Good News and Bad News
Typically people want the bad news first.
The bad news is that we are all sinners. You are a sinner and I am a sinner. God’s creation was perfect.
Our original ancestors, Adam & Eve, had direct access to God. He visited them and they would hang out together.
God is perfect and He created a perfect people.
Sadly, sin entered this perfect creation through an act of rebellion. That one act of rebellion threw everything into chaos.
Immediately, they were cognizant of their sin. They worked to cover their nakedness and began to pass blame.
A curse entered the earth and now every person born would be born under that sinful curse.
Many people will argue that at least they are not Hitler or Stalin. Most of us are not serial killers! We’re in relatively decent shape, or so we think.
It’s not that simple, though.
As Steve Taylor wrote in his song Jesus Is For Losers, “They don’t grade here on a curve, we both know what we deserve.”
I am guilty of sin and you are guilty of sin. “What sin?” you ask. Lying, stealing, envy, lust, the list goes on and on. Each of which knocks us off of our “pedestal” of perfection.
If we boil this down to a court session we would be proven guilty. The prosecutor would present indisputable evidence of our misdeeds and transgressions.
Our good works don’t offset our sin.
Plus, there is no statute of limitations on our sin.
Justice demands recompense. The verdict would be swift and the judgment severe.
The Good News
God had a plan all along.
True justice could not ignore these iniquities and transgression. The penalty had to sufficiently cover every sin that was committed in the past and any sin that would be committed in the future.
Yes, all of them.
As soon as the original sin (thanks Adam & Eve) was committed God put His plan into motion.
Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, came to earth sinless and perfect.
He lived His life free of sin and transgression. He healed the sick, raised the dead, fed the hungry, and loved fearlessly.
He was the perfect sacrifice for our sin.
A lamb without spot or blemish was sentenced to die a brutal death on our behalf.
Jesus was tortured without mercy. He was mocked, spat upon, cursed, and deserted by His friends.
The beating, according to Isaiah, was so ghastly that He could not be recognized as a human (Isaiah 52:14). He died a horrific death, gasping for air, nailed to a cross.
His death was only one part of the redemption story. The best part was death could not keep Him. He defeated death and conquered hell.
It’s written, “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25).
The resurrection did not transpire until justification (justice), in the eyes of God, was achieved.
The punches, whipping, cursing, crown of thorns, nailing, and betrayal were for you and were for me.
What Jesus endured was more violent and appalling than anything Quentin Tarantino could envision.
The price for our sins has been paid. There is no double jeopardy in the Kingdom of God. Our sin is judged in Christ.
That, my friend, is Good News!
What’s our part to play in this Gospel plan? Not much, actually.
We acknowledge that we’re sinners and in need of a savior. We recognize that we’re incapable of saving ourselves and need a rescuer. We repent of our sin and ask God for forgiveness. Humby, we accept the atoning sacrifice and redemption that is found only in Jesus Christ.
I recommend that you look up Psalm 51 and read it. It’s about a man who committed adultery and then had the husband murdered to cover his sin. His heartfelt and sincere prayer just might be the inspiration you need to form your own prayer to God.
Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved!

Personally it wasn't the volume of the song as much as the unevenly matched the volume of you talking and the song was. I had to turn the volume up to hear you and the volume down for the song...not that I wouldn't like to blast the song. I've been a Johnny Cash fan since I was very little and though this one makes me cry when I hear it in combination with the video and having read both of his autobiographies, loved his tv show and seem most of his movies I know many of the scenes in this video and where they are. Like much of the video was filmed in the old House of Cash museum, which had been closed to the public for many years because the public had lost interest for awhile there in the 80's. So the place was run down and in poor condition. There was even a gold record that had fallen on the floor and was shattered. Anyway yeah it was like this song was written for John.

