Thank again Alex. I was really struggling to get my grip to sit correctly. This simple tip of putting the club on your shoulder and gripping it from there has helped immensely. It locks in just nicely and not tightly. Hitting balls in the backyard my whole swing now feels smooth with much better rythem and ball striking a lot more consistent. Unfortunately been in lockdown . But will hit the course on Friday and see what happens. :) So yes grip is probably the most important part of the swing.
Figuring out that I needed a stronger grip for my driver fixed my slice in minutes. Strong strong strong makes a huge difference. Havnt sliced once since implementing the focus
That grip check at 8:15 was the most useful thing I've seen on UA-cam in months. My draw magically returned today (after a couple of years of cutting the ball) by putting that to work (even with the driver). Thanks for that.
I have been using this grip for a couple of months now. Total game changer. No more nasty slices. Straight most of the time. I can even produce draws, when I have to. Excellent feel for the clubhead. Great stuff, that.
3 comments, Alex. First, I used your video on the driver by placing the club at take away along the swing path and right shoulder leaning down. Not only was I hitting range balls 220-230 into rough but dead straight. Fantastic tip. Second, I used your video on setting up my irons by positioning ahead of the ball and my weight on my left side. Once gain, longer and straighter distance with everything from my 52 degree up to my 4-iron. Finally, I used your video on chipping with my 56 degree around the green by making sure my club came back straight along the line of the chip and not outside or inside. Just worked perfectly. That's the complete picture. If any of your subscribers are not doing these 3 tips, they are missing swing improvements that will change their game for the better. Thank you, Lou
Alex, tried the "strong grip" on the course for first time today. Surprised by the results. Shots were straight and felt like the club had more "sling" through contact. Thought the grip would make extreme hook shots but was shocked that this worked so well. Love your content, Alex.
Wow Alex, that was SO WELL explained, it makes so much sense. I am a 68y/o older, long time golfer, and my game has never been better recently, I am roughly playing around a 17h/c - with much more golf playing time these days now that I've retired, but this is a part of my game I'm trying to hone, always been a fader but really trying to learn how to draw the ball more, and I'm starting to appreciate just how important the grip is for this. - Thank you very much, I will be putting this into practice.
Just a general comment Alex. Have watched a lot of different people explaining golf tips, believe your “simple” delivery and easy practice tips, have helped my golf game the most. Love all your content! Keep it coming! Rich
This is the most important video you have done, in my opinion. Getting the proper grip is what changed my game. Awesome Alex. Hell, sometimes I have lousy grip days.
Switched my grip to reveal my knuckles and wow, the difference on my irons has been awesome! My driver needs work but that’s more of a swing thing there.
Hi Alex, I view almost every UA-cam videos that you post. For this one, I'd like to add my observations about how I play as far as gripping is concerned. I am new to golf and my handicap is really high at 30 (I took up golf almost two years ago after my 60th birthday). Thus, I have been fighting some physical limitations to date (I have succeeded to fix my SI joint instability and today 18/04/2022 is my second club comp without pain). Needless to say, while living with that (mainly because nobody was able to pinpoint as to why I was really not able to keep up with my playing friends), I could hardly play let alone practice. I am right-handed and when I walk people notice that my right shoulder is markedly lower than my left shoulder. My golf grip is strong as I can see almost 3 knuckles of my left hand. The crease of my right hand is pointing towards the corner of my left shoulder. At the beginning of any club comp at around 7:30am, after usually a minimum of warm-up stretches, with a setup to promote a draw, despite aiming straight down the fairways ahead, my first drive goes straight and fades a little, but 25 degrees right from straight ahead as aimed. The next shot is usually a 5-iron and with a similar result. And then, without changing anything, my ball slowly goes straight. If I start by aiming left from straight-ahead things go awry without any predictable pattern. So I think that I am comfortable with my grip and that I should do at least 30 mins warm-up on the range before I start any comp round. Just want to share my story! Keep up the good work, Alex.
