Half Golf Swing for Control & Consistency

- Swinging hard at a golf ball may deliver a good shot from time to time, but it can also get you into trouble and be inconsistent. Try a half swing with more club and dial in some distances with more control and confidence.
The positions we feel the club in our swing are often different from where they really are. For example, my “half swing” is still quite long and deep, yet the effort I put in feels much less, and more controlled than my full swing. So don’t get stuck on where your club is and focus more on where it feels like it is ☺️

I highly recommend the Half Swing Technique. Thank You
I have never been very flexible, so on my "full swings" it "feels" as if my hands are just above my shoulder joint. I have utilized a "half swing" for years after a friend of mine taught me a wind knock down shot utilizing similar principles. I found the knock down shot to be a lot more reliable and accurate, so I began using it for most of my shorter approach shots from wedges up to a 5 iron. With my half swings, the rule of thumb for me, is two clubs more (It may differ for others depending on quality of contact, technique & swing speed).
For example, on a good day my "full" 9 iron will land and rest at 135-140 yards. So on my "half shot" (Which feels to me as if my hands are just above my waistline. In reality my hands are half way up my ribcage.) my 7 iron half swing will land and rest 135-140 yards away - with more accurate results.
That’s excellent and I’m so glad you found something that works well for you and is consistent! I appreciate you sharing watching and sharing your experiences! 😊
Subscribed. I like your lessons...they are quick and concise.
Wow! Thanks ☺️ I appreciate the support and I’ll try and keep them coming! I’d love to hear how your game progresses ⛳️🏌️♂️
My brother swings his club as hard as he can…he just has no control. I agree with your premise. Half swings are key.
For sure! It also spends a lot less energy and makes the game feel easier ☺️
Solid tips Greg! Consistency is neglected so often. You have great swings btw !
Thanks! I’m working on shortening the swing a bit, but as long as the ball goes where I intend it, lol 😊
Excellent video, once again!
Thank you. Lessons learned are lessons we should share ☺️ I appreciate your support and I look forward to our next round whether on the course or on a sim 😆
Great video , got right to the point without all the typical BS 👍I just subscribed
Thank you, Steve. I appreciate the kind comment and the sub! ☺️
Thanks for the reply but I still don’t c a half swing but I’m going to give it a go 👍
Lol. I know. I get a lot of wrist angle (working on it). I think you’ll like adding the shot to your game. It can give a lot of confidence and is especially good within 100 yds to back pins, rather than taking a full lob or sand wedge, a partial PW or 9 is a nice option to try. Thank you for watching 😊
"Half swing" was really your full swing with a much smoother tempo. I do the same thing with my imaginary half swing and always seem to get good results. We may be deluding ourselves about the length of the swing but our brain thinking its a half swing somehow makes it work.
Absolutely! I do have a lot of wrist hinge here and I’ve been going through a swing change as of late. Even attempting a half swing can teach us a lot about our swing in general. You nailed it!!!
Would I have trouble stopping on the green with lower spin?
A half-swing might spin less than a full swing, but a good strike is still key. This is why small pitch shots can still check up. Ensuring your grooves are clean and you are using a quality urethane cover ball should still produce good backspin. Actually, we often see pros use these abbreviated swing to minimize spin so the ball won’t spin back off the green. I do play for a bit more roll out on the partial shots though.
Great, but half golf swings looked more like 3/4 arm swing and full club swing which the club shaft passed the horizontal line and a full shoulder turn, but I think the point was to take more club than you need and swing less than full swing and hit within yourself and don't try to hit too hard for control and accuracy, instead of taking the correct club and hitting the perfect shot for the distance of that club, or under clubbing and trying to hit too hard for loss of control and accuracy.
Exactly! Optimal top position can be different for various golfers as we see from Tony Finau to John Daly. I tend to swing long, but the effort (in my mind) is reduced, compared to my full swing. Personal feel is the point and the “feel” of a half swing to accomplish the results you mentioned! Thanks so much for deepening the conversation and offering a perspective that folks can identify with ☺️
@@GregsGolfShack Yes I get your point, to play within oneself, with the partial swing for control and accuracy is better than a uncontrolled and inaccurate full swing.
good stuff, 17 subs and over 100 views on videos? Come on people, it costs nothing to sub and like a video you watch. Lets help Greg build this thing.
Thanks so much ☺️. Hoping folks can learn something new and grow the game!
@@GregsGolfShack I was going to try this today but I chickened out. I'll need to run some shots in practice to be confident but I do like the premise.
@@jeffwolfrey For sure! It can be risky to change up our strategy. Definitely hit a few on the range and see how it feels 😊
Is this thumbnail your profile picture? They look the exact same. Very good picture.
Thanks ☺️ Yes, I did snag that profile pic from my thumbnail, lol.
Doesnt he watch his video before he posts? His partial swing was the same as his full swing. What the heck?
Results are what matter. My half swing is more about tempo and force rather than swing length. I had a lot of wrist hinge back when I filmed this so it still looks long but my lead arm did not travel as far between the full and half swing.
That’s a “half swing?” But we get the point.
Lol, yeah 🤣 I tend to have a long backswing, but the effort/power level, for me, feels like a half swing. Feels vs reals I suppose 😉
Sorry but your swing didn’t look any different to me watch your own vid
Thanks, it’s the “feeling” we’re after ☺️
As mentioned in the video description, I tend to have a long backswing, but the effort level, speed, and general feeling is of a partial swing. Hope the tip helps!
