i have a few rules that helped me: 1. most people are happy when they simply get a response, they do not care tbout your grammar!! 2. if you miss a word- use an other one or say it in a different way... 3. use gap-fillers! like: you see?, you know? dont tell me...., tell me...., well......, exactly, certainly, absolutely, 4. use short sentences and phrases! we austrians often speak in long sentences, and full sentences, natives dont do that, they use short phrases or sentences. we say (in german): Yes sure, that sounds good! how do you do? native english: Sure, sounds good! how's it goin'? 5. think english! do not translate in your mind- stop learning words in your first language and then translate, it is useless, just learn the word and the meaning, all in english!!!
Absolutely; any sort of translation kills one's language learning! It's acceptable to know five hundred words with translation, for example; but these words have to be super basic. In my book, they really help to learn next without any translation!
The concept of starting with a more practical goal as "speaking English fluently with confidence" instead of "speaking perfect English like a native speaker" is GOLD. Thank you Hadar!
1) I think the most challenging thing for me is to speak correctly. Yeah, I'm not afraid of mistakes but sometimes I get stuck and my speech crashes :) 2) My plan: - I'm gonna learn and practice the rules that I'm struggling with (As a rule It's common tenses) - I don't want to expand my vocabulary I just want to use the words and phrases I've already known but don't use
You got me in tears when you said “You don’t need to sound like a native. You need to sound like yourself.” I still remember when I started learning English at a late age (16). I’d ask my English native-speaking friends about the sound of my accent. One of them answered me, “You sound like Larry.” At this time, I never understood what they actually meant; I thought they were acting nice and did not want me to feel down. Over the course of the years, however, I learned to embrace my accent since there isn’t much I could do to sound like James Franco. I trained my brain into believing that my accent represents my culture. This approach has given me so much confidence and now I speak with so much freedom. Thanks for making these helpful videos. Happy New Year! :)
@@fseenamber7901 Since I'm currently living in the US, I'm constantly surrounded by people who only speak English. Back in the days, when I first started learning the language, I had to make huge sacrifices as a teenager. Instead of going to the movies to hang out with my friends, I would go to the library to read English-written books and sit with a dictionary to define unknown words. READING really helped me -and still does- to acquire a broader vocabulary. Nowadays, some friends wouldn't even believe that English is actually my third language. I guess, me choosing sophisticated words while speaking with confidence is what gives them that impression of me. Good luck!
I have been studying English for two years now and believe me people, if you follow these tips that she was talking about you will become not only better in speaking English but also you will become comfortable when you talk with others. I hoped that I found this video earlier it helped me a lot ,thank you so much ❤️
I'm a native English speaker passing through but I'm also a language learner and your tips are applicable for any language. You deserve a much bigger audience. I will share your videos with my conversation partners learning English. We are all on the same journey, just on opposite ends of the road. Happy New Year Hadar!
The only thing I am sure for now is that you are teaching from your heart. That is valuable for me and other learners. You are the best teacher and THANK YOU SO MUCH.
*Thanks a Million* 1) Knowledge of English Language 2) Practise of English Language 3) Confidence to Speak English Madam You have hit the nail in the head
Yeah, we will make a lot of mistakes untill we reach the goal. But Hadar is right when said that we need to try to speak with someone. We need to try to speak even if we don't feel confident with that. Today wrote all what Hadar said, every word and after that I read aloud few times and after that I watched video 5-6 times. First with subtitle and without subtitle. It seems that's better after that. But I need to do that every day with different videos. If we do that every day it will be better and better I'm sure of that.
Your advices are heart touching yet informative. I love how you say" It's not about being pefect but it's all about communicating and expressing yourself to the world". I believe communication is the big key to make this world a better place.
1. To me public speaking in english actually hold me back, because it’s my second language and I don’t speak fluently as others. And I believe that results to the lack of confidence. 2. Cover myself surrounded with english environment, take the opportunity to speak and communicate to improve, learn the necessary topic in english that required in my work life. 3. Target to aims the best way to get fluent, and don’t because of my bad english affect my career path due to a bad communication skill. And finally, learn to make mistake is fine!
Wow! Your steps are very similar to those of my method: 1. Discovery the language 2. Imitate the language 3. Assimilate the language You learn things in context and discover how to say things (vocabulary, phrases, pronunciation, etc.) You imitate all of these things. You make these things automatic and this makes the language so much easier. This gives you confidence.
@@alonsinhorichard9756 They don't necessarily copy each other. They just discover the same universal truths. I grew up teaching myself languages. I speak six languages. I've worked as a professional interpreter for 30 years. The internet didn't exist when I was teaching myself languages and I just learned what works. I would watch telenovelas, imitate what they said, memorize phrases, learn constructions from books, record myself, dialogue with myself and then constantly used everything I learned with native speakers. I stopped using my native language and would spend months speaking and thinking in other languages. It's about adopting the language. Living it.
Today I tried a speaking evaluation with a teacher. This was actually for TOEFL. I'm required to get 26+ score and I was expecting more technical feedback. She said that I needed to practice intonation, and I have not idea where to start. After that, she gave me examples and she sounded really immature talking like the cast from "Mean girls". I was shocked. She suggested to incorporate words like "kinda" so I can sound more fluent. I don't want to sound superficial. I do agree that intonation and accent reduction would add value to my speaking and my score but I don't see the point to exaggerate that much. I'm a professional and I want to sound professional. Your English is so perfect and what I like the most is that it sounds normal and natural, not fake.
Please, please, please don't go down the route of "kinda" and "gonna" and "gotten". It's bad English and will make you sound common. I know - I'm English.
How to be fluent in English You need to have these three things 1. knowledge knowledge of words knowledge of grammar knowledge of pronounciation knowing how to use certain expression knowing how to structure it in a sentence 2. practice making sentences quickly 3. Confidence knowledge +practice How to improve knowledge -master the basic tensees -focus on words that you uses on writing but never on speaking -focus on what you need How to practice -talk to yourself How to be confident -it's okay to make mistake
I understand that because English is a 2nd language to me as well. However, like others mentioned already, native speakers don't really care that much even if you make a lot of mistakes. When I had that problem in the start, if I really encountered some nasty people who laughed at my speaking skill, I simply said to them "English is not my mother tongue, I actually have more rights than you do when it comes to making mistakes. Let's hear you speak my language!" Now I am a fluent English speaker, though I still makes tiny mistakes often as many native speakers would do in reality(mostly its a long term habit thing, at least I know what my mistakes are when I make them). I can even argue with the natives with quick responses. LMAO! Hope that helps.
You're just crazy😂 I'm sorry, I'm at a loss for words. You just hit the nail on the head. Plz keep uploading videos constantly. I've been watching a lot of native English speaking teachers, and none of them has helped as much as you have. I can't really thank you enough
Well, most native speakers don´t have experience learning a foreign language, I think that is why sometimes they are not convincing enough. Hadar is something out of this planet.... It is amazing that she can structure her language learning experience so well and pass it on to others.
היי הדר, אני ישראלי ובן 15, ככה שאני משער שיהיה לי קל יותר להתרגל למבטא שונה בגיל צעיר, אני ממש אשמח אם תוכלי לעשות וידיאו על איך שנית ממבטא ישראלי למבטא אמריקאי ספציפית ולא בכלליות, תודה רבה!

