More hunters ought to learn a little physics. As a late in life hunter who's always been a tutor and teacher, I love seeing the physics understanding behind all of the gear tinkering and strategy.
Troy I have learned so much from you. I did what you said building high f.o.c. arrows, the poor man's way. Due to a shoulder injury I switched from a 60-70 lb bow to a 50-60 lb bow. I took the arrows (cx300) for 60-70 bow and 8 .22 caliber lead pellets, for a pellet gun, swaged the skirts open and glued eight of them together head to tail. Each skirt on the pellet was slightly larger than the i.d. of the shaft. I took a wooden dowel and pushed them down to the back end of the insert. With 125 grain Broadhead or Field Point. I got slightly over 23% FOC. Arrows truly fly like darts off of my Hoyt Prohawk @53-55 lb with a 29"drawlength. I did the same thing with some inexpensive no name carbon arrows for my Mongolian horse bow @ 50lbs. 225-250gr seems to be the sweet spot like you said, I don't know why but it is. I am a disabled veteran with a very small fixed income I can't even afford to hunt now, but I'm grateful for you and your Channel. I have spoken to my friends about Dr. Ashby and the ranch fairy Channel. Thank you so much for the inspiration, if at some point I can afford to hunt one day, I will be sure to let you know how it turned out. Keep putting out those awesomely informative videos. God bless and take care.
Troy the Ranch Fairy is awesome! He guided me through the process of changing to a higher FOC arrow and would respond to my questions or results very quickly! Sometimes faster than going through your local fast food drive thru! Remember there is the ranch fairy test kit available with the different weighted tips to see what weight your bow likes. I went to a 300 spine arrow and 250 grains up front so I went with the 100 grain brass insert and 150 Magnus Ser Buzzcut.... mini spear!
Great video. My tuning steps: 1) get the arrow pointing straight in the rest, 2) shoot up close, 3) shoot far away, 4) adjust rest as required. I like Mr. Ranch Fairy's simple methods - the proof is in the results. Ted for President.
Seriously, a great simple informative video. Years ago there was little to no heavy inserts. I used to epoxy brass rod pieces to the end of the point insert. I did make the pieces exact in weight with the insert on the weight scale to get exact measurements. 50-75-100 grain plus the insert to within 1/2 grain. Back then bareshaft tuning was really not well practiced but grouping was the goal. I did try nock tuning some as I shot a whisker biscuit so it didn't matter. There weren't any fancy drop away rests. Mechanical broadheads weren't invented. Two and three blade fixed was about all there was. Fletchings were either very small for basically indoor or 3 to 4" for hunting and in retrospect they were pure junk. The goal then was to keep hits in a 3" circle at 30 yards was excellent results. We all just figured nearly everything we shot was around 30 yards. And in reality a 5" or 6" area is usually in the " kill zone ".
I've been shooting 2 years strictly target making the move to live target & wanted to learn about arrow selection I learned more about bow set up in 2 videos from you than I learned the 2 years of research & shooting .

Awesome! Similar results with my Bear Status and my Bear Legion single cam before that. 65 pounds, 28.5 draw, 300 spine with 225 to 250 up front flies great!
I was trying to order a couple 250/300 spine arrow and found I could only purchase by the dozen! That's a couple hundred bucks for something I would only use a couple of out of a dozen. i remembered hearing Ranch Fairy saying something about "Ranch Fairy test kit" so I Googled it and found it. Two of 250 spine arrows two 300 spine arrows nocks and inserts plus field points in different weights for testing. Awesome! Thanks RF!
Helical through a whisker biscuit? Great seeing ole Troy showing how high foc works! Kudos guys to the last few videos including this one! Nothin better than seeing the 2 best UA-cam channels working together! It’s great to see guys preaching broadhead sharpening and arrow tuning!

I wouldn't argue with accuracy success, however he definitely chokes his grip. I got to think it's 70 or 80 yards he's going to have enough bow torque to have Broadhead planing out....
It appears that Ted's bow hand could be a little bit more relaxed. It doesn't look like a death grip, but he could be introducing torque with a closed grip.

