#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
Rules:
1: No discrimination or hate speech.
2: No affiliation links that do not belong to nerdSlayer.
3: No political/religious talk or debate .
4: Any points you make have to be substantiated either in explaining your opinion or when stating facts you need to back these up with reliable sources.
5: Do not argue moderation decisions in public, if you have an issue PM the mods.
6: We don't allow self promotion, giveaways or anything of similar nature from community members on this discord without nerdSlayer's permission.
7: Wherever possible if you initiate a discussion try to do so in an appropriate channel for it. For example game news could go in game-table a story on the latest EVE heist however would belong in mmo-booth or the latest GPU shortage can go in tech-wizards

why not just make a vandal heart like game, with story, characters, leveling up, cinematic, etc
You mentioned that players who own the game can play it offline after it shut down. That is incorrect, the game is currently unplayable by anyone currently as it required server access.
Project Leads - "Fans have been calling out for a collaboration between these two elements for decades now... proud to announce Warhammer Connect 4"
lol
To be fair, there's a good chance 2 people asked for it. That's fans.
"Connect 40k practically writes itself. long match though"
@@benorchard7173 2,000 years later…
I mean….id play it
Still did better than concord
And dustborne
@@elyrienvalkyr8167 something tells me he wont do dustborne.
Really goes to show just how unappealing concord was and how blind the executives behind it were
Honestly the more I think about this game the more I think 'Why not just make an actual Chess set?' Like I appreciate the idea of this game and actually giving a story mode for it but come on man.
You could do that, it would cost you easily 3 times as much as a regular chess set if you used the actual miniatures for it.
They’ve release one years ago
I think they have one.
You could make a chess with any skin and a cutscene when you finish off someone's piece 😂
Harry Potter vs WH 40k Chess 😂😂😂
"Who's asking for bloody chess anyway?" - As someone who was introduced to chess via battle chess in the 90s...ME!!
Chess with explosions and death does in fact spice things up I’m with ya
Yeah, same. Battle Chess was an awesome game, and I liked what they tried to do with Regicide.
I want a real regicide game a la gwent
@@Mkrause762 probably not what ya mean, but I’ve just been hit with a mental flashbang of all the random 40k card games made to turn a buck
@@Shadow-sword I mean a video game adaptation of a fictional fantasy board game
I wonder why there's no Planetside-ish Warhammer 40k MMO
There was an attempt of doing this, Eternal Crusade, which was already featured on this series: ua-cam.com/video/zhqXvPJd3-I/v-deo.html
TL;DR: it's pretty difficult to make a game like this.
@@CPU_Fronz Difficult and expensive and risky because it's ultimately niche. Still with Planetside 2 on its way out, maybe we'll see something rise up to take its place.
Lol, I was wondering the same thing. A game scenario with three factions fighting for resources, building bases and holding territory!
@daemoniaque6640 on its way out? People still play Planetside?? That game came out in 2012
This. I love real-time massive war games like Planetside. I don't know why not many people enjoy that kinda game. It's literally Battlefield but better.
I helped test this game when I was in a collage in Sydney, they're Aussies! Regardless of the rating, it was so cool as a bright eyed young adult to see such a big brand and one I loved having a game made by one of our small studios. Team was awesome and the animations and assassination were pretty cool.
Its always available on the seven seas.
If its not illegal to kill a game its not illegal if i pirate it
As a 40K game fan all 40K games at the time were shite, cheap shovelware when GW were skint and let any old joe make a Warhammer game..
Ah yes.. Regicide.. Played a number of matches waaay back in the day. But am not enough of a chess-fan to have been kept playing. The various animations were pretty cool though - in the vein of the much older Battlechess - or its adaptation in the first Harry Potter movie. That said, I still do occasionally listen to the game's soundtrack while driving.
Oh man, I know this in my library :( I think I played like 3 or 4 matches of it total.
I've never played the regicide mode, only regular chess. It's fine for that, basically a more visually interesting chess game like Battle Chess back in the day.