I just watched your video and I have to say that your English is amazing, I was able to understand a 99 percent of what you said; besides, the way you sounded and the energy you put into your words is completely encouraging!! Thank you, I just subscribed.
So true! I just remembered when I was living in Argentina and I had one and only goal: speaking Spanish like a native speaker. And it was very frustrating everytime being asked where I was from. The more I thought about it, the worst my pronunciation got. When I finally realized I would never speak like a native speaker, it got much easier to communicate and interact with people. This also helped me to show to people the topics of language I was struggling with and they would help me with that. Now, trying to become a good English speaker, I find myself repeating that story: my worst problem is still the confidence, because of the fear of making mistakes and sounding stupid.
Im from Argentina and i have to say, you had a very difficult task trying to speak as a native speaker. Just because our accent is very, i dont know, peculiar? 😅 Anyway, i was living in new zealand and the same happened to me, the more i wanted to speak as a kiwi, the more weird my accent became. So i think we must embrace out pronunciation (and also grammar mistakes) and just let it flow. As long as we are capable to communicate, i think is good enough.
That is not a good way in learning a foreign language, indeed. But, my advice is not to give up in making better your accent. I am not a polish, but nobody can tell I'm foreigner. I didn't like to stand out in society and I like to improve deeply my skills, that's why I can speak Polish like a native speaker
@@jintonic2359 Unless you spend decades using the language you will always stand out. Even after your accent becomes really really good you will never loose the physiology of your skull that you got from your homeland which plays a part in your voice and accent.
1. Where do I struggle the most? -Confidence. For years, most of the people who know or knew me tends to think that I’m very good with everything I put myself into, and one of them is speaking English. Truth is, I’m insecure with how I pronounce, construct, and speak the language . It always felt like everyone’s judging me and thinking that I’m not really good with it or that I can never do it. I was surrounded with people who’s born speaking this language and everytime I want to talk and share my ideas and stories, my tongue gets tied up then I mispronounced the words and lose my confidence. 2. My game plan -I’ll go back to the basics. I thought learning and expanding my vocabulary will help me become good with constructing sentences but I became more confused and I dont know where to put some words. 3. I will go back to the very beginning. I will start from there until I mastered it. There’s no room for procrastination now.❤
Nice to meet you Hadar you're excellent. I'm an English and Spanish Teacher from Venezuela and your advice had helped me a lot. We can speak English without pretending to sound like native people and another truth is that in XXI century we don't have to spend years in an English speaking country to improve our skills, we have the technology to reach our goals.

