  • Are you writing the right kinds of emails? Do you know how to start and end an email?
What phrases are formal, neutral and informal? In international business, it's vital to get this right. Most business English emails are neutral. They may start off being a little formal but after a few emails, the correspondence becomes less formal. If you meet the person you are writing to and/ or get to know them, you may be able to exchange more informal emails.
This Business English video tip tells you which phrases you can use to start and end your emails.
If you have any questions, just send me an email :-)
    Formal:
    Dear Sir/Madam,
    Yours faithfully,
    Neutral:
Dear Ms. Smith / Mr. Black
    Yours Sincerely,
    Dear Mary,
All the best, / Best regards, / Kind regards,
    Hello Peter,
    Best, / Regards,
    Informal:
    Hi, / Hey,
CU, / Love, / See you,

Very useful video! This is exactly what I have been looking for! Subtle tones and manners.. it is so difficult for me to use them acurrately. I have been recently in charge of communicating with foreigners in my team. However, I have never been to English countries. Everyday is a mission for me these days, writing an email or a marketing report. There are lots of professional terms in IT vertical. TT. Thanks a lot again for making this video!

Hi JM Lee. Sorry about the delay in responding to your comment. I've been taking a long break from youtube. Thanks a lot for your feedback. This is so helpful. I will make more of this type of content in the future. I hope the communication with international team members is going well for you.

    Dear Sir,
Kindly tell us how to write our name at the end after those closing words (Yours sincerely/faithfully, Love, etc.) in all the cases (Formal, Neutral and Informal). E.g. if my name is Preter Black (where 'Peter' is first name and 'Black' is last name), how can I write it in all the three cases?
    Thank You.

Not to be too critical but if you speak English well enough to understand you speaking wouldn't they already have a fair idea about this? Just an idea that if you spoke some german when explaining it it might help people who aren't fluent but just need ideas for letters/emails etc. great videos though. Very helpful even for an English speaker.

@ballyoulsterboy: thanks a lot for your feedback and for being critical. Speaking some German in the videos is an excellent idea. I have done it in other videos, but I forgot to keep doing it. Thanks for the reminder. The other point about people who understand what I'm saying already having a fair idea of this- that is exactly what I thought. But I noticed that it kept coming up as an issue with upper intermediate and even advanced groups. They had an idea but they weren't sure. It constantly surprised me and was one of the reasons why I did a video on this and aimed it principally at higher level students.

Hi Victor. Most people I teach here have a mid intermediate level. So I try and aim videos around that level, sometimes a bit higher, sometimes a bit lower. Are you a teacher? Do you teach English and/ or Spanish?
