Religion is Evil | Bill Maher

- In this thought-provoking video, Bill Maher tackles the controversial topic of religious violence, challenging traditional notions of divinity in his signature no-holds-barred style. Drawing from both historical and biblical examples, Maher argues that many of the violent acts attributed to God in scripture can be seen through the lens of modern morality as acts of mass murder. With sharp wit and deep skepticism, Maher examines the ethical implications of divine violence, questioning whether humanity’s long-standing reverence for God is due for a reevaluation. This is a must-watch for anyone interested in the intersection of religion, morality, and the uncomfortable truths of history.

One of the few topics I like when Bill Maher speaks
Yup.
Keep up the good work Bill!
Money is NOT the root of all evil... RELIGION is.
Also, RELIGION is the root of all IGNORANCE.
Thank you Mr Maher for saying what needed to be said.
It is the LOVE of money which is warned about.
Yes but what is the motivation behind this preacher and the violence they have fostered since the ministry of Jesus?
Money.
Bc money = power.
Nobody explained this mechanism better than Shskespeare. Ever hear of the play *Timon of Athens?* No wonder (you haven't). The play denounces, drumroll:
$m.o.n.e.y$
And somehow, any time one gets the idea to stage it on any public scale, rules of censorship and the call for the slicing and dicing of the original text beyond recognition.
Timon, after a series of hard knocks that teach him the sad but "duh" truth: "money can't buy you love" (or friendships).
Here it is in all its genius:
Timon of Athens:
“Gold? Yellow, glittering, precious gold?
No, Gods, I am no idle votarist! ...
Thus much of this will make black white, foul fair,
Wrong right, base noble, old young, coward valiant.
... Why, this
Will lug your priests and servants from your sides,
Pluck stout men’s pillows from below their heads:
This yellow slave
Will knit and break religions, bless the accursed;
Make the hoar leprosy adored, place thieves
And give them title, knee and approbation
With senators on the bench: This is it
That makes the wappen’d widow wed again;
She, whom the spital-house and ulcerous sores
Would cast the gorge at, this embalms and spices
To the April day again. Come, damned earth,
Thou common whore of mankind, that put’st odds
Among the rout of nations.”
I disagree... religion contributes to ignorance but it's not the root of ignorance.
Also, capitalism is amoral, and uncontrolled capitalism makes society more and more unfair, like immense wealth inequalities and no access to healthcare nor education if you are poor.
@@markbell9973 Correct. Plus, it must be really fun being the guy who has an answer for everything.
Actually the LOVE of money is the root of evil.
So glad I got out of that cult.

Everyone is born free of religion. It depends on where you were born and what religion your parents choose to spoon feed you. Religion like alcohol should be illegal until one turns 18 years old and can then think intelligently on what religion to choose or choose no religion at all.
Most people are born into it. That's a big part of the problem. Being brainwashed from birth is very hard to overcome.
Make the age that people can be introduced to religion at least 25, when their brains are fully developed.. if that were the case religion, would disappear very quickly.
If people were not introduced to religious dogma until they were 25 years old, religion would disappear very quickly. The reason is that adults are much less likely to believe supernatural bullshit than children. Children think adults know everything and cannot be wrong.
Agreed but it depends whether they've learned what religion is by 18. People convert at all ages, for countless reasons. Where do they learn about critical thinking skills and cognitive biases? Not in school, not around the dinner table, certainly not in church. People are forced to seek out that knowledge on their own.

Nobody knows who wrote those tiny earliest fragments of the canonical Gospels as they were written anonymously. And nobody knows when they were written as the carbon dating window is a century. They could have been written in 7O CE or they could have been written in 17O CE. There simply is no way of knowing.💙
At least Marcion gave a good effort by tossing everything to do with the past
I was agnostic for many years...somehow willing to keep an open mind either way. That morphed into total atheism as years went by...probably as my critical thinking matured.
That’s not what agnostic and atheist mean. If you didn’t accept the claim that a god exists, then you are an atheist. If you don’t know that for sure, then you are an agnostic atheist. Most atheists are agnostic atheists. If you are saying that you know that no gods exist, then you are a Gnostic atheist, otherwise known as an anti theist.
I been preaching this new gospel for a year now. Leaving Christianity was the best decision ever.

