This song, originally is a Nine Inch Nail song covered by Cash its original meaning is about self harm, and heroin, no matter if it reflects Cash’s addiction issues, or suicidal thoughts, it’s one of Cash’s classics. Johnny decided to change just one line, possibly reflecting his Christian faith, Rest in Paradise Mr. Cash

This was Johnnys last music video he made. It was his goodbye to the world cause not long after this came out June passed away in May 03 and then he followed in Sept 03. The scene with her on the stairs wasn’t scripted. She came down to check on him and the director caught sight of her and made sure the camera man got it. This song was like it was written specifically for him. Fit him to a “T”. The songwriter, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, said after hearing Johnny’s version that the song was Johnny’s from then on. They released an album a few years after Johnny’s death with a song called “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” and they made a music video with a mix of stars and Johnny’s friends.

The House of Cash is (was) real. It was closed due to lack of business and was in decay. Johnny was staying there at the time the video was shot, and they used its physical disrepair as a way to show Johnny's mental and physical age and its limitation.
It burned down several years after Johnny's death, it was under renovation and various cleaning supplies and wood finishes/chemicals helped fuel the fire.

I feel that trent reznor (original song writer) and johnny cash shared the songs message. They both had sad lives as young men with the latter having drug problems that surely damaged relationships with his loved ones. To me this song says “i’ve made so many mistakes and hurt people i love in the process. I’m flawed and broken but if i could have a fresh start i’d keep who i am”. Such a beautiful song. One of my favorites.

The House of Cash was indeed a museum, but over the years it had fallen into disrepair and hence was closed to the public. The fellow who made the video realized it was the perfect setting for the video. I think the film clips he used were stored there. That framed gold record that had fallen to the floor is a great symbol of the "empire of dirt"--how many musicians would do whatever they could for a gold record? But there it sits on the floor. The repeated G on the piano is genius, too. At first it sounds like it might be a bell on that train, but it builds implacably. It's Atropos, the Unswerving One who cuts the threads of mortals' lives at the specified spot.

Johnny is a country legend and what he means is everybody around are gone are reference to Merle Haggard Waylon Jennings he's best friend's and other OG COUNTRY legends from the 60s n 70s and with Willie Nelson being only one left of there close circle and also he's wife June Carter there relationship was the sweetest story when he was a about 12 15 years old he heard her voice on the radio and fell in love with her and said to somebody I don't know how or when but I'm going to marry this woman, and it's a amazing bio pic on he's life called walk the line
I love Jonny cash he's so soothing
Also the sad part is some people think johnny cash pretty much died of heartbreak because he's wife June died May 15, 2003 and like 4 months later johnny died September 12, 2003

"If I could start again, a million miles a way
I would keep myself, I would find a way.."
The House OF Cash was a real museum.. Thats where the video editor found most of the other footage.. that is the house he grew up in, in the footage..
When the editor made this video and showed the producer and others what he had created, it upset them, due to its MAGNITUDE.. as you see..
Trent Reznor now realises what he created, is now part of Johnny Cash's legacy.
His wife passed shortly after and then Johnny passed.

This song takes on so much more depth after you know that it was a cover.
Because once you know that Trent wrote this at a dark time in his early 20s and Johnny covered this near the end of his life.
It becomes a song that connects both singers by the shared emotions of regret and emotional pain.
It really demonstrates an aspect of humanity because everybody can relate to regret and emotional pain.
Trent stated that after he saw this cover video he knew that the song he wrote was no longer his and he gained a greater appreciation of music and how it can connect people.

Johnny died within I think months of this video. Even the actual writer of this song from nine inch nails said it belonged to him now. Johnny took it and it became the reflections of a person at the end if his life having to face all the things he's done to others and himself, the many losses and the deep guilt he still felt. It resonates because we all know it doesn't matter how much money and fame you have, we all have to face our pasts when death finally comes. This was quite simply Johnny Cash's goodbye. Rest in peace .