I started the process a couple weeks ago and went from a 380gr arrow with 8% FOC to 510gr arrow with 17.5% FOC! Cannot wait to take it in the woods this fall!
@@johndenver5029 I have kept around the same number just changed arrow and broadheads for tinkering purposes! Still running around 15% FOC! How’s your setup?
Back in the early days this is why we paper tuned our bows, the tear in the paper would show you if you had perfect arrow flight or not off the arrow rest. Ranch's way makes a lot of sense as well because it shows you how well or not well your arrow is flying further down range. That extra pt. wt. made all the difference in the world.
@@sed6 In my opinion that is not true. Why would you bare shaft then go back to paper? Paper will help you adjust spine and bow to get bare shaft or fletched arrow bullet hole. Then you can go to distance and shoot bare shaft and fletched shaft to make micro rest and/or spine adjustments to get them hitting together and straight. The paper is just to make sure your arrow is not getting launched out of your bow sideways before shooting it at distance. You can then go on to group tuning or broadhead tuning depending on the arrows purpose
bows have fascinated me much more than guns in terms of physics. definitely looking forward to getting my first bow to use all around for hunting all over the country! (might not happen but it would be cool!)
Great information!! I like the step by step process makes it easier to understand for us simple folks. Maybe Ted should try and relax his hand his bow when he shoots?
Your pretty much always going to apply a little bit of torque, and bareshaft tuning will exaggerate that. Plus they were shooting in the wind which causes even more pressure in the grip
This video was awesome! Last year i purchased the same bow ted has... (Bear Species). Took down 2 deer last year with it but with this info i believe i will be taking down more this year. Thanks guys! 🏹
In that slow motion video of that first bare shaft shot, you could see the arrow was flying towards the target sideways when it hit the other arrow. At the end of the video, you could see the heavier bare shaft arrow was flying pretty sideways too when it hit the pig and wobbled back and forth a lot.
Shooting GT Hunter Pro 300 with 100g insert and 150g tip 28.5 inches. Rock-solid. Missed the target in the basement at 12 yards and hit the concrete wall (don't ask why). Arrow shaft was still good. The insert slipped forward from the shock. Tapped it back in and ready to go.
I use a 100 grain insert and actually use an excalibur boltcutter broadhead (they are meant for crossbows, a little shorter blades but a full 150 grains). Helical vanes, broadheads shoot just like the field points
Worth mentioning that FOC also helps accuracy. If you took a broomstick and put a weight on the end of it and threw it, it’ll fly straighter than if the weight wasnt there.

Hey to the hunting public you’ve influenced me so much and I know you probibly get a lot of comments of people asking you questions but I am 17 years old and watching your videos has influenced my hunting style greatly I just graduated high school and with all this covid stuff it has made my plans for life go crazy I’ve got to wait at least a year and a half to even start college for a electrician degree or I could just start working but I just watched the “how we make money” podcast and it has influenced me to start a UA-cam channel not because I want the money but because I love hunting and fishing and really want to be able to share the memories with my kids all the fun I had when I was 17 years old like my dad did with me but he had to do it with pictures and stories and I want to be able to show my real expressions threw video what is your best advice as far as cameras to buy and UA-cam in general
I had a set up off so far that when I shot a bare shaft the arrow snapped haha. This is one of my must do to tune my bow now. That and walk back turning. If I get those two things just about perfect and I get my ezv lined up right.. I cant shoot the same target twice or I'll blow my arrows up out to 50 yards.
Great trip/video THP. Another of the little known guys. Ranch Fairy seemed a little off tune when I first saw him. Now that he's slowed it down a bit. the guy makes perfect sense. Pays to do your homework. Going to switch it up. You guys are bringing it. Thx
Last video was such a hit that Innovative Outdoorsman sold out of sharpening jigs in like two days! Unfortunately, that was before I could order one myself haha
How’s it Troy, I’m starting an all new set up from scratch. I got a Matthews Phase 4 33”. DW at 75lbs DL at 31.5” Looking to bring the thunder! Where do recommend to start as far as shaft size? And field point weight to bare shaft tune my setup? Thank you for your time Abraham Apilado EhuKai Fishing 🤙🏽
I also torque tune on top of all the bareshafting and playing with point weight. And I think that is a neccecary step to help increase the level of perfect flight even a little bit further personally. What do you think Troy?