1. Where do I struggle the most? Effectively distinguishing the key differences between each of the tenses 2. My game plan: To learn/master each of the tenses and to relate, speak and write each whenever I have to. 3. I am willing to spend an hour each day to read, learn and practice English effectively.

I have a great friend that tends to studder and sometimes that spirit will attack me and my words get choppy or they come out my mouth wrong or unpolished. I have to help my friend as wrll because i eant her to be confident when she is conversing with people. I have great writing skills, learned great vocabulary, pendmenship, however, i want to focus on articulating my phrases while i am in conversations . #2 I am willing to practice in my everyday life when i am speaking about random things , making it habitual so i can get better at it fluently & effectively. If i plan to speak, i want to be confident at what im presenting to the world and say what i mean & mean what i say.
Please remember that making mistakes is okay, that's how you learn!. This can be applied to many other subjects too :D, like drawing, first you start drawing deformed people but then you start getting better by practice.

Thank you for a useful video! It appears to me that my biggest problem lies in lack of practice in writing and speaking. I have some understanding of my problematic areas and what to do, but when it comes to actually doing something about it, I'm not as consistent as I wanna be. So, to get better at those areas, I : - keep my diary every day. It usually takes 10-20 min to do so. By the way, I've been doing this for around 120 days, and I already see some improvements. - do some pronunciation exercises. I try to do it every single day for 15 min, but, unfortunately, I haven't made the habit of doing it daily like I did with keeping a diary. - write a few comments on Reddit or UA-cam - have 1-2 speaking sections with native speakers per week
I am impressed and attracted by the sincerity and enthusiasm attributes my teacher, which provides me more confidence and conviction in my endeavour to become smart in English language. Thank you so much.
Hi Haddar this is the first time that I write on public, I would like to thank you for be how you are, YOU are my motivation for become fluent on English.
I feel I’m struggling the most in the practicing part and of course it’s linked with my personal confident. Your videos are very nice now I feel note motivated than before that the only thing that I need to do is believe in my self and keep it simple. Knowledge + practicing = Badass speaker!! 😎🙌💚
Hello Haddar, Thank you very much for your interesting video. I always try as much as I can to link between what I want to learn and practice “if possible”. This helps to achieve my general goals. Though, I still believe what you mentioned in your video. Having the knowledge without practicing it is not enough. From my personal experiences, I have to create some kind of link between knowledge and practice. If there is a gap, sooner or later the gained knowledge will be forgotten. The first step is to know in particular what I want to know. i.e grammar, vocabulary, writing, Or comprehension and in particular to what extent. What kind of verbs to start from, what kind of vocabularies to start from, what kind of writing do I need to practice. The next step is to gather the information from reliable sources. Teachers play an important factor in this case. If I am watching a video where the teacher is organising his ideas, it will be much easier for me to understand the information. This is not enough. I have to practice intensively what I learn and this is where I have a weakness. Since my childhood, I was not taught that practice needs time. “Please we need a video from your side.” Most of the people think that they can learn quickly. They do not know that learning needs time and the proper way of learning is different from one person to another. “Please we need another video.” When they deal with the material for a short period of time, they give up and stop. They must understand that learning and practice takes time and they need to figure out what is the right way for them to learn. The last step is confidence and this is my biggest weakness. Whenever I want to speak, I feel that I do not have the courage to speak in English which is my second language worried to make mistakes. Thanks God I listened to your video now and I am going to do something about this matter sooner or later.
This is something I really needed to know. I’ve been learning English as my second language for so many years but I still felt stuck and now I understand why. Thank you so much Hadar.
thank you for this! I struggle with what words to use and how to connect them, with grammar and it's also a struggle thinking fast in English. My game plan: learn english from the start, use familiar words i see, practice writing in english, talk in front of the mirror and practice everyday. "You don't need to sound like a native speaker. Sound like yourself but your most fluent, expressive and confident self. Thats your goal." Needed this reminder. Thank you so much!
Love this video. The message is so clear. Thank you for doing this. I feel the love for sharing for teaching. I hope someday I become like you🥰. To me I still need all of the above, knowledge, practice specially confidence 🤗
Hi, Haddar! I am an English teacher from the Philippines.😊 I just want to commend you for this informative lesson. This was the most empowering video about fluency I've ever seen. I've seen plenty and most of them were mediocre, giving some steps to follow but not really explaining why. This was simple to understand, and was filled with practical information about the learning process that's necessary in order to become fluent. Thanks!
Hi, is a very good video with some interesting advices for english learners. I have to comment that when you mentioned the pillars I personally think that one of the most important is the listening , you don´t care so much about that but for me is the best way for learning and then obviously as you mention the conversation and confidence.