This song, especially coupled with the video, always brings tears to my eyes. It's such an emotional rollercoaster. I think it takes some age for the listener to be able to really appreciate the message. Johnny is reflecting back on his life, the empire he built, and comes to the realisation that it's all meaningless. The only things that truly matter in life are friends, family and love.

Love this song both versions of it. One of the coolest things is how Trent Raznor said this was Johnny’s song now. Johnny went out the only way Johnny could...his way. Not a huge country fan but love Mr. Cash. If this doesn’t hit you in the feels, you ain’t alive

Dear Reverend, I so appreciate the strength expressed in your tears of empathy and honestly to identify with sorrow, pain, and regret. And, I respectfully ask you to prayerfully reconsider the doctrine of infant depravity. Most, if not all of us suffer some struggle between what we espouse and what we do. A doctrine of inherent depravity may be some kind of explanation but there might be a better one involving epigenetics and toxic cultures. I actually really hope some theologian has handled this. A really nice lady told me Jesus loved me and was knocking on the door of my heart. That if I asked him in, he would come in and help me. I did, he did. That was about 74 years ago. In the 60s I told him I was going to stop calling myself a Cristian because I just couldn't believe the part about french frying people in hell because they didn't believe the exact right thing. Asked him to let me know if I was making a mistake. Spent about ten years making regrets. Could've been worse. Told him i needed help. Near as I can tell he didn't care what I called myself, he was better at forgiving me than I was. Made me want to try to be a kinder more helpful better person myself. Had a stroke a year ago May. Recoverd, stepped out the kitchen door to see a beautiful spring sunrise. Told him, "if I wake up dead some morning and turns out you were a rubber crutch I'm going to be pissed. I imagine we both laughed. Actually, I can't help believing that we both laughed. Thanks Rev for inspiration and space to speak. I do appreciate the other comments and am curious what anybody may think of mine.
I believe Johnny used this as his personal song of repentance, especially during the final crescendo as he lamented his deepest regrets. In this final scene I saw his "sweetest friend" as Jesus. Extremely powerful. God's grace truly is amazing.

I was also a single child to a single mom.. lost her two years ago to breast cancer. An irreplaceable piece of me is gone because admittedly, I'm a "moma's boy" and for better or worse, she wasn't strict enough with me ( as she had problems of her own, depression etc.. ) but with all the problems I had as a kid ( trouble maker in school, I stole money from her, got caught stealing a game from a store which she had to find out about while at work but she never gave up on me. In my later years I had overcome those issues but had them replaced with different, perhaps more intense issues ( anxiety, depression ) and it's been well over a decade where there isn't at least a moment in every day where I have thoughts about "ending it".
When I hear this song.. I can't imagine living a long life full of loss and regret like Johnny when at 35 I have a mountain of regrets and scars already.
As a human being, the most impactful thing I have ever heard and viewed, and I am not especially a Cash fan. It amazes how this video affects ppl in different ways mostly depending on ppls age, this is an emotional masterpiece.. Johnny Cash is the only artist to be inducted into the Rock, Country, and Gospel Halls of Fame. Sorry for your family issues, you seemed to have handled them well. Thanks for sharing.!

Yes this was my one of my mom's favorite songs and she lived it! I feel I am living it myself, trying to find a better path while respecting and building on the past. But I am struggling, -I love deeply but I really haven't done so good in much of my life. I've been hurt badly but also loved deeply and really hurt some people. God save us, God forgive us of our inequities, our sins, our unpayable depts, in Jesus' name!
I am not a religious person, but I enjoyed your reaction. This song is so well written that not only can the singer change it's meaning, but so can the listener. When Trent Reznor wrote this song he was writing about his addiction to drugs. Battling against it, and wondering if the drugs are all he really is. Could he have been someone else without that addiction? He says "If I were born again, a millions miles away. I would keep myself. I would find a way." So no matter his circumstances, even if he were not a music star, he would still have been a junkie.
That is who he is.
When Johnny Cash sings it I hear a different version. A man with regrets is reflecting on his life. He is at a point where nothing matters to him, but reflections of what he was has a comforting pain to it. The song paints regret for things he could have done better, but pride in who he is. "...I would keep myself...". And at the end, (Johnny recorded this just months before his death as a fare well to family and fans) what more can we hope for than to be who we are, but wish we could have done a little bit better too.