The most liberating thing I ever did was to say out loud and at the top of my lungs, in front of my family was to say, "there is no god". We, as you probably have discovered, have been told what to think our entire lives. We are going to be burning in hell, is something we are told from birth. Escaping that lie, is terribly freeing. Acknowledge the lies and be free.
This video is chock full of lies. God is good, Satan and man are evil.
@@DDEENY Except when God in the OT gives the command to bash the heads of babies, to take in young women as sexual slaves, slavery in general, the flood which horribly wiped out little babies, young children, pregnant women, and special needs children and adults. But you say "Oh that was God in the OT, and the NT is the new convenant." Ah, but that isn't what your bible says...
Malachi 3:6: "I am the Lord, I change not."
Hebrews 13:8: "Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever"
Hebrews 7:24 says, But He [Jesus], because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
And on the sermon on the mount jesus states "For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle shall in any wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled." And so all that horrible stuff in the OT Jesus did, and is down with harming innocent people who were defenseless. Like the little babies. Like the pregnant women. Like the young and dear special needs children who couldn't do everyday things because of disability. That is the God that you believe in.

Can’t believe I was a Christian for 50 years until I read Greek,Sumerian and Egyptian mythology. The Bible stole so much from these mythological stories 🤔
I read all of those I'm not an atheist. For example let's take the flood account. If there was a worldwide flood you'd expect to see it written in multiple sources. Matter of fact if the only place that the flood was mentioned was the Bible you would see atheist saying see if there was an actual flood you'd see it multiple places. @@MichaelMeasho-s9s You mean god did. According to your religion god made literally everything, this includes the devil. That makes god morally neutral at best, and a chaotic narcissistic psychopath at worst. According to the rules of your religion god invented evil, which means it (god) had evil in it to begin with.
@@MichaelMeasho-s9s the devil repented, didn't you hear? Yeah, he is one of the good guys now. I think God is going to make him in charge of human health and sadness.
If this doesn't sound right, that is because there is no such thing as the devil, therefore he couldn't repent. If he were real, then he could have repented and this wouldn't sound wrong. Since the bible only provides the status quo 2000 years ago, no one could ever know if the devil has repented or if he is still evil. If he were a real being, then there would have been updates provided the same way the original story was provided. Yeah good point, recently I heard Neil Degrasse Tyson sum it up as people who have "faith" in God have to say it in that sort of way because there is no proof (obviously) ...if there actually was a "God" that is provable it wouldn't be called faith it would be called evidence.

The religious think that being an atheist/anti-theist is a kind of rebellion to religion when it’s just simply living your life freely, and not feeling the need to bend over in eternal praise and thanks from dawn til dusk. As a pre-teen I was in a school where every pupil was required to have a copy of the bible. While our scripture classes were lightweight, leaving kids to read said scripture at their leisure was disastrous for credulity! The Old Testament is just one long litany of the kind of malicious, and deceitful behavior that would earn a pupil serious punishment. The prolific murders, racist massacres and mass rapes were no different from those for which Nazis were hanged at Nuremberg. The Gospels were full of "just so" justifications, like why do the ancestors of Joseph matter, given he was supposedly not Jesus' father ? The Letters of Saint Paul were nothing more than the hijacking of the cult by a new self-appointed prophet, and the bureaucratic organization of tyranny. The Revelations of St John the Divine were just plain crack pot, like the ravings of a druggie. Above all this psychopathic "god" of Abraham was the ultimate abusive bully, who demanded fawning "love" under threat of endless torture.