i have had a slice problem for way more than a decade by now, last year i had 4 (or so) lessons, and the coach (i'm a leftie by the way) had me wrap my left (bottom) hand so far under my left hand knuckles were pointing at approx. 7:30 on a clock face. recently i'd started to get my slice creeping in again, as i went through the usual suspects, after quite some time, and in desperation, i went for doing the opposite of what i was taught, and wrapped my left/bottom hand so far around (clockwise) it showed ALL 4 knuckles, with my thumb pointing at 2:15 on a clock face. it (may have ) cost me 10/15 yards on my best drive, but on average 5/7 yards, but i'm straight as an arrow, and after a decade plus (and i'm being kind at that, very kind) i'm sticking with STRAIGHT, believe me. the grip has caused me to have less of a backswing, but knowing i'm gonna be straight has allowed me to strike the ball with far more confidence. i play on a very tight course and was sick of going on the nature trail. i guess next time on the range i'll try the under grip on my left hand with a shorter backswing and see if the shorter backswing WAS the CURE. but at the end of the day i've got the UGLY grip to fall back on, hopefully proving one 'fix' does not cure all. i look at jim furyk and think, i'd love his ability but hate the swing, but in the end, i'd obviously take the second if the first came with it.
I was laughing, literally laughing, after my first drive with my new “show me the knuckles” grip. My consistent 225 yard, 20 yard right slice drive turned to 250 yard, neutral to 5 yard fade. That simple, that immediate. Massive thanks
I thought my grip was strong enough but strengthened my grip on some short irons today based on your tip, and it really helped. Seems like I'm always tweaking something!
I sliced my drive my whole life, i'm 59 now since changing to a strong grip last year after watching this, I've hit them long and straight ever since... :) Thanks
I can work the ball both ways, playing with a weak grip. However, I don’t recommend this for everybody. I don’t have enough right side bend, or rotation to play a strong grip. I encourage people to try and hit a fade, with a strong grip. Then, try and hit a draw, with a weak grip. You’ll figure out a lot about your swing. I agree with experimenting with “extremes” in golf, in order to find middle ground. And you’re right! Club face is KING, in this game.
When I really go at the ball, being a leftie, I tend to really crank down on my right hand and so going to a weak grip really help me straighten out my shots. Otherwise, anything "stronger" would yield a good pull out of my swing. Great video!
Such a solid video! I tend to hook my driver when I try and kill it because I grip hard and have a strong grip.... usually when I am mad! When I am more neutral and have a softer grip...much better.
dude this is my missing link. after 20 years of a weak grip watching this yesterday i went to the range and instant great results. hit a full bucket not even one fade only straight and draws. going with a neutral grip now thanks to you!
Excellent video on grip something I do a lot is aim more right when I use a strong grip to get the draw more center and weaken my grip a bit and aim slightly left of target for the fade
Nicklaus played a neutral left grip ( club diagonal across palm) and a weak right hand grip. I play with a left hand grip with 2-3 knuckles and a weak right grip. I can hit the ball longer and straight.
Excellent, if a part 2 follows and I were the golfer it would be about opening or closing the club face to go left or right, alway the same grip always the same swing.
I hit a big slice off the tee, then I hit a big hook off the next tee. Then pretty much alternate between those on the way round. With an occasional straight one thrown in there every few holes.
@@AlexElliottGolf it’s on the strong side of neutral. My Pro is happy with it. He also tells me my driver shaft is too vertical on downswing, wants it flatter. Currently using your great videos in conjunction with his instruction on shallowing the shaft. A work in progress. No shortcuts. When it works it’s great, but drilling it in takes time.
I grew up with what I was told was a neutral grip, but which is apparently now an extremely weak one! I've strengthened my grip the past few years to get more draw and lower ball flight. When I showed my instructor what I considered to be a strong grip, he just chuckled and shook his head. Had me move my hands another good inch more around to the right. Felt absolutely bizarre at first, but I saw results immediately.
This was extremely helpful. I knew that the turn of the club face is affected by the grip. What I learned was that I can adjust my grip based on the turn in the club face well before addressing the ball. My challenge has been in squaring the club face and not over turning it into a hard draw.
Standard grips on Irons and faiway woods, but a strong grip on the driver. I can do straight only. Using stiff driver shaft. Have a Callaway XR16 driver, plus a SIM2 which i won,, :) not 10 yards in the 2 drivers, both make 260-290 yards. A very Odd 320 yarder too.
Good instruction. For right handers left thumb at 1 O'clock, right thumb at 11 O'clock on the shaft as you look down. All else is extreme. If I use 2 O'clock left thumb it blocks my release and I hit it right, if I do manage a release it duck hooks. Stay neutral. Don't fall for the strong grip lie. Old Scot Pro, John Boath of St Andrews taught me the clock. He plays golf in heaven now.
Just recently adjusted my grip to reveal my left hand knuckles and it is making a huge difference. Still have a ways to go to with my irons but much fewer miss hits and certainly building my confidence which feels wonderful. Thanks for confirming the importance of grip.