Question for you about full length weight tube inserts. They come in 1, 3, 5 grains per inch increments. I was considering adding those then getting weighted insert for my set up. Your opinion on weight tubes
Not what you want. Any extra weight should always be metal put up front. Think of it this way, metal is dense and hard, arrows are light and flexible. Would a 3 lb hammer made of wood hit harder than a 3lb hammer made of steel? No. Same mass, same swing speed, same kinetic energy, same momentum, but the energy transfer to its target is way higher in the steel because it is denser and harder (high modulus of elasticity). If more of your weight is in the arrow shaft, the arrow shaft is then going to have to transfer the energy through the less dense and less hard carbon to the tip and there will be a loss in energy at the tip. But if you move more of your weight to the metal insert and broadhead, the energy transfer of those components to the tip is immediate. I shoot a 30 inch arrow with a 65lb bow. I shoot Element Storm 250 spine arrows (at 9.3gpi) with 135 grain Ethics stainless steel inserts, 125 grain points, Zinger Fletches, and Nock Out lighted nocks for a total of 550 grains and 19% FOC. These Element Storms are the lightest gpi arrows for the spine, are really strong, but most of all, the highest modulus carbon arrows, which means the carbon they use is more efficient at transferring energy to the tip and therefore hit harder. I have 260 grains of metal at the tip and 290 grains in the shaft and components. I want that shaft to do more work to transfer that 290 grains, and to do that you need a stiffer arrow with the highest modulus carbon you can reasonably get. Have fun with your arrow build and good luck this season!
Weight tubes will lower your FOC as the weight is distributed throughout the shaft. Your better off beefing up your tip with either a heavier insert, broadhead, or both.
Well I have 27 inch arrow shoot 60lbs. 400 spine and was going to use tube along with 100 grain threaded insert 100 grain broadhead. Add like 3 grain per inch tubes also. My biggest problem is I already have like 3 dozen be man is white outs I'd like to use up is why but looking for more pent ration not just trashing them.
Scott Hustedde not sure shaft tube weights will solve your problem with being under spined. Being under spined will cause you flight and impact problems. Plus, adding that kind of weight on a weak arrow is asking for a break at the shot.
I'm totally digging this ! Thank you for all of your work and sharing it with us. Is 2 blade single bevel broadhead final position (consistancy on all arrows) critical in the tuning process? If so how do I reposition any insert inconsistencies?
I have watch a lot of hunting things over my 30 years of hunting and NOT 1 person has made as much Sense as the OL Ranch fairy..... crazy or not the dude makes tooooo much sense. If you just sit and think about his approach it make perfect sense..... you wanna shoot a deer with a 55gn 5.56 or would a 300gn 45-70 do better ? 😂 yeah no baby weights for me 👍
Thats sort of a strawman though. The emphasis on speed is normally to offset the animals reaction to the sound of the bow. Whether 556 or 45-70, the animal has no chance of reacting, its simply not a concern. As far as killing potential, KE is an almost universal standard. Speed is squared in this equation, mass is not.. I said all this to agree that LESS emphasis should be placed on speed, and more on literally every other factor involving arrow/bh performance. The "problem" is more nuanced than just "use a 700 gr arrow". There's a middle ground, and a lot of it is personal preference.
@@zeroedinwithzeke4059 I have thought that, and agree with the logic. Heavier arrows should result in less wear to vulnerable components as well. I would like to see a deer react to a "heavy" compound set-up compared to a "heavy" recurve set-up. I dont own one but every one I've seen was eerily quiet with seemingly ordinary set-ups.
I used a similar arrow for my 28/60 bow. Worked like a champ. I did use Quickfletch, which unfortunately at 50 gr total weight, kept my FOC at 13%. Blazers or feathers would have kept the FOC higher.