The wise farmer always saved two of every domesticated livestock so that they could start over again once the two rivers receded.
The epic myth of Noah represented a symbolic hero farmer who saved his entire family and livestock from those devastating floods. The region between these two rivers became "the entire world" for the early Mesopotamian people, when the entire population was only one million globally.
Wholesome story you outlined but not the truth. The message in the story of Noah is the first thing Christianity teaches. Why? It serves as the bedrock of changing perceptions at a critical age of a child, when they are most curious and open to manipulation like teaching the sins. Christianity is hostile toward mankind. I was raised catholic. The story about Noah's Ark was what led directly to my disbelief. I was 12 when, thanks to science books aimed at children (I think they were called 'Childcraft'?), as well as the outward doubt by my protestant mother, I figured that out on my own. It seemed like well-meaning people around me on the catholic side CHOSE to believe metaphor as a truth to suit their narrative.
I'm no intellectual by a long shot. But having the freedom to hear the scientific and logical POV alongside the 'beliefs' I was raised with, sowed the seeds of doubt. Watching the less educated, more religious catholic, side of the extended family, against the protestant, more logical side of the extended family, I was keen to the contrast. There was so much shame and guilt that accompanied the catholic side - and going through puberty then adolescence, I felt nature itself leading me away from their ideology. They were kind, good people whom I am fortunate to have known. Those who remain, remain close to this day & still don't 'force' me to believe a single thing they believe. I always thought that perhaps they don't truly believe the tenets of their religion either, at least to some extent. That it's tradition, or therapy perhaps, that keeps them tethered to it. I was respectful & told them I believe to some extent, things went better that way. But then I heard Christopher Hitchens speak on some public BBC broadcast, and lost any 'ceasefire' status I might have held. I was armed with the usual old arguments - "what about the charity that religion inspires", and "what would happen to society if there are no eternal repercussions for anything we do". Secrets and scandals emerge, allegations of clergy abuse became fact, rampant and was discussed publicly for the first time. Someone from your town finds the strength to come forward. Then another. Then another, you know that one. And another - look how messed up they are, despite their parents being devout catholics, good people, etc.
Thank you to Mr Hitchens, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, and even Bill Maher to some extent. Watching Maher join the good company of Hitch in dismantling the overtly arrogant & ignorant Bill O'Reilly has been a true pleasure.

You have an alterior motive to deliver a soul to your god. Its how you prove your worthiness to him. You swindled someone out of their soul by putting fear into them. Like a knife to the throat. Believe or die! How gangster!
P.S. How does one find amazement in the birth of a soul, and believeable the lie of sin? You will be asked at the end of our life. Why did you believe in sin? Show the evidence without pointing your finger at yourself and anyone else. You will be standing pointing at our Creator. Believing in sin, you become your own god. You judge and condemn. You are not a god. Trust is our purpose in life. What did we believe from the evidence of a Creator? The unconditional love we were given without fear on our birth or the fear you we must learn to love?
The innocence in every living creature in birth is the presence of our creator.
How will you explain to our Creator what you believed in one word? Duped? Betrayed? Judas? There once lived a man who shared a warning and they made him a god, so that you never come to question their legitimacy.