Johnny Cash has been dead for about 20 years. The House of Cash was a real museum featuring Cash's music memorabilia and a gift shop and it was located about five miles from his home in Hendersonville Tennessee some 30 minutes outside of Nashville. Cash was kicked off of the Grand Ole Opry and his concerts weren't selling out and his record sales were down and his record company dropped him (even though his records had MADE that particular company) and he was sort of viewed as a "has been" and at that time The House of Cash shut down because no one was coming to visit it. In recent years he has reached a whole new generation of fans and his music is enjoying a resurgence and a new Johnny Cash Museum and Gift Shop has opened in downtown Nashville just a couple of blocks from the old Ryman Auditorium where the Grand Ole Opry used to be broadcast from before they moved to their new location on the outskirts of the city.
I think easily the most traumatizing thing in Johnny's life and the thing that left the biggest scar was the death of his brother back when they were very young, I think Jack (his brother) was about 14. Johnny was going fishing and he wanted Jack to go with him but Jack felt like he needed to work at the sawmill that day instead because the family was very poor (yes that old white house was where he grew up) and he knew the family needed the money. Johnny went fishing and Jack went to work and that day Jack fell into a saw giving him a devastating wound to his stomach. He lived a few days but he finally succumbed to his injuries.
Johnny was crushed by his brother's death but then to add to his "hurt" his father told him that "the wrong son" was killed because Jack had plans to be a minister, which his father thought was a far better calling than "piddling around making music" like Johnny planned to do. Also, Jack had already exhibited that he was more responsible than Johnny as evidenced by his willingness to go to work that day while Johnny went fishing! Johnny never got over his brother's death or his father's statement that the wrong son died. Even when Johnny achieved megastar status and millions of fans loved him and he lifted his parents out of poverty, his father still never fully approved of him.
The truth is that while there are elements of this song that seem custom made for Cash, for instance the reference to drug use because he fought drug addiction several different times during his life, but he had NOT been left alone. His wife, who one could argue was pretty much his whole world, was still alive and they had a son John Carter Cash who worked on musical arrangements for his father's songs and he and his family were certainly still very much in Johnny's life. Also, Johnny's daughters by his first marriage and June's daughters by HER first marriage were also still very much in his life. He had a bunch of grandchildren who were in and out of the house on a regular basis. He also had a younger sister and a younger brother who were very much a part of his life and who practically idolized him. That is not to mention the millions of fans who still loved him despite the fact that he was not as commercially appealing as the record company would have liked. The fact that you believe he is a lonely old man sitting in his mansion all alone, perhaps counting his money or polishing his awards because that's all he had left because everyone had walked away from him, is simply a testament to what an excellent song stylist he was. He made you think he was actually going through all that. He was not! What he was, was one of the best musical storytellers of all time.
I have been a Johnny Cash fan since his first hit record, "Cry, Cry, Cry" which was released in the mid-50's. During Johnny's heyday, his music was so popular that it is said that of every five records that were purchased in this country, ONE of them was a record by Johnny Cash! I have watched this video many times but I still can't make it all the way through without crying. I don't mean to pull an Annie Wilkes here but I am a HUGE fan of Johnny Cash and growing up I felt like he was almost one of my brothers and when he died a couple of decades ago, I cried for days! It is my opinion that there will never be anyone who can fill his shoes.

All the money and all the stuff is just that, stuff. You can’t take it with you and it don’t mean anything and it doesn’t help you when you’re alone and you would trade your last dollar for someone who actually cared and would be there for you. You cut away from the video too quickly. Even though the music had stopped, the camera pans down as he closes the piano and runs his hands across the cover. There is a sense of finality to it. Amazing how he took a song written by a younger man about his current problems and turned it into his song reflecting back on his own life. The songwriter (Trent Reznor) wasn't impressed the first time he listened to the audio of Johnny's version, but then saw the video and it brought him to tears. Pain. He sang this song with so much pain in his heart. It goes back to the scriptures, What is it worth to gain the whole world, but lose your only soul. Only Johnny knows the people he hurt along the way, his triumphs his failures. He remembers his drug problem, and how he tried to make it all go away through addiction. When an old man knows his time is short, no matter how successful he is, he tends to reflect on his life, and focuses on his disappointments. He wants to make them right. He wants to get right with God. Wealth means nothing at this point in your life. He showed Christ's sacrifice for our sins, so I believe Johnny was repenting. He was expressing his need to repent for all of it, and his only hope was in Christ. Only Christ can make all your wrongs...right.