I've heard a story many years ago and at the time I thought it was really silly yet, it goes like this : Martha started studying English because she thought that knowing English was cool and she wanted to look cool when among friends. Sarah had never thought of learning English. Martha liked to watch American movies and listen to American songs on the radio. Sarah met a guy, an American visiting some friends in Sarah's country - they met and BANG, love at first sight. Problem was : Sarah couldn't speak any English and Joe had a very limited knowledge of the Vietnamese language. Joe went back to the US and started sending letters to Sarah (that story took place before sending and receiving emails became a thing). Martha and Sarah started an English course. Who ended up actually learning English? Hard to say yet chances are good, based on what we know, that Sarah might be the one who would eventually become fluent in English.
@@FatManJackson Better incentives...... better incentives. Who's to gain more in case one ends up actually mastering the language? Yet..... hard to say. Sarah might be intellectually challenging or have trouble concentration .... that might get in the way of her learning the language. Martha might be a genius who masters easily anything she puts her mind into. Also Martha might be a highly competitive person who hates being number two..... here .... another great incentive.... being number one ... if that's Martha's thing. Life is complex.
So, I think my big problem to be fluent is stopping learning lots of things every day but not memorizing them. I need to practice conversation. And I am able to study 3 or 4 hours a day.
Actually I'm ok with knowledge , I guess I know a great deal about it , however the stuff I should be focusing on is practice and confidence . My confidence is great a little bit , but practice noooo . And every day I spend 1 hour on listening , reading 10 page at least , some day writing somting as well .

i have a few rules that helped me:
1. most people are happy when they simply get a response, they do not care tbout your grammar!!
2. if you miss a word- use an other one or say it in a different way...
3. use gap-fillers! like:
you see?, you know?
dont tell me...., tell me....,
well......,
exactly, certainly, absolutely,
4. use short sentences and phrases! we austrians often speak in long sentences, and full sentences, natives dont do that, they use short phrases or sentences.
we say (in german):
Yes sure, that sounds good!
how do you do?
native english:
Sure, sounds good!
how's it goin'?
5. think english! do not translate in your mind- stop learning words in your first language and then translate, it is useless, just learn the word and the meaning, all in english!!!
Thank you, that's very useful
Number 4 is so true! Natives cut down the sentences drastically. I like the examples you gave