Bill O'Reilly huh he can't even write his own history books he has to have somebody do it for him
You’re great and a man after my own heart😂😂😂😂👍
The apostle Paul in the New Testament makes it very clear that God is sovereign and has the right to decide who is predestined to heaven or to hell and that faith is a gift from god. Therefore, anyone who does not believe in Christ is damned before he was even born, predestined to judgment. This doctrine is known as "Calvinism" and there are many scriptures which refer to this, especially the N.T. .
Unsurprisingly, Christians never mention this and because most of them are ignorant of it. Instead, they promote what's known as "Arminianism" which says salvation is a free gift for anyone who chooses to accept it.
Those of us know the canon and judged it objectively know that its convoluted and awful.
These were some of the forbidden questions that got me banned from the family church at 6 years old almost 40 years ago. If a child can poke holes in the narrative then how can you not see it's complete BS
This comment is what Maher is talking about. This senseless blather is downright funny. I support you believing this stuff, Larry. Thank you for giving us a perfect example of the Christian cult. Gotta tell you, when I think of "canon", I think of Gettysburg.
@@roberthenry9319 lol. Biblical canon is a bunch of b.s. Gettysburg canon made things change
@@roberthenry9319 you completely misunderstood my comment if you think that I'm a Christian! I am not. But I do know what I'm talking about the bible because I aspired to become a pastor... It was the learning of it that set me free of it's delusions.
Christians are dependent on their religiosity. Humans don't need religion to thrive as a species.
There is no god😊
God is real fool
Truth. Thank you!
well, if you read the book. you come to see its stupid
they even got Pi wrong, and you can check that with string and a cup. that shows you how much work they did on it.
I tried reading Revelation. It reminded me of Father Dougall talking about the beast on the moor, scaring the sheep. It was clearly written by a lunatic.
Thank you Mr Maher
Christianity says to a poor child who comes from the wrong side of town, who has parents who are alcoholics, who has been physically and mentally abused, who is sad and afraid.....,
"You're an evil sinner who deserves to go to hell!"
To that child, Christianity says, "But, God has made a way out for you. But, in order for you to get out, you must confess your allegiance to Christ and commit to doing everything the pastor tells you that the Bible is saying for you to to...
Have no self confidence, for you are a worthless sinner who is incapable of doing anything good for yourself... Forgive and forget your parents for beating, neglecting, and raping you. Praise God for saving you and be happy you are not going to burn in hell so long as you continue to believe and follow what we interpret
the bible says is true for you"
Ugh.
See, the gospel can take hurting children and completely devastate their spirit of independence and survival.
The truth isn't kind, either.
Where does it say that? Seriously where exactly?
@dutube99 It says that to the entire world, and that includes poor kids and rich kids. The message of condemnation and damnation is given to everybody that takes the time to read it.
I think that that is particularly demoralizing for abused and neglected children. That's the point I'm asserting.
@larrysbrain1627 where specifically though? Chapter, verse?
@@dutube99 I know exactly where these scriptures are in gospels and letters of Paul. If you want to know, then I suggest you search for them yourself.
@larrysbrain1627 I don't think you do actually. For the third and hopefully last time, where exactly does it say all that?
Believing in an evil God permits you to do evil things.
They were not written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John because it’s not written in first person! It’s written in third person! Duh!
True..if it were written by an eyewitness it would read like "Jesus and i went into town"..not "jesus went into town"..never saw the word "i" in the gospel's
Bill has got it right on religion! I am working very hard to make sure our AI doesn't ever act religious!
Thank you for fighting against the CHICKEN SHIT
Go to heaven for the climate.. go to He!! for the company !
Jesus also said : if your eyes sin scoop them out and if your hands sin cut them off. Ah so much wisdom and love 🥴
so your god trump is a match for maher! the golden one is innocent and maher is guilty? sounds like a double standard.
My Sundays are for myself. My rest.
But we do not have to kneel down and pray to you. Do we?
@roberthenry9319 No, just a deep bow will do. 👌🏻
@roberthenry9319 A deep bow will do.
That exorcism on Palin failed.
All such old stuff, but if it makes people reconsider these stupid dangerous beliefs.
The flood destroyed the unintelligent design under the heavens, and no other creation happened after the flood, so contradictory.
Well, no flood. The only unintelligent people are those with faith.
That was pretty good! Signed, Singing Apologist.
His original screw up is buried in between Genesis 1 and 2. Notice that in Genesis 1, he creates day and night before the sun, calls the moon a light and appears to have forgotten to create fresh water. By Genesis 2, it still hasn't rained and he's realizing this, as well as someone to work the soil and needs to create rivers. It appears that most things didn't survive his first creation attempt because he creates man again, land creatures, trees, plants and birds again....pretty much everything that needed fresh water. Its no surprise that he also created faulty humans that he'd need to come up with some really weird salvation plan. I would venture to guess Adam and Eve simply needed instructions for irrigation systems and rain water collection from the tree of knowledge, but god was just being a dick about it.