Hi Alex, love your simple instruction drills. I am constantly fighting to stop a left pointing divot on approaching irons to greens. Any suggestions on how to fix it? Thank you.
I switched from neutral grip to strong top hand grip and weak bottom hand grip and my driver became much straighter for me along with more consistency with all my other clubs. I don’t why this is the case but I usually shoot around 100 and first game after making the switch and some practice I shot 92.
Hey Alex! i am heading to the range later on today. Cannot wait to give this tip a try. Most of the time, i felt my left hand grip is too tight which i had hard time releasing my club freely and hopefully, with your slow swing drill and this one, i will be able to be able to make solid contacts and more consistent. 👌👍👍 Thank you and have a great weekend!
@@Silenced_by_nazi_youtube I have been pretty happy with my game this season with the tips and drills from Alex. Too bad golfing outdoor is at the end of season in USA where i live cos winter has arrived. Hope your game is going well and thanks for asking.👍👍
This was helpful. My grip is super stronger and I have tried time and time again to make it neutral. However, it has failed me the longer the club becomes. I have somewhat gotten around this by aiming further left and now I am going to experiment with large grips to aid in adding more surface to make my hands comfy.
i have always had a strong grip, and it works for me. I hit the ball pretty straight for a strong grip, but getting older now, dont have the distance i used to.
For most of us weekend players, strong grip is standard for driver, woods and even long irons. We all want to hit draw shot from inside-out path which makes less ball spin for longer carry distance. 250 yards is more helpful for the second shot using controllable mid iron, rather than 220 yards that needs long iron or hybrid in a PAR 4. Notice that not many golfers can hit draw shot. Just saying.
you can talk to a fade, a draw won't listen. "Lee Trevino 😂 i hate my natural draw with a passion. if/when I'm hitting a fade the ball stops dead on greens. the draw always rolls through the back
The grip and the body motions required are infinity more complicated than presented here. Ben Hogan is acknowledged as the greatest ball striker along with Mo Norman. That is why I use a weak grip. It is much more natural through the hitting area. Nicklaus had a fairly weak grip when playing his best.
Something else to try(for better players). Take a strong grip, and make yourself hit a fade. Then, take a weak grip, and make yourself hit a draw. I work on extremes when I practice. It helps me tremendously, in finding middle ground.
@@joshuarobin6900 You pretty much have to stop your hips, and shoulders to be square to the ball through impact. Then, roll those hands over. You’ll also need to swing around yourself, much flatter than you’re probably used to. Set up like you’re reaching for the ball more. This will help you swing more inside to out. Let me know if this helps. I think it’s fun to experiment with this stuff. lol
@@jamiesloan7259 I’ll try that!! I really like trying different shot shapes. I want to be more versatile than just hitting a strait ball. Thanks for the tips.
I set up with Nuetral Grip with Irons and turn the Face open with my Hands , Take back on face Angle and when I strike the Ball , Have an Little Power Draw!
I feel as a strong grip is used to silence everything else. Get the shoulders slightly closed stance slightly closed and don’t worry about your wrists. I know may say hey not getting the release. I promise you if you hit the ball with compression and straight you’ll hit 275+ atleast I do
Was playing great until about 3 weeks ago. I watched this video 3 times this morning and went to the range. Funny how you change things over time, forget what you were doing right. Big thanks to Alex and this video for getting my ball flying proper again today!! Yes, that quick.
Since practicing a weak grip I have noticed even when I toe the ball it still flys straight. In a neutral grip I noticed that when I would toe the ball it would slice. Really interesting. I have no idea why.
Been playing 2 months now. Never even examined my grip, but I've been holding it at the top of the handle in my lead and bottom of the handle in my trailing hand. I hope this can get me some more distance. Definitely awkward only have a 190 yard drive.
Hurt Right Hand... Alex, through an odd accident while swinging my club at a Driving Range, I hurt the 3 fingers on my right hand. I have lost some grip strength in my right hand. If I need to make my left hand more dominant in my swing, should I use a stronger grip or neutral when I swing the club?
Thank again Alex. I was really struggling to get my grip to sit correctly. This simple tip of putting the club on your shoulder and gripping it from there has helped immensely. It locks in just nicely and not tightly. Hitting balls in the backyard my whole swing now feels smooth with much better rythem and ball striking a lot more consistent. I know he mentioned this but I'll add that the driving range, as always, is ideal to work on this. I messed around with a strong grip on 14 and pulled it so bad it bounced off somebody's card on a different Tee box. Yelled "fore" so it's all good but I was suprised by the difference a grip change made.