Inb4 other 40k fans say this game is not dead... this series is all about the downfall trends in games, not the fact that they're literally unplayable. Peace ✌
I remember buying this in the Google play store waaaay long ago and barely playing it lol
why it didnt succeed? It looks fucking boring
If you think this is bad, let me tell you about how Regicide is played in the 40k lore.
The game is extremely popular in the Imperium of mankind to the point where most space marines and even the primarchs were known to play in the books.
The in-universe board is 4D chess with new sub-boards that can pop out the sides of towering gameboards, there's tiles that let you rally your opponent's pieces to your side, and often games would take hours as the MCs dump massive narrative bombs while playing a game that ominously foreshadows the battle to come in a few chapters.
Future chess is crazy man.
PS. Lookup "40k Malcadore regicide" there's a few channels who have narrated a nearly full game from one of the Hous Heresy books.

Late case I see 👀
Oh shit, I was chatting about this game a couple days ago. I had gotten it on Kickstarter I think, alongside a perfectly designed T-shirt that I still wear. I liked the game, nothing outstanding but definitely not bad, and the main story I remember was good and it teased having a story expansion adding the Eldar. But yeah, I guess now I'll learn what happened with it and why the studio gradually disappeared (as the game did on Steam as well). On with the video!
man when i first saw this game i was so baffled
with only one question on my mind
who asked for this game?
I got really lucky on getting that just before the shutdown
Bruh i was just playing it yesterday HAHAHS
here i was listening to the other vids in the background while i grind, what a nice suprise
😁
If there’s any truth to the ‘people have been talking about connecting these’ comment it would be as a mod to already existing chess games, not as an entire game in itself.
But let’s be honest, they likely just pulled the comment from the warp instead.
Perfect for sleeping. Cheers man keep up the good work!
it’s 1:16am and nerdslayer vid dropped..
..guess i’m not heading to bed yet
Late night drop or early morning drop ?
I really dont mind but I do have to ask: what is up with calling Games Workshop "GS"?
lmfaoooooo
Night owls are here
Why
I bought it in early access hoping they'd add the other 40k factions. I even supported it online saying we should support the game and see it grow. Too bad they just released a few skins for orks and SMs and dipped. I was very disappointed and embarrassed for supporting it. I think i just wanted more decent warhammer games but it definitely taught me the lesson of not expecting anything from any developer and i havent been disappointed since
Oh, I have this! I think I backed it, and got a poster and a shirt, too. Turns out the 40k aspect didn't carry the game as much as a thought it would. I have a passing interest in chess, and I would get bored so quick in Regicide! Honestly, their added mode with HP and stuff just felt jarring and it didn't fit, and just playing normal chess with the 40k skin was better. Part the issue too, was that it felt pretty static. I can't speak much about the campaign, or if it got good, but from what I remember, it was just throwing 40k jargon at you.
Honestly as a chess and 40K fan, this was awesome to hear about…then I tried to get it on Steam and my phone and it had already been gone. This game flew under my radar and of course, when I finally heard about it, it was unavailable and I was it’s niche audience 😂
It was Chess... You can only do so much to make that work. And while I like chess, and liked their take on it, it was still kinda "boring" to play. They didn't capture the feeling or the passion imo
Edit: A 40k auto battler sounds pretty neat though. Something akin to what League of Legends has with TFT would be awesome
PS Vita is the next case?!? Aww man, that is going to be painful for me...I still have my Vita in a drawer in my bedroom, I haven't tried to use it in years but it still worked last time I checked lol
The fact that the next video is about a game console... Man, time had passed.
How could PSP, a convenient gaming console that can match PS2 in power, had a sequel that fumbled so hard?
Battlesector was good. Space Marine II was great because it got the budget and devs it deserved. Supposedly 40k Total War is already in development.
I’m sure a big budget FPS will be in the pipeline very soon considering how popular the IP is getting.
Would love to see you do a video on Talisman: Horus Heresy. It was absolutely killed on arrival by a single negative TotalBiscuit video (In quite possibly his worst ever review).
