  • "Krass" is a great German word. It can be used in so many different situations. I hear it all the time in Berlin and it almost always brings a smile to my face. One particular day I heard it all over Berlin, everyone was saying it, younger and older people, in bars, on the bus, on the offices and on the street. So I thought: "I have to do a video about how you say this word in English!"
Obviously, this is informal and even colloquial. But there are many business situations where you can used the English translations of the "krass".Hope you enjoy this English video tip.

Hey everyone. This is Neil. In Berlin everything is "krass" and I was thinking "there are so many ways you can say that in English". Do you know what they are? Watch the video and find out. Enjoy.
Okay, so we can divide this into four parts. And I'm gonna start by telling you the first part. If someone is telling you a story and you wanna react and say something is good, you can say for example: "Yeah, um hum, oh cool, awesome". And that is neutral or informal. Or a British version would be, for example, "Aw, wicked", in Ireland we would say "Aw, deadly". Or if you're younger, a lot younger than me, you would say "sick". So, I'll write those for you here.
Okay, so let's have a look at the second part. So, it's the same situation, someone is telling you a story and you're listening. So if I'm listening to a story...I'm listening, someone is talking to me and I want to say that I'm surprised, I can say: "Wow", like in a good way. Or if it's something bad, I'm surprised because what you're telling me is bad, I can say the same word but in a different way; like "Wow". Or I can also say "Woah" like "Stop, it's too much". Or I can simply say "That is mental" or "That is crazy" or "That is mad". So in all of those ways I am expressing surprise, that I'm surprised. So, I'll write them up for you here...So just remember the difference between these ones, the same word but you say it in a different way, in a good way it's like "Wow" and in a bad way would be "Wow!".
So what about if you are telling the story? And you wanna say "Es war voll krass" or "es war ziemlich krass". It's very similar to this one. You just need to add a subject and a verb. So, you can say "It was so cool". Or "it was so awesome." Or "that was just deadly". Or "that was just wicked". Or "that was really sick". So I'll write them for you here. And just remember it's similar also here, is that "awesome", is like, I think, it was American but now everyone uses it, everyone uses "awesome" and "cool"; "deadly" would be in Ireland, "wicked" would be in Britain. And "sick", again if you're much younger than me, you can say that.
So, in this last situation, you are telling someone a story and you wanna say "it was bad", "something was bad", you wanna say "Aww, es war echt krass". Then you can say "Oh my god, it was terrible." Or "that was just awful". So, I'll write those here for you.
So that's how you say those things. If you think this video is "krass", then hit the like button and share it. If you think this video is "crap", hit the like button as well, please. And I'll see you soon.
Hey guys. Thanks a lot for watching the videos. If you're wondering what you can watch next, well, you can watch more vocabulary, you could watch more grammar videos or you could watch more videos explaining typical German phrases. Simple...enjoy.

Das ist eine super Idee solche Worte zu analysieren! "Krass" haha hätte ich nicht gewusst was ich da auf Englisch verwenden soll. Ich denke für die meisten Fälle würde ich nun "sick" nehmen... :D Danke super Erklärung!

Gerne, ich stoße immer wieder auf Phänomene zwischen Englisch und Deutsch. Im Moment fällt mir aber kein Beispiel ein. Ich melde mich wenn mir etwas über den Weg läuft. :)