@@AlexElliottGolf I will let you know on Monday good or bad. I could not hit a ball anywhere near the left side of a range or course until I found your videos. Now I can draw the ball & everyone I play with keep asking what I did with the real Joe. And now whenever I need to slice to the right I hit a very nice FADE. Thank you very much for everything you have taught me over the last year & a half, I am so much better than I use to be !!! C U 2 morrow
You have any input on interlocking vs I suppose I'd call it a over grip? Referring to the pinky and index finger. Is 1 better than the other? Is one easier to master or more consistent than the other?
AHH, I've developed a right slice in my driver in the past few rounds.. I'm sure I grip with both thumbs straight down the club. I figured everything straight = straight shot. Something for me to think about, that and pinning my right shoulder. 👍🏻
I am mostly aware of the fact that grip is essential to hit the ball well. Êspecially when I hit the driver. Litle bit strong grip so draw biased. Right hand from under up.
I’m having an issue getting too quick on downswing with driver. With that thought I’m hitting great shots for me. But I have these ugly misses that can go anywhere left. I’m trying to pause as I turn through.
Why would it matter?? Grips are just personal preference Just get grips that make you feel comfortable That's all that matters Better yet learn to DIY on installing grips of UA-cam and you will save upurself my a motza on regripping
Hey man…good vid. I’m having a problem of a strong grip but fading driver. Not sure if it is the grip? The driver? Shaft? I swing around 100-105 average clubhead…it’s a ping g430 10k head with a tour chrome 2.0 65 X flex shaft. Fitted at pga superstore. I mean…I don’t mind the fade as it is a fairway finder, but I have to really try hard to turn the ball over into a draw…sometimes it just goes straight when I try too. Hard to draw it. Head is set at standard 10.5 setting. Could the head weight? The shaft being too stiff or heavy cause the fade? I used to hook driver like crazy. I’m currently a 5 hcp
I never had this problem before. Now, I just can’t get a very high launch. My ball flight is much like a stinger - line driVes. What can I do to Get the ball higher?
My iron grip is weaker than my driver, one of the reasons is probably the periphery weighting at the base of my tailormade 200 irons (irons 20y old now) The other thing is that you need to have no stress / strain in your hands or swing, force / power is bad especially while learning. Anyone notice how far a layup shot goes ;-)) or I will just knock it up to the people in front "I never hit that far".
What a brillant help ! It has from time to time with my neutral grip got me into some trouble … Such as the Driver going a bit right even though I thought I did everything right and with my irons at times going to much to the left!!🤔 But now I know it has to do with my neutral grip that could get me in to trouble sometimes… I practice it at the driving rang today and after a bit of training I went out to play on the golf course 🍃🏌🏻♂️ - Worked like a charm 🙏🏻☺️💪🏻 Thank you So much straighter and so much more fun and enjoyable ..
Excellent video - even though I manage to play off 8 these basics are so important - I am surprised anyone could give it a thumbs down - love the fact they are free but some pros have a donate option which I think is only fair 😊
I have a strong grip yet my ball will head waaaaay left then slice right midway twice as much. Is that my swing angle? I'm guessing I'm far to out to in

"Lee Trevino 😂
i hate my natural draw with a passion.
if/when I'm hitting a fade the ball stops dead on greens.
the draw always rolls through the back
The grip and the body motions required are infinity more complicated than presented here.
I can get the face with a strong grip, but not the draw with a weak one. I’ll try again next time I hit the range.
Really informative ! Thanks
Does this grip adjustment apply to irons as well? Just had surgery or I would just go experiment at the range myself. Can't wait to try though...
Never thought grip is so important. Thank you
I feel as a strong grip is used to silence everything else.
Great tip Alex, does the same grip apply to irons as well.
yes !
Since practicing a weak grip I have noticed even when I toe the ball it still flys straight.
In a neutral grip I noticed that when I would toe the ball it would slice. Really interesting. I have no idea why.
This was excellent, thanks. Really good to see weak and strong first, and then onto the ideal grip. Ill save this. Cheers
thank you William really happy to hear that you think it isa great video! welcome to the channel
Been playing 2 months now. Never even examined my grip, but I've been holding it at the top of the handle in my lead and bottom of the handle in my trailing hand. I hope this can get me some more distance. Definitely awkward only have a 190 yard drive.