Why aren't there more hits with the IP?
Games Workshop was throwing around the license like candy for a while. And what came out were a lot, I mean A LOT of stinkers. With the occasional good one in the mix every once in a while.
Which is pretty much gaming in a nutshell anyway. Most games are of average quality at best. Bet every once in a while something like Ori and the Blind Forest, Hollow Knight, BG3, DMC 5(insert amazing game title here) come along showing us what a true quality game is.
This game has as much sway as a warhammer 40k pinball game. This could've been made into a minigame into any of the hundreds of WH40K games out there. Better yet, if you make a TRPG you can shoehorn something like this into it.
This was a classic pile of shame victim of mine. I bought it because i truly did want chess with a 40k skin. Going back to old battle chess titles.
And it languished in my library as orher stuff caught my attention instead.
Then once it was closed down all the Steam discussions said you couldnt actuslly plsy offline as it would get stuck on a mandatory login screen.
It would take a community mod to fix that supposedly. I still haven't tested it.
40K needs to stick to action games like Space Marine 1/2 and Boltgun. The hobby itself is turn based strategy and we had Dawn of War already. Flesh out the games to match the vast IP!
Mortal Kombat actually had a chess minigame in a few of their entries, but that's all it was. A minigame part of the greater whole. WH40K auto chess actually sounds like a good idea that hasn't been used as far as I'm aware.
From what I know, Warhammer gives a license to make videogames to anyone that asks. Most of them fail, but mostly because they don't see videogames as a way to make money and protect their IP but as a "free publicity" thing. Most 40k games only serve as a side note to fans, or introduction to the lore to non-fans.
I would play a WH 40k auto chess i dropped Tacticus exactly because it hits right in the middle of too shallow to be a turn based rpg and to slow to be focused on action
We’ve never really seen Regicide before in any official media. It makes me wonder just how the game is actually played. (We know it’s like chess).
You know, this thing got me into 40k alongside drop assault and space wolves.
This was my Dawn of War, and to this day I remember it fondly...
Watching the different executions and actions available in that game, I am trying to understand why they did not make it a turn-based tactical shooter instead of a chess game
I just downloaded the rules for the game, and 3d printed a few armies to make chess sets. This is actually way more fun as a board game/chess replacement than it ever was as a videogame
I'm a new warhammer fan so i feel like the lore and games are never ending. there really is just about every different genre of game imaginable under the warhammer name.
Also You sound a lil sick, if you are hope you feel better soon.
4:17 "In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood."
I’m not sure if you already did this game, but can you cover Battle Nations? It’s a game that I once played a lot of until it died and I would like to see your take on it.
I feel like every once in a while I see a Warhammer chess board and think "That's neat" and forget about it.
dont think anyone asked for a chess w40k but a tabletop online game now that would be fucking awesome
Many often wonder, why there arent more hits utilizing the ip. Oh, thats an easy question to answer: gw is stupid.
The irony of getting a Warhammer 40k Tactics ad during this video...
They could have just A: made a tabletop simulator type game. Or B an RTS with this graphics
Maybe one day we'll get a game where you can play real regicide one day.
Lmao, i bought this in 2015, played it for 5 hours and never thought about it again
For a half a second i thought this was the table top and I was SO confused lol.
I thought nobody knew about this game in the first place, glad you shed some light onto this
I still have this on my phone because tbh, as a mobile game, its pretty good.
I wonder if it would've been better as a Free to Play game, with the ability to purchase additional skins for your sides. I can imagine the price point of "basically chess" probably put a lot of people off.
That and the walking animations were sped up. Like, wow, that's very slow.
always love your videos my friend ngl ive played so many mmos because of you covering them
The "we where" meme made ma laugh much more then it should have.
This reminds me of Pokemon duel the gatcha chess Pokemon game
This shit was cool as hell so glad i got it before they killed it
game graphics good concept bad (make RTS or turn base good)
Guess nobody selected "REGICIDE"
There so many 40k titles that were quite shit 😅 lots of content then
This was basically Battle Chess with WH40K paint on it.
