  • Well I decided to go in my boat drift netting for the flood. There were some anglers on the beach near the usual place I like to shoot the nets. We shoot the nets close, as they set off quickly on the flood, and will drift out and hit the buoy 3/4 mile off, so I motored a half mile further to the south, to keep out of their way, and away from the snags on the bottom. We shot one fleet close, and the other fleet straight away after the first fleet. We hauled the inside fleet 20 mins before the tide had finished, as they had gone around with the tide. We the shot them at slack water again to get the first of the ebb. We then had to run the outside fleet as there was a fair few fish in them. We then ran back to the other fleet and hauled them. Once back on the car park, we cleaned the nets for just over 21 stone of herring and a few whiting. I was happy with that, there usually isnt too many fish this time of year, and that was enough to hopefully keep the market price ok. Thanks for watching, if you could please press the subscibe button, I would be most grateful, thank you, James

Aloha from Hawai'i. Subscribed just now. I grew up fish gillnets with my dad since the age of 6 back in 1966. My first net my dad actually made by hand using monofilament from the fishing supply, and a net needle, and sewing uo a net 7 feet deep by 100 feet long. It took him over a year. Afterwards he got wiser, and purchased netting in bulk 7 feet by 250 feet, and he would attch the float line, and lead line himself. He purchased the floats from Japan too. We had a lead mold, and it was my job to cast the net weights. I'd spend hours a days making hundreds of lead weights. He had a government job, but when he retired he went into making and sell his nets to local fishermen. When I fished I usually tied 4 sections of net together so 1000', and set it straight out from the beach, and usually at night. We would sleep on the beach, and check the nets every couple hours by swimming the length of the net pulling out fish and putting them into a net bag. This kept the fish fresh, and prevented the sharks and eels from tearing up the net. The State of Hawai'i pretty much banned gillnet fishing in around the year 2000, so I gave my nets away to a friend in Alaska. It was fun while it lasted. Keep up the good work.

Great memories for you spending time with your father. Making a net by hand is a big commitment! Many years ago here, women used to make the cotton herring nets by hand in their homes. They got very quick and used to sell them for their living

Thanks for raising awareness about the damage being done to our inland waterways. Given you a sub. Great to see some fish are still in our seas of the Norfolk coast.

Very interesting, I enjoyed watching your video. Is there a quota for herring? my worry is that they'd be overfilled if this amount was taken regularly.

Yes herring is a quota species. This amount of herring is peanuts. My quota for herring was set at 200 tonne a month for the last few months of 2022. I believe it’s around 50 tonnes a month at the moment, so you haven’t got to worry about us over fishing. We are just tiny boats catching very little in the grand scheme of things. The general public have been brain washed and told a lot of miss truths about quota by the media.

@@tonycamplin8607 Thats fine, unless you are in the fishing game you wont know the details. There is so much mixed, biast information in the media, its hard to know the truth.

It changes day to day, can be anything from £25 -£120 for 20 stone on average.

We generally put them on the fish market, but do sell a few locally