I’ve listened to this song many times. Much has happened throughout my life to reflect on and I suppose that’s why I love this song so much. I have seen suffering by many people. I was one of them and at times it lead me to question Gods purpose. After a long look in the mirror one day I realized I didn’t like who was looking back at me and it was then I realized Gods purpose isn’t the same for everyone. Many of us suffer through many means be it addiction or the kind of pain that hurts but it’s through the pain that we learn of Gods love. To many of us have lost sight of that. My hope is one day many more will look in the mirror as I did and ask what did I do to make my life and others lives better? Did I love God as much as he loved me?

This was the last thing Johnny did. His wife, his rock, passed away shortly after this was released and he followed shortly after her. That was June standing on the stairs looking down at him in the video.
What a life story they had.
The fact is that he had a 1st wife that he treated like shit while June looked the other way. Listen to Roseanne tell that story on Ken Burns miniseries "Country Music". I hope & pray that regret for that is a big part of what he's saying here.
From what I know, Johnny found that "Way", "Sola"; I'm not fearful for his eternal destiny. (It's just that... the pain of life's regrets still cut deep with him.)

This song is so powerful and raw.we all live with regret. I’m nearing the end of my life and you look at things differently.i served eight years in the Marines and Desert Storm combat veteran.lost some great friends there and did things I’m not proud of.came home and my wife said the man that came back was not the man she married and left.nothing made sense and everything seemed like a threat.felt guilty for making it back home when other’s didn’t.turned to alcohol to drown the pain.for the past thirty plus years I have lived alone,just my dog.
Ten years ago I found Christ and accepted him in my heart.stoped drinking and other destructive things.i have chronic pain in my back so it limits my getting around.this is what keeps me up at night.when I die and go before God for judgement and he ask why did you kill my children,we are all his children,what I’m I suppose to say;it was my job.
I love God and Jesus and he died for my sins but we will all be judged.

Your sins and transgressions were judged in Christ at Calvary. Yes, there are consequences for our sins here on earth. We don't escape those (see 2 Samuel 12). However, for those, like yourself, who have confessed, repented and submitted their lives to Christ judgment day will be different. It will be a time of relief, celebration, and thankfulness. Christ did what we could not do.

Interestingly the “crown of thorns” reference is actually a change made by Johnny Cash. The origin lyric was “crown of shit”. I think Johnny Cash’s version is dramatically better honestly.

Such a deep emotional song for me...So much I could say about this song..my life and grew up listening to Johnny before evolving to rock,prog. rock metal,growing up going to church..Going through the motions of trying to turn it all over to Christ in my 40's but still struggle every day with what life throws at me and bad choices I make still at 54..I so agree with you about music..something that has always deeply effected me and now try to help share/promote up and coming mainly younger bands that are very talented and have deep meaningful songs like the band Motion Device..I consider myself a Christian but have never fit in or conformed to any religious sect etc..Loved your reaction and on the spiritual end seem very approachable which is something I rarely feel with anyone..i'm subscribing

All of the momento mori images in the video - the feel of a 17th C still life with all of the death symbolism - really gets me too.
My take is Reznor’s take was the pain was something he needed to feel to feel anything whereas Cash’s take is when you’re looking back at the end, the pain was as valuable to you as the joy in the journey.

I am still right here" is about feelings of being stuck and depressed, as though you haven't lived up to the expectations of society, your family, or maybe yourself, etc. I feel this is true because it ties into the general theme about regret present in this song, and especially with the last few lyrics about starting again.