Skill Up said it best: Every Warhammer game is a mixed bag.
Ah yes a lil late night DoaG. Cheers, @nerdSlayerstudioss
Covering a system next. Unexpected.
The Codex Astartes did not approve of this game
6:05 I think you meant "it's NOT as easy at it sounds."
I still have this on mobile and it works
This gameplay puts me to sleep lol
could you do S4 league later please
always a good day when we get a doag post
Bro knew when to upload this
40k autochess yes please...
Vita means life....
the emperor os not dead
IT is regicide :D
Omg I just got into a vita fix this week, and now thats the next case! So cool. I really wanted one when i was younger but never got one. I just purchased a broken one and im working on fixing it up so i can experience it!
Hope you enjoy it!
I would love to see nerdSlayer make a video on Warhammer Dark Nexus or Eternal Crusade. Eternal Crusade definitely is an expected video at some point, just hope I don't have to wait another 2 years to see the next Warhammer death story
He already did Eternal crusade
You've been killing it with these recent vids, love your work!
thanks
Who is GS? You use that a couple of times, but I must have missed what it stands for?
Apparently brain worms for me LOL. GameS WorkShop. Kappa

It always baffled me that GW would greenlight games that came close to the tabletop...but never actually comissioned or greenlit any project that was just the tabletop on PC. This game had the rules with the regicide mode...but was still chess
Never lol. GW still has the 80s mindset of “all media is an advertisement for the core product.” They want all paths to lead to buying their little plastic people
@@ethanc1121 makes me worried for the amazon show...
It would have been a bit more interesting, if there would have been CSM or daemons, because then you could be a chaos god playing with his puppets and minions.
Well ... at least this one was better than your Concord video.
fee fees
I worked on this game, and man was it a wild ride
It would have been better as an autochess battler imo.
I can appreciate your mad about this ip but it's not a shadow on the wall compared to the ps2 fire warrior game
If I ever see that peace of shit again it's getting yeetes into the nearest body of water
AI artwork at 5:00, that's too bad..
I did played and reviewed this game in the past. The issue is that it lacked basic features of chess. Like ability to play with black pieces. Why are you buying chess game if you lack basic way to play chess? This alienated immediately part of player base which wanted a chess engine, but with nice animations and models. Regicide mode on the other hand was an awful game mode which played like a chess, but went against its direct principles. Thus it created an awful experience in which nobody was interested in. For example, a good play in chess like taking an important piece with your queen in a middle of a board would be an awful play in regicide mode, because then every other enemy piece could take pot shots at you and remove your queen without any threat to themselves. Ability to control the board became detrimental and the correct way to play was in limiting amount of control over the board you had and focusing fire on individual units. Worse, when your units would get low, you would want them to go behind your lines and they couldn't make a good moves which would be in chess.
The idea of autobattler is a great one. It would had fitted this game a lot better. Overall, failure of this game is down to developers having no clue in what they are doing. Everything was mediocre at best. Just look at how this game looks. Everything is like than in this game or worse. I also do question analysis of why games are failing when major gameplay issues aren't noticed. Then a person cannot really tell what is wrong with the game and it has to result in going in circles speaking about abstract meta analysis like environment and appearances of a subject matter rather than its essence.
Btw: And then there are some odd comments about poor AI of Regicide or boring solo experience. Like, chess engines are extremely good and chess players prefer to play alone. What is more, RNG in Regicide mode was awful and it could dramatically change expected interactions of that game mode.
Okay, but why the AI photo at 4:57? There's like a million WH40K art pieces on the internet
I refuse to play Darktide because it's inherently a squad-based shooter and offers no single-player component. I don't want to play with randos, and I don't have any friends who are interested enough to play. That goes for a lot of games.
u can play that game solo what do you mean
@@isopropyl1314 Only with a mod, and it stops all progression.
Cool, thanks for sharing, this video is about a different game however
Congratulations
