD delays after all.
A lot of people have an idea about what tape sounds like which isn’t the reality at all. I just saw a video of a new tape echo and somebody complained in the comments ‘why would I pay $2000 for that when it just sounds like a digital delay?’
The real difference between digital and tape only becomes apparent (to my ears) on slap-back settings. The long delays of good digital units are very close to tape. Something amazing happens with a loud, short repeat using tape.
Through my AKG headphones they sound ... same :)
at the end the oscilation sounded warmer on the large unit but otherwise El Cap is now on my list to get! Thanks!
Strymon!!!
Wrong! Fulltone beats it EVERYWHERE in sound!!!
I wish I could say there is no difference, but...
I prefer el cap :)
That’s because your deaf.
Foultone !!