The house of Cash flooded and remained closed to the public ever since the flood. and that was great imagery for the lyrics of cash basically flushing his career when he pours the wine over the feast singing “my empire of dirt” I think the message of the song is that his music was his offering and sacrifice as a human to be worth his place. But he’s a liar (“in my liars chair” ) because he lost himself in that effort. Drug abuse, previous traumas, perhaps a focus and emphasis on the wrong things dvd wrong choices. At the end he sings “I would keep myself” and maybe if he did believe he kept himself then his musical offering would have been worthy and pure and more then an empire of dirt because art is truth. Though he’s before my time I understand Johnny was a man very passionate about repentance and redemption. I think at least in this song he is focused more on his fallen state then on the promised salvation ahead. The song seems such a longing for another chance and regret. I think he also acknowledges his own part in the sufferings of his life. The house he filmed the video in was the home he grew up in which burned down 30 years before the video was made. Both fire and flood in the houses of Cash. Symbolically that’s pretty intense. The video was filmed I believe in Feb 2003 and his wife June passed away that May. Johnny then passed away that September.

June Carter Cash died shortly after this song was released and Johnny died a few months later all in 2003. This was the last song he recorded. In a way saying goodbye.

I know the song is about regret because of addiction, but I also kind of getting the resemblance of having regret bceause of not doing anything just like the line " You are someone else, I am still right here", and " If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I will find away". Whenever I feel being left behind I always listen to this song. Johnny cash or Nine Inch Nails versions.

Please don't pause the song, during a song like this.. in order to intellectualize it. You're supposed to *feel* it. You can't feel it when you're constantly stopping it. You're wondering about the wrong stuff, because you won't feel it. xo

Johnny did have a museum but it closed down I can't remember why his wife died before he recorded this song and video and it's a popular misconception the lady on the stairs is actually his daughter the woman it shows in the picture on the wall was his wife Johnny died shortly after this song was released he was 71
    Johnny lived has a legend
He died a legend and always will be a legend part of music died the day Johnny left this earth to be reunited with his wife
RIP To A True Legend we still miss you 💔

Rosanne Cash a singer like her dad has black hair, check out her info.. he has a couple of other daughters, but dont know anything about them. June passed away a few months after this song and then he died shortly after that. Check the dates of their deaths out. Have a great day

Even though Johnny Cash is elderly in this, and near the end of his life, I wonder if this song (or Trent Reznor's original) could be cathartic and therapeutic for anyone who is inclined toward self-harm or self-destructive behavior. "I hurt myself today to see if I still feel. I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real....", has to be a familiar thought to many, many people, including teenagers who feel compelled to hurt themselves physically.

So three months AFTER he recorded this.

Trent Reznor's original version seemed like he was just trying to be edgy . He was given credit for writing the song , but who knows? It appears as if who ever did actually write the song , wrote it for Mr. Johnny Cash. His ability to story tell even came through on basic cryptic multi meaning poetic prose. We know exactly what Johnny meant with his video and the baritone delivery of the lyrics even. He was a true gem of a person except for what he did to his self with the drugs. The picture on the wall is of his mother and his wife passed away not too long after she appeared in the video. He too passed away before the video really even took off. February 2003 was filming date . May 15 2003 was when June Cash passed away. September 12, 2003 was when Johnny passed away. That alone gives it a ghostly significance. When you add how good the song is and the video and how well Johnny did on it, it's a hit baby! Congratulations you won the crybaby challenge. Not too many people can make it through that song without crying.

I teared up again 😂😅 man i love johnny he was my idol for the longest. I was in a deep addiction of pills and many other substances . I never really knew Jesus Christ until i hit rock bottom, while in rock bottom and recovering and fighting off temptation i kept replaying walk the line it may not be the most accurate representation of his life but it was the only movie i had. Seeing this video again keeps reminding me that we all have hope to be redeemed by the grace of god. I dont wanna be all preachy but i really feel like cash in the last days of his life he gave his life to Christ. Even with all the sin in his life he truly tried to be a better person and always looked for god. Ill see you at the pearly gates Cash ❤