This is simple but vital. Just subscribed. Thank you. 👍😎🇦🇺
Keep up the good work I like how it is sweet & short
Unfortunately been in lockdown . But will hit the course on Friday and see what happens. :)
Great lesson, thank you!
Hey Alex this is great for my driver but what about my irons 4-PW? Oh I use a KBS Reg Shaft with my Mizuno JPX923's
I know he mentioned this but I'll add that the driving range, as always, is ideal to work on this. I messed around with a strong grip on 14 and pulled it so bad it bounced off somebody's card on a different Tee box. Yelled "fore" so it's all good but I was suprised by the difference a grip change made.
thank you!
After watching this lesson I want to go to the range right now.
Alex how do you contact compition winners?
Good Morning Coach !!! Well good Afternoon Coach over there !!!
Good morning joe! I hope you are well!? Any good this weekend??
It all depends on you, i wouldnt like to say there is a certain way, i like neutral grip though
Yeah, I feel I need to strengthen slightly
Hi Martin! Make sure you hit the points i mention in the video on neutral grip!
@@AlexElliottGolf OK
AHH, I've developed a right slice in my driver in the past few rounds.. I'm sure I grip with both thumbs straight down the club. I figured everything straight = straight shot. Something for me to think about, that and pinning my right shoulder. 👍🏻
My ball flight was definitely the first but I think my grip is OK, I can see my knuckles etc. I'll try this tip out cheers
Great vid. Imma try this on the range!
Can you do a vid on how to controll ball flight
Fantastic tip there boss!!!!!
I have just subscribed to the channel. Very insightful, thanks a lot
thank you
I need to spend some time on the range. I normally slice to the right and then I over compensate!!!
Hi Wayne! Make sure you give this a try
Great tip!
Hi Greg! Thank you so much!
Brilliant Mate.
Does grip size matter much? Is it worth re gripping to mid or oversize grips if I have bigger hands?
Why would it matter??
Grips are just personal preference
Just get grips that make you feel comfortable
That's all that matters
Better yet learn to DIY on installing grips of UA-cam and you will save upurself my a motza on regripping
no this doesn’t matter too much
Hey man…good vid.
Great question and i will try and cover this in another video 🙌🏼 Thanks for tuning in
I never had this problem before. Now, I just can’t get a very high launch. My ball flight is much like a stinger - line driVes. What can I do to Get the ball higher?
My attention to grip is directly proportional to what my last shot did.
So I'm probably driving myself crazy.
Hi Alex
I will be on the range tomorrow morning giving that a go before I play . another great tutorial🏌️
How have you played?
Great video.
Good run down, but geeze I was wonderin when you were ever going to mention ' neutral ' grip........@theEnd
Great, thanks
My iron grip is weaker than my driver, one of the reasons is probably the periphery weighting at the base of my tailormade 200 irons (irons 20y old now)
The other thing is that you need to have no stress / strain in your hands or swing, force / power is bad especially while learning.
Anyone notice how far a layup shot goes ;-)) or I will just knock it up to the people in front "I never hit that far".
You have to do what works for you!
S&A Artisans ging to Mottram Hall for out day out in sept cant wait
What a brillant help !
It has from time to time with my neutral grip got me into some trouble …
Such as the Driver going a bit right even though I thought I did everything right and with my irons at times going to much to the left!!🤔
But now I know it has to do with my neutral grip that could get me in to trouble sometimes…
I practice it at the driving rang today and after a bit of training I went out to play on the golf course 🍃🏌🏻♂️
- Worked like a charm 🙏🏻☺️💪🏻
Thank you
So much straighter and so much more fun and enjoyable ..
I seem to be chasing my grip, not settling to a standard grip for my game, constantly chasing the fault...
cracking tip alex, need this for my
grip. Refreshing content compared to the bores
Excellent video - even though I manage to play off 8 these basics are so important - I am surprised anyone could give it a thumbs down - love the fact they are free but some pros have a donate option which I think is only fair 😊
Nice tip
I have a very strong grip and I like a draw. But when I need to fade it round a dogleg I use a weak grip and open stance.
I have a strong grip yet my ball will head waaaaay left then slice right midway twice as much. Is that my swing angle? I'm guessing I'm far to out to in
Please do a review of "perfect hands golf"
I have a strong left hand and a weak right hand how does this affect my swing?
Thank you
What shot tracer do you use
Does it matter wear your lower hand goes?