Great stuff guys! Troy, can I do the same tuning with a 20" crossbow bolt? Rehabbing a shoulder this year so the bow is in the rack. Just curious... Thanks for sharing, can't wait to see Ted's hunt!
After bare shaft tuning with the ranch fairy test kit, wouldn't adding fletches throw off the FOC balance? And therefore cause vertical tears? Should more weight be added up front to account for the fletch weight in the back?
Is the 300 and 225 usually pretty good starting spot for 29 inch and 70 lbs? And what happens if the bare shaft doesnt shoot that good? Is it just weight based? Where can I get heavier tips?
If your arrow isn’t hitting straight with a bare shaft how do you fix that? Do you have to get heavier arrows or add weight to the front of the arrow for foc?
5:09 “bare shafting is just something you never really explored.” my 2 kids say otherwise

Canon g30 is a good starter camera. We also use a Sonya6500 for vlogging and a Sony x80 for filming game
Awesome stuff guys!!! That arrow is gonna bust thru alot of animals!!!
I like how he spray painted where the pig vitals actually are. They are much more forward than that of a deer.
I tuned my breathing with his.
Great trip/video THP. Another of the little known guys. Ranch Fairy seemed a little off tune when I first saw him. Now that he's slowed it down a bit. the guy makes perfect sense. Pays to do your homework. Going to switch it up. You guys are bringing it. Thx
Troy. I also think your a great ambassador for archery. If you ever want to come hunt in Canada. I will email you my information.
Love this stuff. I've had so many broken arrows with low penetration. Mostly dead deer but this stuff makes alotta sense
Awesome video!
Love having a golf bag...490,714, and the big boy....
Last video was such a hit that Innovative Outdoorsman sold out of sharpening jigs in like two days! Unfortunately, that was before I could order one myself haha
Haha. That sucks
Nice i bought mine and will get them tomorrow
That's the great thing about America. They will always make more!
What about the sweet spot for a 30 inch draw at 65 lbs? Should I start with 300 spine and 225 gr insert/tip?
I feel i learned alot tonight! Good stuff!
Good video. Would've liked to see a slow motion of the final arrow setup to see if there was less arrow wobble.
At what point would you knock tune the arrows? Or would you with them shooting that consistent?
Did Ted do a knock tune and insert tune before doing the shooting tests??
The music that you guys play is awesome. But... Was wondering if you guys had some music from Teds band lol
Yea I wanna hear em too
How’s it Troy, I’m starting an all new set up from scratch.
I got a Matthews Phase 4 33”.
DW at 75lbs
DL at 31.5”
Looking to bring the thunder!
Where do recommend to start as far as shaft size? And field point weight to bare shaft tune my setup?
Thank you for your time

EhuKai Fishing 🤙🏽
How far were the shots taken from, thought i heard 10 yards. Awesome video
I shot helical vanes thru a whisker biscuit and it ripped all the vanes off. Never did find that arrow. What type of glue are you using?
Or would it be just better to add weighted insert leave tubes out. What would be the heaviest insert I could buy
Man do I love Magnus broadheads haha
Dont know if mentioned, need a Hunting Public and Ranch Fairy combo t-shirt made. Enjoying the results and series on the RF test ranch.
I think the last two slow motion shots of teds arrows new and old looked exactly the same!!
Sounds like that Texas humidity’s getting to Jake a little bit. At least you know the microphone works. 👍🏼😂
Alpha Papa Heavy arrow=less noise= delayed reaction time so it’s all the same.
The fairy has me just a touch shy of 700 grains. Adult arrow no flappers. Super quiet and very deadly!!!
This is an amazing video holy shit.. thanks for demystify 20 years of confusion for me.
Great freaking lesson
I used a similar arrow for my 28/60 bow. Worked like a champ. I did use Quickfletch, which unfortunately at 50 gr total weight, kept my FOC at 13%. Blazers or feathers would have kept the FOC higher.
Were any adjustments made to the rest position between shots? Or was the correction just the effect of changing arrows? Thanks
3:38 is exactly what happened to me last fall
Need to by some arrows, where can I get some already built? 550 g with the ethics system?