It’s a whole different song than NIH. And I can barely watch it. I cannot even watch it without crying. Four years ago we did a genealogy and I have a whole side of the family with the last Cash but never thought bu yes he is a relative or was. He was so talented and he had many gifts and people don’t know very much about him. He was an author, an ordained minister, was in the service, lost his closest brother to a horrible accident at the age of 12. He even helped dig his brothers grave which is heartbreaking he was addicted arrested and then found in june Carter. Thank God for her. i don’t think he wanted to live without her. I don’t think he could

I don't think this song is about regret, I think it is about acceptance. I think this is an extremely rare moment/gift where we can see a tortured soul accept his life for what it was as he prepares for for death. Regret is for those who still have life left to live.

Can't hold back the tears, it's the story of my life too (sans the "empire" part coz i've got none, but all "dirt" lol). The inclusion of the imageries of Jesus at the cross made it even more poignant, giving the song and the tragedies and absurdities of Johnny's (and most everyone's) life the needed context and redemptive conclusion.

My dad got in a bad accident just as i TURNED 18 & HE WAS MENTALLY DRUNK , i WAS YOUNG & STUPID , THE SPACE WE HAD BETWEEN US GOT EVEN FURTHER THE LONGER i STAYED GONE, ... when I got into my 40s I kept getting these thoughts of how can I fix this,then Id forget about it due to no solution,didnt have the words of know how ..... years go by , still dont know how to fix our loss of communication,when Id see him it was 2 quik words a litt;e smile & the rest Id be talking to my mom, because I knew I couldnt get on his level & accepted that we were too far apart to reconnect ...... years go by, the feeling of wanting or wioching I could fix things someohow came along more regularly & after not knowing how to fix it Id disregard the idea, Till later. .Thats what i did, put it off,till later. aS LONG AS HE KNEW i WAS ALIVE & OK & i KNEW HE WAS ALIVE & OK, i PUT IT OFF TILL LATER, . in 2018 My mom called me crying,never heard her cry . - My dad had passed away the night before . - T FIRST IT WAS SHOCK SURPRISE , BUT AS THE MONTHS GO ON, THE HEAVY REGRET & PURE STUPIDITY ON MY PART NEVER DISSAPEARS FOR LONG. - SORRY FOR THE CAPLS LOK , - wHAT THIS GUY SAID IN THE VIDEO- MAKE THE MOVE,TAKE THE INIATIVE, CLOSE THAT GAP & CLEAR THE AIR & FIX THINGS BECAUSE SOMETIMES WITHOUT WARNING, THE DOOR WILL CLOSE ON THAT PERSON & YOU WILL NEVER SEEN THEM AGAIN. I feel like the Holy Spirit sometimes moves of its own accord through music unintended and unbeknownst to performers (e.g. pink floyd) and this is another case - with that remarkable series of collaborations spanning time (Reznor, Rubin, Cash and all others involved).

Best reaction and best explanation. Looking at the video, when Jesus is shown and the nails are piercing his hands, Johnny says "I will make you hurt". I'm sure he is also referring to the fact that the way he lived his life when young was indeed hurting the people around and the Lord Jesus. This is like his repenting message -- his last message. He wished he could lived differently by finding "The Way, The Truth and The Life" earlier in his life.
There is another great short image where the trophies are put side by side with an icon of Jesus Christ, and Johnny saying "my empire of dirt" -- all his trophies = dirt, Jesus is the "treasure". Very powerful imagery.
The video together with the sound track is an art masterpiece that touches the heart and soul and makes me think every time to what's really valuable.

Hey there Rev! I just came across your channel and really dig it so far. Perhaps a unique perspective as both a music lover and an atheist. Definitely appreciate the way you approach reviews.
Regarding this episode: Trent, who is uber protective of his music, said “This song is no longer mine”. Wow! What hits me the hardest is time. NIN version is a young person who has time to change the course of their life, at least attempt to repair the damage. In the Cash version, the regret is final…there is no chance or hope to fix any of it. The toll age takes on a person’s voice cannot be faked. The fact Johnny Cash died about 7 months after this video was made is almost prophetic.