Oh God, I'm in tears! This is the lesson I needed. The main takeaway for me was: "get stuck, make a mistake!" Thank you, Hadar! Hugs from Hungary! 🧡
Sending lots of hugs back!
Great
Yes, we human beings must know that: - We can only learn by making mistakes! -
Yeah, we will make a lot of mistakes untill we reach the goal.
Wow! Your steps are very similar to those of my method:
1. Discovery the language
2. Imitate the language
3. Assimilate the language
You learn things in context and discover how to say things (vocabulary, phrases, pronunciation, etc.)
You imitate all of these things.
You make these things automatic and this makes the language so much easier. This gives you confidence.
Your commentary it's the most accerpt here, all that things is truth everyone simply copy each other.
Living it.
@@corynicolas3175 ohh thanks I didn't know it, Can I question you what are those language that you can speak?
@@alonsinhorichard9756 English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and American Sign Language. I'm a Spanish-English interpreter.
@@corynicolas3175 what's your native language?

How to be fluent in English
You need to have these three things
1. knowledge
knowledge of words
knowledge of grammar
knowledge of pronounciation
knowing how to use certain expression
knowing how to structure it in a sentence
2. practice
making sentences quickly
3. Confidence
knowledge +practice
How to improve knowledge
-master the basic tensees
-focus on words that you uses on writing but never on speaking
-focus on what you need
How to practice
-talk to yourself
How to be confident
-it's okay to make mistake
I love this teacher since the first time I listened her.

Yes, that's normal. Would you like some training on how to get over the confidence issue?
@@jesse_sweed
Yep, me needs to this
I understand that because English is a 2nd language to me as well. Let's hear you speak my language!"
Now I am a fluent English speaker, though I still makes tiny mistakes often as many native speakers would do in reality(mostly its a long term habit thing, at least I know what my mistakes are when I make them). I can even argue with the natives with quick responses. LMAO!
Hope that helps.

Now, trying to become a good English speaker, I find myself repeating that story: my worst problem is still the confidence, because of the fear of making mistakes and sounding stupid.
hi
So true.
2. My game plan
-I’ll go back to the basics. I thought learning and expanding my vocabulary will help me become good with constructing sentences but I became more confused and I dont know where to put some words.
3. I will go back to the very beginning. I will start from there until I mastered it. There’s no room for procrastination now.❤

It appears to me that my biggest problem lies in lack of practice in writing and speaking. I have some understanding of my problematic areas and what to do, but when it comes to actually doing something about it, I'm not as consistent as I wanna be.
So, to get better at those areas, I :
- keep my diary every day.
- write a few comments on Reddit or UA-cam
- have 1-2 speaking sections with native speakers per week

Hello Haddar,
Thank you very much for your interesting video.

I've heard a story many years ago and at the time I thought it was really silly yet, it goes like this :
Martha started studying English because she thought that knowing English was cool and she wanted to look cool when among friends.
Does that mean that love is the way? Or what exactly makes Sarah speak better English than Martha?
@@FatManJackson Better incentives...... better incentives. Who's to gain more in case one ends up actually mastering the language? Yet..... hard to say. Sarah might be intellectually challenging or have trouble concentration .... that might get in the way of her learning the language. Martha might be a genius who masters easily anything she puts her mind into. Also Martha might be a highly competitive person who hates being number two..... here .... another great incentive.... being number one ... if that's Martha's thing.
Life is complex.

Recently, i´ve have been watching your videos here,i´m non native - speaker. Your channel is helping me too much, i´m grateful for that. I think when i´m going to talk in English, i start to feel nervous, I want to improve the language and your advices are helping me in my daily day.
Yeah! that's right. I viewed all of your videos and that's true we don't need to just sit and study English, we also should practice it and make our basics stronger.
100% recommended this video! ^^
I like the way she's talking to. Very honestly.
Making mistake is a good thing because it shows there is room for improvement. 💚💜❤️♥️💘💛🍁🏃🏋️💚💜❤️♥️💘💛🍁🏋️🏃🏃
Dear Hadar - You always give wise advice. I am pretty much fluent but always check your videos to improve my communication skills to speak for the voiceless, the animals who suffer “unspeakable” cruelty, no pun intended, in the hands of humans to be used as food and fashion, and to be experimented on. So I wanted to thank you for your help in 2018 and to wish you a very happy New Year! 🦋
You make me very proud, whoever you are and wherever you are. I will never hear of a better reason to learn another language than to be the voice of the innocent and to speak up for those who cannot defend themselves or speak their pain. You are a soul mate my friend and a very special person. Love to you...