Every single time I hear this song, or watch the video, I lose it. Like a switch. first time, hundredth time. Its an apt metaphor for the tragic situation of mankind. Lonely, imperfect and bereft of hope without Christ.

He sang this shorty after his wife, June, who was the love of his life, died and he died shortly after this.
As a more progressive Christian, I truly can't handle this continued message of being born into sin. Innocent babies are born in God's image. God's image is pure. "Sin" or evil/imperfection comes from this world we are born into. I don't think God intended for us to believe "innocent" children to be considered the same as adults.
Jesus not only said that "unless (we) become like little children, (we) cannot enter the kingdom of heaven"... but, He also added, “If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea."
I know your theology is different, but I wanted to point out this is a major claim (born into sin), and it causes much undo suffering. However, Christians can take comfort in the Bible as Jesus had a different message to impart.
I think Trent Reznor wrote it for Johnny Cash. He just didn't know it in the first place. 😀 When I heard this song for the first time I couldn't stop crying. Made me repent from my sins. And listening to it for the 20th time (appoximately) it made me feel happy and excited. Why? Because I realized that he happily hops into that train at the climax of the song. He leaves all the worldy things and worries behind to start new. I think this can have two meanings: Firstly, he knows that he's going to die soon and he's going on his last ride to Jesus now. Secondly, for those who will be longer on this earth than he himself: There is a way to redemption. We can all hop into the (gospel) train and start a new life.
Oh, I wrote this comment before watching the video. This video is filled with so much symbolism. As you stopped it I realized that when Johnny is on the train in the beginning of the video he is the locomotive driver. I thought of us humans - me included - living our lives without God's guidance, thinking we know it all and we don't need him. Later he jumps into the train with only his guitar (for me it's our gifts we got from God). He goes wherever the train will lead him to and wherever the train will stop. I feel that God is telling me this right now by this song.

Touching reaction and touching words to this haunting song. Johnny did an exquisite cover of this powerful song. Trent Reznor singing it live is incredible, as is a live version with Trent and David Bowie performing it which is simply amazing. Could you please do a reaction to "Nutshell" by Alice in Chains (The MTV Unplugged version, as it's even better than the studio version.) In case you're not already familiar with it, it's a deep song reflecting Layne Staley's struggle with addiction (a battle he ended up losing) and feeling trapped by his life in the spotlight.

Johnny Cash was deeply religious, in his last interview before he died, he said that he was never angry at God, for his entire life, and never doubted that God was there.

Oh, how many of us have those 'knuckle-head moves' in our past, in our lives we so desperately wish we could take back, undo, go back in time to avoid. The bitter truth for those who have not found God is that we can't. We can't undo the hurt. We can only try NOT to do the same move twice.
Now... for those of us who HAVE found God, through His son, Jesus Christ? The bitterness fades into awe. We have redemption. Not only do we have a redemption, we have sinless, faultless, perfect redemption. It doesn't mean we'll never mess up again, no - but it means that we can be washed clean as snow by only turning to the only one who can. And God does not remember our sins when they've been carried to the cross - Psalm 103:9 He will not always accuse us, nor harbor His anger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins or repaid us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His loving devotion for those who fear Him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
I take heart in that every single day of my life. I hope I will remember to hold the spirit of thankfulness for my own redemption till my last breath.

Definitely love that picture of Christ on the cross paying the price. I definitely feel the image of the cross making a way for restoration. My biggest pet peeve with fellow "christians" is the idea of them "trying" to be better, but really having no actual process to get better. Like if God asked us to be really good a free-throws then sitting and reading about it isn't going to help. We need to get in the gym and shoot, a lot. But there is almost no concept of that in the church. Just mainly a bunch of people getting together to talk about how to be better without much actual concrete discipleship or path on how to manage building the emotional, mental, relational skills necessary to actually succeed. And then just chalking up their making mistakes to their sinful nature rather than their persistent, unrepentant laziness to actual do what's necessary to be better. I feel like if someone actually cared about God's hurt and not just enamored with themselves and having a get out of jail free card, then they would have an actual plan and path to decrease the pain they inflict on God and those around them. Then after decades of talking about love we'd have people actually capable of love vs what the church mainly is now
the sanctification paradox is legit. Does God do the clean up (Philippians 2:13) or do we (Philippians 2:12)? Both.
@@SolaMelodica I appreciate your thoughtful reply. I honestly think we're creating an unnecessary paradox though. The Bible compares it to planting, because God is faithful. It's who he is. Sanctification is a teamlift where God is always ready to lift. It's us who dont want to lift. But our willingness not to lift is what proves that we dont really love him. That's what the bible says. "If you love me, you'll keep my commands"; "Why do you call me Lord and not do what I say"; "Those who sin are slaves to sin, if the son sets you free then you will be free indeed". If we're staring at barren fields then we can make that a God issue, but it's not a God issue. We should look at how we're planting, how deep, how much water have we provided, are we returning nutrients to the soil, is there a plant virus killing the crop that we can mitigate, are there pests devouring the crop, etc. This is how agricultural yields grew over time, through people's increased knowledge of agriculture, despite the fact that we dont "cause" seeds to grow. We just give them exactly what they need to grow and they grow because God is faithful. This is how people go after things they actually care about with all their heart, soul, mind and strength. That's why literally everything people have put their mind to in this world has advanced: art, music, science, tech, sports, everything. Everything except most congregations' ability to love, listen, connect, and be responsive to God and others. Because almost everyone in the church besides a small minorty serve God worse than the people in the world serve their idols. Because church leaders dont take responsibility for their discipleship responsibilities since who knows maybe God's the one not pulling his weight. Like waiting for manna from heaven to feed one's family. But in all other successful human endevours where they count the costs, the outcome is prioritized, and the sacrifices are made the mantra is basically "Do or do not. There is no try."

They do not break it down into components, the ability to listen, the ability to communicate, the ability to connect with one's own heart and the heart of others, the ability to manage one's own mental, physical and emotional health. They do not practice one thing daily to master it. They generally as a rule avoid discomfort when trying to deal with these things as often as possible. Or they're trying to learn 10 instruments at the same time and therefore suck at all of them instead of spending focused time mastering one and moving forward. How can we get better? I'm horrible at it myself. Trying to put together the pieces because to me there's no excuse to why Steph Curry can be a master at 3's through sacrifice and I say I love Christ more than anything but I cant sacrifice 20 min a day to master something instead of constantly asking God to help me be a master at something I never have time to practice. Seems weird to me, and seems like status quo church behavior. It's why we can keep saying, as Jesus said of the standard religious leaders of his day, that we're going to go to the field, for sure we're going to go, but we never get there. Sorry for the long wall of text. A young man trying to make sense of this around his own life and his own church family.

Sir, I am only mentioning this because you talked about the topic of hate etc. I myself am a Transwoman, and I do no one any harm, and try to live the best life I can, but a LOT of hate is levelled at me, someone even saying that I am a sin against God, and will be going to hell. What Johnny sings about here is the very reason why I have chosen to sing Christian music. No, I haven't received riches, glory, awards, etc. I am not known beyond the region where I live. I did tour, semi-professionally, with a gospel group for several years. I have never considered myself as an entertainer. I carry the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is the one who gave me the talent, and it is He that I want to glorify. Oh, I can sing just about every George Strait song out there. But, I have no desire for that kind of fame. I would rather lay up treasures in heaven, than accumulate earthly treasures that will all go away in the end. This is Johnny coming to the realization that his life and the empire is all vanity. Just a pile of dirt.
